light. They also have an outstanding lifespan of up to 20,000 (yes, twenty thousand) hours which means you’ll never need to replace a bulb again!

or those of you wishing to get your hands dirty at the show, we are pleased to announce that Plasma Part will be running their very own workshop feature on the day for all you budding, skilled or just plain curious welders. Plasma Part welding guru, Thomas
Buckle, said: ‘We will have a full-scale demonstration of all the tools and machinery that we have on offer. It will cover pretty much everything you’d want to be doing in your own garage. ‘Demonstrations will include sessions on plasma cutting, TIG and MIG welding, and arc welding, while
we’ll also be dishing out all the best tips to handle your equipment and will have all the gear on show for visitors to browse through.’ Not only will Plasma Part have all the equipment you need on sale, but they are giving you the chance to try your hand on the day, so you can get a real feel for welding. Two demonstrators will be running simultaneously all day so you can take home a practical experience, and maybe even use it as a ‘try before you buy’ exercise. Even if you just want to be educated in the art of welding, the team will happily welcome you to their stand and you can go home more knowledgeable and clued up on welding at the very least.

he first official pictures of the fifth-generation Land Rover Discovery have been released prior to its first public appearance at this year’s Paris Motor Show. As is becoming customary for car manufacturers these days, the new Discovery has been teased out to the public over several weeks, with various ‘ambassadors’ and celebrities helping to showcase some of the latest features to grace the new Discovery. However, while getting Bear Grylls to jump out of a plane and using the new ‘Intelligent Seat Fold’ technology is eye-catching, not many of us will be trying to reconfigure our Discovery’s seating arrangement through our smartphone whilst plummeting at 125mph towards the Earth’s surface. Just a hunch. Sadly this issue closed just before the Paris Motor Show and the Discovery’s 28 September debut, so we’ll be bringing you all the facts and in-depth
analysis on the new Disco in our next issue (December) of The Landy. But that doesn’t mean we can’t tell you a little bit more about the Discovery in the meantime. Firstly, though, a word from Gerry McGovern, Land Rover’s Chief Design Officer, who said: ‘New Discovery redefines the large SUV. Land Rover’s design and engineering teams have revolutionised the Discovery DNA to create a highly desirable, extremely versatile and hugely capable premium SUV.’ If we break down Mr McGovern’s statement, you can get an idea of what we’re likely to get with the new Discovery. It is still very much a large SUV and will top the Discovery family tree ahead of the Discovery Sport. However, following the launch of the baby Disco two years ago, the exterior of that vehicle was always going to dictate the design of this new daddy Disco. As with the modern-day Range Rover clan, it’s difficult to distinguish between the new Discovery and Disco Sport from the front and only when you
peer down the side of the vehicle that you notice any standout differences. Notably, this new Discovery sits more squat on the road than its predecessor, which may make it look – and drive – better on the road, but what will the reduced ground clearance make of terrain that hasn’t been steamrollered? Will it be as good off-road as a D4? If so, it will no doubt require all of Land Rover’s latest off-road tech to ensure that it is. Inside, you could be forgiven for thinking you’re in an enlarged Disco Sport. There’s still seven seats which folds completely flat for maximum practicality, but those rear seats will be suitable for kings and queens, and not just little princes and princesses. Last month Land Rover unveiled a new 240hp version of its 2.0-litre four-cylinder TD4 Ingenium engine and we’re putting our money on that being the engine that the brand launches with. Figures are expected to be around 45mpg for a combined fuel economy cycle and with performance delivering a 0-60mph sprint in about 8.0 seconds. On paper at least, the new Discovery is shaping up nicely. Prices are estimated to start from approximately £45,000 – a substantial amount of money for a vehicle that prides itself on being family orientated. With the introduction of the Discovery Sport there was always going to be a free pass onto higher tariffs, though. We’ll have to wait to drive the Discovery to give a full verdict, but if it’s a little bit better than the Discovery 4 in every area, this is going to be one hell of a Land Rover and one hell of a car.

