AIRPORT MOVES A STEP CLOSER TO RE-OPENING
The progress towards reopening the former Doncaster Sheffield Airport has taken a significant step forward, as a key milestone has been reached regarding airspace approval. Last year, Doncaster Council approved a 125-year lease for the site following negotiations with landowner the Peel Group.
Reopening the airport, which ceased operations in 2022, is projected to generate over 5,000 direct jobs and 6,500 indirect jobs, potentially boosting the local economy by £6.6 billion once
fully operational. To facilitate this process, the council has established a wholly owned subsidiary, Fly Doncaster, and has partnered with Munich Airport International as a strategic collaborator to support phased reestablishment of services over multiple years.
Additionally, Secretary of State for Transport Heidi Alexander has opted not to call in the decision regarding the airport’s airspace, removing a potential hurdle in the reopening process. The final decision on the airspace will now rest with the Civil Aviation
Authority (CAA).
Mayor of Doncaster, Ros Jones, said: “This decision unlocks our ability to progress work with the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to establish the most appropriate airspace for airlines and passengers, as we work to reopen our airport in Spring 2026.
“We are working with the Department for Transport (DfT) and CAA to re-establish our airspace, this process will mirror other activities which need to be completed before the airport is once again ready to open.
“This is another step forward towards
reopening our airport.”
South Yorkshire mayor Oliver Coppard said: “Today the secretary of state for transport has taken the decision not to call-in the CAA’s decision to restore Doncaster Sheffield Airport’s airspace. That decision paves the way for the CAA to make a decision more quickly than if the secretary of state were to further delay that decision. We now expect the CAA to quickly lay out their approach. “Whatever that decision - either to restore or reshape our airspace - in conversations with the CAA and the Department for

Transport over recent weeks, we have been assured repeatedly that decisions about the airspace will not delay our plans for DSA. So this is another step forward.
“Later this year we will take a final decision about the funding for the airport and the wider Gateway East project. The work to fully understand the commercial, financial and wider infrastructure needs of the whole project is moving forward at pace and I have no reason to believe we will not take a positive decision this summer.”

ELECTRONIC MUSIC PIONEER HOWARD JONES ANNOUNCES SHEFFIELD SHOW
UK electronic music pioneer and charttopping singer/ songwriter, Howard Jones, this week announced that the UK leg of his European tour will see him hitting Sheffield City Hall on saturday 15th November. Tickets for the tour are on general sale now at sheffieldcityhall.co.uk
The timing couldn’t be better for Jones’ series of concert dates. It’s been 40 years since the release of his groundbreaking 1985 album ‘Dream Into Action’, which peaked at No2 in the UK charts
and cracked the US Top10. The album went on to spawn global hit singles ‘Things Can Only Get Better’ (which experienced a resurgence after featuring on an episode of Netflix’s ‘Stranger Things’), and ‘No One Is To Blame’, as well as ‘Life In One Day’ and ‘Like To Get To Know You Well’
1985 was also the year Jones performed at Live Aid, Wembley Stadium, alongside legendary artists David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Phil Collins and Queen. In the February of that same year, Jones performed
live keytar in hand at the Grammy Awards from LA’s Shrine Auditorium with Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock and Thomas Dolby, as part of the ‘Synthesizer Showdown’, performing a medley of their hits.
The self-affirmation of ‘Dream Into Action’ might be the perfect advice to get us through the current global chaos.
“That album was written while I was on the road,” remembers Jones, “I had a studio set-up in every dressing room where we were playing shows. The excitement of being on the road was infused into
those songs.”
Now Jones is back performing live and generating that same energy and enthusiasm at every show, sold-out crowds singing along to anthems like ‘Things Can Only Get Better’, and Jones’ debut single ‘New Song’. “I feel really pleased that the songs will resonate today,” admits Howard, “I’ve always said it’s up to us to make things happen. There are times when we can no longer be bystanders.”
Howard Jones has been a constant presence on the international touring

