CRAIGIE HORSFIELD (b. 1949, Cambridge, UK) is recognized as a leading contempo rary artist. He has undertaken extensive research and is an authority on photo graphic and related non photographic mediums and has worked with still photo graphy, video and film installations, fresco, tapestries, and other techniques. Since 1993 he has focused on collaborative social projects concerning relation, such as the more recent Naples Conversation, Naples (2008-2016); Madrid Conversation, Madrid (2006-2012); El Hierro Conversation, Canary Islands (2001-2005); Brussels Summer and Ravenstein Conversation, Brussels (2000); The Rotterdam Project, Rotterdam (1997-1998); and La cuitat de la gent (The City of the People), Barcelona (1993-1996). Solo museum exhibitions worldwide have dominated the presentation of his work over the years, including at M HKA (Antwerp), Museo di Capodimonte (Naples, Italy), Museum of Contemporary Art (Sydney), Centro de Arte Moderna, Fundacao Calouste Gulbenkian (Lisbon), Jeu De Paume (Paris), Stedelijk van Abbe Museum (Eindhoven), Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam), Kunsthalle (Zurich), ICA (London), Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris), National Gallery (London), to name just a few. THE HORSFIELD TAPES: TALKING THE TALK Adrian Dannatt Preface to the Interview

Meeting Craigie Horsfield is different, from expectations, from most things. It is an encounter, no, an experience, perhaps best to say an “engagement” (with political associations of the engagé) that leaves one surprised, refreshed, exhilarated, and caffeinated, somehow more alive than an hour or so before. It is plain amazing. One may divine a tone of puritanical asceticism to Horsfield’s work, and if you enjoy sorting out artists into “Cavaliers” or “Roundheads” there is no doubt that he is on Cromwell’s side, but when you are with him it is the infectious gales of laughter, that vertiable cliché of the twinkle in the eyes, the wit and levity, the sheer good humor that is so inspir ing; Horsfield makes clear that being an artist of high seriousness, which he is, should never be confused with solem nity, pomposity, lack of humor. Horsfield always describes his work in terms of a “conversation” and so by now he has become very good at this, has developed his own unique manner of being-inthe-world, of being in this engagement that is essential to the work, and here one might use “The Work” in both a psychoanalytic and spiritual sense, some exotic zone between Lacan and Ouspensky where the act of listening becomes an active rather than passive transformative tool. There is something of another era to all this, which frankly in our present era is always a relief; this could at first be con strued as 18th century, a Gallic or perhaps Franco-Polish tradition of enlightenment discourse, Voltaire and Krasicki deep in some “Thursday dinner” but which then comes to seem visionary—Victorian, in Darwin-Ruskin mode, shifts into Russian revolutionary discourse, the first one, 1905, and heads deep into associated theatrical and cinematographic territory, the radical theory of those years; for some reason I always associate Horsfield with the true radicality of European culture before the First World War, of which Baudrillard remarked, “it must always be remembered that the great innovations of the 20th century all took place already before 1914.” Wherever one wants to locate it, Horsfield’s manner of speech is the ulti mate anti-Twitter, just as his photographs are the diametric opposite of Instagram. Instead of “social media,” Horsfield has forged a “social contract” that replaces Snapchat with a three-decker omni bus volume of novel dimensions, an open-ended discussion of potentially limitless duration. It must be added that

for all his emphasis on “conversation” Horsfield’s own social style tends more to the monologue, sometimes even bordering on the frisson of the manic, an astonishing chain of associations and implications, arguments and countertheories, reference and repetition, broken up by those machine-gun bursts of high mirth and an absolute sincerity unnerving in its innocence. For someone so very English, his voice is beautiful, soft, sing-song, deliciously modulated and like that of many bril liant Marxists of his generation tinged with the tempting echo of some sort of grandeur, Bloomsbury or county, clergy or cavalry, lingering in the not too distant hinterland, yes, for someone so very English, Horsfield’s conversation is extremely foreign. Because what he does is sit down and “engage” you in an openly, unabashedly philosophical debate around the issues his works provoke or embody, a debate that he does not modify or moderate according to the climate of the event. He will not simplify or bastardize these ideas depending on the usual level of discussion to which his audience is accustomed, for that would be both compromise and condescension. If you do not understand, if you do not “believe” then he will try and bring you with him, but he will never cheat the in tegrity of his own argument by dimming its bright wattage. And after an hour of this, one may realize, being English also (or Welsh in my case, another national exemplar of the prolix if not verbose) that this is something completely different, this is closer to one of those frightening things one has always avoided, because they are embarrassing, too raw, too personal, one of those religious cults or spiritual gurus or self-help sects; this is not just an artist talking about his work, this is a “hap pening,” a “performance,” a “workshop” of an intensity all the more extreme for being so unexpected. Horsfield himself would greet this notion with one of his joyful hoots of laughter, especially any association with the sacred or liturgical, but there is something to his presence, when he really “goes for it,” when all those engines are on fire, which comes to feel somewhere between a Gurdjieffian “meeting with a remarkable man” and a personal one-on-one dramatic work out with Antonin Artaud, where one can no longer be sure where the stage ends and reality begins, whether he is still “on script” or has shifted into some new disturbing terrain.

No, there is no mystic mumbo-jumbo to Horsfield’s conversation but within its streamlined integrity and melliflu ous magic there is definitely something richer, stronger, odder than we are used to in such circumstances. The art work is a conversation according to Horsfield and likewise, going both ways, the conversa tion is in itself an art work, an experience, needing no other props, no visual objects to clutter its integrity; the work of art is in your mind, it is this discussion, it is this precise moment of understanding, be coming lost, focusing, “believing” again. Horsfield makes works in many different media but perhaps the rarest, the most ephemeral and thus most potent, are those he conjures from his spoken words, from the pleasure of his actual presence, the zest of his ideals, the hard-won reward of his honesty. One thinks of the notorious conversation of Bruce Chatwin with Werner Herzog, a forty-eight hour marathon of nothing but talk, about everything, exhaustively, endlessly, insanely, of the great philo sophical traditions of such oral wisdom, of Einstein and Tagore, of very late nights around proverbial kitchen tables and very early mornings in distant deserts, of what has been done throughout history, and still can be done, at a garden café in a ba nal corner of North London, with nothing but ideas and language and energy, and with the banishing of any fear of seeming obtuse or abstract or suspect. For myself I love this stuff, I could just sit and listen to Horsfield talk—and to be honest one does not always have any other choice— for as long as he wished and as widely as he wanted, as deep as long. I may not ful ly understand but can relish instead this opportunity to shift our standard concep tion of things, that normative framework for filing and judging, to shift it all, albeit only for as long as the coffee or voice stays with you. For here Horsfield asks us to dare for something harder and higher, a difficulty forged paradoxically from utter simplicity, this limitless conversa tion born from the ability to also remain completely silent for as long as it takes.

ADRIAN DANNATT:

As a photographer is your work predicated on aesthetic criteria, the formal qualities of an image or based around something far more ambitious? CRAIGIE HORSFIELD: I have never thought of myself as a photographer; as an artist I work with many different mediums and this notion of the artist being concerned with ideas and working them across mediums is something that I fought for through most of my life. It is easier now but even today there is still a limit. Although it is true that a lot of my work uses means that would have been described as “photographic” once, just as most visual media today, and certainly everything that is reproduced, is mediated by what would once have been photography, almost universally in terms of a computer’s data. It makes photography so diffuse as a term that few would cling to the idea of photography as being homog enous and of a singular meaning, which in any case has hardly been apposite since the 19th century. I have not picked up a camera in two years; I write music, I am producing sound works, prints, and frescos so I am not particularly engaged at that level with photography. But your ques tion is about aesthetics, and obviously the language we use has a meaning; you use a very particular language which is evolved thoughtfully, you make notes about lan guage, about the way words are used, in a sense your attention is a part of your means of expression in so far as you shape, consciously shape, language in giving at tention to it. And it’s so with the other me diums we use, whether I am working with sound or printing or making a tapestry, each brings aesthetic associations particu lar to the medium as well as specific tech nical demands. We speak with a language which is in many ways not so very different from Shakespeare’s but we are also con scious of differences in the intervening four hundred years. Language is made new in both what we perceive it to have in common with its past and in its difference; it’s made new of course, by the new mean ings that we use it for, and give to it. And the associations that it brings and those we make are a part of our doing something utterly different with and through it, just as our experience is particular, in fact we both use and form this history in our speaking

still in your photographs does the issue of the composition, the structure of the image, have significance?

Is it different from your thoughtfulness and attention to the structure of a sen tence, to a phrase, a paragraph? I don’t think these are different kinds of decisions, though clearly they bring different em phases, different usages. In a sound work I am conscious that the kinds of dynamic, the ways in which I organize sound are not very different from the way I organize light and shadow or in a drawing the arrange ment of lines and shading. And what others have done, things I have seen, things I have learned from, read, they are going to affect significantly what I do. They form our lan guage. It’s a living thing and those who see a portrait or a landscape or a still life that I make as a kind of pastiche of a historical model, a painting or drawing, make a banal, even absurd, misreading. The work may be good or bad but it is doing something else. Rather I would say actually we speak in the context of all the time that opens to us, as with Shakespearian English, we speak in the context of other uses of our language that shape how we construct a sentence, how we put ideas together; it draws on all kinds of reference, association, recog nitions, the whole history of language so far as we each may understand it. When people look at a photograph they imagine it was created instantly, however it’s much more complex; when you begin what would have been a negative, or now is registered as data, it works like a sketch for a paint ing or a written first draft, or even just first notes, for a novel, it’s an outline, a set of possibilities. It only becomes over time, over those months or years, it becomes what you are capable of understanding and making, and it draws in all those associa tions. So it’s not that you’re creating every thing all at once or that the world gives you it fully formed, but rather that things ac crete, those kinds of recognitions and as sociations that you then, in part, articulate. So when people look at these photographs of course they can just say “that’s attrac tive” or perhaps “I’m not much interested in that,” and walk on, but they can, if they’re attentive, over time come to recognize from their own experience, their own read ings, things they have seen before, other levels of meaning, and there are many of them, there are in fact all kinds of allusions. In time, I suppose also an alternative history of the world is shaped between us. can you generate so many allusions within the limitations of pictorial composition . . .

why would you be opposed to that? CH: Because it’s insistent, it doesn’t allow for that openness, the way a sensibility is particular and utterly individual and changes in the individual from one time to another. I may look at it a week later and think why was I so careful? Is there something which matters that can be read here without feeling a slight distaste or discomfiture? We feel the same thing in our relationships, someone may be at a raw moment in their life where one feels slight ly wary about how to act, should I comfort them or should I keep a distance, those are the kinds of negotiations which we make in life. It is one element but there are others to which one remains indifferent, try as you might, they just remain closed. If I went to the National Portrait Gallery in London I would see an entire museum given over to faces with nothing to be done for them, they represent only an iconography of fame or repute. AD: But

how is that different in practical terms to, say, an anonymous portrait, especially as few can recognize the “celebrities” of today? CH: Well, if you go round the corner to the National Gallery in general you don’t have that same effect. AD: Because

of a difference in the making of the image? CH: No, because evidently most of them were made for the same reason, for the acknowledgement and assertion of power, recognition, for all the things historically patrons paid to have their portraits made. It’s rather that something else happens in the paintings that moves us, affects us, which doesn’t happen in everything. There is work of record, information, and illustra

tion, there is a function within society for those, there is a function for the National Portrait Gallery. AD: So

what is the difference between a Goya painting in his “Portraits” show at the National Gallery and a painting round the corner at the National Portrait Gallery? CH: Goya is often a clumsy painter, tech nically clumsy, the paintings which work curiously finessed that clumsiness into something else, that does something dif ferent, so the very clumsiness becomes part of its effect. Although these are works in which the attention is closer and more intense. But Goya also made a lot of very dull pictures, which are merely clumsy and do nothing else, which one could assume he was doing to put food on the table. You don’t need to look at the work of other artists, within Goya’s own work you can see the difference. There are those others which are tremendously effective where one has some sense of the present, of the presence of the other, and the conversa tion between Goya and the person he was working with, it becomes more than a de piction, something else happens. It’s that difference, even within one artist’s work, that shift between an image we merely pass by and something we give time to, so that something else happens in our atten tion. I have sometimes been described as being a pictorialist; it is profoundly wrong. AD: In

the portrait tradition I think of those photographs by Braco Dimitrijevi´ c, the face of a passer-by blown up to this monumental billboard presence, how we then “read” fame or power into an anonymous visage. CH: The strongest, most frequent criticism made of my portraits was that they were

too “confrontational”; why would a collec tor want this direct confrontation with the face of someone who was neither friend or family, nor famous, a face which did not have any such narrative behind it to explain its presence on their wall. It was not con frontation that troubled people, it was a confusing present and disturbing presence. The example that you give is of something different, as you say, the scale we associ ate with power or fame and the meanings are given by the form and context. I have only rarely made a portrait of anonymity, and that quite consciously.

