PRINCIPAL'S LETTER Winter 2016 Dear Alumnae, Parents and Friends, I am happy to greet you again during another exciting year at The Mary Louis Academy. I am pleased to report that contributions to TMLA during the past academic year totaled almost $900,000. We are so very grateful for your continued support. In this publication you will see a wide range of achievements by our students and alumnae. TMLA remains committed to our proud legacy of excellence in education that nurtures the whole woman by integrating faith and life. We are proud that because of the great generosity of our alumnae and their families, we offer the most scholarship money for girls of any high school in New York City–with scholarships valued at over $2.3 million awarded each year. Your generosity during the 2014-2015 academic year also made possible a whole host of advancements at TMLA! This September saw the launch of our new three-year Science Research program as well as our new Foreign Exchange program with a school in Sicily. Our iPad program continues with all incoming freshwomen provided with iPads for school use. During the past summer, there were also major improvements on our campus. These included construction of three new gardens, as well as installation of new flooring throughout the Main, Wing and Convent buildings. In addition the Library has been air conditioned; a second 3-D printer has been added to our Engineering Lab for use in making prosthetic hands for children. We also purchased our own TMLA buses to transport students to school events. We have also made great strides in our Physical Education and Athletic Departments with the addition of full-time Sports Medicine staff on campus. A very generous donation of collegiate-level equipment from St. Joseph’s College allowed us to expand and re-outfit our student fitness center. Thank you for all that you do for The Mary Louis Academy. As you read this publication you will see that we are thriving because of your unfailing generosity and support. Each gift makes a tremendous and immediate difference in the lives of the young women at TMLA today. Your contributions enable TMLA to continue to develop leaders who will change the world for the better! Thank you very much for all of your prayers and support. May God bless you and your family. Sincerely,

S. Kathleen McKinney CSJ, Ed.D. Principal

VALEDICTORIAN 'S ADDRESS

Good morning Sister Kathleen McKinney, Sister Filippa Luciano, Mrs. Ann Cordes, Ms. Jeanne Altenau, Ms. Loriann Murphy, Ms. Jennifer Moore, Ms. Maureen Koetz, Faculty, Families, Friends and members of the class of 2015. After four long challenging years, this moment has finally come. We’ve been looking forward to it since freshman year, yet now that it is upon us, it is bittersweet. In May, we had a Commissioning Service for our Sophomore Class, to “send them off ” to begin their Christian service hours. During this service, students were anointed with Holy Oil by our administrators to signify the work that our hands can do in serving others.

FUTURE PLANS The Office of Religious Activities and the members of the Department of Religious Studies have worked on re-constructing our annual Formation Program here at TMLA. Beginning with the 2015-2016 academic year, each grade will now have their Retreat Day as a whole class at the Motherhouse in Brentwood; the beautiful 300 acre campus in Brentwood was personally selected, surveyed and developed by Mother Mary Louis herself in 1903. With each of the four designated days, faculty will have the opportunity to build deeper spiritual relationships with their students while serving as facilitators on the retreats. In addition, we will be training students to be peer leaders, who will have the opportunity to lead small groups and activities, as well as give witness talks of their own. Each year will have their own theme that centers around the various strengths and challenges that pertain to that particular year. This academic year we are combining our Spirit Week and Mission On April 1st, we had a Holy Week Prayer Service for our students, with the theme in the form of a question, “What is Your Cross?” During this prayer service, students listened to various Bible passages and listened to student reflections on the crosses they have carried. Then they were asked to complete the nearly impossible task of tying a small ribbon around their own pinky, which they quickly learned could only be completed if they asked for help from their neighbor. Through this activity, students learned that they are not alone when carrying their cross, just as Jesus was not alone. Like Saint Veronica who wiped the face of Christ on his journey up to Calvary, we too have the support and

Week activities and working closely with Student Council to further the relationship between school mission and school pride. This week will be filled with fun and informative activities that focus on the history of the Sisters of St. Joseph, and the love and passion that the TMLA community feels for our academy. We also have a new student leadership group, namely, a Liturgical Committee. This club will meet regularly and will be comprised of students who would like to have a more active role in Religious Activities. Some of these roles will include Ministers of Holy

