introducing exo booster the world’s first bacterial exosome system, with efficacy that surpasses human exosomes.*
Each professional treatment delivers 10 billion skin-rejuvenating exosomes, making Exo Booster one of the most advanced solutions for targeted skin regeneration. It integrates seamlessly into professional treatments and at-home routines, offering key benefits:
Accelerates Skin Renewal – Enhances cellular communication to speed up repair, minimising fine lines and wrinkles.
Strengthens the Skin Barrier – Reinforces the skin’s defences, locking in moisture and shielding against environmental stressors.
Boosts Radiance and Evens Skin Tone – Supports natural skin renewal to improve clarity and reduce dullness.
Maximises Treatment Results – Lightweight yet powerful, Exo Booster enhances the efficacy of professional treatments and homecare serums.
Extended Post-Treatment Home Care – Offers six days of posttreatment skin support, compared to just 1.5 days with humanderived exosomes, ensuring sustained repair and renewal.
In addition to its role in skin renewal, Exo Booster also modulates inflammation—a key factor in premature ageing and compromised skin barrier function. Chronic inflammation, often caused by environmental stressors, UV exposure, and pollution, can lead to the breakdown of collagen and elastin. By introducing exosomes that actively promote resolution-phase responses, Exo Booster helps interrupt the cycle of inflammation, keeping the skin in an optimal state for repair.
*30 subjects - clinical study with ultra clear laser (ablative settings), RF Microneedling and Tixel laser. Split face method,
Most anti-ageing treatments focus on hydration or surface-level exfoliation. Exo Booster works deeper, directly enhancing the skin’s natural repair and renewal mechanisms. Its vegan, Lactobacillus-derived exosomes provide longer-lasting effects than human- or plant-based exosomes, offering sustained support for six days post application. This efficiency makes it one of the most powerful and advanced exosome-powered treatments available.
does your clinic offer comprehensive options to safely target all forms of hyperpigmentation on all skin tones?
Our natural (or “constitutive”) skin color is the basic melanin content of our skin that we genetically inherit. Hyperpigmentation occurs when melanin – the brown pigment responsible for creating all skin colors – is deposited in greater than usual amounts. The most common forms of hyperpigmentation are melasma, sun spots, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
Hyperpigmentation treatments have boomed in the last 10 years, but many are either not strong enough or can trigger unwanted reactions –especially among people with darker skin tones who are prone to PIH.
This unique professional peel system reduces all forms of hyperpigmentation in less than 6 weeks, and is effective and safe on all skin tones.
Melanopro Peel System is a clinical-strength peel program that delivers visible results in less than 6 weeks. This transformative 2-phase regimen works to visibly counteract environmental skin damage – fading dark spots, reducing the appearance of hyperpigmentation, and smoothing skin’s texture to reveal fresh, brighter skin.
Phase 1
Intensive Peeling Masque (Day 1)
• Professional application (45min)
• Removed at home (4-7 hours later)
Phase 2
Resurfacing Moisturizer (4-6 weeks)
• Home applications: 2-3 times daily
• Day 1-6: flaking
• Day 7-15: adjustment
• Day 16-48: results peak
Melanopro Peel System does more than enhance your professional offering on all hyperpigmentation concerns – it is also highly profitable.

Welcome to our May 2025 issue. Is it just me, or is 2025 flying by? In nearly every clinic I’ve visited or event I’ve attended lately, one theme keeps emerging, businesses are being stretched to their limits. Whether it’s economic uncertainty, ongoing regulatory shifts, or the sheer exhaustion of trying to do it all, this year feels like one of recalibration: clearing out what no longer serves us and moving towards a more aligned, balanced way of working.

Stephanie McLean, Managing editor tried: Aerolaser Neo Elite at HÜD I love treatments that save time and address multiple concerns, so when I was invited to try the Aerolase Neo Elite at HÜD’s newest location, I jumped at the chance. Lately, I’ve noticed signs of sun damage and vascularity creeping in, likely from summers spent on the lake in Mildura. The Neo Elite uses advanced 650-micro second technology to deliver energy deep into the skin, targeting acne, rosacea, pigmentation, fine lines, and more.
My therapist, Ruby, explained how the device breaks down pigment and improves tone and texture while coagulating unwanted blood vessels, especially helpful for the redness around my nose, and stimulating collagen production, something I’ve become more conscious of in my 30s.
The treatment itself felt like a soft static zap, gentle and well-tolerated. The only heat I noticed was near the temples where the skin is thinner. Afterward, my skin looked glowing, even, and noticeably brighter, an impressive result from one session.
Ruby mentioned that pigment may rise post-treatment, which is ideal for targeting again in a follow-up. I’ve already rebooked for four weeks and will pair it with a BioRepeel. Neo Elite’s versatility makes it a standout, it stacks well with other treatments and delivers visible results.
If you’re looking to invest in a light-based treatment that truly works, I’d highly recommend adding the Neo Elite by Aerolase to your menu.
Yes, you probably guessed it from our cover (LOL), but I couldn’t wait to try the latest evolution of one of my all-time favourite treatments, Emface Eyes!
This newly launched applicator is an exciting extension of the original EmFace treatment, and it’s specifically designed to target those naughty little lines under the eyes (you know the ones). As someone who’s always on the lookout for effective, non-invasive solutions for the delicate eye area, this treatment absolutely impressed me.
EmFace Eyes works by strengthening the lower eyelid muscles using synchronized RF and HIFES™ technology. The result? Improved skin texture, reduced under-eye puffiness, a visible boost in circulation and lymphatic drainage, and a softening of fine lines, dark circles, and crow’s feet. After just one session, I noticed a subtle yet refreshing lift and brightness under the eyes, and I’m genuinely excited to complete the full protocol, two treatments down, 2 x more to go.
Stephanie McLean, Managing editor tried: Signature Osmosis Skin Health Medi Facial at Aurora Spa & Bathhouse
Some moments really do come full circle. This one brought me back to where my career in wellness first began, Aurora Spa Retreat, now beautifully reimagined as Aurora Spa & Bathhouse. After a chaotic week that included six flights, I couldn’t have asked for a better time to pause, reset, and experience their new Signature Osmosis Skin Health Medi-Facial.
Larissa, my therapist for the day, welcomed me into the treatment room and began with a warm foot bath and gentle exfoliation. As she worked, we chatted about my skin goals, and she introduced the Osmosis Facial Infusion, a non-inflammatory, skin-remodelling treatment designed to boost circulation, hydration, and immunity. Unlike traditional peels, this one delivers high-dose actives deep into the dermis via a liposomal delivery system.
Once I was tucked into the treatment bed, Larissa invited me to take three grounding breaths, a small but powerful ritual that instantly transported me back to my own days as a therapist. She then began a deeply nourishing cleanse with the Osmosis Balm Cleanse, followed by a gentle exfoliation to prepare the skin.
Using the RevitaPen Pro, she infused liposomal retinaldehyde, a potent 2% form of vitamin A and a direct precursor to retinoic acid into my skin. It offers regenerative results without the irritation or peeling typically associated with traditional vitamin A treatments. The sensation was a hypnotic glide, and my skin drank in every drop.
Next came a firm massage targeting my TMJ, ears, and neck, where I hold the most tension. As the mango mask restored my skin, a soothing hand massage left me deeply relaxed. This treatment truly delivers on every level, not just for your skin, but for your soul. Combining sciencebacked results with calming actives that nourish, restore, and recalibrate.

How Design and Medicine Align at This Modern Menopause Clinic
When Dr Fatima Khan set out to create her own clinic dedicated to women’s hormonal health, she knew she wanted to challenge everything the traditional medical setting represented. After years in stark hospital environments, Dr Khan envisioned a sanctuary where midlife wasn’t seen as a decline but a transition to power.
“I wanted the clinic to feel more like an extension of my living room than a consultation room,” she explains. “A space that was bold, calm, and comforting. One that affirmed to women that they are seen, heard, and supported.”
She collaborated with interior designer Nickolas Gurtler, known for blending elegance with emotional resonance. Together, they created a space that merges warmth with authority, softness with structure.
“We wanted to shift away from the sterile, clinical feel,” says Nickolas. “Instead, our focus was on warmth, comfort, and dignity.”
Name: MENOPAUSE CLINIC
At every stage, Dr Khan’s values guided the process. Her desire for emotional safety informed material choices and layout. “From the beginning, Dr Khan spoke about wanting the space to feel like a home,” Nickolas adds.
The design is layered with symbolism. Burgundy tones appear throughout, rich, grounded, and transformative. Red doors signal thresholds, symbolic of moving into new chapters. In the waiting area, a custom sofa and soft textures invite women to settle, not pass through.
Dr Khan’s clinical philosophy is grounded in the belief that hormonal health is both physical and emotional. “Our hormones respond to what we see, feel, and hear,” she explains. That’s why the space includes soft lighting, textured surfaces, fresh flowers, gentle music, and a curated bookshelf filled with literature by and for women.
Owner: DR FATIMA KHAN
Location: CREMORNE, VIC
Size: 95 sqm
Number of rooms: THREE
Number of staff: TWO
Interior Inspiration:
BOLD, BEAUTIFUL, WISDOM, ELEGANT, CALM
“Healing doesn’t just happen through medicine,” she adds. “It happens through environment, through emotional safety, through care.”
One of the most striking features is the reception desk, carved from Rosso Levanto marble. “It has a kind of gravity to it,” says Nickolas. “It’s strong, unapologetic, and sets the tone that this clinic is about strength and dignity.”
Materials throughout were chosen to avoid the overdone “feminine wellness” aesthetic. “That visual language didn’t reflect the depth of Dr Khan’s work,” says Nickolas. “This space needed to mirror the complexity of midlife transitions.” For Dr Khan, that meant creating a space where women felt seen. “This chapter of life is when women step into their fullest wisdom,” she says. “The space needed to reflect that, not neutralise it.”
The clinic is shaped by small, deliberate gestures: velvet sofas, fresh flowers, and art honouring the female experience. “Growing up, I watched women transform with red lipstick, it wasn’t vanity, it was power,” says Nickolas. That confidence flows through lounge-like spaces and quiet, supportive touches. As Dr Khan continues to advocate for hormone education and mental health, she says the space had to reflect those same values. “Every touchpoint mirrors our mission, to offer holistic, personalised care, grounded in empathy and knowledge.” That mission now lives not just in her words, but in the walls themselves: in the red doorways, marble lines, and the books women take home. “This is what women deserve,” Dr Khan says. “To walk into a space that reminds them they’re not fading, they’re arriving.”

The unparalleled aesthetic event pushing our industry forward.
The Fresh Life 2025 returns to Brisbane’s Howard Smith Wharves from September 2-4, designed to meet the evolving needs of aesthetic professionals. This is the one conference on your calendar that promises to deliver a program to uplift you, support you, and give you a well-deserved rest between it all. There is something for everyone – whether you’re just starting out or looking to refine your expertise. The Fresh Life is entering its fourth year, and if past years have shown us anything, it’s that these three takeaways make all the difference.
1. Clinical confidence with hands-on training
Leave with practical, proven techniques, from live demonstrations and structured protocols with industry experts, this is your chance to elevate both your clinical and professional capabilities. Gain confidence and improve patient outcomes while learning in a relaxed and supportive environment.
2. Business strategies
Whether it’s improving patient pathways, refining pricing, or developing your team, you’ll hear from clinic owners and leaders who’ve done it , and are ready to share how.
3. Open and honest conversations
Tackle critical topics like regulatory changes, professional autonomy, and ethical patient care. Expect candid panel discussions that shape the future and you’ll want a front-row seat. At The Fresh Life, you’re more than just an attendee. We’ve crafted this conference to feel like an extension of your support network, where industry boundaries fade, and your voice is always heard. This is your space to grow, connect, and feel empowered. You’ll leave not just with new skills, but with the confidence and community to support you long after the event ends.
Rachel and Ashlea, the powerhouse team behind Santé Skin Boutique in Western Australia, have always been clear on their mission: celebrating real people, real skin, and real results. Built on ethical, transparent, and personalised care, their boutique clinic has become a trusted leader in holistic, patient-first cosmetic treatments.
Attending The Fresh Life 2024 was a defining moment for the duo. As first-time attendees, they came to learn, but left deeply transformed, carrying fresh insights and renewed purpose back to their clinic.
“The Fresh Life was a huge milestone for us, our very first aesthetics conference and it did not disappoint! We went in looking to learn new skills and techniques, but we walked away with so much more. The real highlight was the connections we made. Being a small business owner can sometimes feel isolating, so stepping into such a welcoming and inspiring community was everything. The Fresh family made us feel right at home, and being surrounded by industry leaders, expert speakers, and incredibly talented nurses left us beyond inspired.”
their client experience to the next level.
One of the most impactful takeaways for Rachel and Ashlea was the power of
From this, they created the ‘Santé Skin Edition’, a personalised consultation tool designed to guide clients on their aesthetic journey. This includes a customised ‘Skin Regime’ with at-home skincare recommendations and a ‘Skin Schedule’ outlining in-clinic treatments tailored to their skin goals. This approach helps clients feel more supported, educated, and confident in
their treatment plans, strengthening trust and deepening their commitment to the clinic.
“The response has been amazing! Clients love having a clear, personalised plan they can take home and reference, and for us, it’s been a game-changer in improving client retention and encouraging pre-booked treatments. Simple, effective, and transformative - just how we like it.”
Rachel and Ashlea’s experience at The Fresh Life wasn’t just about learning new techniques - it was about finding a community that understands and supports them, while also gaining the tools to refine their practice. For those considering attending The Fresh Life 2025, they have one piece of advice: “Go in with an open mind and be ready to be inspired - it’s an experience that will change the way you work, think, and connect in this industry.”
Set against the stunning backdrop of Brisbane’s riverfront, The Fresh Life 2025 offers not only the space to learn, but the space to pause, reflect, and recharge.