And in conversation lots of things happen, it’s not only about informa tion, or even goodwill, this is not to weigh a great philosophical burden on the every day exchanges that we have, but I think we are conscious that we become different with whomever we are talking to, with one person you’re slightly different to how you are with another, as indeed they are with us. So we bring to bear on those conver sations other relationships that we have, AD: Y our work is “social” in general or rather they inflect our experience, and but surely more within “society” our recognitions. and changes our perceptions, again not always for the good. We may invite that, it may be part of what we look for; when I read I want to feel not only engaged but provoked to thought, not by obvious pin prick provocation, rather to feel engaged in thought together with others. This opens to quite difficult ideas about how we think the past, and in photography in particular the “having been,” which lent itself very well to the notion of photography as me mento mori, of things seized from the past, which leads to a sort of sentimentality that I reject utterly. I don’t see there as being what was called in linguistics the indexicality, the “trace of the thing,” the actual trace, which differentiated photography from painting. I would argue that the past, so far as we understand it, is a part of our present, not an archeology or something “having been” but the articulation of a part of our present for which we have no other words or other means of understanding. When looking at a photograph or a film we are alive, rather than being about life. It may be about thoughts of death, but it is first of all an expression of life and our consciousness is, we suppose, life. And that is my starting position on this “expan sive present,” the space that curiously the photograph conventionally was thought to squeeze into this infinitesimally small opening of the shutters, time that we couldn’t see or be conscious of, so it was always imagined to be lost. I am speaking about the idea of a “present” that we could inhabit. When I speak of “slow time” peo ple think of that as being concerned with prolonged attention, taking time to look, rather than with the busyness of everyday life, rushing around always thinking about something that has happened or planning for the future so you never have time for this mid-space that is undetermined. It is

this and it is more than this and this more has implications for politics as well, be cause the most radical political gesture, as we have seen again and again, is recuper ated almost immediately to become some thing else, to become a label on a coffee shop or the “mission statement” of some great museum. In this banality the whole thing is eviscerated of any kind of active meaning or rather it becomes another action. So “slow time” for me was always associated with this idea of an “expansive present” which allows us in some sense to think inside it and to act. However these may sound to be rather esoteric matters if you simply put them in a box, separated from life but this is no eccentric theory, it is what we make, what we do, how we look, how we act, how we read, how we are with others. It is social, it concerns being and our understanding of others and of ourselves as individuals and together, and it concerns what art may be. AD: D o

you decide to have a “conversation” with a sitter based on visual criteria, how they look, or on their milieu? CH: I think it’s based on whatever comes from the conversation—a literal conver sation—and that has been complicated because I am not a polyglot and have lived and worked through a lifetime very often in places where I speak very little of the language, whether in Kraków or Barcelona, Madrid, Rotterdam, or Naples. But I could say that my relationship with my neighbors in London is rather less good than in those other places in which I have lived, and we are supposed to speak the same language! That leads into all kinds of other ideas of place and the means we have to live to gether, to communicate, to understand each other and art is obviously within that.

IF WE THINK ABOUT CITIES AS THESE VAST ENTITIES WHICH WE HAVE NO EFFECT ON, THEN WE’RE JUST REPLICATING THE DISQUIETS OF OUR FELLOW CITIZENS WHO DON’T VOTE, OR THINK THEY CAN DO NOTHING TO CHANGE ANYTHING

I am always wary about any definition of art which supposes it to be one thing and homogenous. In earlier societies art was largely tied to religious expression, to ritual, and there possibly you could speak about “one art” but in our society there are ob viously numerous definitions of what it is, and what it can be. Nonetheless I would ar gue for it mattering, for it not being some whim or fancy, that it can be part of our at tention to “relation,” the ways in which we give attention to each other, to the world and our predicament. AD: I still

am not sure how or why you choose a subject. CH: I have no subject and we choose each other. Some of these portraits that I make are made with people I can’t claim that I know very well but within the sphere of our conversation, if we are both attentive, then it forms a world in its own, clearly within limits. So when I make pictures with people through this conversation, you need to imagine it as a part of another wider conversation, it could be friends or friends of friends, who bring us together. The first time I came back, after forty years absence, to Naples, I’d been invited to make a show and very typically they only got round to bringing me there about a month before the show opened. I arrived at the airport and the young assistant, who clearly knew nothing, had been sent to meet me as the sacrificial lamb who could be blamed when it failed, as it was bound to do with no time left; the curator was staying well out of this, as was the museum. We were both somewhat careful when we found each other, got into a taxi and using her phone and the taxi driver’s phone we telephoned friends to meet and talk, and friends of these friends, until suddenly just from this taxi a world began

to evolve. That sounds very simple and I certainly don’t claim any special insight as a result, but it did correspond with the way I imagine the communities in which we live. A lot of these “social projects” come out of a work we made in Barcelona, a project to study the city, and it really broke down after three years into two camps; one said we have to stick with established notions of society and studies of urbanization, if we go beyond that it will just be a café conversation with no purchase on any thing meaningful. And I of course was in the other camp which argued that if we think about cities as these vast entities which we have no effect on then we’re just replicating the disquiets of our fellow citi zens who don’t vote, or think they can do nothing to change anything. Rather look at ourselves, our friends, their friends, even the museum itself, the people who work there, their families, because essentially as we go out from that there are sets and groups of relationships which meet others, and others, and others, and this is the way to think the city. Which is ultimately related to this existential question about being and relation, which has a political dimension as well. It’s not at first a philosophical propos al, but something which we all experience and act within, not always comfortably. My relationship with my neighbors, as I was saying, is not necessarily very good but we are very conscious of our effect on them and theirs on us. So this taxi trip in Naples reflected, in a very small way, that larger vision of how cities happen and how they live, how we make our way through them, not about a street map but about your friends, your family, chance acquaintances, people you bump up against. This is what we all do, and it is not to be overlooked.

such ways your project, your oeuvre, extends well beyond the confines, the assumptions, of the established commercial art system. CH: Artists when asked why they make something will frequently reply “I like this” and “I like that” and “I like doing this,” it’s as much of our time as the assumption, which I noticed recently being attributed to Duchamp, that “art is what I say it is,” and you hear this as a given around contempo rary art—of course it’s total bullshit. You often hear this in art schools, and it is a time of the near absolute academicisation of art, where young people are being subsi dized by parents, by the state, by the vast machinery of our present society in which there are all kinds of assumptions, very de termined notions, about what art is, ideas which they will conform to. When you go to an art fair you don’t see a prolixity of meanings, you see a very small range of in terpretations of what art is and does. Again I’m not saying this as a critique, the critical view should be of the context, of the world that shapes it, but we must be attentive to it for it may carry all sorts of implications which are not so benevolent. AD: Your

discourse, your way of thinking and speaking about art, this very conversation, is part of your difference. CH: I had a show recently and they said, as always, “a nominee for the Turner Prize,” which is a nonsense, the thing didn’t mat ter then and in fifty years of work it’s an irrelevance. However, at the time in the press I was described as a “European in tellectual” but disparagingly, it’s England, and in two words a double jeopardy! What a chasm of misunderstanding there is in this. I would argue that these things that we have been talking about are not at first

profoundly philosophical matters but ones that all of us think about in some way, at some time, though we may not express it in the same way.

The girl seemed almost indifferent, perhaps a little amused at her boyfriend’s pleasure, his air of daring, his bravado. I saw Antoni some months later at the academy. I introduced him to a friend, a foreign student; she was escaping a failed romance and her ghostly lover seemed to sit on her shoulders, she was aggressive and scared, frightened by a city she did not understand. Antoni lived on Rzeznicza Street with his parents. At the other end of the street there was a slaughterhouse and, close by, a chocolate factory, beyond that, the Vistula River. In the still of a hot sum mer’s day a nauseating sweetness hung in the air. Antoni’s father taught guitar at the music school and for a while Antoni and I had a band and practiced in the school rehearsal rooms on Sundays. Antoni was an only child, and his parents doted on him. They were slight and frail beside their son. With strangers they were reserved, re treating into the dark rooms away from the street when visitors called. The first winter I lived on Mazowiecka Street. My wife joined me in January and we shared a small studio above a factory that stood almost alone, beyond new apartment blocks; of the area’s older build ings, only this and the police house oppo site remained. Beyond them were small al lotments and the tall rank grass of deserted lots. The apartment had a ramshackle balcony, glassed in and overrun with the knotted branches of an ancient wisteria.

Several panes were broken and the snow would blow in flurries into the balcony and sweep under the door to the rooms within. For weeks we both lay in a fever, huddling together, watching the snow scattering like sand across the floorboards, too weak to bring coals for the corner stoves up the narrow stairs from the courtyard below. Almost alone of our friends, Antoni would come to the house, climbing the stair with tin buckets of coal. He brought with him jars of honey, their contents solid in the cold, and warmed them in saucepans once the stoves were lit. A year later my wife and I were separated. I did not see Antoni that winter; I lived in another part of town and we lost touch. Sometimes I thought I saw him at one of the dance clubs I worked in, and would pretend that I had not noticed: I felt embarrassed by the old life or perhaps by the new. Now, though, I don’t suppose he was there. I was rarely near Rzeznicza Street. Antoni had disappeared, or may be I had. Fifteen years later, in London, my brother was looking for a desk space and answered an ad from a group of graphic artists who had an empty place in their office. My brother is eight years younger than I am, and looks, I suppose, more like myself when young than I do now. The office was run by Antoni; he asked if we were related. Coincidence demands explanation, some protest against the irrational world. Yet in Boris Pasternak’s Doctor Zhivago the characters are set adrift across a conti nent in the chaos of civil war, but meet and part again, with a terrible illogic. They seem wholly the creatures of history, the

subjects of an indifferent universe. Carried back and forth, thrown together, separat ed, they are together only for moments over years, and yet there is the sense that their meetings, however melancholy, however cruel the subsequent partings, describe at once the limit and the possi bility of the human condition. In the fractured and traumatic space between these people, in the way they stand one to another, is traced their being and a community. Their relation accounts the innumerable intimacies of the mass. Through them flows, for all that they are unknowing of it, the unceasing pulse of the individual and history.