His first two albums
HUMAN’S LIB and DREAM INTO ACTION were worldwide hits. HUMAN’S LIB reached No1 in 1984 in the UK and featured the hits “New Song,” and “What

Howard Jones has sold upwards of 10 million albums worldwide and continues to make new music and tour the world. His ubiquitous hits can be heard in such high profile television series and films such as ‘Stranger Things’, ‘Breaking Bad’, ‘Watchmen’, ‘The Carrie Diaries’ and ‘Superstore’.

mental health week - join in and make a difference
This Mental Health Awareness Week (12-18 May 2025), Mental Health Foundation is calling on people, groups, and organisations across the UK to celebrate the communities that support good mental health and wellbeing. Mental Health Awareness Week takes place from 12 – 18 May and this year the campaign is highlighting the vital role that positive communities play in supporting mental health and wellbeing. Alexa Knight, Director at Mental Health Foundation, said: “Community is an essential protective factor for our mental health. It gives us a sense of belonging and purpose, and it provides support when we need it most. This Mental Health Awareness Week, we want to celebrate the diverse and vibrant communities that contribute to our wellbeing and encourage people and organisations to get involved and share their own positive experiences of community. Share your stories, photographs and videos on social media #ThisIsMyCommunity #MentalHealthAwareness Week and don’t forget to tag Mental Health Foundation.” Community supports good mental health, not only by tackling social isolation, but also by giving us a sense of belonging, safety, purpose and support. People who are more socially connected to family, friends, or their community are happier, physically healthier, and live longer. They typically have lower stress levels and fewer mental health problems than people who are less well connected. We can find community in different places and can belong to more than one. It is based on a common experience that binds you together which may be the neighbourhood you live in, your workplace or school, your faith, a hobby group, a sports team, a campaigning organisation, volunteering, living with a long-term health condition, being a parent, or even a love of Taylor Swift. A healthy community is one where you feel that you will be supported, and you will support others. It
will make you feel good about yourself. The benefits of community are not only limited to what we receive but also what we give to our communities. Evidence shows that being kind serves as an antidote to isolation and also helps us feel that we belong. It helps reduce stress, brings a fresh perspective, deepens friendships, and can even improve feelings of confidence and optimism.
Run by Mental Health Foundation, Mental Health Awareness Week is an annual campaign to encourage people to find out more about how to nurture and protect good mental health and what actions they can take. This year that will includes guidance about how to engage with your community to boost mental health and wellbeing.
Tips to engage with community to boost mental health and wellbeing. Make it fun.
One of the best ways to connect with others is by doing activities you enjoy. Join a club or group that focuses on your interests, like sports, music, reading or gaming. You’ll likely meet people who enjoy the same things as you. Get outdoors.
Spending time outdoors can help you move more, which can improve your physical and mental health. You can also get the added benefits that come with being close to nature. And, it opens up chances for casual social interactions. Go for walks, join a running or cycling group, or spend time in a community garden to feel more connected. Find like-minded people.
Look for groups that match your interests, beliefs, faith or values, as it’s easier to start conversations with people who have similar views. But don’t be afraid to meet people who are different, too. Connecting with a variety of people can help you learn and grow!
Show kindness to others. Simple acts of kindness can help you feel that you belong. Chatting with your neighbours, greeting people at your local cafй, or starting a conversation at the bus stop can lead to new friendships.
Small acts of kindness, like helping someone with their shopping or
smiling at people you pass, can also make you feel more connected and spread positivity.
Show your appreciation.
We often think kind things about others but don’t always say them.
Letting people know you appreciate them can strengthen friendships and help you make new ones.
Become part of an online community.
In-person socialising may be difficult for some people, such as those with mobility issues, social anxiety, or limited time because of a busy work and home life. In these situations, online communities can be a great alternative. But before searching for online communities, it’s important to know that not all online communities are good for your mental health.
A healthy community should make you feel safe, valued and connected, not drained and anxious. Be mindful of spaces that promote hate, unrealistic beauty standards, or harmful behaviours.
Volunteer or give to charity.
Helping others can build a sense of community and give you purpose.
Volunteering at food banks, local charity shops or animal rescue centres can lower your stress and make you feel happier.
Care for your local community.
Taking care of your environment can make you feel more connected.
Joining in on litter pick-ups, community gardening or organising local events are great ways to meet people and feel part of where you live.
Welcome new members to your community.
New people often want to make connections, so try introducing yourself to newcomers. You could:
• say “Hello” to a new neighbour
• introduce yourself to a new work colleague
• invite someone new to a community event
• offer local recommendations to someone who’s just moved to the area. Find peer support groups if you’re struggling.
If you’re going through a difficult time, connecting with others who’ve had similar experiences can be really helpful.