An elevated program, a refined rebrand, and a deep dive into the key conversations driving cosmetic dermatology.
Held over the weekend at the Crown Conference Centre, this year’s Australasian Society of Cosmetic Dermatologists (ASCD) Symposium offered a comprehensive three-day program filled with expert-led talks, live demonstrations, and networking opportunities. For the first time, the conference introduced an innovative layout that balanced themed workshops, plenary sessions, and small-group teaching, delivering a rich, hands-on experience for all attendees.
Emerging ingredients in Hyperpigmentation.
A continued focus for many practitioners is finding effective strategies to manage hyperpigmentation. Baz Hamo, founder of Propaira, highlighted both time-tested ingredient-based approaches and introduced new and emerging actives in the treatment and prevention of pigmentation. His technique focuses on targeting key stages of melanogenesis with specific ingredients. To interrupt the process before melanin synthesis begins, he recommends retinaldehyde to inhibit transcription. Once melanin production is underway, he targets tyrosinase inhibition with ingredients such as silymarin, tranexamic acid, alpha arbutin, gabridin (from liquorice), and cysteamine. For existing hyperpigmentation, he suggests niacinamide to inhibit melanosome transfer and retinaldehyde to promote the desquamation of pigment-laden skin cells.
An emerging ingredient yet to hit the mainstream is Cysteamine. Not only does it inhibit melanin production, but it also helps calm inflammation by reducing oxidative stress, a key contributor to the development of hyperpigmentation.
Clinical Photography in determining facial shape.
According to Dr Peter Callan, a Geelong-based plastic surgeon, the key to accurately assessing facial shape lies in perfecting your clinical photography. He explains that being too close to the subject can significantly distort results, for example, a photo taken just 1 foot away can result in up to 17% distortion, while one taken from 4 feet away reduces that to just 4%.
For those without a dedicated clinical photography setup, he recommends positioning your iPhone about 4 feet from the subject as a starting point and to standardise your lighting. However, he also emphasises that the image quality from a proper camera is
far superior and encourages investing in professional equipment for more accurate and consistent results.
An exciting new chapter for the ASCD begins today, as Professor Greg Goodman announces its new name. While “cosmetic” was originally part of the title, it didn’t fully capture the breadth of what the society represents. The updated name, Australian Society of Cosmetic and Procedural Dermatology, reflects a broader, more inclusive scope of practice and expertise.
In Greg’s words “The ASCD as a name just doesn’t reflect what we do, and honestly, it hasn’t since the beginning. It was a good name, easy to remember, but when people asked what I’d prefer, I’d say: we’re more serious than that. We don’t just do cosmetic and aesthetic work. We treat medical conditions through cosmetic pathways, and we manage cosmetic concerns with medical approaches.”
“Birthmarks, asymmetry, burns, accidents, all of these can be treated with cosmetic modalities. There’s a real crossover with some of the medical conditions we manage,” Greg explained. “So we reflected on what we wanted the name to encompass, and the reality is, the procedures we perform genuinely improve people’s lives and so that’s what we added to the name”.
Complying with AHPRA and TGA guidelines plus what’s to come.
The rollout will mirror the cosmetic surgery guidelines, offering a three-month transition period for practitioners to implement changes and ensure compliance.
McHeyzer focused on best practices in advertising, urging practitioners to provide balanced, accurate information, avoid misleading claims, support results with evidence, and clearly outline risks and recovery. He also reminded attendees of AHPRA’s selfassessment tool, available online to help maintain compliance.
Dr Phillip Artemi suggested the guidelines may tighten rules on who can administer injectables, alter scripting models, and update indemnity and telehealth standards.
His proposed solutions included consistent national regulations, minimum training standards for injectables, and clearer restrictions on professional titles to help consumers identify qualified providers.
When we were invited to join the CALECIM® team in Monaco to celebrate their new direct distribution in Australia, alongside UK media stars Alice Hart (The Tweakments Guide) and Victoria Woodhall (Get The Gloss), of course we couldn’t say no.
The Aesthetic & Anti-Aging Medicine World Congress (AMWC) in Monaco has long topped our international wish list, and this year, we finally made it. After a 27-hour journey, we landed in Nice and were whisked away to the beautiful Anantara Plaza Hotel, perfectly positioned opposite the beach. With just enough time to freshen up, we headed straight to Chez Pierre, a cosy, family-run French restaurant in the heart of Monaco. It was the perfect first stop, warm hospitality and comforting cuisine after a long-haul flight.
Monaco, with its Rolls Royce-lined streets and designer stores at every corner, was the ultimate backdrop for the 23rd edition of AMWC, held at the Grimaldi Forum. With over 15,000 attendees, 300 speakers, and 900+ brands represented, this global congress delivered an unforgettable fusion of science, luxury, and cutting-edge innovation in aesthetics, biohacking, and wellness.
SPA+CLINIC’s Kym joined the CALECIM ® team for a packed schedule of networking, learning, and insights, including a standout one-on-one interview with renowned UK aesthetic doctor, Dr Manav Bawa. Known for his holistic, results-driven approach to hair restoration, Dr Bawa shared his in-clinic protocol incorporating CALECIM® and how he addresses hair loss as a deeply personal journey.
“We begin every new patient journey with a 45-minute consultation,” he explained. “We look at lifestyle, diet, stress, even emotional events like grief or breakups. Hair loss isn’t just a cosmetic concern, it’s a window into overall health.”
Dr Bawa uses CALECIM ®’s stem cell-derived serum both as a standalone and in combination with other therapies, structured in three patient-friendly levels:
• Level 1: At-home use only — an accessible entry point.
• Level 2: A hybrid model — two in-clinic sessions with home maintenance.
• Level 3: Intensive — regular clinical treatments with at-home support for fast-tracked results.
“The beauty of CALECIM ® is that it’s effective, gentle on the scalp, and easy to comply with,” Dr Bawa said. “My patients feel empowered to take care of their scalp health between visits.”
He also addressed ethical concerns, noting that CALECIM ® is sustainably sourced from a single red deer umbilical cord collected in New Zealand in 2014, cruelty-free, and used to manufacture all products to this day.
On the congress floor, regenerative medicine was a dominant theme, with polynucleotides, exosomes, and stem cell technology commanding attention. Key takeaways included:
• The rise of longevity medicine and biohacking in aesthetic treatment plans.
• A growing shift toward natural, subtle results, especially among Millennials and Gen Z.
• A preference for non-surgical, collagen-boosting treatments, with many practitioners embracing protocols that move away from the overfilled “pillow face” aesthetic (perhaps lips are next, did we say that out loud?).
A memorable keynote came from Dr Jonquille Chantrey, who unpacked the impact of social media filters and “Metaverse Dysmorphia” on self-perception. With 42% of young patients now prioritising collagen stimulation and 35% leaning toward noninvasive options.
From headline sessions to intimate roundtables, CALECIM ® was positioned at the heart of the regenerative movement. Their search for Australian stockists and KOLs is in full swing, so now is the time for clinics looking to future-proof their offerings to get in touch.

As we age, facial volume gradually diminishes, leading to visible changes in structure and contour, often starting around perimenopause. This “sinking” effect is linked to the loss of facial fat pads, which are essential for maintaining a youthful appearance.
Modern approaches now focus on preserving these fat pads to restore natural structure and improve tissue quality, rather than simply adding volume. This new advancement supports facial definition through lipo-lifting techniques, targeting volume loss while maintaining softness and balance.
Overlooking Sydney Harbour on March 24th, pHformula Australia welcomed clinic partners and skin therapists from around the country to celebrate the launch of the ProtonPen and POINT peptide ointments.
The Proton Pen empowers professionals to elevate their controlled dermatological resurfacing treatments through a nanoneedling technique that optimises the delivery of targeted transdermal solutions – VITA A, VITA B, VITA C, HA, and TDS Firming with pyruvic acid. The event kicked off with workshops supported by Cryomed Aesthetics, Dermocosmètica, and Hugel Aesthetics, exploring K-beauty trends, skin bioremodelling, treatment protocols, and hair restoration.
Day one of the scientific program featured keynote talks on facial rejuvenation, GLP-1 use in aesthetics, and evolving surgical outcomes. A standout moment was the “Industry in Turmoil” panel, where experts including Dr Gabi Caswell, Dr David Kosenko, and Kate Evans from AHPRA addressed regulatory confusion, insurance gaps, and a growing call for industry transparency.
Speakers also covered advanced topics such as scar management, thread lifts, PRP, and the emerging world of exosomes, with Dr Alistair

From smarter marketing to seamless customer service, AI offers a lot of potential for aesthetic and wellness brands, but only when used thoughtfully and in compliance with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) guidelines.
AI is no longer just a Silicon Valley buzzword, it’s a practical, everyday tool that can help with anything from appointment setting to personalised product recommendations. But for salon, spa and wellness operators, especially those offering clinical treatments, embracing AI must be done with responsibility in mind.
Personalised, predictive and precise
Hyper-personalisation is the most impactful way you can use AI. By integrating AI platforms into your technology stack, whether through chatbots, email marketing or website content, you can easily provide more highly-tailored experiences. Think product suggestions based on skin types and treatment history to AI-powered reminders for seasonal services.
When implementing AI, it’s critical to ensure it doesn’t improvise medical advice or veer into unapproved territory. AHPRA’s strict regulations, especially concerning before-and-after imagery, testimonials and results claims, mean you must train your AI carefully. That includes limiting it from suggesting treatments that haven’t been discussed with a qualified practitioner, or from generating overly optimistic language that may mislead consumers.
A compliant AI is a trained AI:
• Teach your GPT tool about your specific procedures, products and protocols
• Embed AHPRA-compliant language frameworks into your system
• Regularly audit AI output to ensure content stays within ethical bounds
• Geo-relevance and audience understanding
An AI that truly adds value isn’t just smart, it’s local. Aesthetics and wellness preferences are often regional and even suburban. With training, your AI assistant should understand:
• Where your audience lives
• What treatments are popular in that area
• The terminology your clients best respond to
• Seasonal or cultural considerations
A clinic in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs may see different demand patterns than one on the Gold Coast, for example, and your AI needs to reflect that. This will make your marketing feel more bespoke and build better trust with potential clients.
AI can do more than just write Instagram captions or automate follow-ups. Some of the most exciting (and safe) ways to embrace it in 2025 include:
• AI-driven booking assistants that sync with your availability and reduce no-shows
• Virtual consultation preparation tools that help clients understand what to expect before their in-person visit
• Product recommendation engines that boost e-commerce sales without the pressure of upselling Each of these functions removes friction from the client journey and gives your team back time to focus on delivering high-quality care.
practices for beauty-focused AI adoption
If you want to successfully adopt AI, there are a few things you need to keep in mind.
• Train it like a team member : Your AI should know your brand voice, products and compliance boundaries. Think of it like a team member and take its onboarding seriously.
• Don’t set and forget : Regularly review your AI’s output. It’s essential in industries where clinical integrity really matters.
• Partner with ethical technology providers: Choose AI platforms that allow customisation and compliance controls, not just generic plug-and-play tools.
• Educate your staff : Ensure your team understands what AI is capable of, as well as what it isn’t. This will make them better placed to support AI, rather than fear it.
• Audit for AHPRA : If your AI talks like a clinician or makes any results claims, stop, edit and redirect.
In the beauty and wellness industry, trust is everything. While AI can certainly help build that trust, it’s not here to replace human judgement and shouldn’t pretend to.
As we move further into 2025, look at how you can implement AI thoughtfully, ethically and always with an eye on regulation.
How to spot AI-altered images and why it matters for patient outcomes and compliance with WOODROW
WILSON
, founder of Clinical Imaging.
Aesthetics has always embraced innovation, and AI is no exception. It offers efficiency, a competitive edge, and new ways to grow. But early adoption comes with risk. Increasingly, “super real” images are appearing in campaigns, polished visuals that resemble AI-enhanced stock photography, flawless to the point of fiction.
The issue isn’t AI itself, but how it’s used. As marketing is outsourced and then outsourced again quality control can slip. Ethical lines get blurred. A clear example: a well-known device company using AI-generated models at this year’s ASCD conference. It signals where we’re heading unless boundaries are defined.
AI-generated before-and-afters can create wildly unrealistic expectations. When framed as real results, they mislead patients and undermine informed consent. It’s not just misleading, it borders on deception. Trust is hard-earned in aesthetics, and imagery that isn’t genuine puts the entire field at risk.
Both practitioners need to act. Stock imagery was left unchecked for decades. Let’s not repeat the same mistake with AI. We have a chance to draw a line now before synthetic content becomes standard and real clinical work loses its value.
AHPRA’s Section 4.4 makes it clear: advertising must not create unreasonable expectations. That includes visuals. Avant also reinforces that only images of real patients, treated by your clinic, should be used.
AHPRA’s updated advertising guidelines now explicitly ban the use of AI-generated before-and-after images and ageing simulations for higher-risk cosmetic procedures. These tools are considered misleading, especially when they suggest treatment outcomes that are not based on real patients. This confirms that while AI isn’t just a grey area, it’s now a clear compliance issue.
The guidelines emphasise that only real patients who have
undergone the advertised procedure within the clinic should be featured in promotional material. Imagery must not be digitally altered in ways that distort the likely results, and disclaimers must clearly explain individual variability and the treatment timeline.
This means AI tools that simulate treatment effects or create synthetic perfection, such as smoothing skin, changing facial features, or generating entirely fabricated outcomes, are now firmly off-limits. Even filtered or retouched content that enhances or exaggerates results can fall foul of the rules.
Some platforms are also introducing built-in authentication tools to verify imagery. Our own systems already use this tech, so patients know what they’re seeing is real.
The irony? Poor-quality photography can also be deceptive. Bad lighting, inconsistent angles, or poor documentation can distort results just as much as AI. In a visual industry, the goal should always be clarity and truth.
Media literacy remains low, which is why ethical visuals matter. Standardised, well-captured photography is still the most honest way to communicate what’s possible.
Not sure if an image is AI-generated? Watch for:
• Perfect symmetry (rare in real faces)
• Identical reflections in both eyes
• Unnaturally smooth or hazy skin texture
• A flawless finish with no flyaways, pores, or imperfections
• Fonts or branding that don’t match your clinic’s usual look
Still unsure? Try tools like Undetectable.ai to check authenticity.
AI is moving fast. In a few months, many of these telltale signs could disappear. But in medicine, just because something can be done doesn’t mean it should. Integrity should always come before marketing. Find out more about Clinical Imaging Systems at clinicalimaging.com.au

Running a successful business in the aesthetics and wellness industry means preparing for the unexpected and managing potential risks.
No doubt you work hard to make your spa or clinic a tranquil, welcoming space for your clients. But behind the scenes, running a small business takes strenuous effort and time. Especially when things don’t go according to plan.
Malfunctioning equipment, natural disasters or issues with employees could leave you footing the bill for an expensive claim. In some cases, they could also make it impossible to treat your clients until the situation is fixed. That’s why many spa and clinic owners purchase a Business Insurance Pack to help protect their beauty and wellness business.
A Business Insurance Pack, also referred to as Business Insurance, is often a convenient and economical way to protect your spa or clinic. This flexible coverage option allows you to bundle various types of insurance into a single policy, making it easy to tailor your Business Insurance to suit your specific needs.
What can be added to a Business Insurance Pack?
Business Insurance Pack policies can include cover for your commercial premises, business contents, equipment and stock. These are some of the common covers often added by Australian spa and clinic owners:
For those who own the building where their spa or clinic is located, there’s Building insurance. Building insurance can help if the business premises are damaged or lost in an insured event – such as a fire or storm. There is also cover available for the things inside the spa or clinic. Contents insurance is designed to cover a business’s contents or stock if they are damaged because of an insured event. This could be a natural disaster as defined in the policy wording or due to malicious damage.
Glass insurance
There are plenty of breakable things inside a spa or clinic, such as mirrors, glass and wash basins. Glass insurance offers cover for breakage of internal and external glass and signage at the insured premises, which also covers porcelain and ceramics.
Money and
insurance
Money insurance doesn’t just cover cash. It also covers cheques, money orders and even lottery tickets in the event they are stolen, lost or damaged while on your premises or in transit. But if your spa or clinic is broken into, then money may not be the only target for criminals. Theft insurance helps you replace business items that
are taken from your secured spa or clinic, like stock and equipment. Damage to the building, locks and safes as a result of the theft is also covered.
Business Interruption insurance
What would you do if an unexpected event suddenly shut down your business and you were unable to open your doors?
Business Interruption insurance provides cover for the loss of income and increased costs of operating your business caused by a specified insured event (such as property damage or fire). It’s designed to assist a business in recovering by paying ongoing expenses, which may include things like wages and rent.
There’s always plenty happening in a bustling spa or clinic. There may be treatments booked back-to-back, suppliers and reps coming and going, and employees busily making sure everything is running as smooth as possible. With so many people, it’s easy to overlook potential hazards such as wet floors, unsecured cables, hot equipment or any number of risks. Public Liability insurance is there to help protect a business from claims if a customer, member of the public, or a supplier injures themself or sustains damage to their property as a result of alleged negligent business activity.
BizCover understands that it’s hard work running your own spa or clinic. That’s why they’ve made it fast and easy to buy business
insurance online. You can compare multiple quotes from some of Australia’s leading insurance and get covered in moments. Build a Business Insurance Pack that fits your spa or clinic’s needs so you can get back to running your business.

