DHANDI JEHUN: Reflection of The Lively Maldivian Spirit

Dhandi Jehun is another popular form of entertainment, performed throughout the country to celebrate festivities such as Eid. The rhythm of the drums and the joyous dance is a reflection of the lively spirit of the Maldives and its people.

The Dhandi Jehun folk dance of the Maldives is performed in a style that differs from island to island, with some performances featuring up to 30 men. With roots tracing back all the way to the Malik (Minicoy Islands), the performance includes a lead singer who sings traditional “Thaara” or “Unbaa” songs, while the remaining performers sing in harmony and dance to the beat. In the dance, each participant holds sticks referred to as Dhandi and strikes them against the sticks of the dancer across from them while moving.

For those seeking to experience the true essence of the Maldives, make sure to catch one of these traditional music performances. The drum, the bass, and the energy of the dancers will take you on a journey of transcendent island rhythms and transport you to a world that is uniquely Maldivian.

Emirates Awarded Certified Autism Center Designation for All Check-In Facilities in Dubai

Furthering Dubai's commitment to accessible travel and in time for World Autism Awareness Day on April 2; Emirates has achieved a Certified Autism Center™ Designation for all of its Dubai Check In facilities - Emirates City Check-in & Travel Store in DIFC, Emirates Cruise Check In - Port Rashid, Emirates Cruise Check In - Dubai Harbour and Emirates City Check-In Ajman, in addition to the Emirates’ dedicated hub in Terminal 3 at Dubai International Airport (DXB).

The certification, awarded by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) ensures that all Emirates facilities in Dubai have taken a significant step towards making travel more inclusive and accessible to neurodiverse customers, meeting criteria required for a comfortable and

supported travel experience.

As part of the designation, Emirates employees at the various facilities underwent specialized training on autism and sensory awareness, to equip them with the understanding and skills to address needs of autistic travelers or those with sensory sensitivities, along with their families. Comprehensive facilities audits were conducted across the locations, measuring all sensory inputs in public areas such as sound levels, lighting, and potential sights and smells to develop sensory guides, empowering travelers to make informed decisions and choose the environment that best suits their needs and preferences.

This achievement builds on the recent recognition of Dubai International Airport as the first international

airport to earn the designation from IBCCES and aligns with the Department of Economy and Tourism's (DET) vision of becoming the first Certified Autism Destination™ (CAD) in the Middle East.

Emirates' City Check-Ins across Dubai offer a seamless and stress-free pre-airport experience in convenient

and easily accessible locations, where Emirates customers can check in for flights up to 24 hours in advance, drop off luggage between four and 24 hours before departure, and choose between agent-assisted check-ins, robot-assisted check-ins, or self-service kiosks, allowing a more relaxed travel experience.

Air Seychelles and SriLankan Airlines Announce Codeshare Partnership

Air Seychelles, the Republic of Seychelles’ national airline and Sri Lankan Airlines, the flag carrier of Sri Lanka, have announced a new code-sharing partnership, expanding the number of destinations accessible to customers from the paradise islands flying between Mahe and Colombo.

Over 20 destinations are included in the partnership, which includes much requested ones such as Sydney and Melbourne in Australia as well as other popular stops in India, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. SriLankan Airlines’ Passengers will also be able to fly from Colombo to Mahé with the

activation of the codeshare partnership.

This new codeshare agreement will allow Air Seychelles and SriLankan Airlines to place their codes on each other’s flights and enable passengers to continue their journey conveniently using a single booking and with their baggage checked in all the way to the final destination. It also means passengers can book their travels with both airlines, through online travel agencies, as well as with local travel agents.

In June last year, when Air Seychelles launched the Colombo service, the two airlines signed an initial interline agreement that introduced multiple

cities within the south-east Asia region to the local market’s choice of destinations.