Another year had passed before I visited my brother again, and everything had changed. Across a group of his earlier and new masterpieces, “New Works and Slow Time” traverses the photographic oeuvre of Craigie Horsfield (b. 1949, Cambridge, UK): art as a shared experience rooted in his notion of “slow time”—imagined as attention to and expansion of an ordinary present of which the past is understood as a dimension, a deep present. The structure of this exhibition and catalogue took shape gradually at meetings in London over the past year. By reason of Horsfield’s far-reaching artistic commitment, the logic begged to be allied with it. His principles were first put forward publicly in the astonishing large-scale photographs, which appeared in 1988. I got a rare chance to see them and meet the artist shortly after, and, it seems that not only my interest in his singular approach, but more generally, in the research of the problematic that it brought with it, and in collecting and exhibiting, started and continues in view of this problematic. Working over 45 years in the field of social projects in contemporary art, Horsfield has opened significant conceptions of community and the individual. Photography, film, sound, drawing, performance, installation, and other media are used as instruments in the thinking of “relation,” “slow time,” the “present,” “attention,” and consciousness.2 “Relation,” the idea at the center of his life work, proposes that being is generated “between” individuals—simply expressed: we bring each other into being—and that being happens, takes place, in each encounter, each meeting, each conversation. This is the sphere, according to Horsfield, of relating as “telling,” significantly a double meaning in English, the sphere of arts’ working for him.

Focused on the artist’s ongoing research in photography, the show at The Merchant House includes large black-and-white photographs from a group regularly seen in museums worldwide and in the Netherlands (the Stedelijk, Amsterdam in 1992 and

van Abbe, Eindhoven in 2002); the so-called Irresponsible Drawings, differ ently, but nonetheless “photographically” made—that is by a light-trace from ob jects, such as flowers, food, or drinking vessels; and new pieces that employ digital print technologies developed by Horsfield and used in a most intense and creative attention to nature, the phenom enal world, and to others in portraits made as profound conversations.

All previous programs at The Merchant House have drawn on their relationship with the space to say more about the art for general audiences and collectors alike. Horsfield’s vision gathers palpably and profoundly in each piece, be it large (of his city scenes like Plaça de Toros La Monumental, Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, Barcelona, February 1996) or relatively small (a portrait or a few dry morels), and therefore his exhibition con ceived as an installation-in-progress could go further. With a slowed-down response process and change in perspective, it could offer a wealth of intimacy with the art and invite a different way to communicate. Horsfield’s unquestionably twenty-firstcentury oeuvre has been a subject of many large shows and extensive scholarship con sidering its historical and painterly associa tions and immediate currency. The setting in an Amsterdam canal house, a contem porary gallery space and a monument rich “Craigie Horsfield: New Works and Slow Time” at The Merchant House, September 2016 in allusions to the Dutch Golden Age of (installation view) portraiture and still-life, creates a naturally telling encounter with art history. It makes explicit, without the need to periodize, the differences of this artist’s particular union of an idea with materiality (the need to “produce the appearance differently,” according to the writer Jean-François Chevrier’s definition of the tableau, and in the process eschew conceptualistic indexicality, symbolism, and signification). A changing installation in an intimate public venue with historic roots and egalitarian aims, such as The Merchant House, could therefore become a search for the most favorable conditions under which to experience this complex art. Along with precision of craftsmanship, Horsfield’s own words—“telling”—have also called for close inspection. Rich in content, his texts and interviews share an unerringly observant mind and, as might be expected, a quality of attention. Two such texts are paired in this catalogue: Horsfield’s project for the 1994 Artforum is given a new per spective in this show and a new context placed next to a fresh interview with the art critic Adrian Dannatt, one of the first to write about his radical photography. Chance and intentional links inhered in these texts are a case in point and not to be overlooked. With much benefit for the exhibition, a case can also be made to incorporate Hartsfield’s captions as important elements in his textual fabric (his art is never marked “Untitled”). As short documents rather than more typically titles, the captions systematically record two dates (that of the image origin in a conversation and of its later realization—as a sudden silence—in a chosen medium); the name of the participant (or the name of the

object in recent works), and when listed next to the artist’s, uniting them both; and a geographic location, a street address and a city, enigmatically foreign unless it is London. While questioning photogra phy’s mimetic reach in an early interview, Horsfield did affirm his art’s inescapable “residual trace to reality.” Fact specific in this way, his captions are brief records of that trace, of the onset of the image, and we as viewers can relish it in developing our own perspective.

In his 1994 project for Artforum, Horsfield—poignantly but factually— goes through the layered memory of his casual encounter on the train to Kraków in 1972 in order to corroborate his important notions of “slow time” and “relation.” He follows a similar path in the interview and, in response to Dannatt’s aporic questions about form and composition, Shakespeare, Velásquez, and Goya find themselves on the same plain—like subjects of his icon ic square photographs—with the regu lar people of Kraków, Barcelona, Madrid, Rotterdam, and Naples. Through poetic shading the texts ground Horsfield’s ar tistic position in the particular and the innermost, the considerations behind the encounters that led to the photographs in the first place, but they—intensely, almost vigilantly—are not meant to complete a picture. The point seems emphasized when Horsfield mentions that he writes music (he had also worked as a DJ while “Craigie Horsfield: New Works and Slow Time” at The Merchant House, September 2016 in Kraków): to be compared to a musical (installation view) score, visual art needs be unbound from its origin in the mind of the author and established concepts, allowing for a quality of intimacy and depth of reverberations to play out with the viewer like a performer of music. And an attentive regard to and from the viewer—a “loving gaze”—need be at the heart of the working method itself. It is thus, in the extended exhibition, with the works, the captions and the texts conjoined in Horsfield’s prescient poetic space, that our fascination is fostered by the rich thematic and physical surface of the works, by the geography of the social span and by the overall form the artist gives—singularly—to the universal subjects. It is thus, too, that they impress with a poetic fusion of photographic possibilities—a veiled territory, seductive and risky, in the age of the digitallystripped selfie and instant image exchange. Within the contours of this space, their material and conceptual aspects could indeed be seen—as Horsfield sees it—as resolving in broader aspects of perception and representation.

CRAIGIE HORSFIELD EN ADRIAN DANNATT IN GESPREK JUNI 2016 DE HORSFIELD TAPES: HET GESPREK SPREKEN Voorwoord op het interview Een ontmoeting met Craigie Horsfield is anders dan je verwacht, dan de meeste dingen. Het is een confrontatie, nee, een ervaring, misschien nog beter kan je spreken van een engagement (met politieke associaties als in het woord ge-engageerd), dat je achterlaat vol verbazing, maar verfrist, opgevrolijkt en opgepept, op de een of andere manier meer bezield dan een uur daarvoor. Het is gewoon een wonder. Men zou een zweem van puriteins ascetisme kunnen oppikken in Horsfield’s werk, en als je het leuk vindt kunstenaars onder te verdelen in rekkelijken en preciezen, dan zou hij zonder twijfel aan Cromwell’s kant, die van de puriteinen, staan, maar in zijn gezelschap zijn het juist zijn aanstekelijke lachbuien, dat waar geworden cliché van het pretlicht in de ogen, zijn geestig heid en lichthartigheid, zijn pure goede humeur die zo inspirerend is; Horsfield is het bewijs dat het kunstenaarschap dat streeft naar diep-serieuze kunst, niet verward moet worden met loden ernst, gewichtigheid of gebrek aan humor. Horsfield beschrijft zijn werk altijd in ter men van een ‘gesprek’ en inmiddels is hij daar enorm goed in geworden, hij heeft zijn unieke manier van in-de-wereld-zijn ontwikkeld, die vorm van ge-engageerdzijn die wezenlijk is voor zijn, en hier kan men de term ‘Het Werk’ gebruiken in de psychoanalytische èn de spirituele bete kenis, een exotische zone ergens tussen Lacan en Ouspensky, waar het luisteren niet passief is, maar eerder een actief instrument tot transformatie wordt. Dit lijkt allemaal te komen uit een ander

tijdperk, wat in het huidige tijdsgewricht altijd weer een opluchting is; het zou aan vankelijk kunnen worden opgevat als af komstig uit een 18e-eeuws, de Gallische of misschien Frans-Poolse traditie van verlichtingsdenken, Voltaire en Krasicki die volledig opgaan in het een of andere Donderdagse Diner, maar wat opeens kan verschijnen als visionair-Victoriaans, in de stijl van Darwin-Ruskin, en dan overgaan in een Russisch revolutionair vertoog, van de eerste revolutie, uit 1905, om dan een diepe duik te nemen in een gebied waar theater en cinema samenhangen, de ra dicale theorie van die jaren; om de een of andere reden associeer ik Horsfield altijd met de ware radicaliteit van de Europese cultuur van vóór de Eerste Wereldoorlog, waarover Baudrillard eens opmerkte ‘we moeten goed onthouden dat de grote vernieuwingen van de 20e eeuw allemaal plaatsvonden vóór 1914.’ Waar men de manier waarop Horsfield praat ook wil lokaliseren, hij produceert het ultieme anti-Twitter geluid, net zoals zijn foto’s diametraal tegenover Instagram staan. In plaats van ‘sociale media’ heeft Horsfield een ‘sociaal contract’ gesmeed dat Snapchat ver vangt door een driedelige omnibus van roman-achtige omvang, een discussie met open einde en mogelijk grenzeloze duur. Toegevoegd moet wel dat met alle nadruk op het gesprek, Horsfield’s eigen sociale stijl meer in de richting gaat van de monoloog, die soms de opwinding van het manische bereikt, in een verbijsteren de keten van associaties en herhalingen, onderbroken door die uitingen van groot jolijt, die knallen als een mitrailleursalvo en een absolute oprechtheid die van een verontrustende onschuld is. Voor iemand die zo door en door Engels is, heeft hij een mooie, zachte, zangerige stem, die heerlijk moduleert en net als veel briljante Marxisten van zijn genera tie gekleurd is met de verleidelijke echo van grandeur, van Bloomsbury of adel, de geestelijkheid of de cavalerie, die niet ver op de achtergrond sluimert, ja, voor iemand die zo door en door Engels is doet een gesprek met Horsfield extreem buitenlands aan. Dat komt omdat hij gaat zitten en je ‘engageert’ in een openlijk, onbeschaamd filosofisch debat rondom de kwesties die zijn werk uitlokt en be lichaamt, een debat dat hij niet aanpast of tempert al naar gelang het klimaat van de gelegenheid. Hij versimpelt of banali seert die ideeën niet afhankelijk van het gebruikelijke niveau van discussie waar aan zijn publiek gewend is, want dat zou zowel een compromis als ook minachtend zijn. Als je het niet begrijpt, als je er niet in ‘gelooft’, dan zal hij proberen je aan zijn kant te krijgen, maar hij zal nooit een loopje nemen met de integriteit van zijn eigen argumenten door de hoge wattages een beetje te dimmen. Als dit een uurtje duurt, krijg je door, dat, ook al ben je een Engelsman (of een Welshman in mijn geval, nog zo’n nationaal oerbeeld van langdradigheid en breedsprakigheid) dit toch iets heel anders is, dit lijkt meer op een van die be angstigende dingen die je altijd hebt pro beren te vermijden, omdat ze zo bescha mend zijn, te rauw, te persoonlijk, iets als een religieuze sekte of spirituele goeroe of zelfhulpgroep; dit is niet zomaar een kunstenaar die praat over zijn werk, dit is een happening, een performance, een workshop met een intensiteit die des te extremer is omdat hij zo onverwacht is. Horsfield zelf zou deze gedachte be groeten met zijn vrolijk loeiende gelach, in het bijzonder bij iedere associatie met

