Rebel devil at the helm By Lachlan Ellis A female footballer, one of Darley’s own, will captain the Rebels in the NAB League in 2022, after co-captaining the side last year. Lilli Condon is 18-years-old, and won the Rebels Best and Fairest and got some VFLW experience under her belt in 2021, playing three games in the red, white, and blue. While those are more than worthy credentials for the Rebels captaincy, the hardy midfielder said she was surprised and honoured to be appointed captain for 2022. “I feel pretty privileged…everyone voted, and I felt pretty excited that the coaches and players had voted me in and thought I would be suited to this, and be capable of being captain,” Ms Condon told the Moorabool News. “At the same time, in the leadership group there’s so much experience. Anyone could’ve been captain, so it’s exciting that we can lean on each other and do it together, I guess.” Condon’s first game as captain was Saturday 22 January, against the Gippsland Power. Speaking to the Moorabool News before the big day, she said she was both excited and nervous to lead the Rebels on the footy field for the first time. “I’m pretty excited, I’ve got some nerves in me too…after training on Wednesday night, there was a lot of exciting things that came out of that. We did different plays and drills, everyone was a bit closer I think, coming back after summer break…it made it a bit more real that the season’s starting,” she said. “I’m not going to lie, I’m a pretty loud leader…but also, at training, people were asking me questions about the footy, and I love giving footy knowledge, it helps me to learn too. I think being genuine is important, talking to the girls, being able to get along with them, and being able to answer questions and ask them too.” Condon was unlucky not to be selected in the 2021 AFLW Draft, but when asked if she’d nominate again this year, she said she’d take things week-by-week. “At the moment I’m still kind of working it out…I want to play out the season and see where it goes, I guess I’m just going with the flow. It’s kind of a random moment in my life with a lot of decisions to make…so I’m just hoping the season goes well, and we’ll see where it goes from there.” Entering her fourth season at the Rebels, Ms Condon thanked Rebels staff and fellow players for their support, as well as family and friends who have backed her throughout her career.