Sandy Benoiton, Air Seychelles’ Chief Executive Officer shares “now that we have been flying to Colombo for over 9 months, the twice-weekly flights have proven successful. The next step to solidifying our relationship is with this code-share, allowing even more passengers the convenience of a single ticket to more points served by our partner in Asia and Australia.

Richard Nuttall, Chief Executive Officer of SriLankan Airlines stated, “We are pleased to boost our codeshare network and presence in the African region through this new partnership. We look forward to working with Air Seychelles to provide our customers even more African destination options in the coming years.”

Flights under the codeshare agreement are available to book now and will begin operating in April 2024.

JA Manafaru Introduces 'Wellness Your Way' Retreat Packages

As part of JA Manafaru’s evolution towards wellness, the private island resort in the serene Haa Alifu Atoll will soon launch five distinct wellness retreat packages as an added option for guests to partake during their dreamy Maldives vacation.

Since the first announcement of the developing wellness initiatives last year with the launch of the acclaimed Wellness Your Way menus on October 16, 2023, World Food Day, the resort has proudly committed to ensuring guests have choices around wellness. The new retreat packages were curated by offering guests' a la carte choices of treatments and activities within the package inclusions. The carefully selected menus allow guests to choose the treatments that suit their own personal style while being confident that they will contribute to their wellbeing journey's results.

JA Manafaru announces their most unique retreat package, JA Signature Culinary Journey. Since the launch of the Wellness Your Way menus, the resort has observed that many guests have chosen to stay at JA Manafaru because of the menus. The F&B

and culinary teams have noticed an increase of guests who are wanting to change their dietary lifestyle or who have in fact been advised to by their doctor. This led to the creation of this special retreat package.

The JA Signature Culinary retreat offers guests a chance to effortlessly follow their new diet with naturally nurturing cuisine and reset their system with specialized treatments while being supported by the JA Manafaru's team. To further elevate the guest experience through this package, several culinary classes and workshops were included so that the long-staying guests will continually enjoy their wellness journey during their stay, ensuring they have all the tools with culinary learning for long term healthful habits.

Both the JA Signature Culinary Retreat and the Detox and Reset programs include Epi-Genetic testing. This non-invasive testing is offered in partnership with Cura Pura clinic in Portugal and Cell Wellbeing Laboratory in Germany. Hair testing has been used since the 1800’s but modern technology has allowed JA Manafaru to

collect samples from guests on the island and electronically send the data to the laboratory in Germany for analysis. A 36-page report is subsequently generated which offers an insight into the best foods for the individual to eat as well as foods to avoid. To ensure a full understanding of the results, the guests will have a video consultation with the experts at Cura Pura clinic, led by Dr. Rui Loreiro, a recent visiting practitioner at JA Manafaru.

Moreover, the resort team will create personalized meal plans for the retreat

guests to enjoy during their journey. Meal planning is available for all retreat guests and guests following other retreat plans or simply on vacation can sign up for our optional Epi-genetic testing service.

All guests partaking in retreat programs will receive special inclusions such as daily morning lime ritual and evening detox elixir, villa aromatherapy of their choice, a Wellness Your Way tote bag, bamboo and glass water flask and personal journal to record their wellness journey, among others.

Four Seasons Maldives at Kuda Huraa Announces the Launch of a Second Menu at Baraabaru

A tantalising culinary sequel unfolds from April 2, 2024 in the dramatic lagoon-top setting of Baraabaru at Four

The partnership between Indian-born, New York-based Chef Hari Nayak and Baraabaru’s Head Chef Kishan Singh continues with a second menu, marking the next chapter in a collaborative journey that began in October 2023. This new menu not only showcases the rich cultural and culinary heritage of the Indian subcontinent and the Maldives but also

ventures into new territories and passions.