het heilige of een liturgie, maar er is iets aan zijn aanwezigheid, als hij er echt voor gaat, als alle motoren op stoom komen, dat neerkomt op iets tussen een ont moeting met ‘een Opmerkelijk Man’ à la Gurdjieff en een persoonlijke één-op-één werksessie met Antonin Artaud, waar niet meer duidelijk is waar de bühne eindigt en de realiteit begint, of hij zich nog aan het script houdt of wegschiet naar nieuw en verontrustend terrein. Nee, er is geen mystiek abracadrabra in een gesprek met Horsfield, maar in zijn gestroomlijnde integriteit en zoetge vooisde magie zit iets dat rijker, sterker en vreemder is dan we gewend zijn in zulke omstandigheden. Het kunstwerk is volgens Horsfield een gesprek en daarom tweerichtingsverkeer, het gesprek is zelf een kunstwerk, een ervaring, die verder geen rekwisieten nodig heeft, geen vi suele voorwerpen die de integriteit in de weg staan; het kunstwerk is in je geest, het is deze discussie, het is dit precieze moment van begrip, de kluts kwijt raken, weer scherp worden, weer ‘geloven’. Horsfield maakt werken in uiteenlopende media maar de zeldzaamste, meest ongrijpbare en daarom krachtigste zijn de werken die hij tevoorschijn tovert met zijn gesproken woorden, met het plezier van zijn lijfelijke aanwezigheid, het enthousi asme van zijn idealen, de zwaar bevoch ten beloning voor zijn eerlijkheid. Te denken valt aan de beruchte conver satie tussen Bruce Chatwin en Werner Herzog, een 48 uur durende marathon van niets dan gepraat, over Alles, uitput tend, eindeloos, waanzinnig, over de grote filosofische traditie van zulke orale wijsheid, over Einstein en Tagore, over late, late nachten aan spreekwoordelijke keukentafels en heel vroege ochtenden in verre woestijnen, over wat er ge daan kan worden met ideeën en taal en energie, door de geschiedenis heen, en nog steeds, in een cafétuin in een banaal stukje van Noord Londen, en met het uitbannen van de angst om onbegrijpelijk of abstract of verdacht over te komen. Ikzelf ben hier dol op, ik zou gewoon achterover kunnen leunen en luisteren terwijl Horsfield praat - en om eerlijk te zijn heb je vaak geen keus - zo lang als hij zin heeft en zo weids, zo diep en zo lang als hij wil. Ik mag dan niet alles helemaal begrijpen maar in plaats daarvan kan ik genieten van de kans mijn standaardopvatting van de dingen, dat normatieve raamwerk waarmee ik alles orden en beoordeel te laten schuiven, al is het maar voor zolang als er koffie en een stem zijn. Horsfield daagt ons uit te mik ken op iets dat moeilijker en hoger is, een moeilijkheidsgraad die paradoxaal genoeg gesmeed wordt uit ultieme eenvoud, dit grenzeloze gesprek dat geboren wordt uit het vermogen om ook volkomen stil te zijn zolang als nodig. KIJK ER ALLEEN NAAR MET EEN LIEFDEVOLLE BLIK Is je werk als fotograaf vooral gebaseerd op esthetische criteria, de formele eigenschappen van een beeld of draait het om iets dat veel ambitieuzer is? CRAIGIE HORSFIELD: Ik heb mezelf nooit beschouwd als een fotograaf. Als kunste naar werk ik in veel verschillende media en de notie van de kunstenaar die zich bezig houdt met ideeën en ze uitwerkt in een scala van media is iets waarvoor ik het grootste deel van mijn leven heb gevochten. Tegenwoordig is het gemak ADRIAN DANNATT:

kelijker maar er zijn nog steeds grenzen. Het is waar dat ik in veel werk middelen gebruik die je kunt beschrijven als ooit ‘fotografisch’, zoals de meeste visuele media vandaag de dag, en het geldt zeker voor alles wat wordt gereprodu ceerd, wordt doorgegeven door wat ooit fotografie is geweest, bijna overal in de vorm van computer data. Daardoor is fotografie zo’n diffuse term geworden, dat weinig mensen willen vasthouden aan het idee van fotografie als homogeen ge geven, met een singuliere betekenis, iets wat sinds de 19e eeuw nauwelijks toepas selijk is geweest. Ik heb de laatste twee jaar geen camera vastgehad; ik schrijf muziek, ik produceer geluidswerken, gra fiek en fresco’s, dus op dat niveau ben ik niet bepaald actief met fotografie. Maar je vraag over esthetiek; uiteraard heeft de taal die we gebruiken een betekenis; je gebruikt een heel specifieke taal die zich al denkend heeft ontwikkeld, je maakt notities over taal, over de manier waarop woorden gebruikt worden, in zekere zin is je aandacht deel van je uitdrukkingsmid delen voor zover je bewust vormgeeft aan taal terwijl je er aandacht aan geeft. Het is net zo met de andere media die we gebruiken, of ik nu met geluid werk of grafiek maak of een tapijt, ze roepen stuk voor stuk esthetische associaties op die particulier zijn aan het medium, net zo goed als er sprake is van techni sche eisen. We spreken een taal die in veel opzichten niet zo verschilt van die van Shakespeare, maar we zijn ons ook bewust van de verschillen door de tus senliggende vierhonderd jaar. Taal wordt nieuw gemaakt door wat we aanmerken als datgene wat we gemeen hebben met haar verleden, en ook door haar ver schil, het wordt natuurlijk nieuw door de nieuwe betekenissen die we gebruiken en eraan toekennen. En de associaties die het oproept en die we maken zijn on derdeel van hoe wij er iets totaal anders van maken en ermee bewerkstelligen, net zo goed als onze ervaring particulier is. In feite gebruiken èn vormen we die geschiedenis door te spreken. M aar toch, heeft de kwestie van de compositie, de structuur van het beeld een betekenis in jouw foto’s? CH: Is het echt zo anders dan de zorg en aandacht voor de structuur van een zin, een frase, een alinea? Ik denk niet dat dat verschillende type beslissingen zijn, ook al is het duidelijk dat ze een andere na druk, andere gebruiksvormen oproepen. Bij een geluidswerk ben ik me bewust van de soorten van dynamiek, de manieren waarop ik geluid organiseer zijn niet zo heel anders dan de manier waarop ik licht en donker verdeel of in een tekening de lijnen en schaduwen arrangeer. En wat anderen hebben gedaan, dingen die ik gezien heb, dingen die ik geleerd heb, gelezen, die hebben een belangrijke uit werking op wat ik maak. Ze vormen een taal. Het is een levend wezen en mensen die een portret of een landschap zien, maken zich schuldig aan een banale, zelfs absurde mis-interpretatie. Het werk kan goed of slecht zijn, maar het doet iets heel anders. Ik zou liever zeggen dat we spreken in de context van alle tijd die zich voor ons opent, net als met het Engels van Shakespeare, we spreken in de con text van andere vormen van taalgebruik die vormgeven aan hoe we zinnen maken, hoe we ideeën samenvoegen; het voedt zich met allerlei verwijzingen, associaties, herkenningen, de hele geschiedenis van de taal voor zover ieder van ons die denkt te begrijpen. Wanneer mensen naar een foto kijken stellen ze zich voor dat hij in één ogenblik gemaakt is, maar het is veel complexer; wanneer je begint met wat AD:

vroeger een negatief zou zijn geweest, of nu is vastgelegd in data, dan werkt dat als een schets voor een schilderij of de eerste versie van wat je schrijft, of de eerste aantekeningen voor een roman, een opzet, een verzameling mogelijk heden. Pas na verloop van tijd, maanden en jaren, wordt het wat je kunt begrijpen en maken, en verzamelt het al die as sociaties. Het is dus niet zo dat je alles in één keer schept of dat de wereld je iets geeft met een kant en klare vorm, het is eerder zo dat de dingen zich ophopen, al die vormen van herkenning en associatie die je dan, of deels, articuleert. Dus als mensen naar deze foto’s kijken kunnen ze gewoon zeggen ‘aantrekkelijk’ of mis schien ‘daar ben ik niet zo geïnteresseerd in’ en doorlopen, maar ze kunnen ook, als ze oplettend zijn, na verloop van tijd hun eigen ervaring herkennen, hun eigen in terpretaties, dingen die ze eerder gezien hebben, andere betekenisniveaus, en er zijn er een heleboel, er zijn in feite allerlei toespelingen. Er wordt, denk ik, in de tijd, tussen ons een alternatieve geschiedenis van de wereld gevormd. oe kun je zoveel toespelingen H opwekken binnen de beperkingen van beeldcompositie... CH: We doen het de hele tijd, jij ook, de manier waarop je praat zit vol toespelingen... AD:

aar mijn manier van praten M is iets in beweging... CH: Dat is zo, dat is een belangrijk punt, conversatie is vluchtig en er is een verlei ding dit op te vatten als een Socratische crisis - Socrates schreef pas iets neer tijdens de allerlaatste dagen van zijn le ven, muziek of waarschijnlijker een soort gedicht en zijn leerlingen komen naar hem toe en vragen waarom hij dat doet, hij had altijd gezegd dat hij nooit zou schrijven. Een van de dingen aan foto’s waar ik een hekel aan had toen ik jonger was, en nog steeds, is dat de meeste een soort effect-fotografie waren, zodat je het helemaal kon snappen - een vinger klik die alle betekenissen in één keer op gebruikt en leegmaakt, je gaat een week later terug om ernaar te kijken en het is precies hetzelfde, het is de lege dop, het heeft al gegeven wat het was, en een jaar later is het niet veranderd, en dat is een soort van ‘geschreven’ fotografie, in de zin van schrijven als vastleggen, willekeu rig in zijn breuk met het heden. Doordat het een versteend verleden wordt zonder poëzie lijken ze in geen enkel opzicht op de werken waar ik steeds opnieuw naar terugkeer, en die zijn veranderd; natuurlijk ben ik veranderd en die werken openen de beweging die jij beschrijft. Ik was laatst in het Prado en Las Meninas, een schilderij waar ik nooit erg dol op ben geweest, hing op een andere plek en ik dacht ‘Mijn God, wat een geweldig schilderij!’ Ik was veranderd, de tijd had me veranderd, het licht was anders, de ruimte eromheen was nu grootmoedig. AD:

rootmoedig? Is grootmoedig G de sleutel? CH: Ja, absoluut, een van de sleutels. AD:

e grootmoedigheid van jou zelf als D kunstenaar of de grootmoedigheid van degenen die in contact komen met je werk? CH: Ik denk allebei, grootmoedig in aandacht, waarmee ik openheid bedoel, onze gevoeligheid, de grootmoedigheid in de aandacht die we iets geven. Toen ik begon met het maken van portretten met mensen die ik vond door middel van con versatie vroeg ik me altijd af, is dit iemand die ik aardig zou kunnen vinden en hoe AD:

maak je een beeld samen met mensen die je niet noodzakelijkerwijs aardig vindt? En, heb je dat gedaan? Ja, ik dacht dat ik dat moest doen, anders kom je terecht bij eigendunk, een gesloten cirkel van wat je waardeert en van vooroordelen, misverstand en een vals bewustzijn. Aan sommigen had ik een uitgesproken hekel, een paar, echt maar een paar, waren gevaarlijk. Maar in de ruimte waarin je werkt moet je de ander respecteren, dus zeg je, okay, we maken allemaal beslissingen in ons leven, meestal doen we het zo goed we kunnen, ik bedoel niet per se het goede doen, maar je er zo goed mogelijk doorheen slaan. Ik weet niets van de beproevingen van deze persoon, ik weet niets van het soort beslissingen dat hij heeft moeten nemen, of waarom ze genomen werden, dus binnen de ruimte van het gesprek moet er een mate van grootmoedigheid zijn. Anders is het gesloten, dan krijg je een karikatuur, een cartoon en dat heeft niet die weerklank, het kan nergens heen, dan is er niet de gelegenheid waarin gevoeligheid zijn werk kan doen, dan is er niets waarop die gevoeligheid kan inwerken. Het is bijna alsof je er alleen naar kan kijken met een liefdevolle blik, er moet iets van grootmoedigheid zijn, gewoon omdat dat de deur opent naar een mogelijke uitleg van de kijker, die anders het gevoel kan krijgen dat er iets gebeurt waar hij of zij niet bij kan, iets dat afgesloten is en zich niets aantrekt van zijn aandacht. Dit zou een overdreven verfijnde observatie kunnen zijn, maar er zijn ook gradaties in emotie die het werk uit balans kunnen brengen, er zijn dingen waar ik naar kijk en voor terugschrik omdat ze te rauw zijn, of dat lijken te zijn, de emotie is dan te dicht onder het oppervlak. AD: CH:

En waarom zou je daar tegen zijn? Omdat het dwingend is, het geeft die openheid geen kans, de manier waarop een gevoeligheid particulier en heel indi vidueel kan zijn en met de tijd ook in een individu verandert. Ik kan er een week later naar kijken en denken, waarom was ik zo voorzichtig? Is hier iets dat ertoe doet, iets dat hier opgepikt kan worden zonder een gevoel van lichte afkeer of ongemak op te roepen? In onze relaties voelen we hetzelfde, iemand kan zich op een rauw moment in zijn leven bevinden zodat we een beetje behoedzaam worden over hoe we ons gedragen moeten, moet ik ze troosten of afstand houden, het zijn dit soort overwegingen die we in ons leven maken. Dit is een element, maar er zijn anderen die ons koud laten, wat je ook probeert, ze blijven gesloten. Als ik naar de National Portrait Gallery in Londen ga zal ik een heel museum vol gezichten zien waarvoor je niets kunt doen, ze vertegenwoordigen alleen maar een iconografie van roem en aanzien. AD: CH:

M aar wat is het verschil in praktische termen, met bijvoorbeeld een anoniem portret, juist nu maar weinigen de beroemdheden van vandaag herkennen? CH: Nou, als je om de hoek naar de National Gallery gaat zal je over het algemeen niet datzelfde effect hebben. AD:

anwege het verschil in het maken V van het beeld? CH: Nee, omdat de meeste zonneklaar om dezelfde reden werden gemaakt, voor de erkenning en bevestiging van macht, erkenning, voor al de dingen waarvoor opdrachtgevers betaalden om hun portret te laten maken. Het is eerder zo dat er iets anders in het schilderij gebeurt wat AD:

ons raakt, ons beroert, iets dat niet in alles gebeurt. Je hebt de taak van het vastleggen, informatie geven en illustre ren, er is een functie in de maatschappij voor die dingen, er is een functie voor de National Portrait Gallery. Wat is dan het verschil tussen een schilderij van Goya in zijn portrettententoonstelling in de National Gallery en een schilderij om de hoek in de National Portrait Gallery? CH: Goya is vaak een onhandige schilder, technisch klunzig, de schilderijen die goed werken hebben die onhandigheid op een wonderlijke manier verfijnd tot iets anders, een andere werking, zodat de klunzigheid een deel van het effect wordt. Ook al zijn dit de werken waarin de aandacht grondig is en intenser. Maar Goya heeft ook heel saaie schilderijen gemaakt, die alleen maar onhandig zijn en niets anders doen, waarvan je kunt aannemen dat hij ze maakte om de kost te verdienen. Je hoeft niet naar het werk van andere kunstenaars te kijken, binnen Goya’s eigen werk kun je het verschil zien. Er zijn andere die geweldig effectief zijn, waar je iets van aanwezigheid voelt, de aanwezigheid van de ander, en het gesprek tussen Goya en de persoon met wie hij werkt, het wordt meer dan een afbeelding, er gebeurt iets anders. Het is dit verschil, zelfs binnen het werk van een kunstenaar, die verschuiving tussen een beeld dat we gewoon voorbij lopen en eentje die we tijd geven, zodat er iets anders kan gebeuren in onze aandacht. Ik ben soms omschreven als een plaatjes maker; dat is ten diepste onjuist. AD:

In de traditie van het portret denk ik aan die foto’s van Braco Dimitrejevic, het gezicht van een voorbijganger uitvergroot tot de monumentale aanwezigheid van een billboard, hoe we roem en macht aflezen van een anoniem gezicht. CH: De hevigste en meest voorkomende kritiek die mijn portretten kregen was dat ze te confronterend waren; waarom zou een verzamelaar die directe confron tatie willen met het gezicht van iemand die geen vriend of familie was, niet eens beroemd, een gezicht waarachter geen enkel verhaal zit dat de aanwezigheid aan de muur verklaart. Het was niet de confrontatie die het mensen lastig maak te, maar de verwarrende en verontrus tende aanwezigheid. Het voorbeeld dat jij geeft gaat over iets anders, zoals je zegt, de schaal die we in verband bren gen met macht en roem en de betekenis sen die verleend worden door vorm en context. Ik heb maar zelden een portret van anonimiteit gemaakt en als ik dat deed wat het vrij bewust. AD:

Je werk is over het algemeen sociaal, maar zeker meer maatschappelijk dan in de zin van high society, eerder socialistisch dan bezig met socialites. CH: Natuurlijk was ik een socialist maar we leven in een wereld waarin die ideeën zijn opgenomen in andere uitdrukkingen. Als ik nog steeds een socialist ben dat is dat op dezelfde manier waarop ik nog steeds Engels ben. AD:

Je hebt meer de uitstraling van een kluizenaar, dan van een sociaal iemand. CH: Het is waar dat mijn vrienden me niet erg gezellig vinden. Terwijl mijn hele werk draait om het begrip van het sociale, om het sociale en individuele bestaan, de re latie waarmee we elkaar tot-zijn-brengen, maar dat is iets anders dan het idee van het individu als iets dat enkelvoudig en afgebakend is. En het maken van por AD:

tretten mèt anderen, in plaats van vàn anderen maakt hier deel van uit. Mensen die me kennen zullen zeggen, Ja, maar je houdt er helemaal niet van andere men sen te ontmoeten! en het is inderdaad zo dat ik een teruggetrokken leven leidt. Ik ga niet naar feestjes en openingen (ook al ben ik daarin niet de enige), maar mijn terughoudendheid komt ergens anders vandaan. H eeft het er meer mee te maken wie je dan zou ontmoeten? CH: Helemaal niet. Over het algemeen, laten we het ruimhartig bekijken, kun je met de meeste mensen op een goeie dag een gesprek hebben, een gemeenschap pelijk of zelfs wederkerig gevoel beleven. AD:

ier zou je kunnen beweren dat H de toeschouwer door jouw werk en door zich ermee te verstaan, ook tot-zijn-gebracht wordt. CH: Ik zou het iets anders formuleren; ik denk dat een portret kan werken als een gesprek, meer dan binnen de gewoon tes die nog ouder zijn dan de fotografie, waarin het in verband gebracht wordt met het vangen van iemands gelijkenis, het nemen van een beeld, het schieten ervan, dat de weerslag is van een spe cifieke relatie. Ik zie een portret als een conversatie en het gesprek als de ruimte waarin we gericht zijn op de onderlinge verstandhouding. In gesprekken gebeuren een hoop dingen, het gaat niet alleen om informatie, of zelfs hartelijkheid, en ik wil geen zware filosofische last leggen op de alledaagse uitwisselingen die we hebben, maar ik denk dat we er wel bewust van zijn dat we veranderen door degene met wie we praten, bij de ene persoon ben je nét weer anders dan bij een ander, en dat geldt omgekeerd voor hun ook. Dus we beïnvloeden onze gesprekken met de andere relaties die we hebben, of beter, die sturen onze ervaringen en wat we herkennen bij. Dit vereist een bepaald type aandacht, en ik wil niet beweren dat het op zichzelf altijd iets goeds is, het is wel noodzakelijk, dat spreekt, en het heeft gevolgen. Ik stel me deze portret ten dus voor als gesprekken. Je kunt zeggen, ‘maar jullie zijn geen gelijken, het is niet echt een gesprek, waarin je allebei spreekt en luistert’, maar ik houd staande dat zelfs als we allebei stil zijn, er toch iets van herkenning is, een bewustzijn van de dingen die veranderen, samen. Bij een portret heeft de ene een camera en de ander zit, maar dat lijkt mij het minst be langrijke element van de situatie. Sterker, en dit is een bekentenis die ik waarschijn lijk beter niet kan doen, de laatste tijd kijk ik nauwelijks nog door de lens van de camera, omdat het me meer gaat om een besef van aanwezigheid, we zijn allebei heel stil, we zitten in een kamer samen, twee uur, soms nog langer, roerloos, en af en toe zeg ik ‘kun je die kant op kijken of die kant.’, maar het is geen instructie, meer een vraag. Het is meer een bevesti ging van iets dat er al was, dat verschijnt, want allebei onze namen komen op het werk te staan dat we samen maken. En dat gesprek kan dan in het leven ge roepen worden in iemand anders, door de aandacht van de toeschouwers, die, als ze daar open voor staan, hun eigen relaties, associaties en herkenning mee brengen als ze ernaar kijken. En zo kom je terug bij het idee van gevoeligheid, als ze het werk lezen, dan is dat niet alsof er een mannetje in het papier of de verf zit, het gebeurt in de herkenning, het lijkt meer op een boek dat we tot leven brengen, een bekende uitdrukking. Het portret is dus een gesprek tussen de mensen die het eerst samen maakten en de kijker, als die bereid is het zich eigen te AD:

maken. En dat is van belang, want ieder kunstwerk, een film, een boek, een stuk muziek, maakt dat je vol van gedachten verder gaat; misschien praat je erover met vrienden, het gaat verder, het heeft invloed die voortleeft in de wereld en onze waarneming verandert, en natuur lijk niet altijd ten goede. We kunnen dat toejuichen, het maakt deel uit van wat we zoeken; wanneer ik lees wil ik me niet alleen betrokken voelen, maar ook uitge daagd om na te denken, niet door voor de hand liggende stekelige provocaties, maar me betrokken voelen bij het denken samen met anderen. Dit leidt tot behoor lijk moeilijke ideeën over hoe we over het verleden denken, en in de fotografie met name over ‘dat wat geweest is’, dat zich heel goed leende voor de opvatting van fotografie als een memento mori, dingen weggepakt uit het verleden, maar dat leidt tot een sentimentaliteit die ik totaal afwijs. Ik zie er helemaal geen indexica liteit, zoals de taalkundigen dat noemen, het ‘spoor van het ding’, het feitelijke spoor, dat het verschil markeerde tussen fotografie en schilderkunst. Naar mijn mening is het verleden, voor zover we het begrijpen, een deel van ons heden, geen archeologie of iets dat er ooit geweest is, maar de articulatie van een deel van ons heden waar we geen andere woorden of begrip voor hebben. Als we naar een film of een foto kijken leven we, we zijn niet bezig met het leven. Het kunnen gedach ten aan de dood zijn, maar het is eerst en vooral een uitdrukking van leven en ons bewustzijn, en dat is, denken wij toch, leven. Dat is mijn uitgangspositie bij dit ‘expansieve heden’, de ruimte die volgens de traditie de foto op miraculeuze wijze in dat oneindig kleine openingetje van de sluiter wist te persen, een tijd die we niet konden zien of bewust waarnemen, en dus dachten we altijd dat die verloren ging. Ik heb het over een idee van het heden dat we zouden kunnen bewonen. Als ik het heb over Langzame Tijd denken mensen dat het gaat over langdurige aandacht, de tijd nemen om te kijken, tegenover de drukte van het dagelijkse leven, het rondrennen en denken aan iets dat gebeurd is of plannen maken voor de toekomst, zodat je nooit tijd hebt voor de ruimte daartussen, die onbepaald is. Dat is ook zo èn het is veel meer dan dat, en dat meer heeft ook implicaties op politiek vlak, want het meest radicale politieke gebaar, zoals we keer op keer gezien heb ben, wordt meteen opgevangen en veran derd in iets anders, een koffiemerk of de ‘mission statement’ van een groot muse um. Door die banalisering wordt het hele ding beroofd van iedere actieve betekenis en wordt eigenlijk een andere hande ling. Dus, Langzame Tijd is voor mij altijd verbonden geweest met het idee van het expansieve heden, die ons de kans geeft daarbinnen te denken en te handelen. Het mag nogal esoterisch klinken als je deze gedachten apart in een doosje zou doen, gescheiden van het leven, maar dit is geen excentrieke theorie, het is wat we maken, wat we doen, hoe we kijken, hoe we handelen, hoe we lezen, hoe we met anderen zijn. Het is sociaal, het gaat over Zijn en ons begrip van anderen en onszelf als individuen en samen, en dat heeft te maken met wat kunst kan zijn. D e beslissing om een portret/gesprek met iemand te hebben, baseer je dat op visuele criteria, hoe ze eruit zien, of op hun milieu? CH: Het is denk ik gebaseerd op dat wat er uit het gesprek komt - het letterlijke gesprek - en dat is wel eens ingewikkeld geweest want ik ben geen talenkenner en heb een leven lang gewerkt en geleefd op plaatsen waar ik de taal slecht sprak, AD:

in Krakau bijvoorbeeld of Barcelona, Madrid, Rotterdam of Napels. Toch kan ik zeggen dat de verhouding met mijn buren in Londen juist slechter is dan op die andere plaatsen waar ik gewoond heb, en wij worden nog wel geacht dezelfde taal te spreken! Het roept allerlei ideeën over plaats op en de middelen die we hebben om samen te leven, te communiceren, elkaar te begrijpen, en kunst valt daar uiteraard onder. Ik ben terughoudend als het om definities van kunst gaat die ervan uitgaan dat het één ding is en ho mogeen. In eerdere maatschappijen was kunst grotendeels gebonden aan religi euze expressie, aan rituelen en misschien dat je daar kunt spreken van één kunst, maar in onze maatschappij zijn er natuur lijk veel definities voor wat het is en kan zijn. En toch zou ik ervoor pleiten dat het ertoe doet, en dat het geen gril of geintje is, dat het deel kan uitmaken van onze aandacht voor de relatie, de manieren waarop we aandacht geven aan elkaar, aan de wereld, aan onze beproeving. I k snap nog steeds niet hoe of waarom je nou een iemand kiest als onderwerp. CH: ik heb geen onderwerp en we kiezen elkaar. Een paar van de portretten zijn gemaakt met mensen waarvan ik onmo gelijk kan zeggen dat ik ze goed ken maar binnen de ruimte van ons gesprek, als we allebei heel oplettend zijn, wordt het een wereld op zich, duidelijk begrensd. Dus als ik beelden maak samen met mensen door middel van dat gesprek, moet je je dat voorstellen als deel van een wijder gesprek, dat kan zijn met vrienden of vrienden van vrienden, die ons bij elkaar brengen. De eerste keer dat ik na veertig jaar in Napels terugkwam, was ik uit genodigd een tentoonstelling te maken en typerend genoeg lukte het pas me daar te laten aankomen ongeveer een maand voor de opening. Ik kwam aan op het vliegveld en de jonge assistent, die overduidelijk nergens van wist, was vooruit gestuurd om me te ontmoeten, als een offerlam die de schuld kon krijgen als het misliep, en dat lag voor de hand, omdat er geen tijd meer was; de curator bleef hier helemaal buiten, net als het museum. We waren allebei heel voor zichtig toen we elkaar gevonden hadden, stapten in een taxi en met haar telefoon en die van de taxichauffeur begonnen we vrienden te bellen om afspraken te maken en vrienden van die vrienden, net zolang tot er opeens vanuit die taxi een wereld ontstond. Dat klinkt heel simpel en ik wil zeker geen aanspraak maken op een bijzonder inzicht als gevolg hiervan, maar het correspondeerde met de manier waarop ik denk dat we in gemeenschap pen leven. Veel van deze sociale projec ten komen voort uit een werk dat we maakten in Barcelona, een project om onderzoek te doen naar de stad, en dat viel na drie jaar echt uit elkaar in twee kampen; het ene zei dat we ons moesten beperken tot gevestigde opvattingen van maatschappij en studies naar stedelijk heid, als we dat achter ons laten ontaardt het in borrelpraat die nergens toe leidt en niets betekent. En ik zat natuurlijk in het andere kamp, dat van mening was dat als we steden opvatten als enorme entiteiten waar we geen invloed op hebben, dat we dan alleen maar bezig zijn de onvrede van onze medeburgers te herhalen, die niet gaan stemmen, of die denken dat ze niets kunnen doen dat een verande ring brengt. Het is beter naar onszelf te kijken, onze vrienden, hun vrienden, zelfs naar het museum zelf, de mensen die er werken, hun families, omdat als we daar vanuit gaan, dan zijn er sets en groepen van verstandhoudingen, die elkaar weer AD:

ontmoeten, en anderen, en anderen en dit is de manier om de stad te doorden ken. Wat uiteindelijk verband houdt met die existentiële kwestie van het Zijn en de Relatie, die ook een politieke dimensie heeft. Het is om te beginnen een filoso fisch voorstel, maar iets dat we allemaal meemaken en naar handelen, al is het niet altijd prettig. Mijn relatie met mijn buren, zoals ik zei, is niet noodzakelij kerwijs erg goed maar we zijn ons heel bewust van ons effect op hen, en van hun effect op ons. En dat taxiritje in Napels liet op een kleine manier zien, hoe je met een ruimere visie naar steden kunt kijken, wat er gebeurt en hoe ze leven, hoe we ons een weg erdoorheen banen, niet alleen door het stratenplan, maar tussen vrienden, familie, toevallige ontmoetin gen, mensen tegen wie je oploopt. Dit is wat we allemaal doen en dat moeten we niet over het hoofd zien.

op die bitter koude November-dag. Ik had gezien hoe hij in het Poolse rijtuig stapte, maar pas toen we Silezië bereikten, ‘s middags de volgende dag, kwam hij uit de coupé tevoorschijn om in de gang te gaan staan. Hoe dichter we bij onze bestemming kwamen, hoe drukker zijn bewegingen, hoe meer overdreven zijn beleefdheid als hij opzij stapte om andere passagiers langs te laten. Op een klein station trok hij pakketten en dozen door de hoge smalle ramen terwijl de eigenaars ze vanaf het perron naar binnen tilden; hij wipte van de ene groep naar de an dere, om hier een koffer recht te zetten, waardoor een andere door het gangpad tuimelde, allemaal in zijn gretigheid om te helpen. Toen de trein slingerend het station verliet, plofte hij uitgeput van zijn inspanningen neer op het stoeltje naast de deur van mijn coupé, met een zakdoek aan het voorhoofd, happend naar lucht.

AD:

O p deze manier breidt jouw project, jouw oeuvre, zich uit ver buiten de aannames en beperkingen van het gevestigde commerciële kunst-systeem. CH: Als kunstenaars gevraagd wordt waarom ze iets maken geven ze regel matig als antwoord ‘Daar houd ik van’ of ‘Ik heb er zin in om dat te doen’, dat is net zo van deze tijd als de veronderstel ling waarvan ik onlangs zag dat die werd toegeschreven aan Duchamp, dat kunst is ‘wat ik zeg dat kunst is’. En dat hoor je als een vaststaand feit in de hedendaagse kunst - het is natuurlijke totale lulkoek. Je hoort het vaak op kunstacademies, en we beleven de bijna absolute academisering van de kunst, waarin jonge mensen door hun ouders, of de staat worden gesubsi dieerd, door de enorme machinerie van onze huidige maatschappij waarin allerlei aannames, heel uitgesproken opvattingen bestaan over wat kunst is, ideeën waar zij zich aan zullen aanpassen. Als je naar een kunstbeurs gaat dan zie je geen brede waaier aan betekenissen, je ziet een heel beperkt scala aan interpretaties van wat kunst is en doet. Nogmaals ik bedoel dit niet als kritiek, de kritische blik moet deel uitmaken van de context, van de wereld die er vorm aan geeft, maar we moeten het in de gaten houden, omdat het allerlei implicaties kan hebben die niet zo goed aardig zijn.

Zodra hij weer op adem was begon hij te praten: waar ging ik heen? Waarom was ik in Polen, en kende ik Krakau? Hij had een gemiddelde lengte, hij was dun en naderde zijn pensioen. Hij droeg een geruit jasje, een hel mosterdgeel gilet, en op zijn transpirerende voorhoofd leunde een tweed hoedje met een smalle rand. Hij stelde zichzelf voor: hij was een Pool, die in Nottingham werkte als postbode. Hij had Polen verlaten als jonge soldaat in 1939, door het leger meegenomen naar Rusland. Dit was de eerste keer dat hij terugkeerde. Met ieder station, iedere rinkelende bel die passeerde werd hij emotioneler. Eenmaal voorbij Katowice ging de reis langzaam, onderbroken door lange perioden van stilstand wanneer er goederentreinen met olie en kolen passeerden. Maar langzaam kwamen ze dichter bij Krakau. En daarmee nam zijn gespannenheid af - hij leek onzeker bij het steeds opnieuw controleren van zijn portefeuille, zijn paspoort, zijn kaartje, zijn adresboek. We hadden afgesproken elkaar te treffen in de stad voor een kop koffie, hij had het adres van het café dat hij zich herinnerde zorgvuldig opgeschre ven, maar nu was hij stil, zijn gezicht grauw. Lang voordat we aankwamen had hij me bedankt en kwam overeind om in het gangpad te gaan staan met zijn bagage.

J ouw vertoog, jouw manier van denken en praten over kunst, zoals in dit gesprek, is onderdeel van wat je anders maakt. CH: Laatst had ik ergens een tentoon stelling en ze zeiden, zoals altijd, ‘ge nomineerd voor de Turner Prize’, wat onzin is, het deed er niet toe en na vijftig jaar werk is het irrelevant. Maar goed, in die tijd beschreef de pers me als een Europees intellectueel, geringschattend dus, het is wel Engeland, en met die twee woorden heb je een dubbel probleem! Wat een afgrond aan onbegrip schuilt hierin. In mijn overtuiging zijn de dingen waarover we hier hebben gepraat niet allereerst diepe filosofische zaken, maar dingen waar we allemaal over nadenken op de een of andere manier, op het een of andere moment, ook al zullen we ze niet op dezelfde manier uitdrukken.