Goodwinch readies the G10 S
mell that son? That’s the smell of burning winches. And you hear that? Ah yes, the sound of whining in the morning. Winching can be a precise art or it can be more like a battle in a warzone, all mud, shouting, confusion and, if you’re not careful, quite a lot of blood. Like any good soldier though, you don’t want to go into action with a weapon that’s liable to jam in the mud or which may not work at the critical moment. So you
choose your winch carefully. And thereafter it is your winch and you need to look after it. Repeat: ‘This is my winch. There are many like it, but this one is mine.’ So which winch do you choose? There are many to choose from, but for a good winch it’s certainly worth looking at the new model from Goodwinch. How did they come up with that name? Alongside the new G12 twin-motor winch, Goodwinch has launched a single-motored winch,
the G10. All its winches are made to order so you can specify exactly what you need in terms of drums, bowropes and so on. The one you see in the photos here has a Bowmotor 2 fitted with a mid-sized drum which Goodwinch call the Large Drum which is logical I’m sure. Whatever, it can take an 11mmx38m (125ft) Dyneema or budget bowrope. If you needed it, there is an extra large drum available, which may be called the Extra Large Drum or
Ginormous Drum or something. The Bowmotor 2 works with a Bowright solenoid for long, reliable service. What you can also see is all the elements that make this Goodwinch good, from large drum roller bearings to V-Ring seals, that make this winch both waterproof and very robust over a long period of time. Many of the items are milled from solid aluminium. This ‘King of TDS Winches’ follows on a long line of long-lived
models designed with the help of David Bowyer. David has been working with winches for more than four decades. It is thought that many of the original G10 and G12 waterproof models are still in service today. Given that they were built in the late 1990s and so are 15-20 years old, that’s quite a reassuring statistic when looking at buying one of the new winches. TDS winches are now in their ninth year of production, making them a well-known name in the

he Alu-Cabs Icarus roof conversion for Defenders gives you more space, more flexibility and more security

Factor 55 Winch Protection
T
he company sounds like it makes serious sunscreen protection, but instead Factor 55 has just released a really interesting hook they’re calling the UltraHook. Just taking a look at the hook shows how versatile it is. It’s CNC machined from military-grade aluminium, so there’s plenty of strength there to start with. The advantage it has is that
it offers a closed system for winch cables or ropes. There is a safety latch over the mouth of the hook, and when you slide your ca-ble in there the latch folds down flat into the hook so you don’t snag up on it. When the cable is safely in, then there’s a locking pin which is housed within the hook which you can use to lock the safety latch across the mouth of the hook. That cable is not coming out that way. There is also a hole machined into the body of the hook which can take a shackle pin directly. Add in rubber pads so that your fairlead doesn’t get scraped around, and you have a pretty useful and safe piece of kit. Plus, it looks pretty trick too! Finally, note the fingergrips. Factor 55 put these on one side only, so you are pushed into having the mouth of the hook pointing upwards. That means if something hideous happens the body of the hook will fly into the ground, not up into the air or towards anything else nearby. The conversion hinges the new roof up so that you have much more space and headroom in your Defender and all the bedding and bed is above you, ready for you to sort it out and hop in when you’re ready. You don’t even need to leave the vehicle, which could be handy at times. It’s all robustly made, with the aluminium roof being fully insulated for heat, cold and noise. There are three windows which zip open but they have mesh screens to keep the bugs out. Those bugs might be attracted by the two LED reading lamps which are fitted to the bed. This seems a well thought out design based on some serious experience. It’s also pretty easy to fit. They send you the roof and the whole kit with the instructions. You simply unbolt your roof and bolt this one on. That means you could take it with you to your next Defender, and simply reattach the
original roof to the old vehicle. The whole caboodle sits 18cm higher than the standard roof, and it weighs 130kg, but against that you have to discount the weight of the original roof. This conversion means you have a rugged Defender during the day, exploring where few can explore,
yet in the evening it turns into a civilised camper van, with room to stand, a bed all ready and all mod cons. The price is £7300 and you’ll find more info and how to order here: xs4x4.parts