The Nayak-Singh Baraabaru partnership is more than a marriage of ingredients and creativity; it’s an alignment of philosophies and passions. Visionary Chef Hari Nayak’s journey from the coastal city of Udipi, India, to the world’s most prestigious restaurants is reflected in his modern yet authentic interpretation of Indian gastronomy. Chef Kishan Singh is celebrated for his dedication to natural flavours and meticulous focus on fresh, authentic dishes, complementing Chef

Nayak’s global perspective with deep-rooted local wisdom.

The new season Baraabaru menu expands its gaze beyond the Southern coastal recipes that defined Chef Hari’s India's childhood and the first menu, embracing a pan-Indian approach with a modern twist. "We're thrilled by the overwhelming reception from our guests who have recently dined at Baraabaru," comments Didier Jardin, General Manager at Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa. "We're excited to elevate the dining experience even further with this new menu selection that features popular favourites as well as a selection of new dishes."

Signature starters include the Kokum Cured Tuna, which marries the tangy essence of Bhel Puri with creamy avocado in a refreshing cold salad. The Tandoori Grilled King Oyster Mushroom is a subtly spiced delicacy; its meaty texture the perfect canvas for the smokiness of the tandoor. The Kosha Mangsho, a Bengali-style slow-cooked mutton, is prepared with black masala, offering nuanced layers of intense yet comforting

flavour. The Burrata Butter Chicken combines the charred smokiness of tandoor-baked chicken tikka with the velvet texture of melted burrata and a richly roasted tomato makhini sauce. The Lamb Shank Biryani is a majestic assembly of slow-cooked lamb with aromatic saffron-infused Keralan rice, sweet caramelised onions and the buttery crunch of toasted cashews.

Chef Hari Nayak’s favourite dish, the Ghee Roasted Baby Eggplant, pairs the creaminess of ghee-enriched eggplant with the warmth of red chilli and the tang of tamarind. Served with a feather-light Neer Dosa, this dish expresses the revered chef’s hallmark blend of classic flavours with modern flair. Chef Kishan Singh’s chosen dish is the Goan Peri Peri Prawn served with garlic pachadi and curry leaf oil.

As guests dine beneath Kuda Huraa’s endless skies, each bite explores the treasures of sea and land - and tells the tale of two chefs united in their passion for Indian flavours, fresh Maldivian ingredients, and the joy of creating together.

10 Years Later, Still Living the Dream

Vuly&Rok

Thank you for taking the time to chat with us again; this is an important year for you guys, marking 10 years of your company's inception. How are you both feeling after reaching such a monumental milestone?

Vuly: Our journey began as two fresh graduates, and the hurdles we encountered, particularly in the initial phase, were daunting. Frankly, I never envisioned us reaching this point. The path was strewn with difficulties, but we braved them all, hand in hand.

Roky: Reflecting on our early days, I recall how Vuly and I would personally handle every aspect of the hotel to keep it afloat. We did everything from night shifts to utilising our kitchen training to prepare meals for our guests. These fond memories now serve as a solid foundation for our business.

You recently opened a new guesthouse in Hulhumale, H78 Veli. This is in addition to your successful restaurant Catch78 and logistics company Ocean 78.

Vuly: Over the years, we have been looking for opportunities to expand our guesthouse portfolio since we have almost 100% occupancy at h78 most of the time. In the meantime, we ensured that our restaurant was successful and expanded into transport services. The new property is doing very well, and we are happy to have waited for the right opportunity.

Roky: Since our operations have doubled, we have been working to restructure the company and build the team. A well-trained team ensures customer satisfaction and a sustainable business, especially in hospitality. Expansion is always a great step forward, but we must be analytical and cautious in how we approach it.

How do you manage the responsibilities of having multiple businesses along with a young son?

Vuly: We always say that it takes a village to raise children initially. When we had our son Luka, we lived in Slovenia while working remotely, and then Roky’s parents helped us out a lot. They are not with us anymore, but their support was crucial in those days, especially since Luka was born during COVID-19, and we had to find a way to keep our business running, all the while having a newborn.