Defining Our Future: Regulation, Industry Responsibility and Cultural Change
There’s a quiet but powerful shift happening in our industry right now that every professional using lasers or IPL devices in cosmetic settings should be across. It affects not only how we practice, but how we protect our clients, elevate our standards, and shape the future of our sector.
Amid national scrutiny, the NSW EPA is considering legislation to regulate laser and IPL use. This could set a national precedent. ABIC is working closely with ACIL Allen to ensure the industry’s voice is heard and is advocating for broad, inclusive consultation across all professional and peak bodies.
The Reality Check: What do the Stats Say?
It is worth understanding the true size and scope of our industry. There are over 40,000 beauty therapists in Australia, around 3000 in the dermal sector, 5,000 to 7,000 nurses, 1,000 to 2,000 GPs and cosmetic doctors, and about 600 dermatologists.
In any conversation around safety and regulation, it’s essential to look at the actual data and not assumptions about who poses risk in the delivery treatments.
Beauty therapists, the largest share of practitioners performing these services, account for approximately 76 percent of the provider base. Despite being the largest group, they are associated with only 55 percent of reported adverse events. When we compare the percentage of incidents to the percentage of providers, this gives us a normalised injury risk of 0.72.
Dermal therapists comprise around 8 percent and are linked to 20 percent of reported injuries normalised to a risk factor of 2.5. Their higher reported adverse event rate may reflect more structured selfreporting practices within this group.
Cosmetic nurses are approximately 11 percent of the base, with 11 percent of reported incidents with a normalised risk of 1.0.
Doctors, GPs and cosmetic physicians, represent 4 percent with 12 percent of reported injuries, a normalised risk of 3.0 per person. Dermatologists are at 1 percent of the base, with 2 percent of reported
injuries, and a normalised risk of 2.0. While this may sound surprising, it’s worth noting that these groups are often treating more complex cases or using more intensive settings, which may contribute to a higher incident rate.
In comparison to the recent data above collected from HCCC, HCC, tribunal cases and media, historical segmented data displays a consistent pattern emerging with the 2012 Queensland Regulatory Impact Statement recording 416 adverse events reported over 12 months. Of those, only 62 were considered serious, and this data came from a sample of clinics representing roughly 10 percent of the market. When the data was adjusted nationally across an estimated 7 million treatments annually, the rate of reported serious injury dropped to less than 0.009 percent.
These figures do not capture the full extent of adverse events, many of which go unreported, an issue that appears to be widespread anecdotally across our industry
Most reported incidents are minor and temporary, such as burns, pigment changes, redness, or mild blistering. Serious risks like scarring, eye damage, or masking skin cancer are preventable with proper protocols: medical skin checks, pre-treatment assessments, patch testing, protective eyewear, and certified training—underscoring the need for appropriate regulation and education.
ABIC, guided by member feedback, supports fair, balanced oversight that puts public safety first while respecting our sector’s scale and existing skill base. Heavy-handed regulation that ignores this could harm both practitioners and clients.
If new legislations proceed, “grandfathering” must be included to support experienced operators regardless of title or sector, ensuring they have time and affordable, practical training to meet new standards. This is vital to protect continuity of care and safeguard current operators and businesses, especially in regional areas.
Regulators are now considering making suppliers responsible for providing device-specific training and ensuring their lasers and IPL devices meet strict safety and efficacy standards. ABIC also supports this and has introduced SafeSkin Supplier Certification to recognise those meeting the highest compliance levels.
The EPA is exploring ABIC’s SafeSkin Certification as a voluntary selfregulation mechanism, a model that preserves industry autonomy and
upholds best practice standards without imposed legislative control. Imagine an industry-led future where professionals voluntarily step up to national standards through certification. The EPA is assessing its viability based on uptake.
But here’s the challenge, and the opportunity.
Our industry is full of brilliant, passionate professionals. Yet, historically, we’ve struggled to unite under one cause. Unlike other sectors such as finance, retail, or hospitality, who speak to government with one voice, our industry has often been fragmented. That lack of cohesion has at times, slowed our progress and left us vulnerable to poorly designed regulation.
The truth is, our barriers are not just external. They’re internal too.
One of the biggest risks to our industry’s success is misinformation, internal division and the unjustified reporting of peers, clinics and brands to authorities and media driven by personal or commercial motives. This is one of the factors fuelling the negative media coverage which has attracted the attention of regulatory bodies. Consequently, it has sparked a growing number of practitioners and brands to reach out to ABIC, sharing their experiences and calling for a culture shift towards unity and collaboration over division and negativity.
While healthy debate is vital, we must resist the temptation to tear down or spread unverified claims, especially when decisions are being
made that shape our future. It’s time we move away from a culture of negativity, exclusion, or mistrust. When you hear something that sounds damaging or untrue, pause and seek the facts directly from the source. Let those around you know that you’re committed to positivity, truth, and progress, not hearsay or speculation.
As EPA consultation continues, the outcomes may influence a broader national review. Now is the time for industry-wide input.
Suppliers and manufacturers are vital, not just to support stockists, but as regulators examine equipment standards and training.
We also need clinic owners, therapists, and practitioners to share insights and data to shape practical, balanced regulation.
Join ABIC’s Regulation and Education Committees to contribute directly. We’re calling on all clinics, salons, spas, brands, and suppliers to get involved.
The message I want to leave you with is that the future of aesthetics is not something happening to us. It’s something we can build and craft, together. We can move forward with kind collaboration, purpose, clarity, and unity. We just must choose it.

From humble beginnings to
– why Ana from Fresh Skin Clinic has never stopped asking, ‘What’s next?’
Over the past three decades, few clinics have experienced and adapted to the evolution of the professional skincare industry quite like Fresh Skin Clinic in Perth. Founder and clinic owner, Ana Zaza reflects on how dramatically the landscape has shifted since she first opened the doors, sharing insights on building a sustainable business and emphasising why, even in her 30th year, there’s no room for complacency.
“When I first opened the doors of my clinic in Perth three decades ago, the industry looked very different. Treatments were simpler, technology was relatively basic, and skincare was largely built around traditional, surfacelevel solutions. Today, the landscape is driven by science-backed innovations, pharmaceuticalgrade ingredients, cutting-edge devices, and a far more educated consumer. Clients aren’t just seeking pampering – they are looking for real, measurable results backed by clinical evidence.”
Staying ahead of the changes has been a non-negotiable commitment at Fresh Skin Clinic. “Whether it’s attending advanced skin education training days, investing in the latest treatment technologies, or forging strategic partnerships, I have always made it a priority to evolve alongside the industry”, Ana says. “This mindset has not only
kept us relevant but has allowed us to remain a trusted leader in Perth’s advanced skin solutions space. Our clients know they can rely on us to bring them the most up-to-date knowledge, techniques, and technologies”.
Celebrating 30 years in business is a milestone Ana and her team are deeply proud of. From a humble one-treatment-room ‘perfumery’ salon in 1995 to a five-treatment-room premium skin clinic today, Ana is quick to add that longevity in the beauty and dermal industry is no coincidence – it’s the result of grit, consistency and adaptability, “it’s about continual growth, relentless curiosity, and never losing sight of why you started”.
“Reflecting on this journey, my advice to anyone in their first five to ten years of clinic ownership is simple: never stop evolving,” Ana says. “This industry rewards curiosity, passion, and adaptability. I often joke that I’ve been in business since before GST was introduced, having experienced every boom, bust imaginable and a pandemic. What’s clear is that everything is temporary..”
Ana speaks candidly about the dangers of complacency, describing it as the “silent killer” of businesses, particularly as client expectations and technology shift rapidly.
“You have to keep asking, ‘How can we do
this better?’ Whether it’s updating treatment protocols, refreshing your space, or reconsidering your product range – everything has an expiry date.”
Ana believes that lasting success comes from being proactive, not reactive, to market shifts. “Every business experiences peaks and valleys. It’s about staying humble during the highs, learning from the lows, and recognising when it’s time to pivot.”
Ana’s continued presence on the clinic floor reflects her deep commitment to maintaining authentic connections with her clients and team. “People can sense when passion is replaced by routine,” she says. “They want to feel that their therapist is invested in their journey, excited about their progress, and committed to continually enhancing their experience. Thoughtful touches, like refreshed consultation protocols, expanded treatment offerings, more tailored skincare plans, and post-treatment check-ins, can have a profound impact on satisfaction, loyalty, and retention.”
This people-first approach is embedded into the clinic’s DNA. “We’ve built a culture centred on staying at the forefront of clinical innovation without ever losing the warmth and personal connection that makes clients feel seen and valued. Technology can support us, but it can never replace the human touch.”
Ana’s drive to stay relevant and results-focus is what ultimately led the Clinic to introduce a new skincare line – a decision they never take lightly. “After 30 years in business, I’ve learned that every brand we align with must not only deliver exceptional clinical outcomes but also reflect our values, uphold our standards, and support our commitment to long-term skin health,” she says.
Before launching pHformula, Ana and her team undertook extensive training and full product immersion to ensure they could confidently recommend it to their clients. “This step is crucial – we must not only grasp the science behind a brand but also appreciate how it performs in real-world practice, both from a therapist’s and a client’s perspective,” Ana explains.
The decision to introduce pHformula hinged on three key criteria: alignment with Fresh Skin Clinic’s philosophy, high-quality education, and proven clinical results – not just polished marketing. “pHformula exceeded these benchmarks,” she says. “Their science-led systems offer precise, targeted results with minimal downtime, perfectly aligning with today’s modern client who desires visible transformation without disruption to their daily routine. It’s not just about another delivery system for vitamins A and C; it’s about innovation, effectiveness, and efficiency.”
The strong educational support, tailored clinic programs and access to a Perth-based educator have made the integration of pHformula both seamless and successful. “We are excited to offer our clients this advanced resurfacing technology as part of their journey toward healthier, more resilient skin,” Ana adds.
The brand’s philosophy of controlled resurfacing, which strengthens rather than compromises the skin barrier, aligns perfectly with the clinic’s approach to skin treatment. “We see conditions like pigmentation, rosacea, and compromised barriers on a daily basis, so having the ability to create truly individualised treatment programs, not just a one-size-fits-all solution, is crucial,” says Ana.
Since pHformula’s introduction, the response has been overwhelmingly positive. “Each ‘wow moment’ reaffirms that this partnership was the right choice,” Ana says. “It’s re-energised our treatment offerings and expanded our toolkit for real, lasting transformations.”
After three decades in business, Ana’s passion remains driven by the people she serves and the possibilities that lie ahead. “Every client who walks through our doors trusts us with something incredibly personal, their skin, their confidence, their self-esteem,” she says. “Being part of that journey, seeing lives changed through better skin health, never gets old.”
Even after 30 years, Ana remains excited about discovering new ways to elevate client experiences, challenge standards, and shape the future of her Clinic. With pHformula and the team’s continued dedication to excellence, Ana concludes that “Fresh Skin Clinic’s journey is far from over – and with curiosity, resilience, and heart, the future is limitless.”