Peer support groups can provide comfort and reassurance and remind you that you’re not alone. During the Week, the Mental Health Foundation will be encouraging people to share their own experiences of communities and the positive impact they’ve had on their mental health and wellbeing.
Wear It Green Day
On Thursday 15 May during Mental Health Awareness Week (12-18 May) let’s turn the world green for good mental health!
Organise a fun event and don your favourite green clothes. By going green, you can support us in carrying out vital research and delivering programmes for communities who are at higher risk of poor mental health. Mental Health Foundation has all the resources you’ll need to run your event, whether you’re holding a quiz at work, baking some treats for your family, or holding a scavenger hunt at your school.
Organise a Wear It Green Day in your school, workplace or community and help to raise vital funds and awareness for mental health. Find out more and download your Wear It Green Day pack at www.mentalhealth.
org.uk/wear-it-greenday The Mental Health Foundation has been running Mental Health Awareness Week for more than 20 years. The campaign helps to normalise conversations about mental health as it’s important that people, particularly those at risk of poor mental health, know what they can do and where to get help.
The campaign is about more than awareness; it’s about giving people the expert information they need and encouraging positive action to support good mental health. This is especially important given that mental health is the greatest health concern among adults living in the UK - ahead of both cancer and obesity according to Ipsos research published in September 2024 (Ipsos, 2024).

