The call is out for all live music performers and attendees to fill out a survey from Music Victoria, and help the live music industry get back on its feet. Music Victoria is an independent, not-for-profit organisation that advocates for the Victorian music community, to develop and promote our state’s music industry. As part of the Victorian Live Music Census and Infrastructure Audit 2021, Music Victoria wants to hear from music industry practitioners, performs and attendees. The anonymous surveys aim to identify what was great about the live music scene in 2019, and what was ‘lost’ during the pandemic in 2020 and 2021. The survey data will help Music Victoria put real figures on live music’s value for local tourism, jobs, and economic development, and identify challenges and areas that need more funding. The last Live Music Census in 2017 identified Melbourne as the “live music capital of the word”, with 18 million fans generating over $1.7 billion in revenue and generations thousands of jobs. The 2017 contributed to the $22 million Music Works program, and the ‘Agent of Change’ planning provisions to protect live music venues from residential encroachment. Your participation in these surveys can help revitalise the Victorian live music scene after a tough couple of years.

Off-road collisions on the rise Victoria Police are warning locals and visitors to the Moorabool region to take extra care on motorcycles when travelling off-road, with new data revealing a significant spike in collisions. There have been 180 off-road motorcycle collisions recorded in Victoria’s western region so far in 2021 – 21 more than the same period in 2020. This comes as the region recorded a significant spike in 2020, with 210 collisions recorded – an increase of 64 per cent from the previous year (128 collisions in 2019). Police believe the increase in off-road collisions over the past two years could be a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, with travel restrictions and border closures the driving force behind many Victorians considering alternative travel destinations and recreational activities. Superintendent Sue Thomas, Operations Support Division – Western Region, said the increase in off-road motorcycle collisions across Western Victoria is extremely concerning. “While many riders take the necessary safety precautions there are others that are simply putting their lives at risk,” she said. “For those new to off-road motorcycling, and even those who are a bit out of practice – take it easy, drink plenty of water, take regular breaks, and most importantly, be prepared.” With mobile phone coverage often limited in remote areas, riders should always tell someone where they will be riding and should consider riding with a buddy or in a group. Motorcycle registration data indicates that recreational motorcycle registrations have grown 5.8 per cent since March 2020, now representing 20 per cent of all motorcycle registrations. With the end of lockdown and easing of restrictions in metropolitan Melbourne, police are anticipating motorcyclists will again be rushing to head out bush and hit off-road tracks.

Three quarters of all off-road motorcycle collisions occur at locations classified as public/recreational land, including national and state parks and public reserves. High risk areas identified in Moorabool’s west include the Wombat State Forest, and the Lerderderg State Park. “Police are concerned about a lack of experience contributing to collisions, with off-road riding skills likely to be diminished due to the ongoing lockdowns,” Superintendent Thomas said. Riders are being reminded to conduct safety checks on their motorcycles prior to travelling off-road and ensure they are in good working order, as well as wearing appropriate safety gear to protect against serious and fatal injuries. Riders are also encouraged to plan ahead and check the conditions prior to riding, including park closures. Visit Parks Victoria for the latest information and updates on changed conditions and closures.

Young people benefit from increased support The capacity of Victoria’s Youth Prevention and Recovery Care (YPARC) network is set to double. As one of five new YPARC units to be built across the state, the investment will support more than 900 extra young Victorians each year to get the tailored support they need in a crisis – more than doubling capacity of the state’s current YPARC network. Premier Daniel Andrews said they are not wasting a moment delivering the Royal Commission’s key recommendations. “We’re giving young Victorians across the state support and care when they need it the most,” he said. Grampians Health will run the new YPARC facility in Ballarat. An investment of $141 million in the mental health of young Victorians in the Victorian Budget 2021/22 will see new 10-

bed residential facilities built in Ballarat as well as Geelong, Shepparton, Heidelberg and Traralgon – and the existing YPARCS in Bendigo, Dandenong and Frankston completely refurbished and modernised. The sites reduce pressure on hospital beds by providing early intervention care and an alternative to hospital admission with recovery-focused treatment. The facilities will be designed by NTC Architects to create a welcoming and home-like environment with private bedrooms and ensuite bathrooms. Communal kitchens, dining and living areas, breakout spaces and an outdoor garden will also encourage rest and recovery – as well as support family visits for people during their recovery. All projects are scheduled to begin construction next year and, be completed by late 2023.
