What’s it like to...run a shoe shop? 11 year old Freya from Knutsford interviews Sally Feeke who owns Zapatos on Regent Street, Knutsford Why did you call your shop Zapatos?

Zapatos is Spanish for shoes and at the time I was setting up the business, my grandfather sadly passed away and he lived in Spain, so it was a nod to him plus we also stock quite a few Spanish brands.

Why did you choose to sell shoes?

I just love them….. and I think lots of women love shoes too. I have loved shoes from a young age from going shopping with mum every Saturday and I had my first pair of Jimmy Choos for my 18th birthday. I think a pair of shoes can really make an outfit it. Ladies and shoes have a special relationship whereas men tend to only buy shoes if they really have to. Ladies buy shoes to help them feel good about themselves. Some will even be quite sneaky and ask for a plain bag and pay in cash so there’s no evidence they have been spending money on shoes!

Do you sell anything else in your shop?

Yes we sell umbrellas, handbags, hats, scarves, jewellery, gloves, slippers, socks and tights …all the things to finish off an outfit. My favourite thing has to be our umbrellas which are amazing …you can’t get them anywhere else. Everyone is shocked when you open them up and inside there is something different like beautiful peacock feathers, or flowers in pinks and blues which you just don’t expect.

Does anything fly off the shelf?

We have straw summer hats that you can roll up and put in your suitcase; they fly out of the door as soon as they are in.

Why did you choose Knutsford to set up in?

I moved to Knutsford years ago and as I was walking around I noticed there wasn’t a nice shoe shop selling really stylish shoes. All the women in Knutsford were very lovely and stylish, but it felt like there was something missing.

How do you decide which shoes you sell?

We go to visit a showroom in London that has hundreds of pairs of shoes and from all of those I have to select which I will stock in the shop. It’s the hardest but the best part of the shop. I have learnt

over the years what my customers are looking for, what fits them well and which brands offer the good quality I’m looking for.

How do you go about designing shoes?

I think about what is in fashion at the time and marry it with knowing my customers – it’s got to be fashionable and fit. Last season cowboy boots were in.

What’s your favourite part of your job?

Being your own boss and caring about what you do. You wake up in the morning and you want to go to work as you are doing something you really enjoy and love.

What’s the most challenging part??

Day to day things like making sure you have the right staff who treat the customer like you would. Also, you don’t come home and switch off from work as the pressure is on your shoulders to make it work and keep the business going.

I’d love a pair of your shoes what sizes do they come in?

In ladies shoes they come in from size 3 to size 8. Five years ago the average was 4.5 but now it is size 6.5!

That’s good, they’ll fit me then… I’m size 4! Please mention

A VALENTINE’S MESSAGE AND A STORY OF RECONNECTION Following the holiday season and moving into the final winter month, I am reminded of the nature and importance of all our relationships. A lot of relationships end or become strained during the festive season, yet many friendships and relationships are rekindled too. A few years back I was invited to talk on radio Derby about valentines and the impact on couples and also thinking about the wider nature of all our human relationships. It was a very special interview for me as I was able to highlight the importance of all our relationships. I told the story of an enduring friendship that had lasted almost 30 years. This was my friendship with my pen pal from the Netherlands. At the time I was unaware she was listening in to the show and I talked about the fact that we had never met although we had kept in touch and how I would love to meet her one day. She got in touch with the radio show and we arranged to meet on air! Aleena Naylor was the radio host and we were going to meet that summer and the meeting would be recorded and shared with the radio listeners. Sadly that meeting was not to be, my friend had become seriously ill and we lost touch- I thought I had lost her forever. I missed our connection terribly and prayed for the day we would be reconnected.

A few years past, I never gave up hope, and then one day I got an email.... after almost 40 years, the day finally arrived, and we met. The relationship is so precious to me that distance does not keep our connection apart and we are in regular contact. Why I am telling this story? Because its valentines again and a good reminder to think of all of the people we love in our lives and the very precious nature of human connection. I think the most important relationship we have is with our self. Mindful self-compassion practice and teaching has taught me so much about how we converse with ourselves and the impact this has on all relationships with others. So, this is a good time to revisit your new years’ resolutions and look towards being kinder to yourself. One way to do this is by connecting with friends and family. Regularly connecting with others is proven to be beneficial to our emotional wellbeing as we are social creatures. So why not take some time this month to get in touch with old friends or commit to meeting with friends more regularly.

