Now in our ninth year, Loudoun 40 Under 40 continues to highlight the most enterprising, inventive and unique young professionals in Loudoun County. I know I say it every year (or at least I think it), but this year’s class is especially inspiring.
It’s no secret our world has changed since we began this initiative a decade ago. The past few years in particular have upended how we view our work, our communities and our place in society. Yet, while the pandemic and accompanying Great Resignation led to painstaking hardships for millions of people – hardships we by no means take lightly – it did offer opportunities for innovation.
MOVING LOUDOUN FORWARD ALUMNI
Our honorees not only pulled through a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic, they thrived in the face of it. They stared down daunting challenges with grace and a headstrong commitment to better the lives of those around them.
Indeed, a trend emerged with this year’s group: Many are working in the public and nonprofit sectors to propel Loudoun forward.
As with each class, this year’s is also reflective of our county’s growth. They are diverse in their views, their backgrounds and their industries, with public servants, medical professionals, entrepreneurs, attorneys and more in the mix.
In the pages ahead, our honorees share how they are making their mark on the county and beyond. They will tell you in their own words who they are, what drives them and what they love most about our corner of the world. We hope you enjoy what they have to say.
Lastly, thank you to the 2022 Loudoun 40 Under 40. You are simply amazing, and we commend you for your commitment to making Loudoun such a special place.

“Elevator speech” about you and your company
I am a career hospitality professional who has the luxury of being able to spend my time and energy doing what I love most! I handle all things marketing for the restaurants that I open, and to be honest, it’s never felt like work. Come visit us and just ask for Liz when you get there!
Professional accomplishment of which you are most proud
Greatest professional accomplishment was navigating the pandemic while my husband and I opened our passion project - The Lost Fox. We had no idea what the future would hold. All we did know was that we had some wonderful neighbors who were willing to come out and support us in those scary times.
Most significant nonprofit work/community involvement
A fundraiser we organized for one of our team members. Her twoyear-old nephew was diagnosed with leukemia and her family in Bolivia is struggling to keep up with the medical bills. We partnered with local businesses and restaurants, a wonderful group of volunteers and had a huge showing of love and support.
Personal background and family information
I grew up in Fairfax, VA. My father worked on Capitol Hill for almost 30 years. My mother is the sweetest Georgia peach you could find. I have an older sister that lives in Texas and a little brother in Denver that are both accountants, as well as a little sister who is a rockstar nurse anesthetist in Alaska.
Who do you consider a personal or professional mentor and how did that person help you
I am lucky to have both. He happened to be the person who hired me almost 15 years ago. He was my trusted advisor as we both navigated the nuances and complexities of a rapidly growing company. He coached me from being an employee to being a leader. I am proud to say we are now married.
Favorite hobby or activity, other than work and family
I suppose it’s a little cliché being in the restaurant industry but I love to cook - and I’m actually really good at it. I enjoy running and have completed a couple of half marathons with more to come. I have an immense amount of respect for full marathoners and hope to be one someday!
Favorite thing about living/working in Loudoun
While Loudoun offers so much with respect to culture, quaint little towns, and beautiful places to eat and drink - my favorite thing by far is the friends and colleagues that we have come to know and love here. We have lived in a lot of places, but few, if any, have found such a special place in our hearts.
CHRIS BERNARD
Director of Operations, Sales and Leasing Associate Real Estate Services inc
“Elevator speech” about you and your company
I am the Director of Operations and Sales/Leasing Associate for CRES Inc., a commercial real estate brokerage. I work with owners, investors, and businesses to assist with buying, selling, and leasing commercial/industrial properties. I am also an elected member of the Middleburg Town Council.
Professional accomplishment of which you are most proud
When Covid hit, the Town Council quickly put together a plan to save Middleburg restaurants. We gave a cash infusion to restaurants in exchange for vouchers for carry-out meals for residents. We saved businesses, helped people, and also sparked a great sense of community that has carried forward.
Most significant nonprofit work/community involvement
In 2021, one of our police officers was diagnosed with lymphoma and had to go through 2 rounds of chemo. I wanted Shaun and his family to know that the community was behind them, so I started a GoFundMe that raised $10,000 to help his family offset the expenses surrounding his treatment.
Personal background and family information
I am a proud resident of Middleburg, VA (Loudoun) where I live with my wife, Michelle and my son, Maverick. I spend much of my free time playing tennis and exploring Goose Creek in a canoe. Living right in town gives us incredible access to the shopping, dining, and small-town community.
Who do you consider a personal or professional mentor and how did that person help you
I moved to Loudoun County to work as an analyst for Ben Weg dam, CEO of West Federal Retail. Over 5 years, I worked very closely with Ben, and learned quite a bit about not just finance and business, but about life. I’ve moved on professionally, but we still find time to catch up on a regular basis.
Favorite hobby or activity, other than work and family
I’ve been a huge tennis enthusiast since I was a kid, but have focused a lot more on it the past few years. It’s a fun sport, but also great for fitness, relationships, and family time. I’ve done a lot of coaching (baseball), and hope to combine the two hobbies and become a tennis coach someday.
Favorite thing about living/ working in Loudoun
There is something for everyone and there are some really special people. You can do anything you need to do without leaving the county. Being involved with our local government has really connected me to the local residents and businesses and given me a huge appreciation for our community.