We sat down with EMILY TURNER , Owner and Dermal Therapist of Soul Skin & Laser, to explore the power of community, client loyalty, and smart business planning in building a successful regional clinic.
What challenges, lessons, and triumphs come with building a boutique clinic in a regional town?
When I opened Soul Skin and Laser in the beautiful coastal town of Ulladulla, I knew I was stepping into uncharted territory. Building a boutique skin clinic in a regional area comes with unique challenges, but it also offers incredible opportunities. I wanted to share the lessons I have learned, challenges I have faced, what I would do differently, and the strategies that helped turn my dream into a thriving aesthetics business.
How do you build strong community connections and raise awareness in a regional area?
One of the key challenges I encountered in a regional area was building community awareness. Unlike metropolitan centres, where advanced skin treatments are more widely known and accepted, many regional clients are only beginning to explore these options. Educating the community on what’s possible and available became essential.
From the early planning stages of my business, I launched a dedicated social media page to introduce and explain dermal therapies, what they are, how they work, and the role of a dermal therapist. This helped ensure that by the time Soul Skin & Laser opened, potential clients already understood the value of professional skin treatments. In those early days, I focused heavily on social media marketing, in-person events, and client education to build trust and form genuine connections.
To further strengthen community ties, I also founded a local Women in Business event, Inspired Women, which created a collaborative and supportive space for female entrepreneurs in our region.
How do you navigate pricing perception in a regional area?
Regional areas often have a different pricing mindset compared to metropolitan cities. I was initially concerned that high-end treatments wouldn’t be financially viable, but I quickly learned that people value quality when they understand the benefits. I have always focused on demonstrating value through results, building trust with my clients and showing clients why professional treatments were worth the investment.
Offering skin memberships allowed clients to commit to long-term skin health treatment plans in a more affordable, structured way, which helped ease pricing concerns while ensuring business sustainability.
What strategies work best when building an aesthetics business in a regional area?
Some of the most impactful strategies that I have implemented to build a successful aesthetics business in a regional area have been the introduction of a structured skin membership program, targeted marketing, and strong community collaborations.
The membership / treatment plan model not only provides my clients with an accessible way to commit to long-term skin health but also creates steady, predictable revenue for the business. This allows me to invest in new technology, advanced education, and premium client experiences. In terms of marketing, I’ve focused on a mix of social media education, email marketing, and word-of-mouth referrals, ensuring that potential clients are exposed to the value of professional skin treatments. Additionally, collaborating with other local businesse, whether through cross-promotions, giveaways, or hosting events like Inspired Women, has helped expand my reach and build trust within the community. These combined efforts have allowed me to create a clinic that not only thrives financially but also fosters deep, lasting relationships with my clients.
My best advice for aspiring regional clinic owners & dermal therapists
Community connection is key: Get involved in your community. Attend events, collaborate with local businesses, and find ways to give back. Trust is everything in a regional area.
Invest in your brand and education: Just because you’re in a small town doesn’t mean you can’t or don’t need to deliver a premium experience. Stay current with technology and training to position yourself as a leader in your field.
Be patient and stay consistent: Growth takes time. Celebrate small wins and keep showing up with authenticity and passion.
ROBYN MCALPINE opens up about her approach to corneotherapy, conscious beauty, and the science-driven skincare journey she leads with dermaviduals.
Many clinics focus on quick fixes, but Skintifix prioritises long-term skin health. Why is this so important to you?
As a clinic, we really don’t pay attention to fads, trends or quick fixes, because we know they don’t create long term, life changing results. And as a business it’s fatiguing to always be investing and training in every trend that breezes through the industry. Instead, we focus on treatments that are sustainable, that deliver results in a way that doesn’t cause greater harm to skin. A short-term fix usually comes at a longer-term consequence. After sixteen years in business, our treatment menu has remained largely true to its core, and that’s because it works. While we’re often told to keep things fresh to maintain client interest, what truly keeps our clients engaged is seeing real results and achieving their healthiest possible skin. That’s what matters most.
How does the corneotherapeutic methodology of dermaviduals shape your treatment philosophy?
Discovering dermaviduals truly felt like a match made in heaven, not just for my business, but for me personally as a skin therapist. I found myself at a crossroads, realising that much of what I’d been taught during my training wasn’t aligning with what I was seeing in the treatment room. I’d been educated about skin health, yet once I entered the salon environment, that knowledge seemed to be disregarded in favour of a so-called “results-driven” approach. But those results often came at the expense of the skin, leaving it sensitised and reactive from invasive treatments that were marketed as skincare. Finding dermaviduals and corneotherapy was a turning point in my career. It not only reinforced my belief in prioritising skin health, but also gave me the tools and products I could truly trust. This “barrier-
first” philosophy now forms the foundation of my treatment approach, and it’s one I wholeheartedly stand by.
Why did you choose to work with dermaviduals, and how has this partnership influenced your clinic’s success?
I wasn’t in the market for a new range when dermaviduals caught my attention. But once I learned what this range stood for, the story and the people behind it, there really was no going back. It was more than a business decision. It felt like learning a new truth that I couldn’t just turn away from. Call it intuition, call it fate, but that became one of the most pivotal moments in the timeline of my business. This helped shape the growth and the direction of my business to one of greater purpose and satisfaction, especially as a hands on skin therapist.
Beyond skincare, you’re passionate about using the beauty industry as a force for good. Can you tell us about Transforming Beauty?
Traditionally we’ve focused on the beauty industry creating life changing results for our clients. We don’t often stop to consider how it supports those who make it their career. Transforming Beauty, is my charity that brings the lifechanging aspects of the beauty industry to girls in India rescued from human trafficking, child labour and abuse. We’re providing skills that rebuild self-worth, confidence and lead to employment that lifts them out of the cycle of exploitation. This is a legacy I hope to leave the beauty industry, one of deep transformation, not only for our clients but in how our skills can have a truly lifechanging impact on the future of young girls.
Creating industry awareness, raising funds in support of beauty teacher wages and running costs, whilst building a sustainable system that supports the learning and growth of students is my current priority. Following this, I hope to invite fellow beauty therapists to join me on a “Transformation Tour” in India. Where therapists will be mentoring, up-skilling and supporting the girls in their beauty training and development. A life changing experience for all involved. Nobody wants to pay more tax than necessary, so we caught up with H&R Block’s Director of Tax Communications, Mark Chapman, to get his expert tips.
The secret to minimising your tax bill? Claim everything you’re entitled to. If you work in beauty, aesthetics, or own a clinic, there are plenty of potential deductions you might not realise you can claim. Taking the time to understand what applies to your work can make all the difference at tax time.
The Golden Rules of Tax Deductions
To claim work-related expenses, you must follow three key rules:
1. The expense must directly relate to your work
2. You can’t have been reimbursed for it
3. You need proof of purchase—receipts, invoices, or statements
H&R Block recommends keeping digital copies of all documentation, as paper receipts can fade or get lost. Storing these on your phone or computer makes tax time much easier.
Tax can be complex, especially for small business owners and independent practitioners. That’s why around 65% of Australians use a tax agent. Doing it yourself might mean missing deductions or claiming incorrectly, either of which can cost you. A tax agent, like H&R Block, will ensure you’re claiming everything you’re entitled to, while giving you peace of mind and potentially a higher return.
1. Travel and Vehicle Use: If you travel between jobs, visit clients, attend expos, or pick up supplies, you can claim those travel costs. This includes car use (via cents-per-kilometre or logbook methods), parking, tolls, and public transport.
Note: daily commuting isn’t claimable unless you’re transporting bulky equipment that can’t be left at work.
2. Equipment and Tools: Work-related tools and equipment, such as injectables kits, beauty devices, or mobile phones, are deductible. Items under $300 can be claimed outright; more expensive items must be depreciated over time. If you operate your own business, you may be able to immediately deduct equipment up to $20,000 per item.
3. Clothing and Protective Items: Uniforms with logos and protective gear like gloves, masks, aprons, or non-slip shoes are all deductible. Laundry costs for your uniform can also be claimed. General clothing is not claimable unless it’s clearly work-specific.
4. Working From Home: If you operate from home, either partially or full-time, you can claim expenses such as electricity, internet, phone use, cleaning, and depreciation of office furniture or tech. You can use the ATO’s 67c/hour fixed rate, but make sure you keep detailed records of hours worked.
If you’re running a full business from home, you may also be eligible to claim a portion of your rent, mortgage interest, rates, and insurance. Keep in mind, this could affect your capital gains tax when you sell your home.
5. Courses and Education: You can claim the cost of courses directly related to your current role, like beauty therapy, massage, nails, or leadership training. Travel, accommodation, and equipment related to your study can also be claimed, provided the education improves your current job skills.
Even seasoned pros miss some of these:
• Membership fees or professional subscriptions
• Trade magazines, journals, and work-related books
• Agency or booking fees
• Mobile phone usage for work (apportioned)
• Attendance at expos or training events
• Work-related handbags, laptop bags or carry cases
• Meal costs during overtime (if paid an allowance)
• The cost of preparing your tax return through a tax agent End of financial year is the perfect time to get your finances in order and maximise your return. Whether you’re a solo beauty therapist or run a thriving skin clinic, knowing what you can claim is essential.
If you’re unsure what applies to your specific situation, speak with a tax professional, who understands the nuances of your industry and can help you get it right.
SARA LAVIS breaks down why Calecim and Exomide are changing the game in skin rejuvenation.
Exosomes are quickly becoming the standout in regenerative aesthetics, and it’s easy to see why. These powerful, cellsignalling particles are making waves for their ability to accelerate healing, boost collagen, and level up skin health. At Skin Collective, founder Sara Lavis is ahead of the curve, having introduced not one but two advanced exosome therapies, Calecim and Exomide, to her treatment menu. We caught up with Sara to chat all things exosomes.
What led you to introduce exosome therapies at Skin Collective, and how are they enhancing your in-clinic treatments?
When choosing treatments at Skin Collective, my focus is always on science-backed innovation that supports real skin health and rejuvenation. That’s why we’ve introduced two leading exosomebased therapies, Calecim and Exomide, each selected for their unique regenerative benefits and clinical results.
Calecim, derived from stem cells, is ideal for post-treatment recovery. It reduces inflammation, boosts collagen, and supports skin repair, making it effective for concerns like fine lines, pigmentation, sensitivity, and scarring, while also enhancing hydration and radiance.
Exomide, on the other hand, delivers fast and long-lasting improvements in skin texture, tone, and elasticity. Formulated with advanced ingredients like peptides and hyaluronic acid, it helps refine pores, even out pigmentation, and accelerate healing, particularly when paired with treatments such as microneedling, laser, or NanoFractional RF. Together, these exosome therapies offer a comprehensive, resultsdriven approach to skin regeneration, helping clients achieve long-term, healthy, and visibly renewed skin.
What makes Exosome Therapy such a powerful and versatile addition to your treatment offerings at Skin Collective?
Exosome Therapy is one of the most powerful and exciting additions to our treatment offerings at Skin Collective because it goes beyond
just improving how the skin looks, it actually supports skin health at a cellular level. The beauty of exosomes is that they help strengthen the skin’s natural barrier, leaving it more resilient, hydrated, and glowing.
What I love most is their versatility. Whether a client is looking to smooth fine lines, brighten their complexion, or simply boost their skin’s overall function, Exosomes deliver scientifically backed results with minimal downtime. And because they pair so well with other treatments, like Meso Needling, Hydra Glow, NanoFractional RF, and even the Lyma Laser, they easily slot into almost any skincare journey. It’s a treatment that truly enhances everything around it.
What results have you seen since introducing exosomes into your treatment plans at Skin Collective?
Since introducing exosome therapy, the results we’ve seen have been truly remarkable. Clients are experiencing faster post-treatment recovery, deeper hydration, plumper skin, a more even tone, smoother texture, and greater firmness.
We’ve also observed noticeable improvements in hair rejuvenation, including healthier scalps, stronger follicles, and increased hair density, with the best results typically emerging around the three-month mark.
These outcomes have allowed us to develop highly customised treatment plans for clients with a range of skin concerns, including impaired barriers, rosacea, inflammatory acne, and scarring. To take this personalisation even further, we incorporate DNA reporting to better understand each client’s genetic predispositions, enabling us to create tailored, science-backed protocols that support long-term skin health and resilience.
We believe that when you treat skin health at a cellular level, the results go beyond just the surface improvements. Strengthening the skin’s foundation allows cosmetic treatments to work more effectively, enhancing facial harmony and delivering more natural, long-lasting results. By prioritising skin function and regeneration, we don’t just enhance aesthetic outcomes – we future-proof skin health, ensuring clients enjoy stronger, healthier, and more radiant skin for years to come.

We sat down with Jade to chat more about why giving back is at the heart of JadeStart’s 10-year milestone and how this free mini course is designed to genuinely support the next chapter of growth for beauty and aesthetics professionals.
What inspired you to create this mini course as part of JadeStart’s 10-year celebration?
To mark 10 years of JadeStart, I wanted to give back to the industry in a way that would genuinely help people. There’s so much content online, but not all of it is useful, and some of it can actually lead people down the wrong path. Coming from a background in insolvency, I’ve seen what happens when businesses don’t have access to the right support. We’re also going through a tough economic period, and I wanted to share practical, proven advice that could help owners stay strong and sustainable. This course is about giving free, reliable tools to uplift the industry and support those who may not otherwise have access to this kind of guidance.
With so many topics to choose from, how did you select the final 10 modules and contributors?
I started by choosing the contributors. Every person featured is someone I trust and admire, not just for their expertise but for the heart they bring to the industry. They’re all givers who genuinely want to help others grow. From there, I narrowed down the topics to ensure we covered the key areas of business, from marketing and sales to finance, operations, and team culture. I wanted every module to offer something practical and relevant, no matter what stage of business you’re in. The goal was to create a well-rounded series that gives you insight across all the areas that matter.
What common challenges do you see clinic owners facing in 2025, and how does this course help solve them?

Innovation has always been at the heart of BTL, a global pioneer in non-invasive aesthetic technology. Known for pushing boundaries and reimagining what’s possible in aesthetic medicine, BTL continues to lead the industry with its relentless pursuit of smarter, sciencedriven solutions. With each advancement, the company not only elevates clinical outcomes but also reshapes the patient experience.
Since the launch of EMFACE in 2022, BTL has consistently raised the bar in facial rejuvenation. As the first device to combine HIFES™ (High-Intensity Facial Electrical Stimulation) and Synchronised Radiofrequency (RF), EMFACE enables simultaneous treatment of both facial muscles and skin. This dual-action technology has redefined non-invasive facial aesthetics by restoring tone, volume, and lift— without needles or downtime.1,2,3.
Initially targeting the forehead and cheeks, EMFACE quickly became a foundational tool for practitioners seeking natural-looking results that support the underlying facial structure. By addressing key elevator muscles like the frontalis and zygomaticus major and minor, the platform introduced a layered, anatomically informed approach that goes beyond surface-level solutions.
In 2024, the innovation continued with the launch of EMFACE Submentum, the world’s first non-invasive treatment to address skin, fat, and muscle in the submental area. This breakthrough further solidified EMFACE as a truly comprehensive facial platfor, capable of lifting, contouring, and rejuvenating from forehead to jawline.
Now, with the introduction of EMFACE Eyes, BTL once again advances the standard of care. Designed specifically for the delicate and expressive periorbital area, the new applicators bring EMFACE’s proprietary dual-energy technology to one of the most challenging zones in facial aesthetics. By simultaneously targeting the orbicularis oculi muscle and surrounding skin, EMFACE Eyes offers a needle-free solution for reducing puffiness, smoothing crow’s feet, and brightening dark circles4, making it a gamechanger for patients seeking a refreshed, rested appearance without surgery.
result is a harmonious improvement that also enhances the efficacy of injectables, by providing a firmer foundation of muscular and dermal support.
The periorbital area is often the first to reveal the subtle signs of ageing, typically from the late 20s. 5 From eyebags and crow’s feet to dark circles, patients frequently express concern about looking tired even when they feel energised. While traditional solutions have focused primarily on the skin, the launch of EMFACE Eyes marks a turning point in periorbital rejuvenation by addressing both the delicate skin and the underlying orbicularis oculi muscle.
We spoke with four leading experts in the field who are already integrating the new EMFACE Eye applicators into their practice. Here, they share their clinical perspectives on what makes this technology unique, and why it’s redefining what’s possible in facial aesthetics.
“The periorbital area is one of the first to show signs of ageing,” says Dr Teixeira. “This is largely due to its unique anatomy and high mobility, which make it particularly susceptible to fine lines, wrinkling, and structural changes over time. Many patients, some even in their 30s, express concerns about looking fatigued despite feeling well, often attributing it to changes around the eyes.”
Dr Teixeira explains that ageing in this region is multifactorial, influenced not only by lifestyle, genetics, and environmental exposure, but also by a person’s medical history and overall health. “One of the more interesting physiological changes is the progressive
thinning and weakening of the orbicularis oculi muscle. As this muscle loses tone and elongates, it contributes to noticeable changes in the eye contour. In combination with reduced skin thickness, fat redistribution or prolapse, and impaired lymphatic drainage, this cascade leads to concerns such as puffiness, dark circles, hollowness, and the appearance of under-eye bags.”
Unlike other modalities that focus purely on the skin, EMFACE Eyes targets the orbicularis oculi muscle to strengthen weakened support structures beneath the skin. “What makes EMFACE Eyes truly unique is that it doesn’t just address the surface,” says Dr Darren. “By stimulating the muscle while tightening the overlying skin, we can visibly reduce the appearance of fat protrusion that causes eyebags, treat the dark circle appearance and address the lymphatic stagnation that leads to puffiness, all without a scalpel.”
Patients are increasingly reporting measurable improvements in skin firmness and overall texture following treatment. According to Dr Robin Chok of Regenesis Cosmetic Surgery, “Lateral Canthal Lines, also known as Crow’s feet are often among the first areas where patients observe visible changes, particularly those seeking alternatives to neurotoxins. The skin demonstrates enhanced firmness, along with improved hydration and elasticity, contributing to a rejuvenated appearance.”
With the addition of the new Eye applicators, EMFACE is becoming a complete facial platform. “The ability to now treat the entire face, from forehead to cheeks, jawline and eyes, makes this device a truly comprehensive solution for facial rejuvenation,” says Dr Andrew. “For patients who aren’t ready for surgery, and who want their treatments to be comfortable and have zero downtime, it’s a game changer.”
“As a Plastic Surgeon, I see the cumulative effects of ageing across all layers of the face, skin, fat, muscle, and bone. These changes are particularly evident around the eyes, where layered degeneration has been difficult to treat without surgery,” Dr Teixeira notes. “In the past, surgical options such as lower blepharoplasty were often the only effective approach for addressing concerns like skin laxity and infraorbital fat pads.”
“However, not every patient is ready, or suited, for surgical intervention. EMFACE Eyes offers a new avenue for patients seeking to improve periorbital tone and contour without incisions, needles, or downtime. While it’s not a substitute for surgery in every case, it expands our toolkit for early intervention and maintenance, helping patients achieve subtle yet meaningful improvements.”
With adoption already growing among top practitioners, this latest evolution of EMFACE is more than just a product update, it’s a strategic expansion of what’s possible in facial rejuvenation. And with BTL’s proven track record of continuous innovation, industry insiders are already watching closely, because something even bigger is on the horizon.
Dark circles are another key concern that EMFACE Eyes addresses by increasing dermal thickness. “The increased skin density helps reduce the shadowing that contributes to a tired appearance,” explains Dr Darren. “It rejuvenates the eye area and gives a more rested, lifted look.”
Rather than replacing injectables, EMFACE Eyes complements them. “Injectables have limitations, particularly when it comes to skin that is thin and when the under-eye area is puffy. EMFACE has been so valuable because it is able to improve the quality of the skin and the underlying muscular support,” says Dr Andrew. “Which is why it actually enhances and extends the results of injectables in my clinic.”