KNUTSFORD BEER FESTIVAL 2020 BACK AT THE COURTHOUSE FOR 2ND YEAR

In 2019, the Knutsford Beer Festival saw more than 1,000 people come through the doors to sample craft beer, artisan gin, cider, wine and Prosecco – raising £10,000 for charity in the process. An equal split of £4,500 each went to Children’s Adventure Farm Trust and Knutsford Royal May Day while £1,000 was invested in the festival’s community fund. The fund provides small grants of up to £200 for Knutsford-based community groups and small charities. The organisers have also revealed that Ben Selby, beer advisor for Dexter & Jones, will be taking over as the festival’s beer expert for 2020. The job will see him source all the beer for the event. He is promising more of a focus on craft beer in both the keg and cask offering and a wider choice to reflect the growing number of styles. Ben said: “I’m really looking forward to getting involved with the Knutsford Beer Festival next year.

KNUTSFORD Beer Festival returns in April with its biggest selection of beers to date. Following the success of last year’s festival, the charity event will be back at the Courthouse in central Knutsford to raise money for the Toy Appeal.

“The beer list at the event keeps getting better and better each year, so I’m honoured to be asked to help carry on the great work the team has done in the past. “My focus is curating a beer list that will put Knutsford Beer Festival on the beer map, while also doing it for a great cause.” Knutsford Beer Festival tickets cost £10 which pays for entry, plus a tasting glass, for one of the sessions at The Courthouse between April 23 and 25. Knutsford Beer Festival takes place from April 23 to 25 with masterclasses taking place during the Saturday afternoon session. Visit knutsfordbeerfestival.org.uk

THE REAL TASTE OF SPAIN …..IN KNUTSFORD

E

vuna opened its doors in Knutsford in 2017 but the history of Evuna goes back much further than that. We spoke to founder, Jane Dowler, about what makes Evuna unique.

How did you get into the restaurant business? Fifteen years ago, my Mum, Frances, asked me if I wanted to leave my marketing career to assist her and Manuel Evuna, a wine importer, in starting Evuna a Spanish restaurant with a difference specialising in importing exclusive world class wines from family run vineyards. I’d always been particularly interested in wine, so I quit my job as Account Director with Digital Marketing agency Amaze, packed my suitcase and moved to a vineyard in La Mancha (central Spain) for a month to learn how it all worked.

Since then I take regular trips to Spain honing my palate with some of the most knowledgeable wine makers in the industry. All our wines come from family run vineyards, with generation after generation of wine-making expertise. To make good wines, of course it’s necessary to have good soils, good climate and the latest technology, but we also need the human touch, the tradition and knowledge. This is something the small bodegas I deal with absolutely understand. My producers have seen from childhood how their grandfather, uncle, father have a deep relationship with the vines that belonged to family for generations and this shows in the quality of the wine, the elegance and the drinkability of them. This is what makes them so great. This is Evuna’s passion. How do you think things have things changed since you started Evuna? Fifteen years ago, the world of Spanish wines consisted of Rioja and Sherry to us Brits, but today it’s so much more than this. I am continuously overwhelmed with the diversity of its viticulture, with over 120 denominations of origin and over 100 types of indigenous grapes. My mission is to offer the finest wines in Spain at a great price as unlike many other Spanish restaurants in the UK we import ourselves directly from the vineyard . Over the last 15 years I have personally selected all 6,000 bottles we serve each month across our

So in Spain you immersed yourself in the wine making process and learned all you could? Yes. It was harvest time when I arrived at Portillejo, the Bodega 100 miles south of Madrid. I spent days living and breathing wine, crushing the grapes, tasting the must (juice) before it was fermented and then touring other vineyards and vinotecas (wine bars) in my spare time. A month with the wine maker, tasting and learning, and I knew I’d found my passion.

