The Lydians Present: Arise, Shine!

Mission

Statement We believe in God. Our belief demands that we live in service of God’s Greater Glory. We recognise that music is a gift and that the ability to perform it is a grace - this leads us to develop our skills to their fullest and to give to all who wish, our cooperation and support that they may develop their own ability. We recognise that our improvement as musicians will be achieved only through unrelenting effort, through practice and discipline, through accepting instruction and by our willingness to be patient as we teach and encourage others.

2

The f ruit of our effort we offer only to God to feed His hungry to heal His sick to educate His untaught. We offer our song as well: to bring solace where there is grief, to mark his presence where there is joy, and to bring His Name to all people. We set ourselves the goal of excellence; Perfection will not be achieved in our mortal lives but that knowledge does not remit our effort, for we know that if judged worthy, we shall hear the Perfect Harmony, Eternal; as we return to God.

Musical

Director’s

Message A chorister sent me this message after a particularly trying virtual session. They went on to say that issues like the one that took place in that particular meeting were uncalled for and “had it been them” they would… well, they wouldn’t be as passive as I was in the situation. I think my response was the equivalent of a shrug and “people will have feelings and they won’t always have a handle on those; as long as persons are respectful, the aim is for this to be a welcome space for all of us.” While I think that answer correct, it may not be as sufficient. So to her question I dedicate my message this year, as well as to those who aren’t with us on the live stage. It has been hard this year to not feel like Sisyphus. Mistrust, conspiracy theories, misinformation and discord are now landmines in the paths of previously innocuous conversations. Patience became the virtue most tested, and caution in ever decreasing supply. We have essentially been awake to a certain reality: we do not get the luxury of a world where the common good is universally accepted or agreed upon, and many believe our privileges and access are indisputable.

Being largely at home, separated and out of (physical and metaphorical) touch, there is a bleakness that can leak into our soul. Now, I do not think this is rare or new. I believe we are constantly faced with this dark underside to human nature and interaction. However, where before we had ready access to hope, we now are more likely to see the inverse. How many of us would have bad or heavy days at work or out and about, that got immediate relief just sharing space with a friend? How many could feel the immediate calm of a tight hug? To enjoy the release of a belly laugh, slapping your partner as you try to catch your breath, tears in the corner of your eye. We miss connection and touch; we also miss the feeling of power over our circumstances.

…and when you feel short on patience, especially when righteous indignation is your helm and battle cry, do me a favour? Play your favourite song. Contemplate your favourite painting or even a new series of mixed media art. Take in a dance video or dance where you are to music you choose or only you can hear. Allow yourself to be beautifully human, and to appreciate what that creates. It is hard to change a mind, it is a matter of connection to change a heart. And if the only heart you change is your own, for that moment, accept it and refresh yourself. Peace and Love I leave with you. Bless, Carl-Anthony December 2021

Knowing this, I offer these simple reminders: • if you are tired, rest where and when you can. • if you can help, do so enthusiastically. • if you can be a light in someone’s darkness, let your heart shine to banish loneliness 7

Seasons GREETINGS!

GILLIAN BENJAMIN Head - Brand & Marketing (Ag.) Group Marketing & Communications

There’s something about the energy of people gathered in a room, that just can’t be replicated behind the barrier of the screen. Eager performers, the chatter of the audience, last minute patrons, scrambling to discreetly locate their seats – these are the moments that live concerts are made of and we couldn’t be happier to welcome the Lydians back to it all. Their talent and magic are best experienced live, and while we’re proud of the way they quickly pivoted to online performances, we’re glad to support them, as they preserve this treasured annual tradition, of the annual Lydians Christmas concert. With renditions that will beckon us to “Arise, Shine!” we have absolutely no doubt that their music will enrapt, inspire, soothe and delight. So from all of us at First Citizens, relax, enjoy and may the songs and steel of the talented Lydians, add some sparkle to your season, and usher in a safe and happy Christmas 2021. 8

PROFESSOR STERLING FROST Chairman - The Lydians

Oh how we’ve longed for this moment that’s finally here! Having rallied through with a virtual offering in 2020, this Christmas, we’re both thankful and thrilled, for the cherished opportunity to perform onstage - live and in our full Lydians’ glory. As we relish in this welcome return to performance normalcy, we invite you to – Arise, Shine! our yuletide production, which over the years has become as much a gift to us, as it is to our audience. Through this year’s edition, we’ll continue our longstanding Lydians’ custom of singing our chorus in the spirit of family and friendship, of using our voices for reason and upliftment. This year, we’re even more delighted to sing for the blessing of our collective freedom, reassurance of your delighted smiles and the joy of being physically cheered on by your happy sways. Arise with us! Arise, and look inward to find the many blessings that this year brought, despite its unique circumstances – arise, and look forward to the sense of renewed hope that Christmas always brings. Shine! Be kind, show love, and make a difference in the life of another, as the divine light of this season illuminates your heart. This Christmas, let the soul-stirring music of our dynamic chorale, bring joy, peace and hope to you and your loved ones. Arise, Shine!, as you reflect on the blessings of Christmases past, and look forward with joyous anticipation of those yet to come. 11

Moments & Music by Carl-Anthony Hines This year through song, dance and spoken word, we weave a tapestry of hope in the face of despair and joy in the time of loss and sorrow.

