spendinG review sees support for south yorks

Last week saw Chancellor Rachel Reeves announce details of the government’s spending review in Parliament. The review included several investments covering South Yorkshire including commitment to the re-opening of Doncaster-Sheffield Airport and £1.5billion of investment for local transport.

Responding to the Spending Review, South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard said:

“Today we saw the government lay out their spending plans for the next three years. I’ve been working closely

with the government for nearly a year to get to this point, to tackle the challenges we face and take advantages of the opportunities in front of South Yorkshire. There’s some good news, but still work to do.

“On transport, I negotiated a £1.5 billion investment in our public transport network which means new buses and new trams, connecting our communities. I was pleased to see the Chancellor reconfirm her support for our plans to reopen DoncasterSheffield Airport. With the government’s backing, we’ll take a final decision in summer.

“The Chancellor

also reaffirmed the government’s support for defence, committing £426m for Forgemasters in Sheffield, protecting 700 skilled jobs and creating 900 construction jobs, offering a vote of confidence in South Yorkshire as a leading defence cluster in the UK.

“We saw a massive £39bn for housing nationally which will mean more homes being built here, particularly more social homes. There’s £30m for an Innovation Accelerator which will help us grow the industries of the future right here. Announcements on health, education and

training will also make a big difference to communities across Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield.

“I was pleased to see the Chancellor confirm our Integrated Settlement, giving us more local control over spending decisions and public services from April 2026.

“Less positively, we didn’t hear anything about new money for South Yorkshire Police, which is disappointing, so I will keep on pressing the government for the funding we need to keep our communities safe.

“But we’ve not seen the whole picture today. Next week, we’ll hear about the

government’s plans for infrastructure, and I’ll be looking for a response to the proposals we put forward through the White Rose Agreement’s Yorkshire’s Plan for Rail, and support for some of our key industrial strengths, including our steel and hydrogen sectors.

“Overall, this is good news for South Yorkshire and for the North. We’re finally beginning to see the type of investment we’ve been denied for too long; a rebalancing of our economy and long-term commitments to addressing the challenges that hold our economy back.”

one of city’s oldest charities battles £200,000 shortfall

A Sheffield charity has issued an urgent appeal for donations as it faces a £200,000 deficit.

Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind or SRSB says the financial gap has been created by changes to national insurance contributions.

Now it has launched fundraising efforts to cover losses for it’s community advice service.

Founded in 1860, SRSB is one of the city’s oldest charities and currently provides support to over 7,500 clients locally alongside it’s Rotherham Sight & Sound division.

Fundraising Manager Steve Loane said , “We’re a local independent charity that relies on donations and pledges to fund our work. But recent financial pressures and increased demand on our service means that we are facing a shortfall this year.

“This appeal is to help bridge this gap and provide much needed funding for our community advice work, which is at the core of everything we do.”

SRSB’s ten community advice officers visit new clients and provide emotional support and advise over equipment, technology support, benefits payments, and other life changes.

Community Services Manager Sarah Keegan added, “Community Advice Officers support people at a critical point in their sight loss journey. Imagine being told that you have sight loss and have to stop driving, may have to leave your job, depending on what

work you do, or make changes to enable you to continue working or find new work. All the worry around how you will adapt, how you will travel and get around, your finances, as well as how your independence and relationships may be affected. We help people through this difficult time, make sure support is in place, and refer them to other relevant services appropriately, enabling our clients to regain confidence and independence.”

Dave, who had a stroke during the Covid pandemic and is now registered blind, is a regular visitor to coffee mornings and sports events such as curling and vision impaired snooker. He said “If I’d have known what SRSB did for people I would have been here 30 years ago to support it as a volunteer!”

If you are reading this and would like to help, you can visit SRSB/RSS’s Just Giving Appeal page here: www.justgiving. com/campaign/ srsbrsscaoappeal2025-26 or get in touch with Steve Loane at 0114 272 2757 or email fundraising@ srsb.org.uk

better transport week

People are being encouraged to swap their car journeys for public transport and active travel as part of Better Transport Week.

Better Transport Week is an annual celebration of how better transport can help connect communities and bring people together. Packed with fun events, powerful actions, competitions and special offers, it’s a chance to celebrate how sustainable transport can connect us to the people we love and the things that matter.

Transport that is safe, accessible, affordable, reliable, integrated and green does amazing things. It connects communities and brings people together; creates a thriving economy and revitalises local areas; and it’s good for our health and wellbeing.

Public transport and active travel are also one of the best ways to reduce your carbon footprint and help tackle climate change and air pollution.

During Better Transport Week why not swap just one car journey for a bus ride or train trip? If everyone switched one car journey a month to bus, there would be a billion fewer car journeys and a saving of two million tonnes of carbon dioxide per year, and switching just one car journey to the train saves the same carbon as boiling a kettle up to 455 times.

