Teacher’s Appreciation Sunday – SSBC

To all educators,

On behalf of the Saint Smyrna Baptist Church family, it is my sincere honor to extend heartfelt gratitude to each of you. As shepherd of this house, I recognize the immeasurable value that teachers bring not only to the classroom, but to our entire community. You are cultivators of knowledge, builders of character, and vessels of hope.

Your work is more than a profession it is a calling. Every day, you inspire hearts, educate minds, and empower future leaders. You do so with passion, grace, and resilience, even when the world does not always give you the honor you deserve.

Today, we pause to recognize your hard work, to celebrate your dedication, and to let you know that your labor is not in vain. May this small gesture of appreciation be a reminder that you are seen, valued, and deeply loved.

Thank you for doing what many could not, and for continuing to pour into others—evenwhenyou’rerunningon empty.

May God continue to bless you as you Inspire. Educate. Empower.

With deepest respect and appreciation,

Honorees

Lashonna Drayton

I am proud to say my family is from Georgia, and I was raised by a mom with a strong work ethic.. My mom often reminds me, “ Nothing beats a failure, but one who does not try.” which has always been a guiding principle in my life.

The person who has made the biggest impact on my life is my mother. She has faced many obstacles but has always triumphed with grace, and she continues to be my guide.

I believed I wanted to be a teacher from the time I received a toy box for Christmas with a chalkboard on it. I would teach my dolls, teddy bears, and little brother long before I realized that my dream would come to life.

One of my favorite pastimes was reading historical books, particularly those centered around the Civil Rights Movement. Some of my fondest memories from middle school include being named homeroom queen, cheering on my school as part of the cheerleading team, and taking dance classes which I absolutely loved. While in high school, I was active in track and field.

In college, I completed two internships at popular radio stations in Atlanta, which I thoroughly enjoyed. However, life had other plans, and I knew that my calling was to be in the classroom. That is why every time I tried to step out of line with God’s will, He would shut it down and send me to work with kids.

I graduated from Georgia State University with a major in British Literature and a minor in Communications. Later, I earned my Masters in the Art of Teaching with an emphasis on Language Arts from Lagrange College, and began my teaching career in the state of Alabama. So for eleven years, I would drive from Newnan to Alabama to work with students in title one areas.

My favorite quote is by Jackie Robinson where he says, except in the impact it has on other lives.” I pray that I live up to this quote for the rest of my life.

I went on to pursue degrees in Mathematics and Secondary Education. I earned a B.S. degree in Mathematics from Gordon State University, a B.S. degree in Mathematics from Lagrange College, A Master’s degree, and Specialist’s degree in Secondary Education from Columbus State University.
