Purple bin to collect glass By Lachlan Ellis Looking more like a scene from the Wiggles, there is another coloured bin being added to the growing yellow, red and green bin collection that already adorn residential homes, this one will be for glass recycling…and it’s purple. There are 13 councils who have them already, with Moorabool Shire Council on the waiting list for the new purple glass recycling bin, which all Victorian councils will adopt by 2027. Under the new four-bin system, glass will no longer belong in the yellow (recycling) bin, instead going into the new purple bin. Food scraps will also be allowed in green (waste) bins by 2030, and a new waste authority, Recycling Victoria, will be established to regulate the state’s waste and recycling sector from 1 July 2022. When mixed with other recyclable materials in a yellow recycling bin, glass can shatter and contaminate valuable and easily recycled materials, such as paper and cardboard. Moorabool Council CEO, Derek Madden, said Moorabool was in the process of planning for the new recycling system. “Council is currently undertaking a cost modelling exercise to determine the most costfriendly and logistically efficient service delivery method for the four stream waste services (glass, food organics & garden organics, recycling, and landfill). New services may be kerbside collections or drop off communal services – this is yet to be determined,” Mr Madden told the Moorabool News. “The timing of the new service’s roll out will depend on the outcomes of the cost modelling, availability of processing facilities, etc. We have nominated 2027 for roll out of the glass bin as per our kerbside transition plan but, may be sooner depending on these outcomes,” he said. In June this year, $127 million was made available by the State Government for councils to buy new bins, improve drop-off facilities, and put infrastructure in place to facilitate the reform. The funding is also dedicated to improving drop off facilities for the collection of food organics, garden organics, and glass. Victorian Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change, Lily D’Ambrosio, said the new system would greatly improve recycling efforts. “By collecting glass separately, we can make sure more of it is effectively recycled – with jars and bottles transformed multiple times into multiple products,” Ms D’Ambrosio said. Council’s ‘2030 Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy’ is also in the works, with a draft to be available for public comment “later this year or early next year”. The new state-wide measures are expected to divert 650,000 tonnes of organic waste away from landfill, and boost Victoria’s economy by up to $6.7 billion by 2030, creating almost 4,000 new jobs.