THANK YOU TO OUR SUSTAINER DONORS 2014-2015 Have you ever not made a gift to TMLA because you felt it would be “too small” to make a difference? Have you ever wanted to make a larger gift but it’s just too much to do at one time? Have you ever intended to make your gift to TMLA but simply forgot to send it in? You might be interested in our Sustainer Donor program. When you become a Sustainer Donor you provide TMLA with your credit or debit card information and authorize us to deduct an amount of your choosing each month. In this way some alumnae have found that by having $10 a month automatically deducted turned into a yearly gift of $120. Having $100 a month deducated turns into a yearly gift of $1,200…13% of a full year’s tuition! This unique form of generosity also helps to provide TMLA with a continual stream of revenue we can rely on when planning and implementing new advancements and programs! T. Elaine Adamson 54

I chose to become a Sustainer Donor because as a relatively young professional I haven't yet made the big bucks to donate enough for my own wing! But in all seriousness, TMLA has been a constant in my life for over 15 years and I know it always will be. A small monthly donation is just a tiny illustration of my gratitude for everything Mary Louis has already given to me. -Kathleen Battiato Sama 04

THANK YOU TO OUR SISTERS The touch of their religious zeal, their devotion to Catholic education, their splendid character and their ladylike culture is to be found in many aspects of our schools. They take up their duties with the flush of youth, they hold to them to the very end of their lives. It is a service of the heart that cannot be measured in terms of money. Out in the vastness of secular life they would command much attention and high salaries. It is our striking privilege that they have pledged themselves to consecrated lives and pass long years in the various pursuits of education, charity and the empowerment of young women for which we reap such fame.

Thank you to the following Sisters of St. Joseph, who through their contributed service enabled TMLA to defray the cost of over $1,000,000 in salaries and benefits during the 2014-2015 academic year.

Made of solid oak and brass, the “Building for the Future” has bricks and windows of different shapes and sizes to engrave and allows benefactors of TMLA the chance to personalize and choose your level of giving. This structure represents the tributes and memorials that alumnae, parents and friends choose to make. REGIONAL RECEPTIONS

Over the last several years TMLA alumnae have hosted regional receptions in Florida, New York City, New Jersey, California, Connecticut, the DC Capital District, Maryland, Long Island, Westchester and the Albany Capital Region. These receptions serve to help TMLA alumnae “reconnect” with Mary Louis. These events have proved to be a wonderful way for TMLA alumnae who live in the same area to meet each other, connect with fellow Mary Louis women and also learn about what’s happening at TMLA today. We believe the Mary Louis community extends far beyond the geographic boundaries of our hilltop. No matter where you live you remain a member of the TMLA family. We are all united by memories, traditions and a strong belief in the education of women of vision and dignity. On December 9th, 2014 Miriam Smith Vagt 46 hosted a lovely reception at her home in Scarsdale, NY. Over 25 TMLA alumnae gathered to reminisce and reconnect with TMLA. On April 30th, 2015 Carolyn Paradise Wayrynen, M.D. 62 generously hosted a reception for over 40 TMLA alumnae at The Harvard Club in NYC. This was a truly wonderful evening during which TMLA women connected, networked and received an update from Sister Kathleen on TMLA today. If you would be interested in hosting a regional reception near your home please contact the Office of Academy Advancement at 718.267.2120 x286 or Advancement@tmla.org

For over 33 years Sister Filippa Luciano has been a force of nature at and for The Mary Louis Academy. From her earliest days as a "Mariel-ite" it was clear that “Flip” Luciano not only would leave her mark on TMLA, but that TMLA would do the same for her. 49

PROFILES IN LEADERSHIP KATHERINE CHAN - CLASS OF 2004 The confidence Mary Louis instilled in me gave me the courage to reach further than anyone had ever told me possible. The world of finance is still lacking in women and it is a disappointment to see that many of the women who choose to leave the industry do so because of a cultural gap that can be bridged by the assertiveness that single-sex education instilled in me. Katherine is a Partner and Senior Analyst at Anandar Capital Management, a hedge fund, started by Katherine and her friend Min Htoo, where they invest across the corporate capital structure in both equity and debt. Daily, Katherine explores different companies in a variety of industries while simultaneously learning by leading. Katherine also happily mentors students at TMLA today, teaching them the skills that have brought her success in her career. After graduation from TMLA Katherine went on to Harvard University on a full scholarship, graduating with an A.B. in Linguistics and Mind, Brain, Behavior with a secondary field in Human Evolutionary Biology. During her time at Harvard Katherine served as President of the Harvard Independent, the university’s weekly student newspaper. Her 2008 graduation left her on the footsteps of the world just as the financial crisis reached its worst. The front-row education she received during her internship the summer before

