Veterans club helping brothers in arms

THE Veterans Support Centre in Laidley has served armed forces personnel in the Lockyer and Brisbane Valley region for the past 15 years.

The club’s mission is to ensure veterans have assistance in place for their wellbeing, care and compensation.
They provide a wide range of support, from helping with a social venue veterans and their families can visit.
Club treasurer Andrew Black said the group met for a social get-together once a week.
“Tuesday is like a drop-in centre,” he said.
“It’s for people to drop in and have a chat, if they’re feeling down and out, we can give them some help or just to come in and have something to eat.”

Pagett said the centre was an inviting place for all service personnel to come along to.
“A lot of the fellas in here are ex-Royal Air Force,” he said.
“So they all know someone who knows someone from where they’ve been, so they have a great deal they can talk about.”
Mr Pagett said people can book an appointment with the club for support with personal issues.

“We go to DVA on behalf of the veterans for help,” Ms Lindsay said.
The club has helped serve over 400 members since opening its doors in 2008.
Mr Black said the club slowed down during the COVID period but felt encouraged to keep its doors open.
“We thought we don’t seem to be doing any good at the moment,” he said.
“We rang DVA, and DVA doesn’t want us to close because even the DVA sends people out to us.”
The centre is a not-forgrants and fundraisers.
They are holding a barbecue fundraiser from 7am12pm at Ferrari Park, Laidley on May 27.