Het café was in het centrum van de stad. Het was een berucht variété-restaurant geweest voor de bohème in de eerste jaren van de eeuw, en de muren waren bedekt met gedichten en souvenirs, de provocaties van een ander tijdperk. Nu was het een geliefde plek voor familie feestjes na de kerkgang op zondagmor gen, en voor toeristen in het seizoen. Ik was te laat en zag mijn reisgezel pas toen hij opstond en naar me zwaaide. Hij zat er met een extravagant mooie jonge vrouw, hij stelde ons aan elkaar voor, ze was zijn nicht. Er had een eigenaardige transfor matie plaatsgevonden in zijn gedrag, het was alsof hij tot zijn eigen verbazing, een onverwachte rol diende te spelen - hij was de rijke oom geworden. Hij wipte op en neer, wenkte een ober, inspecteerde het gebak, vroeg om een krant, en be dreef zijn vrijgevigheid met omstandige welwillendheid.

EEN PROJECT VOOR ARTFORUM DOOR CRAIGIE HORSFIELD 4 APRIL 1994 Laat in de herfst van 1972 reisde ik van Engeland naar Krakau per schip en trein. Er was maar één andere reiziger uit Dover geweest op de kade in Oostende

Zijn nicht trok zich van zijn vertoning niets aan, ze wachtte op haar vriendje. Levendig en met achteloze zekerheid vertelde ze over dromen, gewichtloos en onecht - haar ambities in de toneelwereld. Op een bepaald moment pauzeerde ze, vol verwachting. Haar oom leek verbaasd door haar afleiding, maar voordat hij iets kon zeggen kwam haar vriendje aan, hij drong zich een weg langs de drukbezette

tafels. We gingen staan en schudden elkaar de hand, een lange jonge man met zwart haar en een snor, Antoni Mroczek, een student aan de kunstacademie, hij boog flauwtjes en draaide zich om de hand van zijn vriendin te kussen. Ik heb haar na die dag nooit meer gezien, ik herinner me haar naam niet meer, maar ik kan me nu nog de buitensporige zwoel heid van haar oogopslag voor de geest halen terwijl ze haar hoofd in zijn richting neeg. Zachtjes pakte hij haar hand en hield die vast, om mij te laten zien dat ze dezelfde ringen droeg van wit metaal een man die een vrouw besteeg, haar be nen om hem heen. Het meisje kwam bijna onverschillig over, misschien dat ze haar vriendjes plezier en zijn stoere manier van doen en branie wel vermakelijk vond. Ik kwam Antoni een paar maanden later tegen op de academie. Ik stelde hem aan een vriend voor, een buitenlandse studente; ze was een spaak gelopen romance ontvlucht en het spook van haar minnaar leek nog op haar schou der te zitten, ze was agressief en bang, angstig in een stad die ze niet begreep. Antoni woonde in de Rreznizastraat bij zijn ouders. Aan het andere eind van de straat stond een slachthuis en niet ver weg een chocoladefabriek, en daar weer achter stroomde de rivier de Vistula. Op roerloze hete zomerdagen hing er een misselijkmakende zoetigheid in de lucht. Antoni’s vader gaf gitaarlessen op de muziekschool en een tijd lang speelden Antoni en ik in een band, op zondagen repeteerden we in de oefenruimtes van de school. Antoni was enig kind en zijn ouders verwenden hem. Naast hun zoon waren ze tenger en broos. Tegenover vreemden waren ze gereserveerd, als er bezoek kwam trokken ze zich terug in de donkere kamers ver van de straat. De eerste winter woonde ik in de Mazowieckastraat. In januari voegde mijn vrouw zich bij me en we deelden een kleine studio boven een bijna vrijstaande fabriek, voorbij een stel nieuwe flatge bouwen; van de oudere gebouwen in het gebied waren alleen de fabriek en het politiepost aan de overkant overgeble ven. Daarachter waren volkstuintjes en woekerde het hoge gras op de braaklan den. Het appartement had een gammel beglaasd balkon, overweldigd door de verknoopte takken van een stokoude blauwe regen. Een paar ruiten waren ka pot en de sneeuw blies dan in vlagen het balkon op en zwiepte onder de deur de kamer in. Wekenlang lagen we tegen el kaar aan, met hoge koorts, te kijken naar de sneeuw die zich als zand verspreidde over de planken vloer, te zwak om de ko len voor de kachels in de hoek de smalle trappen op te zeulen vanaf de binnen plaats. Vrijwel als enige van onze vrien den kwam Antoni op bezoek, klom de trap op met zinken emmers vol kolen. Hij nam ook potten honing mee, de inhoud stijf van de kou, die hij dan opwarmde in jus-pannen zodra de kachels brandden. Een jaar later waren mijn vrouw en ik uit elkaar. Die winter kwam ik Antoni niet tegen; ik woonde in een ander deel van de stad en we hadden elkaar uit het oog verloren. Soms dacht ik dat ik hem zag in een van de dansclubs waar ik werkte en dan deed ik of ik hem niet gezien had: ik voelde me opgelaten over mijn oude leven of misschien wel over het nieuwe. Inmiddels denk ik dat hij daar helemaal niet was. In de buurt van de Rreziniszastraat kwam ik zelden. Antoni was verdwenen, of misschien ik wel. Vijftien jaar later was mijn broer in Londen op zoek naar een kantoorbaan

en reageerde op een advertentie van een groep van grafisch ontwerpers die nog een plek vrij hadden op hun kantoor. Mijn broer is acht jaar jonger dan ik en lijkt vermoedelijk meer op mijn jongere ik dan ik nu. Hoofd van het kantoor was Antoni, hij vroeg of we familie waren. Toeval vereist verklaring, iets van protest tegen de onredelijke wereld. Toch, in Boris Pasternak’s Doctor Zhivago worden de personages op drift gestuurd over een heel werelddeel in de chaos van een burgeroorlog, maar ze ontmoeten en verlaten elkaar weer, met een gruwelijk gebrek aan logica. Ze lijken helemaal het product van de geschiedenis, onderdanen van een onverschillig universum. Heen en weer gesleurd, bij elkaar gesmeten, weer uit elkaar gehaald, zijn ze soms jarenlang maar een paar momenten bij elkaar en toch krijg je het gevoel dat hun ontmoe tingen, hoe treurig en wreed het afscheid dat er op volgt ook is, tegelijkertijd vertel len van de beperkingen en de mogelijk heden van het menselijk bestaan. In de versplinterde en traumatische ruimte tussen deze mensen, in de manier waarop ze naast elkaar staan, is hun wezen en een gemeenschap vastgelegd. Hun relatie staat voor de ontelbare intimiteiten van de massa. Daar doorheen stroomt, ook al hebben ze er geen weet van, de onop houdelijke polsslag van het individu en de geschiedenis. Ook al belde Antoni nooit op, hij vroeg mijn broer wel een paar keer of we elkaar konden zien. Er ging een jaar voorbij voordat ik hun kantoor bezocht. Antoni was getrouwd met de vrouw aan wie ik hem had voorgesteld en was jaren terug met haar naar Engeland gekomen. Ze wa ren nu uit elkaar, ze hadden een zes jaar oude zoon - hij liet me een foto zien, ik herinner me alleen het licht, zoveel licht, maar de figuur is eruit verdwenen. Antoni had een klein appartement en zag zijn zoon in de weekends. Zijn vroegere vrouw was ziek geworden, haar lichaam was in langzaam verval. Ik zag hem daarna af en toe, als ik langs hun kantoor kwam en dan vroeg hij of ik de foto’s wilde afdrukken die ik had gemaakt van onze band. Hoe kan ik zeggen dat hij verloren was? Ik kende hem niet, het was alleen maar het gevoel dat ik kreeg. Als jonge man had hij gedroomd van een plek ergens anders, maar hij was thuis geweest in Krakau - zoals hij daar leefde was hij één met de plek. Hij verafschuwde het maar het stroomde door hem heen. Misschien bestaat er geen thuisland, alleen die alsmaar versnellende verwijdering. Er was weer een jaar voorbij voordat ik mijn broer nog eens bezocht, en alles was veranderd. Antoni’s zakenpartner was plotseling overleden, maar niet voordat hij, verstrikt in een web van frauduleuze zaken en dubieuze schulden, alles had verkocht. Antoni was failliet. Hij werkte in het ene na het andere kantoor; zijn werk was goed en hij werkte snel, hij maakte hetzelfde soort tekeningen als toen, toen ik hem leerde kennen. Ik herkende ze als de karikaturen van wat hij als jonge man had gedacht van hoe het Westen was. De misverstanden die ze bevatten waren deel geworden van hun aantrekkelijke nieuwigheid. Antoni leek vrij onschuldig, zo onschuldig als het meisje in het café al die jaren ervoor. (Sommige mense lijke wezen blijven zo hun hele leven lang, terwijl de rest van ons vol afgrijzen toekijkt.) Hij was weer vrijwel uit zicht verdwenen. De laatste keer dat ik hem tegenkwam klonken zijn verzoek voor de afdrukken van de foto’s behoedzamer, ik

maakte er grapjes over, zoals gebruikelijk, en beloofde iets, zoals gebruikelijk. Hij geloofde me niet, hij verweet me niets, hij maakte een grap over iets anders. Ik vroeg hem wat er geworden was van het meisje in het café, en hij vertelde me dat hij haar het jaar ervoor gezien had toen hij zijn ouders in Krakau bezocht. Met plotselinge bitterheid vertelde hij me dat ze werkte als hoer in de Holiday Inn. Afgelopen winter is hij overleden, 39 oud. Het was 21 jaar geleden na onze eerste ontmoeting. Hij had geen adem meer over, geen puf, niets meer, alleen verwarring. Het maakt niet uit dat de verandering om ons heen, de uitzinnige ruis van media en commercie, de mechanismes van het maatschappelijk leven, zo snel en esca lerend lijken - verandering gaat traag als het aankomt op hoe we ten opzichte van elkaar staan, die gedeelde plek tussen ons in. En toch, die verschuivingen over spoelen de wereld in reusachtig en onder aards tumult. Er hebben zoveel verschui vingen plaats gevonden, kleine en grote aanpassingen, dat de wereld gekanteld is in een nieuwe baan, een duizelingwek kende slippende beweging, glibberend en glijdend, een millennium-kermis. Door toeval of opzet leven we in een tijd waar in alles van gedaante moet veranderen, waarin de mythes van vooruitgang en een utopische eindtoestand geen leven meer in stand houden, en waarin het heden de bewijzen begint te tonen van hun falen. Zekerheden vallen uiteen, de ideologische en religieuze orthodoxieën zijn vernietigd of in wanorde. In relatie tot dit heden beschouwd, lijkt de kunst te verkeren in een verzwakte toestand van kwade trouw, afgesneden van een gedeeld leven. Ze is verdwaald in betekenisloos formalisme, weer een afscheiding in de enorme catalogus van de 20e eeuw. Hoewel het heet dat de geschiedenis ten einde loopt, is het niet de geschiedenis zelf, maar een idee van geschiedenis dat eindigt; geschiedenis als een uitdrukking van het heden, als boekstaving van wat we belichamen, heeft geen einde en geen begin. En ook al verkeert het land waarin we wonen in verwarring, twijfel en duisternis, toch hebben we de verbazende mogelijkheid om de wereld te ontroeren en te raken in de wereld een manier van denken en handelen vorm te geven die rekenschap aflegt van deze plek. Kunst, wat het verder ook mag zijn, kan aandacht scherpen voor een werkelijke in plaats van een gefantaseerde ruimte, voor een echte in plaats van een gemythologi seerde tijd van handel en verzinsels, die de dood ontkent en verspreidt over het heden. Om vervreemding te overwinnen is het nodig een identiteit te ontwikkelen, niet in relatie met de een of andere mythe van gemeenschap uit het verleden, maar met wat deze ruimte en tijd specifiek maakt, zo, dat het gewicht, de substantie, de textuur van de fysieke wereld herken baar is in het heden. Kunst is in staat te gelijkertijd de fysieke wereld en de wereld van de geest te doen oplichten - omdat er geen (echte) scheiding is. Een foto kan iets over de wereld vertellen op zo’n manier dat de fysieke plek die hij toont verantwoord is door het fysieke feit van zijn bestaan. Hij kan bestaan in dit heden terwijl het van een ander heden vertelt, zo dat alle tijd kan worden opgevat als gelijktijdig. De foto raakt in ontbinding door licht, zoals de wereld tot ontbinding overgaat, zoals de wereld in ons denken bederft en weer geboren wordt.