Once dominated by the fabulous Tempranillo our new regions and wineries are building their reputation with varieties such as Mencía, Garnacha, Bobal, Callet, Cariñena, Monastrell, Listán, Prieto Picudo, as well as indigenous French Varieties. Evuna isn’t just wine though is it? Tell us what people can expect from your food menu. We are keen to remain strongly independent, encouraging creativity within each branch from our chefs. The team is lead by group executive chef Gustavo Serrano, from Malaga, who is based between Altrincham and Knutsford. He trained at the High Gastronomy school of Sevilla, and has achieved two bachelor degrees as a Master chef at Lebrija University and Barcelona university for Contemporary High Cuisine. He sets the direction for our staple tapas such as Albondigas, Calamares, and of course Bravas, and the branch head chefs adopt a monthly focus of regional specials that showcase more elegant tapas using modern fusion techniques. These include dishes like : sauté chicken and chorizo with honey glaze and migas, grilled octopus with pipirrana salad and lemon

HELENA SWANWICK

A

a deliberately overlooked figure

roll-call of Knutsford’s remarkable residents rarely features the name of Helena Swanwick, pacifist and notable feminist who, after her marriage, lived at Annandale on the Mobberley Road.

She was born in Munich in 1864, the only daughter of Osbert Sickert and sister of the artist, Walter Sickert. The family moved to England in 1868, settling eventually in Notting Hill where they knew William Morris and Edward Burne Jones. Helena attended Notting Hill High School; she excelled and rebelled, principally against her parents: ‘A boy might be a person but not a girl … all my brothers had rights as a person, not I’. Not for nothing had she read John Stuart Mill’s work, ‘The Subjugation of the Rights of Women’. After Cambridge in the 1880s and marriage to the scholar, Frederick Swanwick, she settled in Knutsford in 1900, from where Frederick could commute to work as a Maths lecturer at Manchester University. It is Helena’s CV, though, which places her amongst the most scholarly and pioneering women of her day. Inspired by Christabel Pankhurst, she joined the North of England Suffrage Society and in 1906, the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies where she was on the Executive Committee, until resigning in 1915 over Millicent Fawcett’s refusal to argue against World War 1. In 1908, she had founded her own organisation, campaigning relentlessly across England and Scotland. Knutsford was slow to take up the cause of women’s suffrage and it was not until 1907 that a local branch of the Manchester Society was formed with Helena Swanwick (Annandale) and Miss D. Hoffman (Hazelhurst, Glebelands Road) as its secretaries. During the campaign, Cheshire was heavily influenced by Manchester and it was CP Scott, editor of the highly regarded Manchester Guardian, who gave these suffrage organisations publicity and access to sympathetic politicians at Westminster. As a pioneering Guardian journalist for nearly four decades and a friend of Scott’s, Helena was uniquely placed to further ‘the Cause’ when Scott cycled over to Knutsford at weekends to visit her and Frederick.

Please mention

On the international stage, she campaigned for a negotiated peace (1914 -18). She was a delegate for the League of Nations and considered a pioneer in the field of international relations where her scholarship was a precursor to the development of international law. In 1931, she was appointed to the Order of the Companion of Honour. Helena Swanwick died in the summer of 1939 from a drugs’ overdose at her home in Maidenhead, Berkshire. It has been suggested that she is ‘a deliberately overlooked figure’ not so much because of her work for women’s suffrage but for her vehement opposition to war and, perhaps more tellingly, her criticism of ‘the political forces which led to such carnage’. However, her name is among the thirty on the plinth of Millicent Fawcett’s statue which was unveiled in Parliament Square in April 2018. www.knutsfordheritage.co.uk

GROW TURNS 21 BUT NEEDS YOUR HELP Our local charity KnutsfordGROW.org.uk has been helping frail and disabled Knutsford residents with their gardens since 1999 and has its 21st birthday this year. GROW is a little different as our ‘workforce’ of volunteers are made up of both able-bodied and disabled gardeners. We’re governed by a board of Trustees but sadly three of them resigned recently for unrelated personal reasons. That’s where you may be able to help. Could you be one of GROW’s new trustees? It takes on average 7 hours a month mostly at a times of your own choosing at home on your own PC. Supportive free training offered if required. If you’d like to find out more about what Knutsford GROW does and especially if you’d like to find out about this volunteering opportunity please see our website www.KnutsfordGROW.org.uk and click on news item GROW is Recruiting.

Seeking a new challenge in this new decade? Why not consider helping your community via GROW? If you’d prefer a chat first please email Secretary@ KnutsfordGrow.org.uk Neil Forbes Trustee & Secretary Knutsford GROW www.knutsfordgrow.org.uk 1091285
