Welcome...

to the Feb/Mar issue of the Knutsford Directory, your local community magazine. Well, after a brief spell of restrictions being lifted around Christmas we are back in lockdown again. Vaccinations are now underway at Knutsford Community Hospital with the elderly and vulnerable being contacted first. Hopefully this signals better times ahead as 2020 was certainly a challenging and distressing year for many of us. Now the days are getting longer and the nights shorter as we inch our way towards Spring. Snowdrops and daffodils are peeping through and we have had some beautifully sunny days despite lots of rain – still I suppose it’s good for the garden.

Knutsford is to launch it’s own “Adopt a Shop” scheme. Originally promoted by Mary Portas in Dublin the initiative caught the eye of Knutsford Hosts Founder Sarah Flannery. The initiative aims to get local people really championing their favourite Knutsford shop and making a conscious effort to support and recommend them to everyone using social media. With so many businesses suddenly finding themselves thrust into the world of online trading this seems like a great way of encouraging more people to shop local and support local businesses. Read all about it and how you can adopt a shop on page 9. If you know of a local business that could benefit from some cost effective local advertising please show them the directory and ask them to get in touch. In the meantime stay safe and well and let’s look forward to a brighter spring.

Knutsford is to launch its own Adopt a Shop Scheme after seeing it promoted by High Street guru Mary Portas, and its success in Dublin, and other UK towns. The scheme sees residents champion their three favourite local shops – shops that make their town special and which if they were to close would be most missed. Using the #adoptaKNUTSFORDshop hashtag they commit to spending money in their adopted shops, talk about them, and promote them via social media and amongst their friends and family. They also ask three friends to do the same and help the network of adopters grow. Some examples of what people can do are: • Tweet a selfie outside your adopted shops • Share a photo of your latest haul • Share a video talking about what you most love about them The scheme caught the eye of Sarah Flannery, founder of local volunteer group Knutsford Hosts. Sarah said, “Many communities are trying to support their local economy and when I heard about this initiative which started in Dublin, I thought it could be brilliant for Knutsford. We’re all doing much more online now, and this is a really innovative way for residents to support the businesses that are most dear to them and for businesses to engage online with their customers. We all have our favourites; #AdoptaKnutsfordShop simply lets us tell everyone! It’s wonderful to see the Town Council support the idea. Making a conscious effort to give our favourite businesses

our support will not only help them keep their virtual doors open, it’ll give us all some pleasure to champion our favourites.” Knutsford Lions are also on board, Paul Buttrick said, “We heard about the #AdoptaKnutsfordShop initiative at our meeting, Knutsford Lions fully support anything that helps bring back vibrant life to our town after the pandemic.” Local resident and Radios 2 and 6 DJ, Mark Radcliffe is also on board saying, “During lockdown there have been many local businesses that have provided a lifeline, a friendly face and a valuable service. This scheme is a chance to show the people who work there how much we appreciate their resilience and good humour. The challenges faced in retail have made us all focus more on our local high street and we have learned afresh not to take it for granted and to show our support and thanks for the people keeping those establishments up and running’. Sandra Curties, Town Centre and Marketing Officer at Knutsford Town Council, said, “We are always looking at ways of promoting our local shops and never more so than at present. When Sarah contacted us about the scheme, it was obviously one we knew we and our community could champion. We will start by working with members of the Knutsford Hosts and Knutsford Lions, hoping to get #AdoptaKnutsfordShop trending on social media, mentions in the local press and maybe some live videos!” If anyone wishes to take part in the scheme, please contact Sandra.curties@ knutsfordtowncouncil.gov.uk