Being on the Board of Directors for two local organizations, Loudoun Soccer Club and Friends of Loudoun Mental Health, has given me the opportunity to give back to the community on two topics that are extremely important to me - soccer and mental health - and has helped shape me into who I am today.
Personal background and family information
I’m a life-long DMV local. I grew up inside the beltway in Silver Spring, MD. I moved to Northern Virginia after college in 2009 and bought my house in Loudoun a few years later. My wonderful wife, Emily, is a teacher in Montgomery County, MD, and we have two amazing dogs, Scout and Rye.
Who do you consider a personal or professional mentor and how did that person help you
My dad has always been the person I have looked up to the most. He is an extremely hard-working person who always puts his family first, while also running his own law firm. Both he and my mom always stressed the importance of doing the right thing and giving back to the community.
Favorite hobby or activity, other than work and family
I’m a lifelong soccer fan. While I still enjoy playing, I’m looking forward to doing more coaching in the future. I’m also a Manchester United fanatic and rarely miss a game...and if I do, I will always watch a replay as soon as possible.
Favorite thing about living/working in Loudoun
I love the community that is Loudoun. The entire area is full of diverse people with unique backgrounds and perspectives. However, my experience meeting people here has been that these differences only serve to strengthen the appreciation that we have for one another.

Personal background and family information
My roots run deep in Loudoun County as my family moved here in 1991 when I was 1 year old. I attended “the original” Round Hill Elementary, BRMS and LVHS. After the military, my fiancé and I moved back, got married, bought our first home and had our first of many children. :)
Who do you consider a personal or professional mentor and how did that person help you
Two huge mentors of mine are my father and late grandfather. Both of them taught me that family and faith are the two most important aspects of one’s life. Having manners and showing respect are at the forefront of any relationship and lastly, recognition is earned and not given.
Favorite hobby or activity, other than work and family
Two of my favorite hobbies are golf and boating (really all water sports)! Another passion of mine is yardwork as I often find myself being overly particular with lawn stripes, mulch beds, exterior lighting, and plant design as if it was once another occupation I had!
Favorite thing about living/working in Loudoun
My favorite thing about living in Loudoun is the rich history that you can find in every corner along with the beautiful landscape consisting of two historic rivers and the Blue Ridge Mountains out my back window. Aside from the physical aspects, the variety of activities at an arm’s reach.

My work on our programs has provided significant support to small businesses, especially through the grant efforts since the start of the pandemic. These included outreach and administering four programs with a total of $23 million in grants distributed to over two thousand Loudoun businesses.
Personal background and family information
I grew up in Raleigh and moved here to complete Masters in Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning with Virginia Tech, with a focus on economic development and sustainability. I was attracted by opportunities to serve the community as we pursue increasingly strategic approaches to development.
Who do you consider a personal or professional mentor and how did that person help you
Colleen Kardasz instilled a commitment to excellence in our team and I work hard to implement this in my work. I had a major supporting role as Colleen led our grant programs helping small businesses during the pandemic and other new initiatives while providing many opportunities to learn.
Favorite hobby or activity, other than work and family
My first experience in Loudoun came via a long bike ride on the W&OD Trail and exploring trails in our region continues to be a favorite pastime. Trails have so much potential for connecting communities and help us to fit in healthy time outside amidst all the time we spend in front of screens.
Favorite thing about living/work ing in Loudoun
It’s incredibly energizing to work for our County’s leaders on initiatives that help shape our growing community. Loudoun is uniquely positioned to offer the opportunities and quality of life associated with both the city and the country, and our work helps achieve that vision into the future.

Professional accomplishment of which you are most proud
In 2014, my brother Kyle and I founded LoCoSports to provide news coverage of high school sports in Loudoun County. Since then, LoCoSports has become the premier news site for high school athletics in NoVA, amassing more than 5 million page views and 80,000 unique visitors every single year.

I founded the Jeffrey C. Fowler Memorial Scholarship in honor of my late Uncle Jeff who was a 1983 graduate of Park View HS. We received our 501(c)(3) status in 2019 and have given away more than $30,000 (and growing!) in college scholarships to LCPS seniors.
Personal background and family information
I was born and raised in Leesburg by two wonderful parents and five competitive brothers. Growing up in Loudoun County, I learned how important this community is to each other and wanted to spend my adult life giving back to the community that helped raise me.
Who do you consider a personal or professional mentor and how did that person help you
To this day, my mom and dad are still my biggest personal and professional influences. My mom’s heart-filled guidance and my dad’s logic-ridden thinking have taught me that the most effective way to serve my community is simply to listen to the needs of the people in it and ask how I can help.
Favorite hobby or activity, other than work and family
During the height of the Covid pandemic, my mom and I started a baking challenge called Around the World in 80 Bakes where we baked a different dessert from 80 different countries over the course of just about 80 weeks. It was so much fun! One day, I hope to open a bakery for my mom!
Favorite thing about living/working in Loudoun
I love the small town feel of Loudoun County. When I was born here in the early 90s, there were less than 90,000 in Loudoun, and although that number has increased by nearly 400% since then, I still get that small town feel walking down King Street or catching a ball game at Fireman’s Field.

