Publisher’s Note

Dear Readers,

As we turn the pages into April, the Maldivian real estate and hospitality landscape continues to be shaped by innovation and ambition. Leading the way is Renaatus, which has officially launched sales for its Irumathi Apartments in Hulhumalé—an architectural statement poised for completion by December 2026. Already 20% complete, this visionary project, unveiled during a special iftar gathering, introduces a first-of-its-kind feature to the Maldives: dedicated parking for every residence. With sustainability, design, and urban convenience at its core, Irumathi is set to redefine modern island living.

In the realm of hospitality, OLBU Nature Helengeli by SENTIDO recently hosted an immersive three-day culinary showcase that brought together European expertise and Maldivian flavors. International chefs collaborated with local talent to craft a gastronomic experience that delighted guests and empowered associates through creative training—underscoring how global partnerships can elevate local experiences.

This month’s cover story spotlights a compelling conversation with Ibrahim Iyas, Managing Director of Island Aviation Services Ltd (IASL). With over two decades in the aviation industry—15 of them at IASL—Iyas offers insight into Maldivian’s transformation under his leadership. From the strategic introduction of the Airbus A330-200 for long-haul connectivity to the shift towards an all-ATR fleet for domestic efficiency, his roadmap blends sustainability with enhanced passenger experience. In our interview, he also discusses route expansions, partnerships with MMPRC, and the airline’s readiness to meet future demands.

For our Bon Appétit readers, Chef Abdelhadi Fahmi, Sous Chef at Dhigali Maldives, brings a taste of tradition with his aromatic “Tender Fish Curry with Indian Spices.” A harmonious blend of tender tuna, coconut milk, and bold Indian flavors, this dish is a tribute to both comfort and craft. Hailing from Egypt, Chef Hadi’s culinary journey, which spans the Maldives, Seychelles, Doha, and his homeland, is a testament to passion, perseverance, and culinary excellence.

We’re counting down the days to the most exciting travel event of the year — Vacations Expo 2025! Happening from April 17th to 20th at Hulhumalé Central Park, this year’s edition is set to be the biggest and most dynamic yet, with over 40 exhibitors, unbeatable travel deals, and an inspiring display of global tourism experiences. Get ready to explore, connect, and be part of an event that’s redefining the future of travel in the Maldives and beyond!

We hope this edition offers a rich tapestry of stories that reflect the vibrant evolution of our industries and the inspiring individuals behind them.

Finally, in our Frankly Speaking segment, we engage in timely discourse on the continued dominance of traditional markets like China and Russia, and the critical need to diversify our source markets through inventive, forward-thinking strategies.

Given the dominance of a few key markets like China and Russia, how important is it to diversify source markets, and what initiatives could be taken to attract tourists from emerging markets?

From the trends we have seen in the past, Russians are not traveling to Maldives from May until October. It is very important to take measures to explore emerging markets to maintain a good occupancy during the low season.

Diversifying source markets is vital for several reasons, particularly given the dominance of key markets. Some factors cannot be neglected when considering the importance of diversifying our source markets. These include the mitigation risks when we depend on a few source markets. We face the risk of those markets’ vulnerability to political unrest, economic downturns, pandemics, etc. By diversifying, these risks are minimized or limited. To effectively promote our destination to emerging markets, we should first do our homework, including research and analysis and develop a strategy that best suits the needs of the new markets. By diversifying existing source markets and engaging new and emerging markets, the destination Maldives can increase the influx of guests throughout the year benefitting the average occupancy.

As the saying goes, we should not put all our eggs in one basket. We need to diversify our products and also our source markets. It’s not good to depend on a few source markets. The question I find often asking myself is, what happens when the Ukraine war ends and will Russia continue to be a main inbound source market then?

Ali (Bunny)

Frankly speaking, we should maintain the Chinese and Russian markets while ensuring continuous marketing efforts in our traditional markets like Italy, the UK, Germany, and France by offering better resort options. At the same time, we must actively attract emerging markets such as Poland, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Korea, and Japan. To truly diversify tourism, we need to encourage visitors to explore beyond Malé, Baa, and Ari Atoll and promote destinations like Gaafu Alif, Gaafu Dhaalu, Noonu, Thaa, shaviani , raa and laviani Atoll. However, achieving this requires a more affordable and efficient transport system.