After a year at Credit Suisse, she joined HG Vora Capital. This company was then a start-up distressed credit hedge fund; Katherine served as the fund’s third investment analyst. In 2013 she took a position as a Senior Analyst with Magnetar Capital before branching out to start her own hedge fund in 2014. In love with her New York roots, Katherine returned from Cambridge after college and currently resides in the West Village. In her off hours, she blessedly continues to putz around the city with her best friends from TMLA: Katya Makovik 04, Angelica Silva 04, and Sameeah Muhammad 04. She also advocates for an increase in the number of women in her field through her involvement as co-chair of the Next Generation Committee of 100 Women in Hedge Funds as well as her active mentoring of current TMLA students interested in pursuing careers in the financial sector.

PROFILES IN LEADERSHIP KENYA VELEZ - CLASS OF 2013 Kenya Velez, TMLA Class of 2013, is currently an undergraduate attending Pace University where she is pursuing a degree in Biochemistry with intentions of attending medical school. At the age of only 20 years old Kenya has already conducted research at two prestigious institutions, The State University of New York College of Optometry and Columbia University. Kenya is currently a Biomedical Research Intern at Columbia University doing research in synthetic biology. Kenya also conducts research at her university doing studies on antimicrobial properties. Kenya is proud to be a first generation college student who has many goals to accomplish. Working in the healthcare industry has always been her dream. Finding new medication, new cures, and researching disease prevention are what excites her the most about the healthcare industry. In her spare time Kenya enjoys being surrounded by different cultures, learning new things and taking adventures to new places. When asked about her future goals Kenya said simply “My goals are to be successful and obtain every opportunity that life has.” …truly the mantra of a TMLA Woman!

TMLA has given me the confidence as a woman to pursue a career in the medical field. It was where I met inspiring science teachers who pushed me to reach my full potential and to aspire to my dreams. TMLA prepared me both academically and professionally for my college years and I am so grateful for all that I continue to receive from The Mary Louis Academy.

PROFILES IN LEADERSHIP PAULA TIERNEY FLORENTINO - CLASS OF JUNE 1947 Paula Tierney Florentino 47 lived a life that truly personified TMLA’s mission of leadership through unity, reconciliation and inclusive love. Born in 1929 in Richmond Hill Paula was raised in Floral Park and graduated from Our Lady of Victory School there. At TMLA Paula was involved in many activities including the Glee Club, on the staff of Mariel and as both President of her Freshman class and Secretary of her Junior class. Where Paula truly found her passion was as President of Genesians, a love of theater and the arts stayed with Paula for the rest of her life. Upon graduation from TMLA in 1947, Paula earned her BS in Education from The College of St. Elizabeth in New Jersey and then her Master’s Degree in Education from the State University of New York at New Paltz. In 1953 Paula married the love of her life, Robert Florentino. Paula and Bob made their home and raised their family in Port Washington, NY, where they began their long history of visionary involvement in a wide range of community organizations, which are far too numerous to mention. Focusing primarily on work in which they could have a direct impact on the people they helped, Paula was especially proud of their involvement with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, which provides direct assistance to the poor, and in Full Circle Associates, which involved working on weekends with residents in Spanish Harlem to renovate run-down tenement buildings to ultimately be owned by those residents. Paula also opened her home to many in need; through the STEP program of the New York Urban League. Paula & Bob housed a young black woman from Jackson Mississippi who was therefore able to escape the oppression and segregation of the Deep South in the 1960’s. This young woman was therefore able to attend high school in Port Washington for her junior and senior years and successfully graduate. As her children were growing up, Paula furthered her studies at the Bank Street College of Education where she focused on early childhood education. After working in a variety of pre-school settings, she focused on early intervention, working one-on-one with young, low-income mothers and their babies.