Roky: Since we returned to the Maldives, we owe a huge

thanks to Vuly's mom, dad, sister, aunts, and uncles for taking such good care of our son while we focused on business. We usually spend quality time on weekends as a family with our son.

How do you divide your responsibilities at work and how do you manage working together and living together?

Vuly: Lucky for us, Roky and I are opposites; opposites attract, as they say, so we can divide our work to do what we love to do. We try to keep working and not talk about work at home, but that doesn’t always happen(laugh).

Roky: Vuly manages HR, Marketing, and finances while I look after Sales, maintenance and daily operations. We both sit down for weekly meetings and strategy discussions and to brief each other on the other departments. I think having clear responsibilities at work and home and respecting each other's boundaries, and trusting in the work the other person is doing are the keys to a harmonious relationship.

What are the biggest obstacles you have faced over the years, and how have you overcome them?

Vuly: Apart from the issues we faced during the first years opening the hotel, I would say the waste issue in common areas was a big problem, especially garbage on local beach areas. For the last few years, HDC has been cleaning up common areas as best as they can, so we highly appreciate it. A permanent solution would be civic responsibility to keep common areas clean. We do our best to keep our area clean for our guests and mitigate these issues with the best service we can give.

Roky: In addition to what Vuly highlighted, the COVID

years were tough for us, as they were for many others; we overcame them through product diversification. Working in the Maldives was a unique experience; it was very dynamic. No two days were the same, and no two problems had the same solution. It is a challenge, but one that has been fun to take on.

In your 10 years working in the guest house industry, you have witnessed a lot of growth in the sector; what are your thoughts on the current state of the sector and how do you envision it in the future in terms of developmental aspects?

Vuly: The guesthouse industry has given us locals a platform to share our culture with tourists and a chance to essentially invite them to our homes and share the beauty of local and island life with them. It has been wonderful to see the industry produce incredible entrepreneurs not only in owning and running guesthouses but also in supporting businesses such as water sports, restaurants, and more. I hope that the growth is carried out sustainably in a strategic way so that we can leave a lasting legacy for future generations.

Roky: Ever since I came to Maldives for the first time 15 years ago, I have been enamoured by her beauty, especially in the local islands. The Maldivian hospitality is like no other, and the food, wow, once you have Maldivian food, you will always come back for more. My personal favourite is fihunu gulha, and any hedhikaa really. I see a lot of growth potential, especially further from Male’ city in the Northern and Southern regions. I hope to see guesthouse tourism boom all over Maldives in the coming years.

Final thoughts

Vuly and Roky: Since we met in university, our dream has been to run a hotel by the beach together. We wouldn’t have been able to do this without the support of our parents. Thank you for your love and guidance and for always being there for us in our time of need. We would also like to thank our team, without whom we wouldn’t be able to bring our vision to life, and to all our friends and family who have supported us every step of the way.

Thank you all!

Harnessing Innovation and Strategy: Navigating the Challenging Summer Ahead for Maldives Tourism

The Maldives tourism industry faces an increasingly competitive landscape as we approach the summer season. With the addition of new guesthouse beds and the constant challenge of securing additional airline routes, hoteliers are concerned about the potential for lower occupancy rates. Moreover, the global atmosphere is tense with geopolitical issues like the Iran-Israel conflict, which adds to the uncertainty. In this environment, tourism marketers must innovate and adapt. Here’s how you can differentiate and thrive even in these challenging times.

Understanding the Current Landscape

The Maldives' economy is significantly driven by tourism, which contributes about 30% directly to the GDP. Recent trends indicate a shift towards increased local guesthouse accommodations, which, while diversifying the market, have also intensified competition for resorts. Furthermore, stagnant airline capacity has limited new tourist inflows. According to the latest tourism statistics, the growth in arrivals has not kept pace with the increase in accommodation options, signaling a need for strategic adjustments in the marketing approach.