As temperatures drop and humidity levels decline, winter presents a distinct set of challenges for skin health, and an equally valuable opportunity for spas, clinics, and industry professionals to support their clients in deeper, more meaningful ways. For business owners, however, it’s more than just a seasonal pivot: it’s a chance to maximise client retention, increase revenue per appointment and build stronger treatment plans with proven, in-demand technology.
For skincare vendors, device suppliers and clinic operators alike, understanding the impact of seasonal changes on the skin isn’t just good science, it’s smart business.
Winter conditions create a perfect storm for skin barrier disruption. Cold, dry air outside and artificial heating indoors, strips moisture from the skin, weakening its protective functions and increasing sensitivity, inflammation and transepidermal water loss (TEWL). These environmental stressors can exacerbate chronic conditions like eczema, rosacea and certain acne types, leading to an increase in client concerns and a growing demand for results-driven solutions.
Professionals have a critical role to play in both prevention and intervention. It’s during this time of year that strategic, evidence-based treatments and targeted ingredient delivery can set your clinical spa apart, not just by addressing seasonal symptoms, but by positioning skin health as a year-round commitment.
While many clients tend to scale back their skincare routines during the cooler months, winter actually presents the perfect opportunity for more transformative in-clinic treatments. With reduced UV exposure, it’s the safest and most effective time to perform intensive modalities, including resurfacing and pigmentation correction, advanced hydration protocols, and barrier-repair strategies that restore and strengthen the skin.
Hydrafacial’s patented Vortex-Fusion technology delivers a gentle yet powerful resurfacing experience, making it ideal for dry, sensitive, or compromised winter skin. The multi-step process deeply cleanses, exfoliates, and infuses the skin with targeted serums, all in a single treatment with no downtime. This not only leaves the skin instantly smoother and more radiant but also optimises it for maximum absorption of active ingredients.
To further personalise results, Hydrafacial’s extensive booster range allows clinicians to tailor each treatment, whether addressing fine lines, hyperpigmentation, congestion, or inflammation. From brightening formulas, to calming peptides, to firming and skin elasticity; every booster enhances efficacy while maintaining skin comfort. This customisable approach ensures clients see visible results through winter and beyond, keeping their skin healthy, hydrated and replenished all season long.
No two clients present the same during winter, and that variability is a business opportunity. Age, skin type, hormonal shifts, and lifestyle all influence how skin responds to environmental changes. Hydrafacial empowers clinics to customise protocols for each client’s unique concerns while offering enhancement opportunities through combination therapies and home care maintenance.
For clinics, this could translate to:
• Boosted average client spend with add-ons and membership.
• Increased repeat visits with results seen from the first session
• Streamlined protocols that allow efficient staff training and turnover
• Seamless integration into existing service menus with minimal risk
This means improved treatment outcomes, higher client satisfaction, better retention and a stronger retail and service narrative, all of which contribute to long-term business success.
For suppliers and clinics alike, shifting the conversation from aesthetic enhancement to skin health and wellness is a strategic move. Winter skincare provides an avenue to educate clients, build trust and drive engagement, not just for the colder months, but well into the year ahead.
Hydrafacial treatments are a cornerstone to this approach, supporting both clinical outcomes and business growth through their flexibility, efficacy, and strong global client demand. For spa and clinic owners, introducing Hydrafacial isn’t just adding a treatment, it’s investing in a proven platform that elevates client experience, differentiates your business and delivers measurable results to your bottom line.

Could your scalp benefit from the same actives you use on your face? Skelp! expert KAY FITZGERALD explains.
In recent years, the rise in hair loss and thinning has prompted a shift toward holistic care, with growing recognition that a healthy scalp is the foundation for strong, vibrant hair. This evolution has seen skincare ingredients increasingly incorporated into scalp treatments, addressing a range of concerns, including hormone-related changes such as those experienced during menopause.
Why are skincare ingredients being used in scalp care?
The scalp, much like the skin on our face, requires proper care to maintain its health and function.
Clinical Trichologist Kay Fitzgerald explains, “Neglecting scalp health can lead to issues such as dandruff, inflammation, itchiness, irritation, or dryness. It can also result in a build-up of sebum, which may increase levels of Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) on the scalp, a contributing factor to hair thinning in those with male or female pattern hair loss. By integrating skincare ingredients into scalp products, we can more effectively address and minimise these concerns.”
Ingredients like hyaluronic acid, renowned for its deep hydration benefits, help moisturise the scalp and prevent dryness and flakiness. Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) supports the scalp’s barrier function, reducing inflammation and promoting overall scalp health. Meanwhile, antioxidants like Vitamin C help combat oxidative stress, a key factor that can damage hair follicles and hinder healthy hair growth.
Menopause brings hormonal shifts that can significantly affect hair health. As oestrogen levels decline, many experience increased shedding, thinning, and changes in hair texture. The scalp often becomes drier, which can further exacerbate these concerns.
“Addressing scalp health during menopause is crucial,” says Kay. “A hydrated, nourished, and clean scalp creates a healthier environment, helping
to minimise some of the adverse effects hormonal changes have on hair growth.”
The move to incorporate skincare ingredients into scalp care is rooted in a holistic approach to beauty and wellness. Recognising the scalp as an extension of facial skin, it became clear that applying the same level of care could deliver meaningful results. For many of Kay Fitzgerald’s clients, this journey began with personal experiences of hair thinning and scalp concerns, especially during hormonal shifts such as menopause. These challenges sparked a deeper search for solutions beyond traditional hair care, ultimately leading to the integration of clinically proven skincare ingredients into scalp-focused treatments.
Recent innovations in scalp care have led to the development of multifunctional products that support both scalp and hair health in a more streamlined way. One example is Skelp!’s Rehab All-In-One Hair Treatment Spray, which brings together targeted ingredients to care for the scalp while supporting overall hair condition. This treatment spray combines several key ingredients:
• Hyaluronic Acid: Provides deep hydration to both the hair and scalp, enhancing moisture retention and overall hair health.
• Hydrolyzed Quinoa: Forms a gentle film around the hair, offering protection against environmental stressors and aiding in colour retention.
• Jojoba Esters: Deliver lightweight hydration and act as a heat shield, resulting in smooth, frizz-free strands without a greasy feel.
• Hydrolyzed Adansonia Digitata (Baobab) Seed Protein: A vegetable protein that creates a shield against environmental stressors like UV rays and heat, enhancing hair resilience.
By integrating these ingredients, the Rehab All-In-One Hair Treatment addresses multiple scalp and hair concerns, with a collective aim to hydrate, repair and protect the hair, addressing common scalp concerns such as dryness, brittleness, and damage from environmental factors.
CRYSTAL PATEL of Clinica Lase guides
editor (and bride-to-be) Steph through the essential steps of wedding skin prep, revealing what truly works, and what to avoid when marketing to brides.
Planning a wedding is one thing, but preparing your skin for the big day is an entirely different journey. As a bride-to-be who also works in the aesthetics industry, I’ve seen bridal prep from both sides. And here’s what I’ve learned, radiant skin doesn’t happen by accident. It takes time, strategy, and a team that actually listens.
Starting my own skin journey made me think beyond just being a client. From a business perspective, I began wondering, how do clinics position themselves to market to brides? What makes one bridal experience feel personal while another feels like a sales pitch? And how can clinics genuinely connect with brides, grooms, and everyone in between?
To help answer those questions, I turned to Crystal Patel, founder of Clinica Lase.
“It all starts with a thorough skin consultation,” says Crystal. “We want to understand exactly what each client is hoping to achieve. Some want radiant, glowing skin to take centre stage, while others just want a healthy base for their makeup artist. From there, we build a personalised plan that aligns with their timeline and vision. No two people, or skin journeys, are the same.”
For me, the journey began with therapist Melanie, who performed a clinical cleanse and then guided me through a VISIA skin analysis. It was clear this wasn’t just about surface-level concerns, Melanie wanted the full picture. As we reviewed the layers of my skin together, she asked about everything, from past treatments and allergies to lifestyle habits and long-term goals.
Her assessment? My skin was dry, sun-damaged, and showing early signs of melasma and redness, something I’d been trying to mask daily with colour corrector.
So, when should you start your bridal skin prep? Crystal recommends beginning six to twelve months ahead of the wedding. Thankfully, I’m a little over a year out, which gives us space to work through deeper concerns without rushing results.
“We start with more intensive treatments early on,” Crystal explains, “then gradually transition to gentler, skin-conditioning options as the wedding approaches. That way, the skin is calm, glowing, and ready to shine.”
Melanie’s first recommendation for my bridal skin plan was skin needling. With minimal downtime, it fits easily into a busy schedule, and it works. By creating controlled micro-injuries, it stimulates collagen, smooths texture, softens fine lines, and enhances the absorption of active ingredients.
But what impressed me most wasn’t the treatment plan. It was the approach. “Brides and grooms don’t want to be sold to,” says Crystal. “They want honest advice and a personalised plan.”
That same mindset shapes Clinica Lase’s marketing. Instead of pushing packages, they share real stories and education-first content, focusing on trust, relatability, and results. And it works.
“We’re honest about what’s achievable in the timeframe,” Crystal says. “It’s about confidence, not perfection. If something’s not realistic, we explain why and then show what is.”
Personalisation is what sets successful clinics apart when marketing to brides. It’s not about cookie-cutter packages, it’s about care, trust, and creating a journey that feels as special as the big day itself. I’ll be sharing my full results in the next issue. Until then, remember, the best campaigns build connection, address real concerns, and always add value.
Filorga, founded by New Cellular Treatment Factor (NCTF) creator DR MICHEL TORDJMAN , is redefining skincare by bringing clinical innovation to daily use.
Once reserved for the realm of mesotherapy, polyrevitalisation has entered a new era, and this time, it’s available at home. French aesthetic medicine pioneer Filorga has brought its highperformance skincare range to Australia via Cryomed Aesthetics, offering a next-generation solution for clients who want regenerative results without needles.
With decades of clinical research to its name, Filorga was the first French aesthetic medicine laboratory, founded by Dr Michel Tordjman. Originally known for its groundbreaking formula New Cellular Treatment Factor (NCTF), Filorga’s research legacy has now been channelled into a luxury cosmeceutical line suitable for home use.
At the heart of this evolution is New Cellular
Encapsulated Factors (NCEF), a patented complex that concentrates over 50 revitalising ingredients including amino acids, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and hyaluronic acid. The newest iteration, NCEF serum, brings even greater efficacy with only the 10 most essential actives from its NCTF roots, maximised through a novel multilamellar encapsulation system.
What truly sets Filorga apart is its pharmaceutical-grade delivery system. The NCEF complex is encapsulated within multilamellar vesicles, layered structures that mimic cellular membranes. This allows ingredients to bypass the skin barrier more effectively, delivering actives deep into the epidermis with superior bioavailability.
In fact, comparative studies have shown that encapsulated ingredients, like arginine, experience a 54% absorption rate, nearly double the 29% of their free (non-encapsulated) counterparts. This technology ensures not only better penetration but also greater stability and reduced irritation.
As a result, NCEF offers multi-dimensional effects:
• Increased elasticity through stimulation of elastin
• Improved firmness via enhanced collagen I production
• Stronger barrier function through loricrin upregulation
• Enhanced cellular energy with increased ATP synthesis
• Active protection and repair from oxidative stress via NRF2 gene activation
These effects go far beyond surface-level hydration. Instead, they represent a genuine biological shift in how skin repairs, regenerates, and protects itself.
The clinical significance of NCEF has been validated in proteomic studies, where researchers observed the upregulation of 118 skin proteins, including those related to the extracellular matrix (ECM), cellular energy, and structural integrity. Among the most notable? Collagen VI, involucrin, and mitochondrial proteins that contribute to cellular respiration and repair.
Filorga has effectively created a serum that behaves like a skin fitness trainer, restoring balance, reinforcing barrier strength, and optimising cell function at every level.
“Cryomed Aesthetics brings Filorga to Australia, filling a unique gap where innovation meets luxury skincare”
Products like NCEF-Intensive Serum and NCEF-Reverse Cream were designed to complement professional aesthetic treatments such as microneedling, laser, radiofrequency, and injectables. These formulas help maintain and even extend the visible results of in-clinic treatments, while offering clients an elevated daily routine backed by true medical heritage.
For clients who may not yet be ready for aesthetic treatments, or prefer to avoid injectables, NCEF offers an advanced alternative with the kind of transformative results previously limited to the treatment room.
In an industry that’s increasingly moving towards preventative and regenerative skin health, Filorga’s NCEF range provides an elegant bridge between homecare and advanced treatment protocols. Whether you’re supporting skin post-procedure, or offering a high-end product for new clients, this cosmeceutical collection blends luxury with biological efficacy.

Innovation is at the heart of Dermalogica, and Exo Booster marks the next breakthrough in advanced skin renewal. Harnessing cutting-edge exosome technology, this professional-grade booster delivers targeted results—enhancing skin resilience, restoring radiance, and supporting long-term skin health.
Exosomes are microscopic messengers that play a crucial role in cellular communication. They carry proteins, lipids, and growth factors that signal the skin to repair itself, strengthen its barrier, and maintain a youthful appearance. However, as we age, this communication slows down, leading to fine lines, uneven skin tone, and loss of elasticity.
Traditionally, exosomes have been derived from either human or animal tissue; however, through extensive research and clinical trials, Dermalogica PRO has discovered a breakthrough in exosome technology: vegan exosomes derived from Lactobacillus bacteria. This innovation offers superior efficacy compared to both human and plant-based exosomes, making it a groundbreaking discovery in professional skincare.
Lactobacillus exosomes are among the most powerful sources for promoting cellular regeneration and vitality. They work alongside Dermalogica’s own Pro-Resolution Technology, which helps optimise skin recovery, reduce visible signs of ageing, and support overall skin longevity. Unlike many traditional skincare ingredients that focus on surface-level hydration or exfoliation, exosomes work at a biological level, enhancing intercellular communication to create long-lasting improvements in skin health.
Each professional treatment delivers 10 billion skin-rejuvenating exosomes, making Exo Booster one of the most advanced solutions for targeted skin regeneration. It integrates seamlessly into professional treatments and at-home routines, offering key benefits including:
• Accelerates Skin Renewal – Enhances cellular communication to speed up repair, minimising fine lines and wrinkles.
• Strengthens the Skin Barrier – Reinforces the skin’s defences, locking in moisture and shielding against environmental stressors.
• Boosts Radiance and Evens Skin Tone – Supports natural skin renewal to improve clarity and reduce dullness.
• Maximises Treatment Results – Lightweight yet powerful, Exo Booster enhances the efficacy of professional treatments and homecare serums.
• Extended Post-Treatment Home Care – Offers six days of posttreatment skin support, compared to just 1.5 days with humanderived exosomes, ensuring sustained repair and renewal.
In addition to its role in skin renewal, Exo Booster also modulates inflammation—a key factor in premature ageing and a compromised skin barrier function. Chronic inflammation, often caused by environmental stressors, UV exposure, and pollution, can lead to the breakdown of collagen and elastin. By introducing exosomes that actively promote resolutionphase responses, Exo Booster helps interrupt the cycle of inflammation, keeping the skin in an optimal state for repair.
In professional treatments, Exo Booster is applied during targeted Dermalogica PRO protocols, accelerating skin regeneration for visible results.
For homecare, apply after cleansing and toning, before layering serums and moisturisers. Dispense a few drops onto clean fingertips and press gently into the skin, focusing on areas of concern.
Suitable for both morning and evening use, Exo Booster pairs well with advanced serums such as Dynamic Skin Retinol Serum or Smart Response Serum for a personalised, results-driven approach to skin health.
Most anti-ageing treatments focus on hydration or surface-level exfoliation. Exo Booster works deeper, directly enhancing the skin’s natural repair and renewal mechanisms.
It’s vegan, Lactobacillus-derived exosomes provide longer-lasting effects than human or plant-based exosomes, offering sustained support for six days post application. This efficiency makes it one of the most powerful and advanced exosome-powered treatments available.
Additionally, Exo Booster optimises skin’s ability to respond to external stressors. By reinforcing the skin’s communication network, it enhances its capacity to withstand daily environmental damage. This makes it an ideal choice for individuals with compromised skin barriers, post-procedure recovery needs, or those looking to future-proof their skin against premature ageing.
Another distinguishing factor is its biocompatibility and stability. Human-derived exosomes raise ethical concerns and the risk of immune rejection, while plantbased exosomes often lack the structural components needed to effectively influence human skin cells. In contrast, lactobacillus-derived exosomes are both bioidentical and highly stable, ensuring optimal absorption and efficacy in professional skincare. As commensal bacteria, lactobacilli naturally exist on the skin and in the gut without causing harm—in fact, they play a vital role in maintaining overall health. This makes them the ideal choice for Exo Booster, as the skin and body readily accept them.
Exo Booster is free from artificial fragrances, colours, and parabens, staying true to Dermalogica’s commitment to professional-grade skincare. Developed in collaboration with skin therapists and backed by scientific research, it delivers visible, lasting results for all skin types. For those ready to elevate their skincare routine, Exo Booster is the ultimate innovation in skin regeneration.