53

In recognition of their enormous dedication to others, Paula and Bob together were named Citizens of the Year in Port Washington in 1989. In 1992 Paula and Bob retired to Newport, RI subsequently relocating to Jamestown, RI in 2003. In Rhode Island, Paula continued her civic involvement and was a particularly active steward at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Newport. A long time practitioner of yoga, she taught for several years at Innerlight Center for Yoga and Meditation and at the John Clarke Retirement Center, where she helped to teach both the physical and spiritual benefits of yoga to senior citizens. Paula continued her yoga practice until her death. In Jamestown, she served on the boards of the Friends of the Jamestown Library and The Beavertail Lighthouse Museum Association. Paula passed away peacefully on July 31, 2013 at home with her family after living gracefully with cancer for two years. At her request Paula’s body was donated to Brown University School of Medicine in hopes that scientific examination of her remains may help to treat other cancer patients and further the search for a cure. In addition to her husband Bob, Paula is survived by her four children Katherine, Jane, Anthony and Sally; 13 grandchildren; and her sister Rita Tierney 44. Paula’s devotion to them, and theirs to her, is unending.

Congratulations on a life well lived Paula, we are so happy to commend you and Bob for all of the wonderful work you did to help those in need. Your life truly exemplified the Sisters of St. Joseph’s call to “love of the dear neighbor without distinction”, we are so very proud of “our girl”!

Selection for inclusion in this program, entitled “Covering Ireland”, involved an interview process that reflected upon the applicant’s grades and published works as well as their individual interview and people skills. The program is run in collaboration with Dublin Institute of Technology and entails covering news stories for an area of Dublin known as “the Liberties”. The specific beat assigned to Tarrah consisted of a store called Noels. This store was owned by a man named Noel and managed by his daughter Lauren. Lauren and Tarrah discussed the local crime rates and what it is like to be an entrepreneur in Dublin. Lauren was proud to illustrate how the local community in Dublin came together to help one another. Throughout the term abroad Tarrah and her fellow students also had the opportunity to visit prestigious news outlets in

PROFILES IN LEADERSHIP JOAN MCENTEE - CLASS OF 1965 Joan McEntee, TMLA Class of 1965 has spent her years since graduation in true Mary Louis style…as a trailblazer and pioneer in the highest levels of the federal government. Joan is currently the Chairman and CEO of Middle Kingdom Business Consultants LLC, (MKBC). MKBC concentrates on strategic consulting for a number of multinational firms with business activities in China. MKBC has offices in Washington, DC and Beijing, China, where her company leverages governmental relationships in both countries on behalf of company clients. Joan has visited China over 90 times and serves as an official economic advisor to several Chinese cities and Provinces. Among her Chinese advisory roles have been the Provinces of Yunnan and Jiangsu, as well as cities such as Kunming and Xian. Joan hails from Immaculate Conception parish in Jamaica Estates. During her years at TMLA Joan excelled academically yet still found time for involvement with the Student Service League, Sodality, Debate Club, Math Club, Library Club, Red Cross, Crusader staff, the Basketball team, Bowling team, as a Cheerleader, President of the History Club and Class President for both her sophomore and junior years. Upon graduation from TMLA Joan went on to attend Marymount College for undergrad and earned her Masters in Government & Public Administration from The American University and her Juris Doctorate from Washington College of Law at The American University. Finding herself in the nation’s capital at the completion of her academic studies Joan was able to successfully launch a career in the federal government. Joan was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff to the Vice-President of the United States, George H.W. Bush and was then appointed Staff Director and Chief Counsel of the U.S. Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs…in this position Joan blazed a path for women as the first female U.S. Senate Staff Director in history. As an example of the “masculine” mindset in government at the time, Joan gave birth to her son on a Sunday during the congressional Memorial Day recess and had to be back at work by that Friday as there was no job protection for women on maternity leave at that time. In 1988 Joan made her transition from the White House and Capitol Hill to the Department of Commerce serving for six years in a number of senior international trade positions in the U.S. government, covering communication, transportation, aviation, defense and environmental

“ TMLA encouraged me to never be afraid to challenge myself, academically and professionally…especially in ‘non-traditional’ occupations. Mary Louis taught me to question authority when appropriate and to appreciate the strength of women – as sisters, supporters, role models and superb friends. TMLA helped me to develop skills that I relied upon in my political, legal, business and family roles. At Mary Louis every leader, from the Captain of the Basketball Team to the School President to the Presidents of the varied clubs, were all women so it never occurred to me later in life that a woman couldn’t be anything at all that she might want to be. “