Sometimes we just can’t face a whole novel or autobiography. With these books, you can dip in and out whenever you have a spare five minutes. Back to Nature: How to Love Life and Save It – Chris Packham and Megan McCubbin Whether you’re an avid nature lover and wondering how to stop the catastrophic decline in biodiversity, or you’re feeling disconnected from the wild and want to reap the benefits of it once again, this is a great book to help you. There are lots of interesting titbits to digest over a coffee (ever wondered how trees communicate?) and plenty of ideas for how to take action. Dear NHS: 100 Stories to Say Thank You – Adam Kay Adam Kay brings us a series of essays and musings from a range of household names, from Malala Yousafzai to Dame Julie Walters and Johnny Vegas. Each tale is about how the NHS has stepped in to help the writer. There’s a story of a suspected heart attack that turned out to be trapped wind, several about household accidents (often involving kitchen knives) and plenty of sentimental stories to boot. Plus, all profits go to charity. Encounters: A Photographic Journey – Levison Wood Award-winning reportage photographer Levison Wood has travelled to more than 100 countries over the last ten years. Encounters brings together 140 of his images, along with text about each one. You’ll meet a young shepherd girl in Ethiopia, resourceful teenagers in the Congo, stranded nomads, fishermen in Yemen and families surviving in war-torn regions. The Repair Shop: Tales from the Workshop of Dreams If you love the TV series about expert craftspeople restoring much loved family heirlooms, you won’t want to miss the accompanying book. It goes into more detail about some of the most interesting items shown in the series, from a rusty miner’s helmet to a circus performer’s dress. It’s the book version of a mug of tea and hot buttered crumpet. Toksvig’s Almanac 2021 – Sandi Toksvig Fancy ‘An Eclectic Meander Through the Historical Year’? The main focus is on women that have been all but forgotten. There’s Begum Samru – an Indian dancer who led an army of mercenaries, Ida B. Wells – an activist and suffragist who co-founded the largest civil rights organisation in the United States, and Annette Kellerman, whose stunts including diving from 60 feet into a pool of crocodiles. There are also poems, trivia and other fascinating snippets. Sapiens: A Graphic Novel – Yuval Noah Harari et al. The original Sapiens is fascinating, but there’s an awful lot of information to take in. If you’re interested in the origin of humans, but want something a little easier to digest, try this instead. It’s the first volume in a graphic-novel adaptation of the global bestseller. Full-colour illustrations and straightforward text take the reader on a journey from the very birth of humankind. It’s absorbing, suitable for older children as well as adults and has a good spattering of humour throughout.

HORSE RACING IN KNUTSFORD

Print courtesy of Fred McDowell

A

ccording to official records, Chester is the oldest racecourse still in use in England dating, as it does, from the early 16th century. Knutsford’s racecourse was established more than a century later at the time of the accession of Charles 11, who promoted the sport. Knutsford benefited economically from the racecourse as it brought to the town significant wealth and prestige. This most popular of sports attracted aristocrats and gentry who vied with each other to own the best horses and, in its hey-day, the course rivalled that of Chester. In 1791, it was noted that ‘the annual race meeting at Knutsford is remarkable for being honoured with a more brilliant assemblage of nobility and gentry, than any other in the country; not excepting even Chester’. And the Macclesfield Courier for 1819 reported that ‘the races were very numerously and fashionably attended … from the respectable manner in which the meeting is supported it is expected to become the most fashionable in the kingdom’. The prize money on offer gives further indication as to the importance of the meeting and its success: in 1729, a Plate of 20 guineas was awarded. A race card from 1818 found behind an old fireplace at Heath House on Gaskell Avenue details four races, one of which, the Knutsford Gold Cup, was run over 3 miles with a first prize of 100 guineas. The names of the owners include Lords Grey, Derby, Stanford and Grosvenor, Sir T Stanley and Sir JG Egerton.