Dr Bawa shared exclusive clinical protocols and compelling case studies, highlighting significant improvements in scalp health and hair density, particularly in patients experiencing hair loss related to stress, hormonal changes, and GLP-1 medications. His approach demonstrated reduced inflammation and restored hair vitality, all without the need for downtime.
In Australia, CALECIM® has already been integrated into treatment protocols by leading experts including Dr Shobhan Manoharan and Dr Alice Rudd. Both have incorporated PTT-6® into their approach to skin regeneration and post-procedure care, reinforcing the brand’s clinical credibility on home soil. With direct access, Australian clinics can now benefit from CALECIM®’s education programs, marketing support, clinical guidance, and collaborative research opportunities.
CALECIM ® brings more than innovation, it brings integrity. For clinics looking to future-proof their offering with a regenerative solution that’s backed by data and driven by results, CALECIM ® is the name to know.
Exploring the root causes of dehydrated, inflamed, and compromised skin
Dehydrated skin has become increasingly prevalent in clinical practice. Skin professionals frequently observe symptoms such as sensitivity, angiogenesis and redness — indicators of low-grade inflammation. This phenomenon, now referred to as skinflammation, is most often the result of an impaired or weakened skin barrier.
The core components of maintaining skin health and integrity.
The skin’s barrier is made up of four key components, each playing an important role in keeping our skin healthy and protected. First, there’s the physical barrier, which is made up of corneocytes — tough little cells arranged like bricks in a wall. They’re strong and sturdy, acting as our skin’s first line of defence against physical damage. Then there’s the chemical barrier, which you might know as the acid mantle (though these days it’s more commonly called the hydro-lipidic barrier). This layer includes sebum, sweat, and natural moisturising factors (NMFs). Sebum is produced by our sebaceous glands and is made up of things like fatty acids and cholesterol, while sweat comes from our sweat glands and contains salts, waste, and moisture-attracting compounds — the NMFs — that help keep our skin hydrated.
The microbiome barrier is another important player. It lives right on the surface of our skin, nestled in the hydro-lipidic layer, and extends a few layers into the stratum corneum. Below that? The skin is completely sterile. Finally, there’s the immune barrier, where immune cells called Langerhans cells keep watch for harmful bacteria or foreign substances. When they sense trouble, they kick off an immune response — often showing up as redness or inflammation. Together, these four barriers work in harmony to protect, balance, and support the skin.
Among these, the chemical barrier plays a key role in regulating moisture loss from the stratum corneum. When functioning optimally, the skin loses approximately 500–600 ml of water daily through insensible perspiration. This water loss is tightly regulated by the hydrolipidic barrier, which is highly responsive to changes in Trans-Epidermal Water Loss (TEWL). Even a 1% increase in TEWL can prompt the body
to increase sebum production — an immediate defence mechanism designed to reinforce the barrier and prevent further moisture loss.
Skin dehydration doesn’t happen all at once — it’s a gradual process that unfolds in stages, often going unnoticed until symptoms become more visible or uncomfortable.
It typically begins with mild dehydration, which might not be obvious to the client but can be easily picked up by a trained skin professional. As the skin loses moisture, the next stage is tightness — that dry, tugging sensation we often feel. This happens because the corneocytes (our skin’s outer cells) start to shrink, and tiny, invisible tears can form in the epidermis. These micro-tears make it easier for irritants and allergens to penetrate, worsening water loss and barrier damage.
If the skin continues to lose moisture, it can begin to feel rough or uneven. At this point, the corneocytes are so dehydrated that some of them begin to break apart. Though we can’t see it, we can feel it — this is the stage where rough texture becomes noticeable.
The most severe stage is known as xerosis. This is when the skin barrier has essentially broken down. The corneocytes have shrunk significantly and in large numbers, leading to visible cracks, flaking, and irritation. It’s a clear sign that the skin is in distress and in need of serious hydration and barrier repair.
When the skin’s hydrolipidic barrier is healthy, the physical and microbiome barriers also function well. Sebum is balanced, the complexion appears even, and blemishes are minimal. In short, glowing skin starts with a strong barrier. Signs like dehydration, redness or sensitivity often point to barrier disruption — and even issues like pigmentation or breakouts can stem from this.
To help restore balance, light, biomimetic oil-based moisturisers such as the Dr. Spiller Collagen Cream or Rinazell Lacteal Active Substance Cream can be a good addition to any skincare ritual. They reduce moisture loss and provide lasting hydration, helping to prevent the cascade of skin issues that often follow dehydration. Yearly regulatory changes and a growing wave of negative narratives but are we truly protecting patients, or simply creating more confusion?
Since 2021, the cosmetic industry has been operating under a cloud of doubt, fuelled by a narrative that paints practitioners as unsafe, unregulated, and even dangerous. While regulatory reform has long been needed, recent changes have left many practitioners questioning whether these updates are truly about patient safety, or simply a response to mounting media pressure.
The original Four Corners investigation, “Cosmetic Cowboys: The Unregulated World of Cosmetic Surgery,” triggered years of
transformation. Those changes now starting to spill over into the nonsurgical space. As one health regulation consultant put it: “The industry is like the Wild West, but without the sheriffs.”
But who exactly are these “sheriffs”? The consultants and socalled advocates influencing regulation often operate behind the scenes or through headlines. Many in the industry are asking: who holds them accountable? And do they truly understand the realities of clinical practice?
At this year’s Cosmedicon conference, a panel titled “An Industry in Turmoil” explored these issues. While the discussion was broad and balanced, media coverage painted a narrower picture. The Sydney Morning Herald shared snippets that singled out Fresh Clinics, reinforcing an ongoing narrative of non-compliance without providing the full context of the discussion.
What’s often lost in these reports is the genuine dedication of the practitioners behind the scenes. As Dr David Kosenko noted, “The vast majority of people working in aesthetics have a great sense of wanting to provide the best quality and care to the people they see.”
Yet their intent is increasingly met with regulatory roadblocks. “If you reach out to the TGA or AHPRA and ask, ‘Is this the right thing to do?’ the response is often, ‘We can’t give you guidance, you’ll have to figure it out yourself,’” he said. This leaves practitioners navigating a grey zone, where compliance often feels like guesswork.
This sentiment was echoed during the panel. When an audience member asked, “Has anyone here been contacted by governing bodies during the development of these guidelines?” not a single doctor or nurse raised their hand. The silence that followed spoke volumes.
In response, Kate Evans, Head of the Rapid Response Unit at AHPRA, noted that those consulted are simply “those who know that consultation is happening at that particular time.” While candid, her comment raised further concerns about transparency and inclusivity in the process.
AHPRA confirmed that only 150 responses were received during public consultation. Is that truly a large enough sample to reflect the complexity of this issue?
Dr Peter Callan, former President of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons, questions the evidence behind the reforms. “With hundreds of published papers demonstrating the qualityof-life improvements from cosmetic procedures and ongoing confusion around how these treatments are categorised how were these reforms introduced without proper scientific grounding?”
“Rather than driving these changes through emotion, let’s be the academics we are. Let’s base changes on evidence, outcome measures, and research,” he urged.
“In regional hospitals, nurse-led care is essential — often assessing patients in critical condition without a doctor onsite. Yet in aesthetics, we’re not trusted to assess someone’s skin? It doesn’t make sense.”
Kelly also notes that media reports often mention complications without any context, omitting practitioner qualifications or the true rarity of adverse outcomes.
“In our clinic, we treat more than 200 people a week. We’ve seen tens of thousands of patients over the last decade with no adverse outcome, and we’re not the exception. Most clinics are led by nurses who take patient safety seriously. If something goes wrong, it’s our livelihood at stake.”
She also calls out a double standard. “In regional hospitals, nurse-led care is essential, often assessing patients in critical condition without a doctor onsite. Yet in aesthetics, we’re not trusted to assess someone’s skin? It doesn’t make sense.”
We asked Kelly George RN whether she believes the current media portrayal of the non-surgical cosmetic space reflects the full story.
“Absolutely not,” she says. “There are quite literally thousands of cosmetic patients treated in reputable, safe, nurse-led clinics who would happily speak about their longterm positive outcomes.”
“The feedback I’m getting is that patients are more confused than ever. Many are frustrated. Meanwhile, the unsafe clinics don’t follow the rules anyway, so the regulations aren’t targeting the real risk” says Kelly.
Sherilee Knoop, President of the Cosmetic Nurse Association, agrees: “There’s a turf war between faculties that has nothing to do with patient safety. There’s a common feeling that if you disagree or ask too many questions, you may become the subject of the next investigation.”
She adds, “There’s no doubt we need stronger standards and mentorship, maybe even more specific licensing. But we also need balanced reporting and genuine engagement with those delivering safe, evidence-based care every single day.”
Where is the data showing how many procedures are performed safely each year? Where is the patient satisfaction reporting?
In The Sydney Morning Herald piece, of the 16 practitioners who were reviewed, five of them were nurses. For an industry delivering thousands of appointments each week, that sample size raises questions about whether the conclusions being drawn are truly representative.
If patient safety is the priority, then we need real data, real consultation, and real understanding, not selective soundbites or policy shaped by pressure.
Australia’s regulatory overhaul is no longer just a policy shift; its impact is being felt in real time. From solo practitioners to established practices, the financial and emotional toll is mounting and for many, the burden has become unsustainable.
“We’ve seen at least 17 clinics close in the past 12 months alone,” says Sherilee Knoop, President of the Cosmetic Nurse Association. “Not because they were unsafe, but because they simply couldn’t absorb the cost of keeping up with evolving compliance expectations that seem to shift month by month.”
These costs are significant. From legal consultations and reworking marketing materials to product compliance, signage updates, and hours lost to administrative tasks, the resources required to remain compliant are extensive. “It’s not just about being compliant,” Sherilee adds. “It’s about proving compliance in a system where the goalposts constantly move. For small businesses, that’s financially crippling.”
Ironically, those who ignore the rules often face the least scrutiny. “Clinics that advertise illegally or offer unsafe treatments rarely self-report,” she explains. “And with a complaints-based enforcement model, they can fly under the radar while ethical clinics bear the brunt of regulatory pressure.”
This imbalance isn’t just frustrating, it’s demoralising. Many clinicians report feeling disillusioned, unsupported, and fearful of saying the wrong thing.
“You become a target,” says one senior injector who asked to remain anonymous. “If you question the narrative publicly or raise concerns about the process, there’s a real risk you’ll be investigated. Not because you’ve done anything wrong, but because you dared to challenge the dominant voices.”
Even experienced professionals are pulling back from public discussion. They’re rethinking what they share, how they educate, and whether to stay in the industry. “It’s no longer enough to be safe and ethical. You have to be invisible,” they add.
One voice pushing back is Dr Niroshan Sivathasan, a doctor with extensive international cosmetic sector interests and medicolegal experience.
“Part of the reason why the aesthetic field has been misrepresented is because of the widespread failure of the Medical Board of Australia (MBA) to acknowledge the positive impact that cosmetic interventions frequently provide, such as a boost in confidence and social engagement,” he says. “When added to the hyperbolic, media-driven articles which involve more salaciousness than substance, AHPRA then intervenes in an ill-considered fashion.”
“Accordingly, I have a modicum of sympathy for those at AHPRA who are tasked with addressing expectations from government ministers in an arena of loud, emotive representations. However, the result is that both practitioners and patients are failed by the
ill-directed and ill-executed interventions. AHPRA’s failure to include senior doctors actively practising in cosmetic medicine in its discussions has, arguably, been the biggest point of failure.”
Dr Sivathasan’s comments highlight a widespread frustration within the industry: reforms are being shaped by individuals who are disconnected from the treatment room, often without consulting those who truly understand the daily clinical realities.
It’s this passion for change that led him to take further action, spearheading the “The Misdeeds of AHPRA” seminar in Sydney on May 3rd. The event brought together clinicians, legal experts, and policymakers, and politicians, to foster more transparent and inclusive meaningful discussions around regulation.
At its core, this isn’t just an industry issue. It’s a patient issue. Patients deserve safe, ethical care, delivered by trained professionals who feel supported, not penalised, for doing the right thing.
“Patients want to know they’re in good hands,” says Kelly George RN. “But right now, the messaging they’re receiving is that no one can be trusted and that’s simply not true. We’ve worked hard for years to build trust with our patients. We deserve a regulatory framework that supports that, not undermines it.”
There’s a growing consensus that things need to change but not in the way they currently are. Practitioners aren’t calling for deregulation. They’re calling for consultation. For consistency. For clarity. And for a system that protects patients without punishing providers who are doing the right thing.
“It’s time to move beyond the hysteria and start having real conversations,” says Sherilee. “Not just between regulators and media outlets, but with those on the ground. The people who see patients every single day. The people who’ve built careers and clinics around safety, ethics, and care.”
As the conversation around aesthetics continues to develop in boardrooms, on social media, and in the press we must also look inward. Because while the media may be loud, sometimes the most damaging noise comes from within our own ranks.
“Right now, those who profit from division and controversy are louder than us. If we want the public and regulators to trust us, we must first trust each other,” says Steff Milla, Founding Director and CEO of ABIC (Aesthetic & Beauty Industry Council).
It’s a powerful reminder that meaningful progress doesn’t begin with policy alone, it begins within the industry itself. It starts with the way we speak about each other, how we show up in support of our peers, and the integrity we bring to every patient interaction.
If we want change, the narrative must reflect the reality. We can’t afford to wait for others to reshape the story we need to take ownership and lead it ourselves.
Because right now, as compliance pressures mount, it’s the ethical clinics doing the right thing that are feeling the weight, while those who cut corners continue to operate unchecked. That’s a system in need of rebalancing and it starts with us.
With a regenerative-first approach, The Plasma Clinic is transforming hair restoration using Exomide exosomes to support long-term scalp health and hair regrowth.
Hair loss is often treated as a purely cosmetic issue, but at The Plasma Clinic in Melbourne, the team sees it differently. Their regenerative philosophy focuses on treating the underlying causes, starting with the scalp itself.
“We saw a growing need for natural, sustainable alternatives to traditional hair loss medications,” the team explains. “Many clients come to us after experiencing side effects or hitting a plateau with standard treatments. Scalp health is foundational to hair growth, so focusing our regenerative expertise in that area was a natural evolution.”
The clinic has long worked with PRP (PlateletRich Plasma) and PRF (Platelet-Rich Fibrin) for skin regeneration, so expanding into scalp-focused protocols was a logical step. By addressing scalp inflammation, circulation, and follicle nourishment, their treatments help lay the groundwork for stronger, healthier, and more consistent hair growth.
At the core of their approach is Exomide Scalp, a breakthrough solution powered by exosome technology. Exosomes are microscopic, extracellular vesicles derived from stem cells, and they function as powerful messengers.
“Think of it as next-gen cell-to-cell messaging,” they explain. “These exosomes carry growth factors, peptides, and anti-inflammatory agents that interact directly with hair follicle stem cells and surrounding tissues.”
When applied to the scalp, Exomide helps regulate inflammation, stimulate blood flow, and activate the hair growth cycle, specifically the anagen phase, where new hair is formed. Unlike topical serums or oral medications, exosomes communicate on a cellular level, triggering natural regeneration from within.
The result? A deeper, cellular approach to hair regrowth, one that doesn’t rely on masking symptoms but instead restores the scalp’s environment for long-term resilience.
At The Plasma Clinic, the most frequent concerns patients present with include androgenetic alopecia (male and female pattern baldness), diffuse shedding caused by stress or illness, and post-partum hair loss. Many of these clients have already tried prescription medications, overthe-counter serums, or even hair transplants with limited success.
“The response to Exomide Scalp has been overwhelmingly positive,” the team says. “Clients often report less shedding, a calmer scalp, and visible improvement in scalp texture within just a few weeks. Hair regrowth typically starts around the two to three-month mark, especially when combined with supportive treatments like microneedling.”
It’s this balance between visible improvement and gentle, non-invasive delivery that’s made Exomide a standout for clients seeking more natural yet effective solutions.
Every Exomide protocol begins with a comprehensive consultation. The Plasma Clinic takes a diagnostic-first approach, assessing scalp health through a close analysis of follicle density, redness, inflammation, and the pattern or distribution of loss.
“We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all protocols,” the team notes. “Each client’s scalp tells a story, our role is to read it accurately and develop a targeted plan.”
In addition to clinical observation, they consider medical history, hormone levels, stress, and lifestyle factors to create a tailored program. For many, this includes pairing Exomide with other regenerative techniques, including dermal stimulation, LED light therapy, and topical hair support products.
Since introducing Exomide Scalp into their offering, The Plasma Clinic has seen impressive transformations, not only in visible hair regrowth, but also in the overall improvement of scalp health.
“What’s impressed us most is the consistency of improvement in scalp condition—less redness, flaking, and irritation,” they share. “We’ve seen new terminal hairs emerge in clients who had experienced years of stagnant growth.”
Postpartum women and men in the early to mid-stages of pattern hair loss have seen especially strong results. When Exomide is combined with dermal stimulation and ongoing at-home care, the outcomes are not only visible, they’re sustainable.
“It’s changed the way we approach hair restoration. We’re no longer reacting to hair loss—we’re preventing it by restoring the scalp from the inside out.”