PROFILES IN LEADERSHIP MELISSA MONSALVE - CLASS OF 2010 In her first rotation, Melissa worked as a point of contact for USGS involvement in the Urban Waters Federal Partnership, which revitalizes waterways in populated communities for economic, social and environmental benefits. She has also helped to form a federal committee for the New York City portion of the Urban Waters project. Melissa’s second 6-month rotation was with the USGS Science and Decisions Center (SDC). The SDC is housed within the agency's Energy, Minerals, and Environmental Health mission area. There Melissa worked with the SILUS (Spatial Melissa Monsalve, TMLA Class of 2010, has

is happy to say that USGS is excited to have younger individuals at work to help inspire future generations to get involved in science-related careers.

Melissa’s current rotation is with the agency's International Programs office. She is currently working on two projects. The first project is

the creation of a social network between government agencies, academic institutions, and NGO's in the Mekong River Delta (in Vietnam; however, the Mekong river runs through 4 other countries in the region). The purpose of social network is to help facilitate science data sharing among entities working in the region and potentially alleviate the silos of data sharing across country boundaries, since these countries all have very different political orientations that cloud the science data sharing paths. The second project Melissa is involved with pertains to environmental health issues, specifically air quality concerns, in emerging megacities in the African continent. This project is currently in the process of refinement as discussions continue with partnering groups to see where USGS science can come in to play. Melissa feels very fortunate to have attended both a high school and a college that fostered a well rounded education, empowerment and dedication to service. When asked about the impact TMLA has made on her life Melissa said “As a woman in today’s society, it is difficult to find enclaves in which we are not being put down or judged on our physicality instead of being valued for our intelligence or personalities. However, TMLA was a positive space that pushed me and my peers for high goals: to dare to be powerful and intelligent women, to support each other, and to remember to give back. Connecticut College had similar ideals.” In both TMLA and Connecticut College, Melissa found an incredible wealth of support from peers and mentors; receiving a liberal arts training that is often taken for granted. Melissa feels that being pushed to constantly grow mentally has allowed her to take on her current position with The US Geological Survey with more excitement than fear. After she completes her assignment with USGS, Melissa intends to apply for a Fulbright fellowship to document issues of sustainability in South America. She also plans to attend graduate school to focus on urban studies. Ultimately, Melissa aspires to a career in which she will help to create and maintain more sustainable, resilient, and equitable cities globally. TMLA women truly change the world!

TMLA is one of the most positive and supportive communities I’ve ever been a member of. 58

PROFILES IN LEADERSHIP MARILYN HANOLD NEILSON - CLASS OF JUNE 1953 Marilyn Hanold Neilson, TMLA Class of 1953, a star of stage and screen during Hollywood’s “Golden Age,” has led a storied and exciting life since her graduation from The Mary Louis Academy! As a student at TMLA, Marilyn was a member of the Sodality, the Student Service League, President of her Freshman Class and, of course, President of Genesians. After graduation from TMLA, Marilyn went to The Wood School (today’s Wood Tobe-Coburn School) and earned her certification as a Legal Secretary. After working for a short time for a patent attorney in Manhattan, then briefly as a photographer's model, Marilyn was asked by famed director and producer George White to be the narrator for his new show in Las Vegas. Many stars were booked as part of this review and Marilyn found it stimulating to be a teenager experiencing the amazing new world of Las Vegas in its heyday in those years. She was thrilled to find herself as a headliner at only 19 years of age! From Vegas, the show then went to the famed "Ciro's" nightclub in Hollywood and did very well until George White lost all the money for the performers’ salaries and travel return. Although they were stranded in Hollywood, this misfortune turned out to be Marilyn’s stepping stone into the world of movies and television. In Hollywood, Marilyn landed a job at the famed "Moulin Rouge" nightclub on Hollywood Boulevard. She was soon featured there. At the “Moulin Rouge” Marilyn performed alongside such luminaries as Johnny Ray, Rock Hudson, Sammy Davis Jr., Liberace, Helen Traubel, Red Skelton, and Frank Sinatra! It was a wonderful era of glamour and excitement. After performances at the nightclub, the movie "Garment Jungle" was an important milestone. The casting for the movie started with three girls; eventually two were cut; Marilyn remained; and so her acting career was launched! Marilyn soon won a role in the movie "The Birds and the Bees" with George Gobel and Mitzi Gaynor. Marilyn’s next movie role was in "Solid Gold Cadillac," a Paramount Studios production. As a young person, Marilyn found it very thrilling to walk and work in Hollywood alongside actors who were famous celebrities. Next George Gobel asked Marilyn to be his sidekick in his show at the Riviera in Las Vegas. She was known as "Charlie," his Guitar-CarrierOuter. Johnny Mann was also part of their "three musketeers" group.

