Our Ambassador
A champion of multiculturalism and inclusiveness has been named as Moorabool’s Australia Day Ambassador, and will visit the Australia Day celebrations at the Bacchus Marsh Public Hall on Wednesday 26 January. Dr Bullent (Hass) Dellal AO is the former Chair of SBS Television and Radio, and currently serves as the Executive Director of the Australian Multicultural Foundation, which has promoted “a strong commitment to Australia as one people drawn from many cultures” since 1989. Mayor Cr Tom Sullivan said it would be fantastic to have Dr Dellal AO as part of Moorabool’s Australia Dr Bullent (Hass) Dellal AO. Day celebrations, which will also include a citizenship ceremony and the declaration of Moorabool’s Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year.
Reminder – zero tolerance on fires
The Fire Danger Period doesn’t end for another four months in Moorabool, and Parwan CFA have put out a call to be aware of the restrictions. There will be a zero-tolerance approach from the CFA for those who burn off without a permit, with rulebreakers potentially facing fines of over $17,000 and/or 12 months imprisonment. In addition, there are conditions for the use of barbeques and campfires, including but not limited to: the wind speed must be below 10 km/h, the fire must be lit in a properly constructed
fireplace or a trench at least 30 centimetres deep, and a person must be in attendance at all times while the fire is alight. There are also conditions for commercial catering fires, solid fuel barbeques (such as rotisseries), wildlife scare guns, driving vehicles through dry vegetation, using chainsaws, welding, incinerators, and using farm/road machinery. “This year we are proud to welcome Dr Dellal AO to be part of the community on this special occasion, which recognises us as Australians and our part in a wonderful community and nation,” Cr Sullivan said. Dr Dellal has over 30 years’ experience in multicultural affairs, including chairing the centre for Multicultural Youth and the Islamic Museum of Australia, and cochairing the Victoria Police Multifaith Council. In 2006 he was conferred with an Honorary Doctorate in Social Sciences by RMIT University, and in 2020 he was appointed Adjunct Professor of the Alfred Deakin Institute at Deakin University's Faculty of Arts and Education. The Australia Day Ambassador Program sends more than 300 accomplished volunteers across metropolitan, regional, and rural Australia every year, from sportspeople, scientists, businesspeople, arts workers, and former Australian of the Year Awards recipients. The grassroots initiative builds on the strength of local communities’ Australia Day activities, and encourages greater involvement from residents.