Leveraging Marketing Wisdom

Philip Kotler, a leading marketing expert, once said, "The best advertising is done by satisfied customers." As we think about steering through a less favorable season, focusing on enhancing customer experience is paramount. Encouraging and leveraging positive reviews and word of mouth can be more powerful than traditional advertising. Creating unique, personalized experiences that guests can’t help but share with others could be a cornerstone of our marketing strategy.

David Ogilvy, another marketing legend, advocated for the importance of research in understanding what the consumer wants. He famously remarked, "The consumer isn't a moron; she is your wife." In the context of

Innovation in hospitality isn't just about technology; it's also about conceptualizing new and unique ways to attract tourists. This could involve hosting themed events, promoting eco-friendly practices and sustainability, or creating immersive cultural experiences that differentiate Maldivian resorts from other destinations.

the Maldives, this means profoundly understanding the nuanced needs of diverse traveler segments – from honeymooners and luxury seekers to adventure Travelers and cultural explorers.

The Role of AI in Tourism Marketing Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping how we approach marketing in the tourism sector. AI can analyze large volumes of data to predict trends, personalize marketing messages, and enhance customer service. For instance, AI-powered chatbots can provide 24/7 assistance to potential guests, managing bookings and answering inquiries instantly, enriching the customer experience and freeing up human resources for more complex tasks.

Furthermore, AI can optimize pricing strategies based on real-time market data, helping properties in the Maldives maintain competitive rates and maximize occupancy. By leveraging AI, marketers can attract guests and create tailored experiences that meet their specific expectations and desires.

Mitigating Geo-political Sensitivities

The ongoing tensions in regions like Iran and Israel can have ripple effects across global travel patterns. Marketers in the Maldives must monitor these situations closely and adjust their marketing strategies accordingly. This may include targeting alternative markets less affected by regional instabilities or adjusting promotional materials to ensure sensitivity to these issues.

Conclusion

The path ahead for Maldives tourism is challenging but ripe with opportunities for those willing to innovate and adapt. Marketers can survive and thrive by understanding current trends, leveraging marketing wisdom, integrating AI, and staying sensitive to global issues. Remember, as Seth Godin once put it, “Don’t find customers for your products; find products for your customers.” This summer, let’s think differently, act strategically, and tailor our offerings to the evolving needs of our guests. Let's turn these challenges into stepping stones for success.

Oaga Garden Green Rice

Chef Abu's culinary journey began two decades ago at the tender age of 17. Starting humbly as a steward, his initial tasks were seemingly mundane - but beneath the surface, a passion for food simmered. Driven by a desire to create both delectable and healthy dishes, Chef Abu nurtured this passion, eventually turning it into a craft that celebrates local ingredients.

What inspired you to create this dish?

My father's health was a major inspiration for this dish. I wanted to create a vibrant vegetarian option that not only tasted delicious but also incorporated healthy elements. Turning to the rich history of Maldivian traditional medicine, I found inspiration in the diverse herbs known for their potential health benefits.

INGRIDENTS :

1 small onion

2 scotch bonnet peppers

2 large garlic cloves

100g basil

100g mint

3g ginger

1 tbsp lime juice

2/3 cup water

½ tsp salt

3 tbsp olive oil

100g mixed herbs

METHOD:

1. Rinse rice until water runs clear. Set aside.

2. Blend water, pepper, basil, mint, mixed herbs, salt and spirulina until smooth (30 seconds). Cook

1. Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Add onion, garlic, ginger and a healthy pinch of sea salt. Sauté 3-4 minutes.

2. Add rice and toast for 2-3 minutes.

3. Pour in green blend, which should just cover the rice, then bring to a simmer. Cover and cook for 18 minutes (absolutely no peeking!).

4. Rest for 10 minutes with lid on for fluffy rice. Serve

2 cups basmati rice ?

• Top with lime wedges and serve with grilled tuna.