I’m a local realtor, specializing in helping Loudoun County families trade up when they outgrow their current homes. I’m also a founding leader of The Loudoun Moms, a community of more than 10,000 mothers who support each other in the area.
Professional accomplishment of which you are most proud
Last year, my real estate business came solely from referrals and I was among the top 20 producers in my company of more than 1,000 agents. I’m proud to show my children that I can balance being a devoted mom with being a successful business owner of two companies, while also investing in our community through volunteer work.
Most significant nonprofit work/community involvement
I prioritize supporting my children’s schools and teachers as much as possible. When I was growing up, my parents didn’t have the time or the money to help much at school. I was always the child the parent liaisons helped. Now, I feel it’s important to give back. I am the first one the parent liaison calls when they need something for a student.
Personal background and family information
I grew up in the Gold Country of Northern California and I met my husband there. We moved to Loudoun County 12 years ago when he medically retired from the Air Force and took a job with the government. Now, we love living in Loudoun with our nine-year-old daughter, our six-year-old son, and our adorable dog named Bernie.
Who do you consider a personal or professional mentor and how did that person help you
Karen Cooper is my professional mentor. We share many commonalities in our personal and professional lives. She is always there to keep me on track when I have a question about my business or I need to talk through an idea.
Favorite hobby or activity, other than work and family
My favorite activity is gardening. We bought our house in the fall of 2019. Since then, we have added over 40 trees and countless plants to our backyard. On weekends, you can find me at Watermark Woods in Hamilton buying native Virginia plants. We’ve installed three butterfly gardens, and I love the whimsy and beauty they bring to our property.
Favorite thing about living/working in Loudoun
Everything you need is here in Loudoun! There are plenty of work opportunities and it’s easy to commute to DC or the surrounding metro area. You can enjoy the hustle and bustle of the downtown shopping or take in the breathtaking country mountainscape while relaxing at one of our amazing local wineries or breweries. There are tons of activities for the kids and there’s great nightlife for the adults. Everything is within driving distance. It’s a wonderful place to live!

Loudoun Mentors was created in 2020 by underrepresented graduates of Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) to help empower and support current high school students of marginalized identities. We believe that some of the inequities students face are due to a lack of visibility and community.
Professional accomplishment of which you are most proud
As a student myself, I’m very proud to have designed a national DEI fellowship program for the Recycling Partnership. Creating the program was a great opportunity to work hands-on with corporate partners (e.g. Coca-Cola) and help implement equity at its foundation for a new generation of innovators.
Most significant nonprofit work/community involvement
Supporting students through Loudoun Mentors has meant so much to me as an LCPS graduate. From the virtual college panels we do for Black Student Unions (BSUs) and CAMPUS programs to our various mentees, meeting with so many current students has shown my team and I the abundant value of community.
Personal background and family information
I’ve lived in Loudoun County for the vast majority of my life! I graduated from Briar Woods High School in 2016 and attended Penn State as an honors student. My baby brother currently plays football at James Madison University - he and my incredible parents are my daily inspiration.
Who do you consider a personal or professional mentor and how did that person help you
My mentor in life was a professor/reverend I met in college named Dr. King. She unfortunately passed away last year, but she told me often “whatever field you enter...whatever work you do...be a historian first.” Education informs emotions and serves us in so many powerful ways!
Favorite hobby or activity, other than work and family
When I have free time, I love when I get the chance to be creative. I like to make colorful graphics in my free time or paint something outdoors when it’s nice out! Being artistic has always been my preferred way of expressing myself.
Favorite thing about living/working in Loudoun
My favorite thing about living and working in Loudoun is my change in perspective. As a student, I always yearned for a sense of community, and now I’m finally in the position to help create it. For that reason, it’s been surreal building in a community that has grown so much since I was younger.

I am an immigrant from Honduras and was raised in a small village. Wanting a better life, I moved to America and attended JMU. It was intimidating to start over in a new country. I am married to my wife Lindsay, who works alongside me in the company business, and have two children ages 4 and 1.
Who do you consider a personal or professional mentor and how did that person help you
My father-in-law Robert Church is my personal and professional mentor. As an entrepreneur, he gives invaluable counsel on business decisions and how to best implement them. Favorite hobby or activity, other than work and family
My favorite new pastime is learning to be a grillmaster. I have loved working on perfecting my grilling techniques and tackling new and different recipes. I typically only take one day off a week, so Sunday is my day to grill up something new for the family and play in the yard with my kids.

As a prosecutor, I often worked with victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, or child abuse. Who do you consider a personal or professional mentor and how did that person help you
When my family’s HVAC business sold, my new boss, Troy, became a very unexpected mentor of mine. I probably learned more about myself and about business in the year I spent reporting to him than I had in the five years prior. If I didn’t meet him, I don’t think I’d be where I am today.