Please mention

It was the Egertons of Tatton who permitted horse racing on the Heath and names like Ladies Mile and Racecourse Road, which survive today, show the extent of the 19th century track which was longer than the original. The area today, of course, is a remnant of what was once extensive heathland. Until 1836, the Races were controlled and financed by County families and race days were lively affairs by all accounts – as many as 24 coaches and four and the town ‘inundated with shows and showmen ...’ . In 1832, a local paper reported ‘the number of gamblers, swindlers and pickpockets … amounted, it is said, to 1000’. In later years, townspeople became involved in the management and funding of the course and, later still, the whole enterprise was taken over by a Race Company. Matters deteriorated with the coming of the railway in the 1860s; the races were advertised and special trains brought people from further afield like Stockport and Manchester but the influx of newcomers was not easily absorbed. Whereas in the first half of the 19th century the races retained ‘something of their old prestige and dashing equipages … the beau ideal of aristocratic magnificence …’, in later years the gentry lost interest. Lord Egerton withdrew his permission to use the Heath and the last race was run in 1873. The grandstand was taken down and the whole area enclosed in 1887. www.knutsfordheritage.co.uk

Although autumn is viewed as the best time for planting, trees, shrubs, climbers or herbaceous plants will have enough time to get established if planted now. Plan a shopping trip to fill garden spaces with colour, shape or perfume.

inches wider than the root ball all round, and fork the base and sides of the hole over thoroughly, especially in clay – where you should prepare the soil with a fork, as this causes less compaction of the soil than using a spade.

Start by digging or forking the soil over and removing pernicious weeds or debris. Measure the available spaces so that the chosen plant does not outgrow its new home too quickly, and make a note of how sunny or shaded the spot is.

If the soil is either heavy clay or extremely light and sandy, dig a bigger hole, gradually incorporating more of the ‘natural’ soil into the compost or planting mix as you near the sides of the hole.

There should be a good selection of shrubs to choose from right now that will provide springtime colour – perhaps a flowering currant with flower trusses in red or pink, a star magnolia, Magnolia stellate, with white or palest pink star-shaped flowers, or, if you have space, an amelanchier, great value because they have tiny, very pretty white flowers with foliage in fiery shades come autumn. On acidic soils or in a good-sized pot of ericaceous compost, camellias perform well and their large flowers in reds, pinks, yellows and white look great. There is also Exochorda macrantha, ‘The Bride’, with delightful arching stems studded with tiny white flowers; the list goes on and on.

Before planting, remove the pot and firmly tease out the roots – soaking the root ball in a bucket of water for an hour or two helps if they are quite congested and is essential for the plant to get properly established. Prune out any really large, woody roots encircling the root ball to release the remainder of the roots.

Plant your purchases as soon as possible. Dig a good-sized hole for each, making it several

The plant should be planted at the same depth that it was in its pot, with just the roots, and no part of the stem, below ground level. Watering in helps settle the soil around the fine roots, even if it is fairly moist. Finally, stand back and check the stem is upright. Make a note of the plant’s precise name and details, or remove the label and keep it somewhere safe, so you know how to look after your plant and how big it may grow!

If you rarely think about where your food comes from, you’re not alone, but buying food that’s both in season and locally produced is the most environmentally friendly way to eat. What’s the best way of lessening the environmental impact of our shopping? Supermarkets usually print their produce’s country of origin, but shopping at a local farm shop or market is the best place to start. By doing so you’ll support local farmers, while also making sure that the food you’re buying hasn’t crossed continents to reach your plate.

a number of fantastic cookbooks and apps out there that can help you plan your meals. If you’re not used to cooking new dishes, stick to simple recipes like soups and stews to begin with. If you have green fingers you could also try growing your own vegetables. Even if you don’t have a garden, many foods like lettuces and herbs can happily grow indoors all year round.

Eat Seasonally edit

Research is paramount to finding out which fruits, vegetables and even meats are in season. Luckily, the internet is filled with information and there are

Please mention

Bananas, avocados and mangoes are just a few examples of foods to avoid or at least cut down on. They always have to be imported and they also need a lot of water and pesticides to grow in industrial quantities. While cutting out all of your favourite foods might be unrealistic, if we all filled our fridges a little more carefully, it really could make a world of difference.