How might the ongoing conflict in the Middle East influence travel patterns and the utilization of Middle Eastern airlines for tourists visiting the Maldives? Specifically, considering factors such as potential disruptions in flight routes, changes in traveler preferences due to safety concerns, and the broader geopolitical implications on the tourism industry in the Maldives.

In the past, I have understood that the absence of the National Airlines would be a disadvantage for us. It's been half a century since the inception of tourism in the Maldives. You have to learn from a variety of experiences. One of the most important components of Maldives tourism sector is 'transportation' which highly depends on the Middle East. The Maldives is the worst affected by any crisis in the Middle East. The Maldives is also affected by the heavy rain in the Middle East.

There is no one to take responsibility for the cancellation of the visit of many tourists arriving in the Maldives. The holiday is also ruined when the passenger does not receive the money he paid to the resort. The danger of this should be considered, the economic damage that the Maldivians may suffer. Even if the government stops spending, all that needs to be done is to strengthen the private airlines, which can bring tourists to the Maldives. Otherwise, it has been experienced many times that tourism will fall in every storm in the Middle East. It's still the same bitter experience as before.

Flight Route Disruptions: Middle Eastern airlines, renowned for their connectivity and service, often serve as critical hubs for international travel, including flights to the Maldives. Conflicts in the region can lead to airspace restrictions or closures, which might necessitate rerouting of flights. This increases travel times and can lead to higher operational costs for airlines, potentially causing an increase in ticket prices. The strategic location of Middle Eastern hubs like Dubai, Doha, and Abu Dhabi means that any disruption could impact many travelers opting for these routes to reach destinations like the Maldives.

Changes in Traveler Preferences Due to Safety Concerns: Safety is paramount for travelers, and heightened tensions or conflicts in the Middle East might deter tourists from flying through this region. Travelers might opt for alternative routes or airlines that bypass the Middle East entirely despite potentially higher costs or longer travel times. This shift could affect the load factor on Middle Eastern airlines and, by extension, affect tourist arrivals in destinations served by these airlines, including the Maldives.

Strategic Adaptations for Marketing: From a marketing perspective, it’s crucial to monitor these developments closely and adapt strategies accordingly. This might involve promoting alternative travel routes, collaborating with airlines that provide non-Middle Eastern transit options ( Turkish, UL & BA), and reassuring potential tourists of the safety and accessibility of the Maldives.

Brewing geopolitics in the Middle East and its unpredictable consequences including safety concerns and macroeconomics conditions will definitely impact tourism revenues. We have to act now! MATATO, MATI and MMPRC should proactively find alternative channels to compensate.

The conflict's broader geopolitical implications, including economic sanctions, diplomatic tensions, and potential retaliatory actions, could potentially have far-reaching effects on the tourism industry in the Maldives. This may manifest in decreased visitor numbers from key markets, shifts in investment and development strategies, and increased economic uncertainty. While this represents a worst-case scenario, it is worth noting that the situation may not escalate further, particularly in an election year for the United States.

Geopolitical tensions are nothing new to the tourism industry in general and Maldives in particular. We have already observed Russia Ukraine battle, however tourism flow from this region didn’t decrease to the Maldives.

In general, I personally don’t see any negative impact using Middle Eastern carriers simply because Big 3 players in the Middle East are perfectly positioned to use alternate routes to cover European sectors.

However, the ongoing unrest in the Middle East poses considerable challenges to the Middle Eastern airlines. I don’t rule out the possibility of flight disruption, delays or even price increase through surcharges if airlines opted to use longer routes. Additionally, heightened security measures and travel advisories may further influence tourist decisions on using Middle Eastern airlines.

The situation invariably might create an impact on Maldivian Resorts such as probable cancellations or postponement, potential additional transfer cost if the airline changes schedule, increase in total package price if an airline surcharge is imposed.

Therefore, while the impact may not be direct, the unrest in the Middle East can have ripple effects on Maldives tourism through various channels.