TMLA ABROAD

Since 2011 TMLA’s Italian classes, under the guidance of instructor Mr. Nicholas Maurantonio, have been video conferencing with students from the Istituto Secondaria Superiore, Gaetano Curcio in Ispica, Sicily. Mr. Maurantonio coordinates these conferences with the Istituto’s English teacher Mrs. Mary Puccia, who as luck would have it is the aunt of Karra Puccia, TMLA Class of 2013. In Ispica, Sicily besides teaching English, Mrs. Puccia is also responsible for a National High School Model United Nations Program in which she and her students travel to the United Nations in NYC for a yearly Conference held in March. For each of the past 4 years, as part of their UN visit, the Italian students and their chaperones have visited TMLA. The Italian students and their TMLA counterparts have always asked when TMLA would visit Ispica. This academic year, The Mary Louis Academy sponsored a Student

Nine young women from TMLA (3 Sophomores, 4 Juniors, and 2 Seniors) and faculty chaperones flew to Ispica, Sicily for an eight day stay with their previously arranged Italian host families. The TMLA student’s family are reciprocating by hosting the daughter of the Italian host family for a week in March of 2016. While in Sicily TMLA’s young women attended classes with Italian students and also took sightseeing trips to: the Greek ruins in Siracusa, the Duomo and restored town of Noto, the Valley of Temples in Agrigento, the storybook city of Modica, and also visited Taormina and Mount Etna. During the fall of 2015 partnered students (the Italian host student and family and TMLA’s host student and their families) used various conferencing and social media programs both in school and at home to contact each other and get to know each other. Months before the arrival in Italy, students and families have been able to use language abilities to develop relationships for the visits. TMLA is so very grateful to Mr. Maurantonio for all of his hard work establishing this program and to all of our benefactors whose generosity helps to make this wonderful cultural exchange opportunity available to our young women.

ALS ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE CREATORS VISIT TMLA

On December 15, 2014 TMLA was honored to welcome home Jenn Flynn Quinn 03 and her husband Pat, two of the creators of the world renowned ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Pat, who was diagnosed with ALS in 2013, gave a deeply moving talk to an assembly of our students about what ALS is and the realities of battling this illness. The strength and positivity that shone forth from both Jenn & Pat was truly awe-inspiring. When asked who were his inspirations in his battle against ALS he responded, without hesitation, "My wife Jenn, a Mary Louis girl of course!". We are so very grateful to both Pat and Jenn for taking the time to provide the Mary Louis community with such a tremendous example of strength and faith. Our young women are truly inspired to spread awareness and continue to help in the fight against ALS. Please know that our thoughts and prayers remain with the Flynn & Quinn families. And remember Pat...when you married Jenn you became a member of the TMLA family as well. Be assured that Jenn’s 20,000 TMLA “sisters” are praying for you! We will “stay positive” for you both!

TMLA WOMEN: BUILDING A BETTER WORLD TMLA Trustee Pascale Saint Louis-Sablan, Class of 2001, was recently approached by the TV program “Great Spaces Movement” to record a short interview explaining her journey and career as an architect and her extensive international volunteer work. While Pascale felt that this moment was one of her crowning achievements an even greater honor was in store. In the summer of 2015 Pascale was invited for a personal meeting with President Michael Martelly, the President of Haiti. Pascale and President Martelly had a full conversation and dialog where they discussed her architectural and charitable work in Haiti, her education (BArch – Pratt Institute, MS – Columbia University..and of course TMLA!), her recent election as President of the New York City Coalition of Black Architects and the work, both professional and personal that she has been doing all over the world. They had a particularly engaging discussion about how a project Pascale designed for the city of Cap Haitien, Haiti has been winning awards and was featured on the cover of NOMA magazine. President Martelly was particularly impressed when Pascale informed him that, out of over 110,000 licensed architects in the United States, she is only the 315th black woman ever to become a licensed architect. Congratulations Pascale on all of your honors and achievements, we are so very proud of you!

