Dear Readers,
As February ushers in an air of love and renewal, it also brings opportunities to celebrate the remarkable milestones shaping the Maldives’ tourism and hospitality industry. This edition of Islandchief highlights three transformative developments that showcase our nation’s relentless pursuit of excellence.

Meanwhile, the Maldives Marine Expo is gearing up for its milestone 10th edition. This annual event not only celebrates advancements in marine products and services but also underscores the sustainability and growth of our marine industry—an integral pillar of the Maldivian way of life.

Their insights offer a roadmap to unlocking the full potential of the Maldives as a destination.
At Islandchief, we are proud to spotlight these stories of ambition, creativity, and progress. As February unfolds, let the warmth of love and innovation inspire your days. Here’s to a month filled with cherished moments and the promise of spring just around the corner.
Until next time, The Islandchief Team

Shark Tank is a relatively new but highly popular dive site in Malé Atoll, renowned for its shark diving experiences. Divers can encounter up to seven species of sharks, including Tiger Sharks, Bull Sharks, and Great Hammerheads, with occasional sightings of Silvertip, Whitetip Reef, and Nurse Sharks. The site also features large groups of stingrays and unique species like Bowmouth Guitarfish.
Due to its depth (5m–30m) and sometimes murky waters, this dive site is recommended only for advanced open water divers. Proper behavior is essential when diving with the large predators found here.

Manta Air, the fastest growing airline in the Maldives, is setting its sights on a transformative 2025. Today, the airline celebrated the arrival of its first DHC-6 Twin Otter seaplane for 2025, marking a significant milestone in its journey toward growth and excellence. The DHC-6 Twin Otter aircraft, equipped with the advanced Garmin G950 NXi integrated flight deck avionics and weather radar, underscores Manta Air’s unwavering commitment to delivering exceptional service.
“The arrival of our newest seaplane is a testament to Manta Air’s dedication to raising the bar for air travel in the Maldives,” said Mr. Mohamed Khaleel, CEO of Manta Air. “We are proud to take this step forward in enhancing our fleet and services to better serve our valued customers. Our commitment to excellence drives us to continuously
improve and innovate. We are dedicated to expanding the fleet further this year to the services we deliver to our customers.”
Manta Air plans to welcome another DHC-6 Twin Otter seaplane by the end of January, with three additional aircraft slated to join its fleet by the third quarter of 2025. These expansions are designed to meet the growing demand for premium air transport services in the Maldives, further solidifying Manta Air’s position as the fastest-growing airline in the region.
Since its launch in 2019, Manta Air has grown steadily, serving over 35 resorts across the Maldives with both seaplane and ATR domestic operations.
The addition of these new aircraft
reflects Manta Air’s dedication to maintaining the highest standards of service while building the capacity needed to support its expanding
operations. With a focus on customer-centric growth and innovation, the airline is well-positioned to achieve its ambitious goals for 2025 and beyond.
Maldivian Airlines, the national carrier of the Maldives, has successfully launched its inaugural flights from Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu, marking a major milestone in its expansion into the Chinese market. These new direct routes strengthen connectivity between the Maldives and China, one of the country’s largest tourism source markets.
To celebrate the occasion, Maldivian honored its first three check-in passengers from both Beijing and Chengdu with return tickets, exclusive holiday packages sponsored by Cora Cora Maldives and Hideaway Beach Resort, and A330 aircraft models. The
airline expressed gratitude to all passengers and partners for making these moments truly memorable.
The launch of these new routes reinforces the Maldives’ position as a premier travel destination for Chinese tourists, offering seamless access to the island paradise. As part of the inaugural celebrations, Maldivian introduced special promotional fares, including an attractive return ticket price of USD 788 for the Malé-Beijing route, along with a generous 40 kg baggage allowance.
China remains a key focus in Maldivian’s long-term strategy, given its significant contribution to Maldives tourism. With
the introduction of direct flights from three major Chinese cities, Maldivian aims to further strengthen economic, cultural, and tourism ties between the two nations, making travel to the Maldives more convenient than ever.
The service is the result of Maldivian introducing its first wide-body operations with the arrival of the Airbus A330-200 this January 2025. This historic milestone marks a significant expansion for the airline, which began its journey in 2000 with a modest fleet of two aircraft. At the special event held at Velana International Airport to celebrate this landmark achievement, the President
of the Maldives, His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, graced the occasion with his presence along with the Vice President, Hussain Mohamed Latheef, several government dignitaries, and senior officials. The arrival of the Airbus A330-200 marks a historic milestone for Maldivian, the national airline of the Maldives, as it embarks on its first wide-body operations.
This addition to the airline’s fleet marks a significant milestone in its 25th year of service, expanding its capacity to connect the Maldives with more international destinations and travellers worldwide.

