Celebrating Fish and Chips National Chip Week 2012 - 20th-26th February 2012

FISH & CHIP FACTS

As a nation we just love our chips and 10% of the entire British potato crop is needed to supply all the fish and chip shops across the country Fish and Chip sales boom in a recession From March to November 2008, there were more than 548 million visits to fish and chip shops – up 5 per cent from 523 million in 2007 Fried fish began in working-class London at the beginning of Queen Victoria’s Reign, selling the leftovers from Billingsgate fish market. Fried ‘chipped’ potatoes appeared in Lancashire around the 1860s the two were served together somewhere around 1870. In 1845 vinegar was first recommended to be splashed over fish and chips by victorian cook, Eliza Acton, as a means of sweetening the fish. Joseph Malin opened the first fish & chip shop in Cleveland Street, London in the 1860’s.

In 1906 in Lancashire, Theodore Clegg opened a 70 seaterfish and chip restaurant and divided his customers into three classes - first, second and third according to their personal appearance and social status. In 1940 fish and chips was the only ‘restau rant’ food not to be rationed during the Second World War. More than 283 million portions of fish and chips are sold in the UK each year. Yorkshire people scoff more than 69 million portions a year. Fish and chips has 334 less calories than an average portion of chicken Tikka Masala, deep pan cheese and tomato pizza or doner kebab. Did you know that the fish and chip shop market is worth £1.2bn? This means that every £1 of every £100 spent on food is spent in a fish and chip shop One out of every four British potatoes are made into chips – that’s approximately 1.5 million tonnes/year

y r o t is H ip h C & h Fis 1860 –There is still a lot of debate about whether the first fish and chip shop opened in London or the North. Was the first chip shop Joseph Malin’s in London’s East End, or was it Mr Lee’s chippie on Oldham market, Lancashire?

1863 – Mr Lee, expanded and opened a chip shop in Oldham town, the second chip shop to be opened in Britain – according to Joseph Malin that is! 1920 – The mechanical potato peeler was invented, which was a great boon for chippies, as traditional chips are made from peeled potatoes. But remember you can cook chips with their skins on – they taste great and it saves time too 1920 onwards – Fish and chips shops were called ‘Fried Fish Shops’ and as can be seen at the Black Country Museum, where a replica , chippie from Willenhall can be seen the from ed vert con n they were ofte front room of a house

1930’s –The balance of protein, carbohydrate and vitamins found in fish and chips kept the Territorial Army well fed as they prepared for battle in special training camps

1940 – Fish and Chips were one of the few foods that were not rationed during World War 11 1960’s - Today’s most popular potato variety, the Maris Piper was first commercially grown 1960 – Housewives celebrated as the first frozen chips went on sale. From freezer to plate in just minutes, this tasty invention really made their lives easier