A CRITICAL appeal has been issued to blood and platelet donors across England to help fill over 50,000 available appointments at town and city centre donor centres as the NHS warns of a looming shortfall in blood stocks, with four Bank Holidays in just six weeks threatening to impact supplies.
Over 5,000 of the appointments still to be filled are at the three Yorkshire donor centres in Leeds, Sheffield and Bradford.
As millions enjoy the two Bank Holidays and half term holiday which fall together in May, NHS Blood and Transplant is urging the public to book and fill appointments over the next six weeks. Blood donations often drop over bank holiday weekends, and with Easter falling late this year, four bank holidays in just six weeks have placed increased pressure on blood stocks.
Currently England remains in Amber alert for low stocks of O negative and O positive blood, so it is critical that enough donors step forward now to keep blood in good supply to hospitals throughout May and into the summer months. Donors are being asked to make an appointment to donate if they don’t already have one. People who want to start donating are also encouraged to take that first step and make their first donation. People are urged to book into one of the 28 town and
city centre donor centres where there is good appointment availability – including the three Yorkshire Donor Centres – with a particular need to fill daytime appointments. Currently, over the next six weeks, Leeds has around 2,400 available appointments, with 1,500 available in Sheffield and 1,100 available in Bradford.
People with O negative, O positive, A positive and RO blood types are particularly needed over the coming weeks. There remains an ongoing need for more donors of Black heritage to help patients with sickle cell who need ethnically matched blood.
Hospitals across England need over 5,000 blood donations every day to ensure they have the blood they need to treat patients for wide variety of reasons –from traumatic injuries or accidents, cancer treatments, sickle cell and childbirth. However, blood has a shelf life of 35 days, and platelets only seven days, so it is vital stocks are constantly replenished. Across the country there are still thousands of appointments available to fill. Donating a unit of blood takes just an hour and each donation can save up to three lives. Book a blood donation appointment today at www.blood.co.uk or call 0300 123 23 23 to find your nearest session.
supertram hits milestone
South Yorkshire’s Mayor, Oliver Coppard, has hailed a key milestone as Supertram has hit 10 million passenger journeys since coming back under public control. This achievement comes not long after Supertram celebrated its first anniversary under public control on 22 March 2025. March also saw the start of a dogs on trams trial after an overwhelming response to a public consultation where over 10,000 people had their say. Over 1,800 four-legged friends have travelled on Supertram since the start of the pilot with the outcome informing whether or not to permanently permit all dogs onboard. Since Supertram came back under public control last year, investment has significantly increased to £15.3 million to improve the network, passenger numbers are up, revenue is up, tram reliability was at 97% for 2024/2025 and within the first 100-days a deepcleaning programme was implemented to clean all trams and stops to restore pride in the network and give customers a better experience. A new Tram Train station at Magna is
also set to open in Winter 2025 and will serve visitors to the Magna Science Adventure Centre and people living and working in Templeborough, Rotherham. South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority is also looking to buy a new tram fleet by 2032 subject to government funding.
This is just the first part of a £100 million capital improvement programme to the network which will help improve the reliability of the system and ensure the network is fit for the future. Oliver Coppard, said: “Just over a year ago we took back control of our tram network; a network that hadn’t had much love or investment over its nearly thirty years of life, a network that didn’t work for all too many people. To have now hit 10 million passenger journeys on Supertram since bringing it back under our control is a huge achievement. I’m proud of the dedicated Supertram team who work hard day in and day out and put people and passengers at the heart of what they do. “

Rotherham Council celebrates its foster families – and is on the lookout for more
Rotherham Council is celebrating Rotherham’s Foster Carers this May during Foster Care Fortnight.
Foster Care Fortnight is the annual celebration of Foster Carers nationwide set up by The Fostering Network. This year it is taking place from the 12 to 25 May.

Throughout the fortnight, foster carers have been invited to a series of events to say thank you for their vital support for local children and young people. Interested residents will be able to meet the fostering team and ask any questions on the following dates:
• Wednesday 14 May at Rotherham District General Hospital from 11.30am1pm
• Wednesday 21 May at Wentworth Woodhouse from 11.30 - 1.30pm
Fostering Rotherham has also launched a brand-new video which highlights the positive impact Fostering can have on children and
young people as well as their foster carers, with a view to encouraging more potential foster carers to come forward.
The new campaign video can be viewed by visiting the Fostering Rotherham YouTube channel and Facebook page.
On the video, one foster carer described fostering as, “Foster children haven’t had that nurture and warmth. Why not invite them into your home if you are able to give that?”
On the support she has received from Fostering Rotherham she said, “When you’re in a training session and it’s face-to-face, you kind of all become almost a family. The support that you get from each other is so important, and that’s where you get your strength from. The little steps of progress that your children make while you’ve got them with you - that sense of achievement and pride - it’s unreal.”
Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young
Peoples Services, Cllr Victoria Cusworth, said:
“Foster Care Fortnight is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate our wonderful foster carers who continue to provide a safe, nurturing home for some of Rotherham’s most vulnerable children. Throughout the fortnight, colleagues from Children and Young People’s Services have planned a variety of events, and I hope our carers and their foster children will feel how truly appreciated they are.
“For residents who are thinking of a career as a foster carer, I would encourage you to follow the celebrations on our social media channels and take the first steps into a role which is fulfilling for so many.”
Could you make a difference to a local child’s life? Become a foster carer with Fostering Rotherham.