This remarkable collection, featuring over 100 paintings by acclaimed Maldivian artist Ahmed Nazim (Nazimbe), captures his transition from oil to watercolor and his contemplative maritime storytelling. At Suvaasthi Gallery, selected works from this celebrated exhibition will be displayed from January 7 to 21, 2025, marking Moo Ge’s debut as a creative sanctuary for exploration and inspiration.
Recognising the urgent plight of coral reefs in the Maldives and around the world, the Soneva Foundation Coral Restoration programme convened a landmark dialogue from January 9 to 12, 2025, at Soneva Fushi in the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The event brought together leading coral scientists, marine conservationists and innovative finance experts to chart transformative solutions for reef restoration and regeneration on a global scale.
Co-facilitated by Professor Callum Roberts from the University of Exeter and Karen Sack, Executive Director of the Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance (ORRAA), the three-day Soneva Dialogue on Coral Reef Restoration and Resilience explored the impact of climate change on coral ecosystems and highlighted groundbreaking restoration techniques being trialled at Soneva Fushi and beyond.
The Dialogue culminated in a joint declaration, emphasising the critical need for swift and large-scale action. International experts proposed innovative financial mechanisms, ranging from blue bonds to insurance models, to unlock the resources necessary for coral reef regeneration. The declaration underscored that without bold interventions, the world risks losing the majority of its tropical coral reefs within decades.
Professor Callum Roberts commented:
“Scientific research and practical experience tell us that now is the time for a shift in emphasis from restoration to regeneration, pairing resourceintensive local projects with large-scale ocean management and protection to promote reef recovery and resilience. Coral restoration has been largely backward-looking, aiming to put back what has been lost. It must now pivot to being future-focussed, searching for and developing mixes of corals and other marine life that will keep reefs functional and resilient under changed future conditions.”
The ORRAA’s Karen Sack said: “Corals are in crisis worldwide, and if we are to have any chance of saving reefs at any scale we must rapidly advance regeneration efforts. This requires the urgent scaling up of finance to fund
these vital natural treasures. If we want coral reefs to survive, we are going to have to find novel ways to pay for them. The ORRAA looks forward to working with our members, partners and the scientific community to take the ideas developed at the Soneva Dialogue forward.”
The Soneva Foundation Coral Restoration programme’s lead scientist Dr Johanna Leonhardt added: “As a coral biologist, I see the tragic impacts of marine heatwaves first-hand with bleaching leading to substantial coral degradation here in the Maldives. However, we are not about to give up on this paramount ecosystem – we have a coral spawning lab, outplanting efforts and coral nurseries, and are fully focused on regenerating resilient corals so that they are not lost forever.”
The Soneva Dialogue declaration reaffirms that in recent years reefs around the world have lost half their living coral cover, and failing to limit global warming to 1.5°Celcius will accelerate this loss. However, it also offers hope, calling for bold and innovative approaches to sustain reef resilience in the face of climate threats. Financing on a scale never before attempted will be vital to regenerating these invaluable ecosystems.

The Government of Maldives has taken a significant bold step towards the conservation of Whale Sharks (Fehurihi) once again with the strict reinforcement of propeller guards in excursion boats.
“Sometimes, over 100 tourists swim after a single whale shark; with no set policy. Even speedboats venture into this area,” the Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy Mr. Thoriq Ibrahim noted. The Minister said this protocol will be implemented within the next three months. Special speedboats will be active in areas with whale shark activity and monitor vessels that take tourists to these sites.
Additionally, the new regulation requiring propeller guards will be expanded to areas beyond South-Ari Marine Park (SAMPA) where whale shark activity is observed. The SAMPA is a world-renowned area, and the most significant feature of this area is that Whale Sharks can be seen here throughout the year. The protocol must be followed in all these areas and will be in effect within the next three months.
"By mandating propeller guards, we are taking a significant step towards
ensuring the safety of both whale sharks and those who admire them. This measure reflects our commitment to sustainable tourism and the preservation of our marine environment." added, CEO & MD of Visit Maldives Ibrahim Shiuree.
Last year, the Maldives government came up with a legal framework to protect whale sharks and their natural habitat. The policies include precautions that must be taken in interacting with these creatures and how to manage an injured or unwell whale shark. As per this policy, a distance of 250 meters around a whale shark is considered a contact zone, where only three vessels can be active at a time. While in these zones, the speed of the vessels must not exceed 5 knots per hour, and when in the vicinity of a whale shark, the speed must not exceed 2 knots per hour.
With these new regulations, the Maldives continues to lead in marine conservation efforts, ensuring that future generations can appreciate the beauty of these gentle giants not only enhancing the experience for tourists interacting with whale sharks in the Maldives but also safeguarding the vital ecosystem that supports whale sharks in their natural habitat.