entle Tent – what a great name for a company. This Austrian organisation makes a series of imaginative tents and can then fill them with stylish furniture. One of the keys is that the whole thing, from tent to sofas, are all supported not by tiresome bits of aluminium extrusion and string but by air. The GT Classic is indeed their classic tent. It must be said that from some angles it looks like something that would form part of the stage at Glastonbury, but you can enjoy it without the mud and U2. Bliss. For Landy owners, it’s worth noting that the tent is mainly designed to go up against a vehicle, either the rear
or side. The Car Connection makes for a snug fit against the vehicle. This means you can have it right against the door of your 110 and keep out of the elements even with the rear door open. It’s easy to put up, even easier if you’re using a pump attached to your
vehicle, and then you can do what you want – add groundsheet, or front cover or, with some extra bracing, it can freestand. It must be said that Gentle Tent have some very classy looking sofas to go with it, that would be sofa, day bed, or simply bed for anyone who doesn’t want to sleep on the ground. Far be it for us to ever recommend going to a boot sale, but this would also make a great stand or stall if you needed somewhere eye-catching to display whatever it is you are flogging – old parts from a discarded project, partner, whatever. So for a camping trip with a stylish difference, we recommend taking the weight off at the Gentle Tent stand.

pending time outdoors is great, but sometimes it’s nice not to have to spend too much time rubbing sticks together to get a fire going or wondering if that bit of chicken really is past its use by date. A few creature comforts make the whole experience more enjoyable, and that’s what this selection of equipment from APB will achieve. Have Landy, will travel – in some style. It all starts with managing to keep food chilled or indeed frozen, otherwise you’re looking at running out of fresh food in 24 hours or so, depending on where you are. Great british land rover show Wales is calling L lanerchindda Farm is one of those places that once you’ve been for the first time, you’ll return home already planning your next visit. This serene bed and breakfast, perched upon the Car-marthenshire hillside, first entered Land Rover owners’ consciousness under the stewardship of Nick Bointon, as an ideal resting spot just outside Llandovery for green lane adventures. Since those days, the new management partnership of Martin and Lynne Hadley, plus sons Mark and Andrew, has only facilitated the farm’s rise in popularity. The Hadley’s previous experience came at a successful hotel in the Lake District, before acquiring the farm
some ten years ago now. For a real taste of the Llanerchindda hospitality, you’ll need to do just that… taste! Should you arrive there just approaching lunchtime, you’ll be subject to Lynne and Mark’s culinary expertise. The other half of the team are Martin and Andrew, who together oversee the front of house and as with all of the Hadleys, they are more than happy to assist your stay in whichever way possible. Annotated maps, portable sat-navs or even a local to guide you on your way, are readily available throughout your visit. The Defender 4x4 D efender 4x4 is a bespoke Land Rover Specialist, but that doesn’t mean they just do fancy upgrades. But it is the place for well-fabricated bits of metal to protect your Landy. First and foremost, there’s no point in adding bits to your vehicle if it’s going to get nicked, as so many Defenders do. So the very simple, very strong and very effective Safe T Pedal is worth a look. It’s a fabricated steel sheet with a strong lock. The whole thing goes over your pedals and locks into place. There’s no way you can get it off and it’s a highly visible bright-yellow deterrent. Diesel Power Plus I
n the modern world we apparently live in, running a diesel engine and a 4x4 isn’t always seen as the most social thing you could do. Look
at the way cities are now thinking of banning diesels, and the way the EU is rowing back on its championing of diesel engines. So it behoves us who love the smell of diesel in the morning to do what we can to be seen as upright citizens. At least, after our first coffee. And if all this saves us money then that’s just a happy by-product. Diesel additives are certainly one way to go, and one such product is being brought to market by Tunit. awn and I first visited Iceland many years ago and were so impressed with the people and the country that we have returned many times. We began to run expedi-tions in 2010 and currently spend just over three months each year there either ex-ploring with clients on overland and/or photographic expeditions or just for pleas-ure. What attracted us to return after that first visit, and on later trips venturing into the interior, was the
prospect of seeing some of the most spectacular scenery on Earth in a land that has been described as Europe’s last wilderness. The country is truly amazing and seems to ‘have it all’, from dramatic coastlines and fjords to ice-capped mountains and majestic glaciers; from farm land around the coast to desert terrain in the interior that goes on for miles and miles - and not for-getting those volcanoes, hot springs and the aurora borealis Northern Lights.
We currently organise and lead 4x4 expeditions during July, August and early Sep-tember as well as offering the opportunity to fly-drive during the rest of the year.