So why not try a new walking route, connect with friends, or visit somewhere new by public transport this week? You could get colleagues involved by organising a Better Transport Week workplace challenge, get friends and family together for a walk, or jump on your bike and see where it takes you.

Good public transport networks, shared travel, walking/wheeling and cycling help connect us to the people we love, the things we need and the places that matter.

Get involved with Better Transport Week on social media using #bettertransportweek or visit bettertransportweek. org.uk for more information and to find events happening near you.

adult care strategy

An update on the Council’s ‘Living the life you want to live’ Adult Care Strategy, including its performance and delivery in keeping people well and independent for longer at home will be discussed at Adult Health and Social Care Committee this week.

‘Living the life you want to live’ has a vision that ‘everyone in Sheffield lives in a place they can call home, in communities that care, doing things that matter to them, celebrated for who they are - and when they need it, they receive care and support that prioritises independence, choice, and recovery.’ The Adult Health and Social Care Policy Committee will meet on 18th June to discuss the report, which covers several key areas and updates:

• More people are accessing the Council’s ‘First Contact’ team and effective prevention, and signposting is resulting in a lower proportion of people progressing to a Care Act needs assessment.

• Data is also showing improvements in the number of people awaiting an assessment across occupational therapy services and improved response times.

• The successful launch of the Adult Health and Social Care’s Home First transformation will allow for services to work more seamlessly together and have a positive impact on access to reablement, which is vital support in the home after a stay in hospital or an illness. Working effectively together is continuing to support access to reablement and more timely discharges from hospitals, which will result in more people through the service but fewer of these people requiring long term support. Work continues with hospital discharges around appropriate referrals so that people go to the right settings. The aim is to continue to reduce referrals to care homes to 1% in accordance with national guidance. Work is in progress alongside partners in Sheffield to both maintain and develop the Discharge to Assess model with Mental Health hospital wards.

charity receives award

The team at children’s cancer charity Candlelighters is celebrating after winning two awards. They were awarded the Charity Excellence prize in the Yorkshire Choice Awards. These awards are designed to recognise the achievements of Yorkshire’s most inspiring individuals and organisations. They also took top place in the prestigious Charity Governance Awards, in the Challenge to Change category. CEO Emily Wragg comments: “We’re thrilled to have our work recognised by two independent award panels. We received the Charity Governance Award for our work in setting up Champs Pantry, a food service for families whose children are receiving hospital cancer treatment. An unseen difficulty of hospital stays, for the parents of children with cancer, is the cost of food for parents, as the NHS only provides food for the child patients.” She adds: “Even before the cost-of-living crisis, research found that families were spending an additional £600 a month on average due to their children’s illnesses, which could now be as much as £730 a month. With families facing increased financial strain, extra costs like travel, hospital parking and meals add to their burden. Our trustees saw an urgent need to address the issue in a sustainable way. In response, we decided to pilot Champ’s Pantry. The

pantry is stocked with a range of healthy meals, snacks, and essential food items, all provided free of charge to the parents and siblings of children undergoing cancer treatment.”

The Charity Governance Awards, now in their tenth year, recognise exceptional charity governance, while sharing exemplary work that inspires and informs boards and trustees across the country.

“We receive no government funding. We’re able to provide specialised services for children diagnosed with cancer and their families, as well as investing in life-changing research, because of the wonderful people, communities, and businesses that support Candlelighters.”

Each year, around 150 children in Yorkshire are diagnosed with cancer. When a child is diagnosed, lives are turned upside down instantly for the whole family. Candlelighters offers family support in many forms, from practical financial support for families and funded holidays, to talking therapies, wellbeing treatments and support groups for siblings. worst electricity wasters

An electrical expert has identified some common household appliances that may be consuming more energy than you think Data shows that game consoles left on standby cost UK households 60 times more than TVs left on standby, at a whopping £231 million a year collectively. The expert explained “When thinking about big energy consumption, many people focus on the usual suspects, washing machines or tumble dryers, but overlook the constant drain from devices that run 24/7.”

Old fridges and freezers

Your fridge runs constantly, and older models of 10 years old or more use substantially more electricity than newer ones. Fridge freezers often draw between 100 and 250 watts so making sure what you have is running efficiently is a top priority, and this can be done by checking the energy rating, making sure your fridge door is sealed properly, and cleaning it as well.

Set-top boxes and gaming consoles Many of us likely leave these in standby mode, thinking they use minimal power. However, many

set-top boxes and gaming consoles draw around 3 to 5 watts of electricity even when not actively used.