As per the latest Tourism Master Plan published, around 40% of international visitor stays were concentrated in Kaafu Atoll and the Greater Malé Region, a trend likely consistent in recent years. What innovative approaches can be adopted to promote tourism and increase visitor engagement in the northern and southern atolls of the Maldives?
Ibrahim Nizam Tourism Consultant & Brand Strategist
To promote tourism in the northern and southern atolls of the Maldives, we should create experiences unique to each region and atoll. It could be culture and historical tourism, visiting protected and conserved areas, adventure sports(marine and land-based), gastronomy, and long-stay options for knowmad travelers.
Surfing and sport-fishing destinations in faraway atolls could also be promoted as less visited areas with more natural beauty within the Maldives. South Huvadhoo is an excellent spot for surfing and diving, while Vaavu Atoll is popular among sport-fishing clients.
Addu can be promoted for land-based adventure sports, deep-sea fishing, and diving. Above all, easy and cost-e ective ways to travel to faraway atolls and islands are essential for enhancing tourism services in islands in the north and south of the Maldives.
Mohamed Bassam Adam
COO
Lets Go Maldives | Air Arabia GSA
"The Maldives is globally renowned, yet most visitors remain within Kaafu Atoll. To unlock the full potential of our northern and southern atolls, we must enhance direct international connectivity, promote unique cultural and nature-based experiences, and refine our marketing strategies. Luxury yachting, eco-resorts, and heritage tourism can diversify our o erings, ensuring sustainable growth while preserving our identity. A holistic approach—blending infrastructure, storytelling, and strategic partnerships—will drive a more balanced tourism landscape across all atolls."
Mohamed Ali (Bunny) Managing Director In Maldives
We should not prioritize Malé Atoll for tourism growth. Right now, many artificial islands are being developed near Malé, but they do not represent the real Maldives. The true beauty of our country lies in the northern and southern atolls, where we already have stunning islands and operational resorts. The government must actively encourage tourism expansion across the entire Maldives by improving airport services, increasing airline connectivity, and ensuring more a ordable travel options. This will help distribute tourism more evenly and showcase the authentic Maldives experience.
Assad Riza
Business Development Manager
Villa Travels
To fix this issue, the government should stop allowing new resorts in the Malé region and instead encourage big international brands to invest in the northern and southern Maldives. O ering more tax breaks and incentives could help attract investors. At the same time, marketing needs to improve—there are over a billion travelers worldwide, yet the Maldives only gets 2 million visitors a year. A bigger marketing budget and smarter campaigns could help bring more tourists to less-developed areas.
The Maldives also needs to o er more than just beaches and diving. To attract di erent kinds of travelers, the country could develop cruise tourism in Addu, create an island for film production, or even build a football training camp for top clubs. Better airports and direct flights are also needed to make travel easier. Finally, it’s worth asking if tourism should be the only focus for these regions—why not explore other industries, like a major shipping port in the north?
Ahmed Hamza Deputy Managing Director AAA & Trading Company Pvt Ltd
Repeat travelers often want to explore new places, which helps di erent regions grow. We should work on improving international flights to Addu and Hanimaadhoo.
Lowering taxes in the far south and north could help businesses compete fairly. MMPRC should also focus more on promoting these areas.
Abdulla
Salih
Managing Director Damas
I believe we should look into below possibilities:
1. Cheaper, faster, and more convenient transportation to travel to other atolls from Malé.
2. Concessions for developers in other atolls compared to Malé, such as taxes, GST credits, etc.
3. Increased government funding for establishing integrated townships in other atolls.
4. Creation of an active and vibrant residential model for foreigners in other atolls, including land registration and mortgages.