Memoriam to meandering…

Crooning Chrome

We open with the word, and a song of comfort, the sweet acknowledgement that even in dark times we are never truly alone – those “Angels watchin’ over me, mah Lawd.”

We can all relate to feeling untethered in these times – definitely more so than usual. From a walk with a fellow wandering soul, we listen to the many moods of a pan yard in preparation. Stage side classical into joyful calypso, Lydian Steel, conducted by Maestro Hudlin make those pans sing and the music shine.

We then move to Jewish Liturgic call to worship. Over a bare soundscape, voices cry in supplication. From there we are taken, via Paranjoti, to India, with “an expression of uninhibited festivity” that is his Dravidian Dithyramb. We continue to make our way Westward, where Britain’s Mvula by way of Caribbean musician Walters bids us “Sing to the Moon and the stars will shine over you, lead you to the other side.”

Lo, He Comes We reflect on a world in change, as Sister shares with us her adapting to the new normal, and how they find her. She sends us to the Altar, and thus bid we mark the advent hope, annunciation, and birth. Rejoicing in the gift of salvation, we run with Torches to Bethlehem!

And I think to Myself… In the bang, boom and whistle that accompanies the most wonderful time of the year, we pause and reflect on the annual reminder – Love! In a season of light and lights, may our hearts be renewed

“People all over the world, …they’re coming around and they’re saying I love you!” …What a Wonderful world.

Pan, Panacea, Pandemic “It’s the most wonderful time of the year!” — an emphatic statement at the beginning of one of the most beloved Christmas songs. This is undeniably the mood in which The Lydians wants to welcome and enfold our concert audience after a long, long 2021 that has been pretty much anything but wonderful. Lydian Steel certainly has its part to play in this embrace and I am happy to report on behalf of the group. We offer in this year’s programme music to uplift and heal — dynamic and engaging solo pieces as well as sensitive and strong accompaniment to the singers. This season, we have finally been able to properly welcome our newest player Chelsea Hanumanta into the fold. Waiting patiently but excitedly in the wings for quite some time through the various postponements and rearrangements of the year’s activities, Chelsea has hit the ground running in our frontline. She is a very accomplished young musician and has refreshed our group with her wonderful positive attitude and enthusiasm, even when trying to tread through the new music and expectations being thrown at her left and right. Look out for the insightful article she has co-authored with another member of our Lydian Steel youth, Kamaria Charles Richards! Our other personnel for Christmas include: the usual core solid stalwarts / suspects, Jo (also Lydians’ Assistant General Manager), Tonya, Akil, Tommy and Dennis; our seasonal supports and veteran members, Avis and Kareem; our long-in-coming but always welcome bass player, Sekou; and — our recently elevated to Assistant

Production Manager — arranger and oneman percussion ensemble (under Dennis’ watchful eye) Kwesi. It is our pleasure to work with Guest Conductor, Michael Hudlin and we appreciate his eye for precision and style while willing to be accommodating. We also recognize our fellow partner musicians in this production who provide their own unique sound. I thank each member of Lydian Steel for the decision they have made to participate in these Christmas performances. I imagine that a lot of thought must have been put into the potential risk to themselves and their families given the dire circumstances of our current times. I am proud to say that, throughout our rehearsal and performance process, care has always been taken to observe the highest protocols of safety and wellness. I am encouraged by the dedication and adaptability demonstrated by our players — the willingness to deal with often changing rehearsal conditions and locations, the “all hands on deck” attitude displayed towards the endless unpacking and repacking of our unwieldy instruments and equipment, and the quick work and discipline applied to the learning of the repertoire. The call this year has been “Arise, Shine!” and the Lydian Steel family has stepped up and answered with a blinding, resounding, brilliant “Yes!”. Yours in excellence, Astra Noel, Lydian Steel Captain December 2021 15

“ Light

& Love” Reflections by Kamaria Charles Richards & Chelsea Hanumanta DECEMBER 2021