BLADES BOOK WEMBLEY PLACE WITH EMPHATIC PLAY OFF WIN
The Blades are one game away from a return to the Premier League.
United comprehensively sealed a Wembley spot at the end of May with a second three-goal success over the Robins in five days, courtesy of goals from Kieffer Moore, Gustavo Hamer and Callum O’Hare.
United made two changes for the second leg of the Championship play-off semi-final, with Cannon and Brooks replacing Brewster and Campbell, with both dropping to the bench, where they were joined by the return Rak-Sakyi. It was a lively opening few minutes with both teams having a sights of goal. Twine dragged
an effort wide of the goal after his initial run forward was only partially stopped, whilst at the other end, Cannon fired over after good work by Moore, prior to Knight seeing his shot gathered comfortably by Cooper.
The Blades threatened seriously though on 34 minutes as Hamer robbed Tanner before putting a ball across the face of goal that narrowly evaded the runs of Brooks and Cannon, but on 41 minutes, United took a further stride towards a final berth as MOORE rose highest to meet a Burrows corner with Wells unable to keep the ball out on the line.
City had the first shot
on goal in the second period, but Twine’s free kick was easy enough for Cooper to tip over, before United cliched the tie on 52 minutes with a well worked set-piece of their own, Burrows corner was stepped over by Brooks to allow the advancing HAMER the chance to strike at goal and with the aid of a deflection off McCrorie and the post it nestled into the net.
Before a triple change, that saw Brewster, O’Hare and Campbell introduced, the departing Cannon almost capitilised on a slip by Pring, only to see his shot deflected over, before S2 rose to its feet to acknowledge the contribution of Hamer,
who was replaced by Rak-Sakyi. With the crowd in full voice and the clock ticking down in the hosts favour, Peck almost got in on the action following another fine display.
To their credit, City refused to throw the towel in and from distance Tanner’s effort needed saving and Cooper duly obliged. With seven minutes remaining, just like he did at Ashton Gate, substitute O’HARE made a goalscoring, sweeping home the third after a lovely dummy from Burrows, to allow Campbell’s low cross to find United’s number 10 and the goal duly sealed a Wembley appearance later this month.

Grant McCann has been named manager of the month for April in Sky Bet League Two. Seeing off competition from Darren Moore, Ian Holloway and Karl Robinson, McCann took the prize having guided Rovers through a taxing month to secure promotion and set the stage for claiming the league title.
McCann said: “This is an award I share with my staff and the players. April was a very demanding month, including a period when we played four matches in ten days, and the pressure of an incredibly competitive race for automatic promotion only made it more tough.
“But everyone in the camp rose to the challenge superbly, with tremendous resilience, determination and quality to make sure we achieved our goal of winning the league.
“I’m proud of everyone involved at the club.”
Rovers won four and drew three in seven
Owls Season Ticket holders for the 2024/25 campaign who have not yet renewed for 2025/26 have 11 days to guarantee their current spot at Hillsborough.
Rotherham United can confirm that the club has now submitted its Retained List to the EFL following the conclusion of the 2024/25 campaign. Millers boss Matt Hamshaw concluded meetings with players earlier this week and following detailed conversations with the Board and Director of Football Recruitment, Rob Scott, decisions have now been reached regarding the futures of a number of players within the squad.
12 players were set to reach the end of their
games through the month, which served up clashes with promotion rivals Walsall, AFC Wimbledon, Salford City, Colchester United and Bradford City, including a run of four games in ten days.
Victory over Bradford saw Rovers promoted back to League One and move within a win of securing the title.
The panel making the final decision on the winner of the award was made up of former manager Danny Wilson, Sky Sports EFL expert Don Goodman and Sky Bet EFL trader Ivor Davies.
Wilson said:“Grant kept his players calm and focused for the run of April fixtures and it worked. Outside the play-off places at the end of March, Doncaster delivered an unbeaten month with 15 points from 7 games which ultimately catapulted them to the top of League Two.”