TMLA LOST & FOUND

In 1985 Teresa Caliari Olya's home on Staten Island was robbed, among the jewelry stolen was her 1975 TMLA Class Ring. Fast forward 30 years to 2015 and TMLA received a phone call from Robert Hall…he found her ring by the Raritan River in Edison, NJ! TMLA reached out to Teresa and put her in touch with Mr. Hall and in October of 2015 he returned her ring to her. Mr. Hall is a veteran metal detector who belongs to a group called BRAVO which tries to unearth artifacts from the Revolutionary War. BEAUTIFUL ME program is funded by The Hance Family Foundation, which was established to honor the memories of Emma, Alyson, and Katie Hance, three beautiful little girls who died on July 26, 2009 in a tragic car accident on the Taconic State Parkway; they were only 8, 7, and 5 years old. There is a grim statistic we’d like to share with you: only 2% of women think they are beautiful. “Beautiful Me’s” basic lesson plans are designed to teach girls of all ages how to think positively and with assurance about their bodies, their skills, and their relationships with others. The mission of “Beautiful Me” is to extend the lessons Emma, Alyson, and Katie Hance taught by example through their all too short lives…that being comfortable with who you are makes you a better sister, daughter, and friend. A curriculum based program is administered in three 1-hour sessions by one of TMLA’s teachers and social workers that is designed around Students from TMLA’s new V.O.I.C.E. Leadership Program facilitated a “Beautiful Me” workshop at TMLA for our Freshwomen. The “Beautiful Me” program is a self-esteem program designed to educate young women by promoting appreciation for their genuine qualities, accurate self awareness, and the satisfaction of helping others. This

three core content areas – Emma’s Example, Alyson’s Art, and Katie’s Kindness. The instructors guide the conversations to also include important friendship-building skills and key concepts necessary for building and protecting each young woman’s individual gifts and talents.

TRIPLE CROWN The Mary Louis Academy Class of 2015 Salutatorian, Kylie Chow, and her twin brothers, Dylan and Brandon, are not just triplets… you might just call them the “Triple Crown”. All three Chow siblings ended their final year of high school as academic superstars, with each being honored as a valedictorian or salutatorian in the graduating classes of their respective schools. Dylan and Brandon, both graduated on June 6, 2015 from our brother school Holy Cross High School in Flushing. They had grade point averages only one point from each other, with valedictorian Dylan earning a yearly average of 105, and Brandon graduating with 104. Kylie graduated from TMLA on May 31, 2015 with an impressive GPA of 4.72. Both Kylie and Brandon are currently in their first year at Villanova University in PA, while Dylan is in his first year at Macaulay Honors College in NYC. 83

CSI: JAMAICA ESTATES The Mary Louis Academy’s Forensic Science program won the award for “Best Crime Scene Processing” for the annual CSI Challenge at C.W. Post campus of Long Island University on April 24, 2015. “Best Crime Scene Processing” is one of the most coveted awards at this event. The CSI Challenge is a realistic, hands-on competition designed to provide students the unique opportunity to conduct a full-scale investigation of a fictional crime. Over 800 students from 50 schools in the NY Metro area are invited to participate. Each team of 12 students is given the same mock crime scene, with just seven hours to collect evidence, interrogate suspects and solve the case. Students spend hours sweating over dental molds and footprints, studying blood-spvatter patterns and keeping crime-scene logs. They also use electron microscopes, laptops, evidence bags and walkie-talkies. Teams are assigned numbers for the competition, and no one is supposed to say where they're from, so as not to influence the judges. Cell phones and consulting the Web are banned. Irrelevant evidence is also planted at each crime scene, making the case even tougher to solve. The students persevere, picking out the important evidence, running lab work and comparing notes. As each team reaches its conclusion, it crafts a presentation for the judges.

This is the third year in a row in which TMLA’s young women have achieved one of the top awards. In addition TMLA is the only all-girl school in the City of New York to have won the CSI Challenge!