Misschien zouden we een reis kunnen maken om zo’n beeld te gaan zien op de enige plek waar het bestaat, in plaats van de tienduizend reproducties te bekijken, alsof dat een ontsnapping zou bieden aan de beperkingen van het leven. In een der gelijke foto zouden we elkaar herkennen, in elkaars aanwezigheid samen zijn, in de erkenning van onze gedeelde beproeving. Dergelijke kunst zou kunnen verhalen over de kwetsbare gemeenschappelijke ruimte, door compassie en aandacht. Die beweging van zichzelf weg, naar de plek waar we samen weerstand kunnen bieden aan de dood - daarin ligt het spoor van een moreel universum. Een universum waarin kunst niet verwondend, maar helend kan zijn, geen leverancier van valse hoop en wondermiddelen opge kookt uit algemeenheden, maar een spreken over deze specifieke, afgeba kende plek, dit moment, dit heden terwijl de wereld kantelt. Ik reis nog steeds van Engeland naar Oostende. Ook als het koud is en de regen over het dek zwiept, ben ik niet de enige die het land ziet wegglijden en kijkt naar het aanzwellen van de zee in het Kanaal, de grijze golven van de millennia, het land en de mensen.

CRAIGIE HORSFIELD: NIEUW WERK EN SLOW TIME MARSHA PLOTNITSKY NAMENS THE MERCHANT HOUSE AUGUSTUS 2016 Men zou, niet alleen de representatie van de dingen moeten omvormen tot een nauwkeuriger visie, maar een interventie plegen op de structuur zelf van de verschijningen, om op een andere manier de verschijning te bewerkstelligen. —Jean-François Chevrier, ‘Les aventures de la forme tableau dans l’histoire de la photographie,’ in Photo-Kunst, 1989-1990 Met een reeks eerdere en nieuwe meesterwerken doorkruist ‘Nieuw Werk en Slow Time’ het fotografische oeu vre van Craigie Horsfield (Cambridge, 1949): kunst als een gedeelde ervaring die geworteld is in zijn opvatting van ‘langzame tijd’ - en die we ons moeten voorstellen als aandacht voor en expansie van een gewoon heden waar het verle den als een dimensie deel van uitmaakt, een diep heden. De structuur van deze tentoonstelling en de catalogus is stap voor stap tot stand gekomen gedurende ontmoetingen in Londen in het afgelopen jaar. De logica ervan moest overeen stemmen met Horsfield’s verstrekkende artistieke toewijding. Zijn uitgangspunten werden voor het eerst openbaar gemaakt in de verbazingwekkend groot formaat foto’s, die verschenen in 1988. Ik was in de zeldzame gelegenheid ze te zien en de kunstenaar kort daarna te ontmoeten, en, het lijkt erop dat toen niet alleen mijn belangstelling voor zijn unieke werkwijze, maar meer algemeen, voor onderzoek naar de problematiek die ermee werd opgeroepen, en daarmee in verzamelen en tentoonstellen, is begonnen en die zich nu voortzet langs de lijnen van die problematiek. Met zijn werk gedurende 45 jaar in het veld van sociale projecten met heden daagse kunst heeft Horsfield belang wekkende denkwijzen ontwikkeld over gemeenschap en individu. Fotografie, film, geluid, tekenkunst, performance,

installaties en andere media worden gebruikt als instrument om ‘relatie’, ‘langzame tijd’, het ‘heden’, ‘aandacht’, en ‘bewustzijn’ te doordenken.1 ‘Relatie’, het denkbeeld dat centraal staat in zijn levenswerk, stelt ons ‘zijn’ voor als iets dat wordt opgewekt ‘tussen’ indivi duen - simpel gezegd: we geven elkaar het zijn - en dat ‘zijn’ is een gebeurtenis, het vindt plaats, in iedere confrontatie, iedere ontmoeting, ieder gesprek. In dit veld, volgens Horsfield, waar een ver standhouding overeenkomt met ‘telling‚’ een woord dat in het Engels de dubbele betekenis van vertellen en verraden heeft, vindt de kunst haar werking. De tentoonstelling in The Merchant House richt zich op het voortgaande onderzoek naar fotografie en omvat grote zwart-wit foto’s uit de reeks die regel matig te zien is in musea over de hele wereld en in Nederland (Het Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, 1992 en het Van Abbe Museum, Eindhoven in 2002); de zogenaamde Irresponsible Drawings, zijn anders, maar niettemin op een fotografi sche manier tot stand gekomen - dat wil zeggen door het lichtspoor van voorwer pen, zoals bloemen, voedsel of bekers; en toont nieuwe werken die gebruik ma ken van door Horsfield zelf ontwikkelde digitale druktechnieken en die hij aan wendde voor een uiterst intense en crea tieve aandacht voor de natuur, de wereld der verschijnselen en voor anderen door middel van portretten die tot stand kwamen als diepgaande gesprekken. Alle vorige onderdelen van het program ma van The Merchant House enten zich op een relatie met de ruimte om kunst meer te laten spreken voor een algemeen publiek en verzamelaars. De visie van Horsfield is een tastbaar en diepgaand proces in wording, dat met ieder werk een nieuwe stap zet, of het nu in het groot is (zijn stadsscènes zoals Plaça de Toros La Monumental, Gran via de les Corts Catalanes, Barcelona, februari 1996) of in betrekkelijk klein werk (een portret of een paar uitgedroogde moril les) en vandaar dat zijn tentoonstelling kan worden gezien als een installatie-inwording die zich nog verder zou kunnen voortzetten. Door het perspectief van verandering en het vertraagde proces van weerklank kan er een weldadige rijkdom aan intimiteit met de kunst tot stand komen die uitnodigt tot een andere manier te communiceren. Het oeuvre van Horsfield, dat ontegen zeglijk 21e-eeuws is, was te zien in veel grote tentoonstellingen en het onderwerp van uitgebreide studies, die ingingen op de historische en schilder kunstige verwijzingen en de onmid dellijke actualiteit ervan. De entourage van een Amsterdams grachtenpand, een hedendaagse galerie-ruimte en een monument dat vol toespelingen zit op de portretkunst en de stillevens uit de Nederlandse Gouden Eeuw, schept een natuurlijke veelzeggende ontmoeting met de kunstgeschiedenis. Zonder dat het nodig is te periodiseren wordt zo expliciet hoe anders deze kunstenaar de eenheid van idee en materialiteit ziet. Het verlangen, volgens Jean-François Chevrier’s definitie van het schilderij, om ‘op andere wijze de verschijning te pro duceren’, en daarmee afstand te nemen van de conceptualistische verwijzing, symbolisme en betekenis-verlening. Een installatie in staat van verandering in een intieme openbare opstelling met histori sche wortels en egalitaire doelstellingen, zoals The Merchant House, zou daarom

een zoektocht kunnen worden naar de gunstigste voorwaarden waaronder deze complexe kunst te ervaren valt. Behalve de precisie van het vakman schap, zijn er de woorden van Horsfield (‘telling’) die oproepen tot grondig onder zoek. Zijn teksten en interviews hebben een rijke inhoud en getuigen van een altijd scherp observerende geest en, zo als te verwachten valt, een hoogwaardige aandacht. Twee van die teksten staan zij aan zij in deze catalogus: Horsfield’s pro ject voor Artforum in 1994 komt in een nieuw licht te staan door deze tentoon stelling en wordt van een nieuwe context voorzien door een nieuw vraaggesprek met kunstcriticus Adrian Dannatt, een van de eersten die schreef over zijn radicale fotografie. Toevallige en opzette lijke verbanden tussen beide teksten zijn veelbetekenend en niet te missen.

en het fysieke oppervlak van de werken, door de geografie van de sociale reikwijdte en de alomvattende vorm die de kunstenaar op zijn unieke manier geeft aan universele onderwerpen. Op dezelfde manier krijgen we oog voor de indrukwekkende versmelting van foto grafische mogelijkheden - een versluierd gebied, verleidelijk en gevaarlijk, in het tijdperk van het digitale selfie en de instant uitwisseling van beelden - binnen de contouren van deze ruimte, kunnen hun materiele en conceptuele aspecten worden gezien - en zo ziet Horsfield ze - als een opgaan in bredere vragen naar waarneming en representatie.

Het komt de tentoonstelling ten goede om ook Horsfield’s onderschriften te presenteren als belangrijke elementen in het weefsel van zijn teksten (zijn kunst is nooit ‘Zonder titel’). De onderschriften zijn niet zozeer titels, maar eerder korte documenten, die systematisch twee data vastleggen (die van de oorsprong van het beeld in een gesprek en die van de latere realisatie - als plotselinge stilte - in een medium naar keuze); de naam van de deelnemer (of de naam van het object in recent werk), opgesomd naast die van de kunstenaar, leggen die een verbinding tussenbeide; en geven een geografi sche aanduiding, een straatnaam en een stad, raadselachtig buitenlands tenzij het Londen is. In dit opzicht specifiek en feitelijk, zijn de onderschriften korte verslagen van dat spoor, van het ontstaan van het beeld, en wij als toeschouwers kunnen er plezier van hebben door het in ons eigen perspectief te plaatsen. In zijn project voor Artforum 1994 scherp maar feitelijk - werkt Horsfield zich door de lagen van zijn herinnering aan een toevallige ontmoeting in de trein naar Krakau in 1972 om zijn belangrijke noties van ‘langzame tijd’ en ‘relatie’ te staven. In het vraaggesprek volgt hij een vergelijkbaar pad en in zijn antwoor den op Dannatt’s verbijsterde vragen over vorm en compositie, verschijnen Shakespeare, Velasquez en Goya op het zelfde speelveld - als onderwerpen van zijn iconische vierkante foto’s - met de gewone inwoners van Krakau, Barcelona, Madrid, Rotterdam en Napels. Door mid del van poëtische nuances baseren de teksten Horsfield’s artistieke positie op de particuliere en meest innerlijke erva ring, om te beginnen op de overwegingen achter de ontmoetingen die leidden tot de foto’s, maar ze zijn - met kracht, bijna strijdbaar - niet bedoeld om het beeld te completeren. Dit punt wordt nog eens benadrukt wanneer Horsfield erover be gint dat hij muziek schrijft (hij werkte ook als DJ tijdens zijn verblijf in Krakau): net als een muziek-partituur moet beeldende kunst vrij gemaakt worden van haar oorsprong in de geest van de auteur en van heersende concepten, zodat zich een grote mate van intimiteit en diepe weer klank bij de toeschouwer kan ontplooien, net als bij iemand die muziek uitvoert. Een aandachtige blik naar en van de toeschouwer - een liefdevolle blik - zou het hart van die methode moeten zijn. Op die manier, met de zich uitbrei dende tentoonstelling, de werken, de onderschriften en de teksten die samen Horsfield’s vooruitziende poëtische ruimte vormen, wordt onze fascinatie aangemoedigd door de rijke thematiek