Queensland Health’s updated guidance brings big changes to how Schedule 4 medicines can be purchased, stored, and administered—here’s what every clinic needs to know.
In April 2025, Queensland Health released an updated fact sheet clarifying the legal obligations surrounding the prescribing, purchasing, and administration of Schedule 4 (S4) cosmetic injectables. This follows the initial December 2024 guidance and reflects ongoing efforts to ensure compliance within the cosmetic injectables industry.
Understandably, these updates have sparked concern and in some cases, confusion among Queensland-based cosmetic clinics, particularly those whose current models may not meet the clarified legal requirements.
To help address these concerns, Queensland Health published a dedicated FAQ sheet on April 15, aiming to answer common questions and provide further clarity on how the legislation applies in practice.
1. Registered Nurses (RNs) Cannot Purchase or Order S4 Medicines
The fact sheet reiterates that RNs are not authorised to buy or order stock of S4 medicines for cosmetic use, even via third-party websites or wholesalers regardless of whether payment is made. Ordering is considered “buying” under the legislation.
2. A Doctor Must Have Custody and Control of Medicines Onsite
Doctors cannot purchase S4 stock for a clinic where they do not have exclusive custody and control of the medicines. Stock must not be supplied to RNs or other unauthorised staff for clinic storage or use.
3. Onsite Doctor Presence Not Mandatory for Prescribing, But Must Be Compliant
Doctors or Nurse Practitioners can consult via telehealth and lawfully prescribe S4 medicines, but the overall model still must comply with regulations around dispensing, custody, and control of medicines.
4. Dispensing Is Restricted to Pharmacists and Doctors
Only pharmacists and doctors are legally permitted to dispense S4 medicines in Queensland. Medicines must be lawfully prescribed, obtained, and labelled according to the Medicines and Poisons (Medicines) Regulation 2021 and the Commonwealth Poisons Standard.
5. RNs May Only Hold Individually Dispensed Medicines for Clients
While RNs cannot hold general stock of S4 medicines, they may hold
individually dispensed medicines prescribed and labelled for a specific client, this must still align with the legislation and professional practice standards.
These clarifications have significant implications for nurse-led cosmetic clinics in Queensland. Clinics must ensure that their operational models align with the updated guidelines to remain compliant. This may involve restructuring business practices to ensure that only authorised individuals handle S4 medicines and that all prescriptions and administrations are conducted within the legal framework.
Despite their intent to operate safely and compliantly, many clinics now find themselves in a grey zone due to how the regulations are being interpreted. Key concerns include:
1. Telehealth Prescribing vs Onsite Presence
2. Stock Possession vs Dispensed Products
3. Doctor Ownership Without Onsite Control
4. Existing Stock Management
5. Use of Third-Party Ordering Platforms
The Real Cost: Financial & Mental
Financial Costs:
• Restructuring to include full-time medical oversight
• Pausing treatments, losing revenue, and facing potential client dissatisfaction
• Legal advice and compliance audits
• System upgrades for medicine handling and tracking
Mental & Emotional Costs:
• High levels of stress and uncertainty
• Burnout among clinic owners and practitioners
• Concerns around public perception and professional credibility
Queensland Health has pledged to work with the cosmetic industry on safer, compliant practices, but for many nurse-led clinics, the way forward remains unclear. Stronger collaboration is now essential to protect patients and support businesses alike.

Tucked away at the tip of the Mornington Peninsula, just beyond the vibrant Sorrento village, is Marlo Spa, a peaceful retreat nestled within the beautifully restored and historic Hotel Sorrento. Purposefully created through a collaboration between spa founder Marlo Johnston and the esteemed Pitt family, the space is a harmonious blend of heritage, intention, and modern wellness.
Grounded in the authentic principles of Ayurveda, Marlo Spa offers more than relaxation, it’s a space designed with practicality and purpose for the modern woman. With eight treatment rooms, a steam room, advanced skin therapies, waxing, nail care, and makeup services, it’s a true one-stop destination for both rejuvenation and routine self-care.
From the moment I walk in, I know I’m in good hands. The grounding scent of camphor instantly soothes, easing nervous tension and emotional overwhelm, a welcome reprieve before a house move the very next day. My nervous system, on overdrive from a week of multi-tasking and last-minute to-dos, starts to soften. I’m warmly greeted by Marlo herself, a seasoned therapist with over 30 years of experience in the industry.
I’m booked in for the Pichu treatment, a 90-minute Ayurvedic ritual designed to calm the nervous system and ease physical tension. Since I’d just had my hair done, Marlo thoughtfully swaps the scalp massage for a soothing foot bath and warm tea. As I begin to unwind, we chat about areas of focus and how the herbal oils will support both healing and relaxation. After drying my feet, she explains the level of undress and steps out to let me settle in. When she returns, she gently places a warm compress on my lower back, a quiet, anchoring gesture that signals the start of something deeply restorative.
The moment warm oil is drizzled onto my calves and feet, something shifts. The pace slows, my breath deepens, and my mind begins to settle. This is no ordinary massage. The treatment begins with an abhyanga massage, where warm, medicated oils are rhythmically applied across the body in flowing, purposeful strokes. It’s rhythmic, layered, and intentional. Oil-soaked compresses follow, their steady warmth sinking into areas of builtup tension. Then come light tapotement techniques to awaken the muscles, followed by the gentle activation of marma points, Ayurvedic energy centres where muscle, bone, ligament, and nerve pathways meet. As Marlo explains, these points are powerful channels that help restore flow, clear blocked energy, and create space for emotional clarity.
At times, it feels like the stress is being carefully drawn out of my body and gently massaged away. As Marlo moves up my back, she focuses on trigger points around the hips and shoulders, areas holding tension I didn’t even realise I had.
After turning over, the same level of care is brought to the front of the body, the sides of my legs, feet, and ankles, all treated with slow, firm pressure and precise attention.
But it’s the tummy massage that stands out. With intuitive, flowing movements, Marlo works through the abdomen, hips, and side body, creating space under the diaphragm that feels both physically and emotionally releasing. She gently applies pressure to small trigger points on the right side of my stomach, explaining how this area supports natural rhythm and grounding, what she refers to as your “Pause.” She also activates a point at the solar plexus, connecting the treatment to the nervous system, digestion, and emotional resilience.
I’m surprised by how tender my hands, forearms, and clavicle area feel, quiet reminders of where we carry the invisible weight of our daily lives.
To finish, Marlo delivers a deeply comforting neck and shoulder massage, somehow reaching between the shoulder blades with ease while I’m lying on my back. A warm towel is used to gently remove only the excess oil, with a recommendation to leave the rest on to allow the herbal actives to continue nourishing the skin long after I leave.
Even a week later, I still feel a grounded sense of clarity and calm I haven’t experienced in months. When I feel burnout creeping in again, I’ll know exactly where to go, back to Marlo.
Tucked into the undulating hills of Tallebudgera Valley in the Gold Coast hinterland, Gwinganna Lifestyle Retreat is no ordinary wellness escape. For over 15 years, it has quietly led the charge in holistic wellbeing, regenerative healing, and digital detoxing, offering sanctuary to those needing to press pause, reset their rhythm, and reconnect with themselves.
We arrived late on a Sunday afternoon to gentle rain and were welcomed warmly by General Manager Mel, whose grounded presence immediately set the tone. After a private onboarding consultation, a personal moment to set our intentions, it became clear why Gwinganna has such a loyal following. My own goal? To reset. To refresh. And most importantly, to digitally switch off, a true luxury in 2025, which already feels like a marathon.
The immersion begins quickly. There’s a welcome talk with gentle but fascinating education (BMI, for example, is debunked as a misleading measure of health), followed by a tour of the 500-acre property and a 31-page wellness menu that reads like a love letter to mind-body medicine. Equine therapy, acupuncture, cupping, lymphatic drainage, reiki, Traditional Chinese Medicine, the offerings are vast and beautifully curated. But the treatment that stole our hearts was the Vanessa Megan Metamorphosis Facial, an 80-minute indulgence of lymphatic movement, sculpting gua sha, acupressure, and scalp massage. It’s not just a facial, it’s a complete nervous system recalibration.
Woken by gentle rain and the quiet arrival of a tropical cyclone, affectionately named Alfred, we leaned into the stillness. Nestled in a timber-clad eco-cabin with a balcony bathtub, the space wrapped us in warmth and calm. Outside, wallabies grazed peacefully, some with joeys in tow. The whole scene felt dreamlike.
or how protein-fibre pairings can steady mood and energy, stay with you long after you leave.
The days unfold with gentle rhythm. Activities are optional and varied, from sunrise Qi Gong and guided nature hikes to strength training, yoga, and deeply restorative therapies. One morning, after a breakfast of miso scrambled eggs and sweet cherry tomatoes, we joined instructor Ben in the gym. His class moved seamlessly through strength, stretch, and an energising spin session, just enough to fire up the endorphins. Afterwards, the call of the infrared sauna and rainspeckled pool was irresistible. A perfect moment of sensory bliss.
Gwinganna’s grounds are alive with intention, rich in native flora, curious fauna, and a quiet reverence for nature. Meals are both nurturing and educational, crafted from seasonal produce and vibrant herbs harvested from the on-site garden. Each dish is a masterclass in nourishment, with colourful plates designed not just for flavour, but for function. Simple insights, like avoiding water with meals to aid digestion,
What sets Gwinganna apart is not just its size, though with 37 treatment rooms and the largest spa in the Southern Hemisphere, it’s impressive, but its unmistakable sense of purpose. The wellness zone is expansive, with everything from an LED bed to infrared saunas, a cold plunge, and steam room. Yet, the true magic lies in its soul.
Here, your nervous system is the guest of honour. Each stay unfolds uniquely, you might spend one day in high-energy movement and the next in deep stillness, and both are equally embraced. This is a place that honours the ebb and flow of being human.
In a world fuelled by hustle and hyper-connectivity, Gwinganna offers a gentle rebellion. It’s a reminder that slowing down is essential, that nourishment goes beyond food, and that true healing happens in layers. Sometimes with a misty mountain view. Sometimes with wallabies grazing just outside your door.
If 2025 already feels like too much, Gwinganna might just be the reset you didn’t know you needed.
How two survivors turned their health battles into a purpose-driven brand redefining natural inflammation support.
At just 34 years old, Trent Scanlen was diagnosed with lymphoma, a life-altering moment that shifted his perspective and ignited a deep passion to help others navigating cancer treatment and recovery. “We’ve got prescription medications that damage other parts of the body, and then there are people who simply live with the pain or stop doing the things they love because of it,” he says. Determined to find better options, Trent began exploring natural remedies alongside conventional treatments, sparking innovation in a space where many mainstream solutions fall short, particularly in managing pain and inflammation more gently and sustainably.
ease joint pain, support heart health, protect against cellular damage, and even enhance mood, brain function, and digestion. However, curcumin’s natural form is notoriously difficult for the body to absorb, leading them to develop a more effective, bioavailable solution through their wellness brand, KURK.
What sets KURK apart from other curcumin-based supplements is its Micelle+ technology, which significantly improves curcumin absorption. “We’ve recreated micelles using clean, plant-based compounds to solve one of the biggest problems with curcumin, its poor absorption,” explains Trent. “Curcumin is a crystal, so it doesn’t dissolve in oil or water. Micelles are a natural structure the body uses to absorb tough compounds, and we’ve replicated that, mechanically, not chemically, using only natural plant oils. Most micelle curcumin products on the market are chemically made, but ours is different. We believe we’ve created the most natural and absorbable form of curcumin, blended with some really exciting supporting compounds.”
Inflammation plays a vital role in the body’s immune response, helping to fight off illness and protect tissues from damage. But as Trent explains, when inflammation becomes chronic or dysregulated, something that often happens with age, it can start doing more harm than good. “Over time, inflammation that once helped the body starts to work against it, attacking healthy tissue and contributing to long-term pain and health issues,” he says.
His co-founder, Dr Harrison Weisinger, known to many as Dr Harry, shares a similarly personal journey. By the age of 40, he had been hospitalised more than 30 times and was diagnosed with both Crohn’s disease and later, lymphoma. These experiences became the driving force behind his commitment to creating science-backed, accessible wellness solutions that support long-term health.
One ingredient that stood out to both Trent and Dr Harry in their research was turmeric, a golden root long revered in traditional medicine for its healing properties. Rich in curcumin, turmeric is known for its potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. It can help