Outdoor security lights

Motion-activated security lights can use surprising amounts of electricity if poorly adjusted. If your lights get triggered by passing wildlife this can waste energy throughout the night. Making changes to your sensitivity settings helps. Chargers and power adapters

You may have several chargers plugged in around your home that continue drawing small amounts of power even when nothing is connected to them, and even though one charger not in use can only amount to just a few pence a year, having multiple chargers around the house can make this number build up. The expert advises people to search their homes to find anything that can be secretly adding to their energy bills. “Walk through your home and note anything that stays plugged in continuously,” he suggested. Smart meters can help identify usage patterns and find unexpected energy guzzlers.

Work begins to create Sheffield’s biggest mural

The bare brown brick side of the NCP building exterior on Wellington Street in Sheffield before a mural is painted on it Work has begun on an impressive new mural project in Sheffield City Centre, which is set to be the city’s biggest piece of street art to date.

Measuring 483.69 square metres in total, the artwork will be painted across 6 facades of the brown-brick NCP building, paying homage to the natural topography which has defined Sheffield since the 12th century, as a city built on hills and rivers. Sheffield graphic artist, Rob Lee, will be collaborating with

prolific street artist INSA over the next three weeks, as their signature styles bring the whole north facing elevation of the NCP car park on Wellington Street, to life. For both artists, the new work presents one of the most technically challenging projects of their careers so far.

The mural, named ‘Rivers and Hills’ has been commissioned by Marketing Sheffield as part of the Sheffield Inspires campaign, which aims to highlight the city’s positive attributes and global impact.

The mural supports one of the key themes of the campaign, Sheffield inspires greener cities, which celebrates our extensive greenspace along with sustainable initiatives such as Grey to Green, which are being used as a case study for the future development of other towns and

cities.

Uniquely funded, the ambitious mural has been made possible thanks to several local businesses and organisations, who have helped collaboratively fund the work, including Sheffield BID, Sheffield Chamber of Commerce, Henry Boot plc, Sheffield Property Association, My Business Coach Limited, Taylor Emmet Solicitors, Colloco, HLM Architects, Bond Bryan, The Lime Trees and Reach Timelapse Ltd. The project has also received funding from Sheffield’s Festival of The Outdoors.

As the final designs for the mural project are being kept tightly under wraps for now, street art fans will be able to watch as the intricately designed new work progresses each day and transforms another key focal point of the city centre.

Rotherham United can confirm that Dale Tonge has been appointed as the new assistant manager at AESSEAL New York Stadium.

The Milers have paid a compensation fee to Peterborough United to secure the services of a member of staff that Matt Hamshaw had clearly outlined as a top target upon taking the manager’s job on a permanent basis.

Hamshaw has now completed assembling his coaching staff for the upcoming Sky Bet League

One season, with Tonge’s

appointment. The news follows the incomings of Richard Wood as first team coach and Ross Burbeary as the new head of performance, with Dale Tonge taking the second-in-command position.

Tonge has a strong history with the Millers, having made over 160 appearances as a player for the club over the course of a seven-year stint and has experienced life as a coach at AESSEAL New York Stadium when he returned in a voluntary capacity to assist Paul

Warne.

After making over 300 total career appearances during his playing days, the former full-backcome-midfielder hung up his boots in 2017. Soon after, he was back involved with the game and was Assistant Manager at his hometown club of Barnsley, helping the Tykes to win promotion to the Championship in the 2018/19 season.

More recently, the Millers’ new man has spent time at Peterborough United, as First Team Coach since 2022, where he won two

EFL Trophies. Tonge will now partner up with Matt Hamshaw in time for the side returning to Roundwood at the end of the month to ensure that adequate preparations are in-place for the upcoming Sky Bet League One season.

Andy Warrington, who previously occupied the role of assistant manager has now reverted to his specialised position of goalkeeper coach.

After signing on the dotted line, Tonge expressed his excitement in re-joining the club as Hamshaw’s assistant.

The PFA also highlighted the significant personal and professional impact caused by such delays, noting that “the uncertainty it causes is made worse when there appears to be a lack of clear communication regarding the reasons for these issues and when payments can be expected.”

“It’s an exciting time to be a part of the club, especially as it looks to move forward.

“The gaffer is new onto his role but has fresh eyes and ears on a style of play that the fans are going to enjoy.

“Already having a strong relationship with the backroom staff was a big attraction and their passionate affiliations to the club is clear for everyone to see. That is a big asset to Rotherham United.

“The people are willing to go above and beyond for the club.

I’ve worked under a lot of successful managers and understand what is needed to win promotions and be successful, and I want to bring that experience here to help the gaffer and the lads.”

After finalising the deal, Tonge was keen to thank those at Peterborough UniteD.

“I’ve got nothing but thanks and positive words about that club and the people there.

“We had a successful 18 months and I will always be grateful for what they did for me. “