2. How has the pandemic affected you both personally and as a musician?

1. How did you find out about The Lydians and why did you join? Chelsea: My teacher, Mr. Andrew Samlal, told me about Lydian Steel as he was their accompanist. After discussion with him and my parents, I decided to audition for the band to gain experience. Kamaria: In 2018, my music teacher and former Lydians Musical Director, Ms. Granderson, introduced me to the Lydian Steel as she thought it would benefit me as an aspiring musician. I was obviously very grateful for the opportunity and a little intimidated because I knew how recognized the group was. 20

Chelsea: At times, stuck at home, one can feel rather lonely and saddened, however, I think this allowed for the embracing and valuing of important things around us that we may have taken for granted in the past such as family, friends, and God. As a musician, the restriction regarding performing discouraged me a bit but it also welcomed more time to practice, improve and reflect. Kamaria: Personally, the pandemic affected me a lot as I was in the middle of my CSEC Examinations, however I was able to successfully achieve all my passes, and even again with my CAPE Unit 1 Examinations this year, I was again very successful, and I thank God and my family for that. Musically, I wasn’t affected that much as I have my own instrument, and I also attend music lessons, so I was still able to practice.

3. How were you able to cope with the pandemic? Chelsea: Embracing music, as well as family and keeping in contact with friends, helped me to cope during this rollercoaster of a year.

Kamaria: I was mainly able to cope thanks to God, my family, and friends, and of course, my music. The check-ups from our current Musical Director last year also played a big role.

4. How is your experience being the youngest members of Lydian Steel? What are your hopes for your future with The Lydians? Chelsea: The atmosphere at Lydians is completely different. It is no longer about just learning notes but also being able to read and produce music quickly. I’m surrounded by all these amazingly talented and experienced players. I’m so grateful for the things that I’m learning and the experiences that come with it. I’m so excited for my future with Lydians. Kamaria: When I first joined three years ago, it was very intimidating being amongst all these talented musicians, but the members of the Lydian Steel really welcomed me into their little family and I’m extremely grateful for that. Overall, the Lydians is one big community that truly cares about all its members and I’m very enthusiastic to continue my musical journey with them. 21 21

5. How is your experience preparing for a concert during a pandemic? What does the theme “Arise, Shine!” mean to you? Chelsea: We were able to practice and put on an entire production in a short space of time with the enthusiasm emanating from the theme, “Arise, Shine!”. The darkness of the pandemic has caused us to realize that our light comes from the Lord. When we embrace this fact and allow God to shine through to us, only then will we be enlightened in the realest and fullest way, and I think spreading this message is very relevant in many lives today with the pandemic putting it into context. Kamaria: In my opinion, it’s not terrible and not too different to how we used to prepare for concerts previously. Last year, I had the experience of preparing for the Christmas concert during the pandemic and it turned out great. I am very excited to see how the whole concert turns out; it’s always fun to perform for more than just one night. For me, “Arise, Shine!” is a way of bringing light and love to others during this perilous time through music which is one of the reasons why I decided to become a musician.

Reflections by Edward Cumberbatch Tenor Soloist

Growing up as a preacher’s kid in the village of La Pastora, Santa Cruz had its pluses. Some things you could easily take for granted. There was green all around. A lush pasture right across the road with a sprinkling of a few cows to add purpose to the colour scape. The hills were also ever present and all around so that one could lift up one’s eyes to them and wonder where help would come from. With both parents as pastors, how convenient it was that the church was only a hop skip and a jump away. Christmas was always a special time. Sure, the thought of a new matchbox car or even a wow present like a Scalextric set was exciting. However, it was the regimen and certainty of the Christmas day schedule that remains memorable today. The day always started with “Rise and Shine!”, spoken … well practically sung by mummy as she called to wake up her three sleepy children to get ready to go to sunrise service at 5 am. That chant call set the tone for the day. It was filled with urgency yet inviting, of anticipation and yet promise for the day which had already begun to unfold. 24

Not unlike my childhood scenario is the present-day Lydian reality. The call has gone out to Arise, Shine for Thy Light is come. Arising, as difficult as it may be, is the more straightforward of the twofold command. The Lydian leadership has certainly set the tone. Their tireless efforts have not gone unnoticed and in fact have been infectiously inviting the urgency of purpose and resolve. Shining, now that requires some real determination and a whole lot of help. Fortunately, we have good reason to shine, for Thy light has come. We are guided through the music, sung or played, the dance, the word, the art to shine, not to be ourselves seen but to reflect His light and honour Him.

25 25

Reflections by Michael Hudlin Guest Conductor & Baritone

“See, night still covers the earth, and darkness over the people, on you the Lord is rising and his glory shall be seen.” Arise, Shine is a call to action. We are being called to be a light to a nation in darkness, to be that beacon of hope, a reminder that this night we face is only temporary. I sincerely hope that this programme inspires you to hold out your light and lead everyone to the brighter future we all desire.