“We believe we’ve created the most natural and absorbable form of curcumin”
That’s exactly why KURK was created. Formulated to address chronic inflammation at its root, KURK uses the natural power of curcumin to help calm the immune response, without relying on IV therapies or pharmaceuticals. “Our goal is simple: to stay stronger for longer,” says Trent. “We want to support joint movement, healthy ageing, and overall wellness in a completely natural way.”
KURK’s mission to deliver natural, effective wellness solutions has attracted a powerful network of supporters, including high-profile investors like Bill Moss, Andrea Horwood, Tom Hardy, and Tinie Tempah. “We’re all driven by the same goal: to age better and stay stronger for longer, naturally,” says Trent.
Following the success of KURK’s original formula and the launch of their vitamin D3K2 breath spray, the brand has expanded its range with KURK Sport, a clean, great-tasting recovery blend featuring micellar curcumin, electrolytes, and echinacea. “It’s designed to support active lifestyles and is safe for long-term use,” explains Trent. With more products in development, KURK continues to priorities innovation. “If it’s not different or better, we don’t release it,” he adds. “But we’ve got some exciting things on the way.
Clinical Nutritionist EMMA CLAIRE explains the internal effects of chronic stress, and how to support your clients from the inside out.
Stress is a natural part of life, but when it becomes chronic, it can wreak havoc on the body in ways you may not realise, including your hair, skin, and nails. While spa treatments and skincare routines are invaluable for maintaining the external appearance of these areas, understanding the internal factors is equally important.
As a Clinical Nutritionist, I see how often stress is an underlying factor in many of my clients’ concerns. Here’s how stress impacts your hair, skin, and nails from the inside out, and how you can guide your clients toward better outcomes by addressing the root causes.
When we’re stressed, the body releases cortisol, our primary stress hormone. While cortisol plays an essential role in the “fight or flight” response, elevated levels over time can disrupt normal bodily functions, including those that keep our skin healthy.
High cortisol levels not only impair skin barrier function but also disrupt gut barrier integrity. This gut disruption can lead to increased inflammation throughout the body, which often manifests in the skin as increased sensitivity, dryness, and conditions like eczema, acne and psoriasis by increasing inflammation and reducing the skin’s ability to repair itself.
Hair loss or thinning is one of the most noticeable effects of chronic stress. Cortisol disrupts the hair growth cycle, shifting hair follicles from the active growth phase (anagen) to the resting phase (telogen). This results in increased shedding and reduced regrowth over time. Stress also compromises blood flow to the scalp, meaning fewer nutrients reach hair follicles, weakening their strength and vitality.
Stress can show up in the nails as brittleness, ridges and slow growth. When we’re chronically stressed, two key issues arise: our bodies demand more nutrients to cope with the stress response, while simultaneously, stress compromises gut function and reduces our ability to absorb these vital nutrients. This double impact particularly affects biotin, zinc, and iron levels, which are crucial for nail strength and resilience. Additionally, stress-induced changes to gut bacteria can interfere with nutrient synthesis and absorption, further compromising
nail health. If you notice these symptoms, they’re often a sign that both your internal health needs attention.
While treatments and topical solutions can work wonders externally, you can enhance your clients’ results by helping them consider what’s happening internally. Nutrient-dense foods and supplements are powerful tools to mitigate the effects of stress on hair, skin, and nails.
• Grass-Fed Organ Meats: Beef liver, in particular, is nature’s multivitamin, offering an abundance of bioavailable vitamins A, B12, and iron, all essential for regulating oil flow, collagen production, oxygen transport, and cell regeneration. For clients who may struggle to integrate nutrient-dense organ meats into their diet, supplements like Cell Squared Freeze-Dried Capsules offer a convenient alternative. These capsules are made from 100% organic, grass-fed beef liver and other nutrient-rich organ meats, freeze-dried to retain maximum nutritional value. They’re a practical way to provide the body with essential nutrients without being a master chef in the kitchen.
• Fatty Fish: Wild-caught salmon and sardines are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which help reduce inflammation and maintain skin elasticity.
• Gut Supporting Foods: Fermented vegetables such as sauerkraut and kimchi (rich in diverse probiotics), organic grass-fed bone broth (containing collagen and gut-healing amino acids), and prebiotic-rich foods such as garlic, onions, asparagus, and Jerusalem artichokes that feed beneficial bacteria and help maintain healthy nutrient absorption.
• Activated Nuts and Seeds: Almonds, sunflower seeds, and chia seeds are high in vitamin E and zinc, which support wound healing and protect against oxidative stress.
• Pastured Eggs: Rich in biotin, a key nutrient for strong nails and hair.
Encourage clients to manage stress through mindfulness, good hydration and sleep, and regular exercise, simple habits that support overall wellbeing. By pairing your external expertise with guidance on internal care, you’ll provide your clients with a comprehensive approach to beauty and wellness.
With wearable vitamins at its core, BonPatch is redefining how we support sleep, stress, and hormonal health, no pills, just patches.
In a wellness world overflowing with powders, pills, and complicated routines, BonPatch offers a refreshing shift, wearable vitamins designed to simplify self-care. Founded on the belief that health support should be effortless, BonPatch uses transdermal technology to deliver gentle, targeted results, right through the skin. We sat down with founder Nicole as she shares the inspiration behind the brand, the science driving each patch, and why she believes small, consistent habits are the key to lasting wellbeing.
What inspired you to create BonPatch, and how does it reflect your personal wellness philosophy?
BonPatch came about through a genuine interest in creating simpler, more intuitive ways to support wellbeing. I’ve always believed that health doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. Our patches are designed to slot easily into everyday life, no pills, no preparation, just gentle, targeted support when you need it. That simplicity is a big part of my wellness philosophy: small, thoughtful actions that make a meaningful difference over time.
BonPatch offers a range of products targeting various aspects of health, from sleep to detoxification. Could you explain the science behind how these patches deliver their benefits?
Our patches use transdermal delivery, which allows ingredients to be absorbed gradually through the skin and into the bloodstream. This method bypasses the digestive system and can help support more consistent uptake of the active compounds. Each formulation is carefully selected based on research and known efficacy, our SLEEP patch, for instance, contains valerian extract and passionflower, both known for their calming and sleep-supportive properties. We work with health professionals to ensure each product is balanced, effective, and safe.
Transitioning from your previous endeavours to launching a wellness brand is a significant shift. What challenges did you face during this process, and how did you overcome them?
Dr Will Guo at his clinic in Sydney
One of the key challenges was getting across the detailed regulatory and
production side of developing wellness products. From formulation to labelling and ingredient sourcing, it was important to make sure we were meeting high standards at every stage. I worked closely with industry experts and built a strong team to guide the process. Staying engaged with our early customers also helped shape and refine the range, we’ve always placed a lot of value on feedback and transparency.
With the wellness industry continually evolving, how do you ensure BonPatch stays ahead in terms of innovation and meeting consumer needs?
We’re constantly listening, to our customers, to practitioners, and to what’s emerging in global wellness research. People are becoming more proactive and informed about their health, and we see that as a positive thing. Our approach is not to follow trends for the sake of it, but to respond to real needs with thoughtful, evidence-informed products.
Looking ahead, what are your aspirations for BonPatch, and are there any new products or initiatives on the horizon that you’re excited about?
We’re excited to be launching two new patches this year: LOVE, which supports mood and emotional wellbeing, and MENOPAUSE, designed to help women navigate hormonal shifts more comfortably. Both products have been in development for some time, and we’re really looking forward to sharing them. We’re also preparing for our launch into the US market, which is a big step for the brand. More broadly, we’ll continue focusing on creating practical, well-considered products that offer genuine support and fit naturally into people’s daily lives.
The RIISE app, created by sound-healing facilitator, breathwork and meditation guide TANYA ALI-JANI , supports nervous system regulation and emotional wellbeing through grounded, soul-led practices. We sat down with Tanya to learn all about her remarkable approach to healing and why RIISE is resonating with so many.
For Tanya Ali-Jani, the creation of RIISE The App wasn’t part of a grand plan, it was a calling. A natural evolution of her own healing journey, born from deep transformation.
“I spent most of my life in survival mode,” Tanya shares. “Always running on stress, never really feeling safe in my body. It wasn’t until I had a profound experience during meditation that everything shifted.” That moment of peace, something she had never known, opened a desire to understand and share it.
She began exploring breathwork, meditation, and sound healing. “It was beyond words, but I kept searching for ways to bring it into my everyday life.” Before long, Tanya began sharing these practices with friends, wanting to pass on what helped her feel lighter, clearer, and more connected.
Then something beautiful happened, those friends began experiencing their own shifts. “It became clear these practices weren’t just helping me. They were creating change for others, too.”
This was the seed that grew into RIISE, a sound-healing, breathwork, and meditation app built from lived experience. “The app is a continuation of my journey, but it’s also something bigger, offering access to practices that support nervous system regulation in a grounded way.”
RIISE is intentionally designed to be welcoming for anyone feeling disconnected, anxious, or overwhelmed. “There’s no pressure to be perfect. These tools meet you where you are, they’re about coming back to yourself, gently and with compassion.”
On the RIISE app, breathwork and meditation are key pillars, accessible tools to help shift out of survival mode and into balance. “These practices are pathways home,” Tanya
explains. “They help the body and mind soften, release, and reset.”
Breathwork, in particular, played a major role in Tanya’s own healing. “It helps clear what’s been stored in the body, grief, fear, tension, sometimes without us even realising it.” By using specific breathing patterns, the parasympathetic nervous system activates, moving the body into rest and repair mode.
“It’s like hitting a reset button. You feel safe enough to just be.”
Meditation complements this by anchoring us in the present. “Together, they build resilience, not just for moments of calm, but as a new baseline for how we live.”
For Tanya, sound healing holds a profound power. “It bypasses the thinking mind and speaks directly to the nervous system and soul.”
Through sound, stored emotions can surface and release, often experienced as warmth, tears, or tingling. “It’s not about analysing. It’s about allowing. Sound holds space for that.”
What’s inspiring about Tanya’s work is how it bridges ancient healing practices with modern neuroscience. “These practices have existed for thousands of years,” she says. “Now, science is showing us why they work.”
From breathwork influencing the vagus nerve to sound shifting brainwave states, RIISE honours both the spiritual and scientific aspects of healing. “It lives in that intersection, rooted, real, and research-supported.”
At its core, RIISE makes healing feel accessible, no matter where you are in your journey. You don’t need to be a seasoned meditator. It’s for anyone feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or disconnected.
“There’s no perfect way to show up,” Tanya says. “You just need the willingness to be with yourself.” That’s why RIISE offers short, guided practices that fit easily into your day, whether you’re navigating stress, grief, or simply seeking a moment of calm.
Menopause is a natural and powerful phase of life, but it can feel like your body is running on a script you didn’t write. From hot flushes and sleep disruptions to mood swings and weight changes, the physical and emotional symptoms can be overwhelming. The good news? What you eat has a direct and measurable impact on how you experience menopause.
Understanding the Hormonal Shifts
As oestrogen and progesterone levels begin to decline in perimenopause and menopause, women often experience a ripple effect across the body. These hormonal changes can influence everything from metabolism and bone health to brain chemistry and cardiovascular function. But by nourishing your body with specific nutrients, you can help regulate hormones, reduce inflammation, and support your nervous system.
Eat to Stabilise, Strengthen and Soothe:
• Balance blood sugar: Unstable blood sugar can intensify hot flushes, fatigue and mood swings. Focus on low glycaemic index carbohydrates, think oats, quinoa, legumes and sweet potato, and always pair them with a healthy fat or protein to help slow absorption and reduce insulin spikes.
• Support liver detoxification: Your liver helps clear used hormones from the body. Support it with cruciferous vegetables (such as broccoli, kale and Brussels sprouts), bitter greens (like rocket), and lemon in warm water each morning. Herbal teas like dandelion root and green tea also assist with natural detoxification.
• Prioritise healthy fats and protein: These are the building blocks for hormone production and regulation. Include oily fish (salmon, sardines), nuts, seeds, avocados, and lean proteins such as organic eggs, organic chicken, and legumes to help maintain energy and muscle mass as oestrogen levels decline.
• Calcium and Vitamin D: Bone density decreases postmenopause, so ensure you’re getting enough calcium-rich foods like leafy greens, sardines, and almonds, along with safe sun exposure or supplementation for vitamin D.
• Magnesium: Supports nervous system regulation and sleep. Find it in pumpkin seeds, leafy greens and dark chocolate (yes, really).
• B Vitamins: Help manage mood and energy, particularly B6 and B12, found in eggs, lentils and grass-fed meat.
“by nourishing your body with specific nutrients, you can help regulate hormones, reduce inflammation, and support your nervous system.”
• Phytoestrogens: These plant-based compounds mimic oestrogen in the body and may ease symptoms. Include fermented soy (like tempeh), flaxseeds, and legumes.
When I entered perimenopause at 39, I was caught off guard. I had anxiety, poor sleep, joint aches and waves of sadness, before my periods even began to shift. Learning to nourish my body differently was transformational. Now, I help other women find their calm through food, clarity through routine, and strength through knowledge. Menopause doesn’t have to feel like a loss. With the right nutrition and lifestyle choices, it can be a powerful invitation to connect with your body in a new and supportive way.
How one founder’s personal journey became a global movement in conscious, highperformance skincare
Theme Rains, founder of Synthesis Organics, didn’t enter the skincare world through traditional beauty channels. Her journey was a deeply personal quest to explore the link between wellbeing and nature, one that would eventually lead her to create a brand that now graces the shelves and treatment menus of some of the world’s most prestigious spas, including Capella Sydney, Four Seasons, and Peninsula Hot Springs.
“My journey into skincare began as a deeper inquiry into the connection between personal wellbeing and nature,” Theme explains. Years of study in herbalism, energy medicine, and psychotherapy shaped her understanding of the healing potential of plant intelligence, not just for the skin, but for the emotional and energetic body as well.
“We formulate with a living awareness of both the visible and invisible,” Theme shares. “Every step of our process, from farm-grown botanicals to proprietary bioenergetic infusion, honours the vibrational quality of the plants, the land, and the people involved.”
This commitment to energetic and environmental integrity remains central, even as the brand grows. “We stay close to the source, literally and figuratively,” Theme says. From their solar-powered lab and eco-certified farm in Byron Bay to collaborations with regenerative farmers and Indigenous suppliers, sustainability is not a marketing slogan but a daily practice. “Growth for us isn’t about expansion at all costs, it’s about deepening our alignment and refining our impact.”
That philosophy is the foundation of Synthesis Organics, a brand known for its certified organic purity, advanced bioactives, and energetic resonance.
“I saw a gap in the market for truly holistic skincare, products that not only met the highest standards of purity and performance but also honoured the emotional dimensions of healing.”
What started as a purpose-led brand has now become a presence in iconic five-star wellness destinations. “It’s incredibly humbling,” Theme says.
“These partnerships reflect the deep intention behind our formulations and the resonance they carry, not just on the skin but throughout the entire treatment experience.”
From Capella Sydney and Taipei to Four Seasons spas, Synthesis Organics is used in rituals designed to honour both the guest and the land. “Our organic, bioenergetic skincare meets the refined standards of world-class hospitality, while preserving the integrity of nature,” she adds.
But what truly sets Synthesis Organics apart is its energetic approach.
As for what’s next? The brand is blossoming with intention. Their recently launched Rest & Restore Liposomal Magnesium Spray, featuring calendula from their now biodynamic farm, has been met with overwhelming support. Meanwhile, their NOTOX Ageless Glow Serum continues to gain traction as a natural, clinically proven alternative to injectables. A new Skin Longevity Essentials Collection supports well-ageing with targeted bioactives.
A major milestone is the co-creation of the Capella by Synthesis body range, a bespoke collection for Capella Hotels, rolling out globally this year. In July, the brand will also launch into SOL Elements at Tamborine Mountain, with a Dubai debut on the horizon at a new luxury sustainable hotel within what is being hailed as the most environmentally advanced building in the UAE.
Each step, Theme says, “reflects our ongoing commitment to creating luxurious, regenerative skincare that supports the skin, the

advanced concept.
I started with just a couple of handpieces, primarily using the RF needling. The results were impressive and the device quickly became a cornerstone in my treatment offerings. Over the years, I’ve expanded and now own all seven handpieces. Purchasing EndyMed was one of the best decisions I’ve made for my business..
How have you integrated EndyMed into your existing treatment offering, are there particular skin concerns or patient types you find it works best for?
In our clinic, nearly every client concerned with anti-ageing, skin texture, fine lines, wrinkles, enlarged pores, rosacea or acne scarring will undergo treatment using the EndyMed device.
One of our most in-demand modalities is RF FSR (Fractional Skin Resurfacing). Clients love the results, visible improvements in skin texture and tone with minimal downtime.
We also use the body contouring handpiece extensively, often combining it with our entomology-based body contouring and skin tightening treatments. When paired with Onda Coolwaves™, the results are even more remarkable making it a game-changer for body treatments.
Today, our clinic offers 25 different modalities and the seven EndyMed handpieces are among the most frequently used.
microneedling, even for anti-aging treatments. The skin tightening is more pronounced and the resurfacing results are clearly superior. Fine lines and wrinkles visibly soften, pores are significantly reduced and even acne scarring responds exceptionally well.
When planning a treatment series, I typically recommend four sessions, with at least two being RF FSR. It’s also incredibly effective for the eye area, including the eyelids, which remain a challenge with RF needling. Clients often mention that their face looks tighter and more contoured, as if they’ve even lost weight, just from the lifting and firming effects of the treatment.
From a business perspective, how has EndyMed contributed to your clinic’s ROI, client retention, or treatment satisfaction?
If you are considering investing in just one device, I highly recommend EndyMed. This versatile device offers a wide range of skin and body treatments, making it a smart and efficient investment.

The treatments themselves are surprisingly comfortable. The downtime is minimal especially when you consider the results these treatments deliver. Post-treatment care is straightforward too. We’ve never had any complaints or concerns about the downtime and the outcomes speak for themselves.
Which handpieces or treatment modalities do you use most often, and what kind of results are your clients seeing?
Without a doubt, radiofrequency fractional skin resurfacing (RF FSR) is my top choice right now. In fact, I now prefer it over RF
EndyMed provides both advanced treatments that require downtime as well as non-invasive options that are completely pain-free, no downtime and can easily be integrated into a monthly skincare routine. This flexibility makes it suitable for various client needs and treatment plans.
Additionally, the device is distributed by High Tech Medical, a highly professional company known for its outstanding support and training. Their training programs are comprehensive, clear and extremely informative. They also offer excellent ongoing support, making the integration of EndyMed into a practice, seamless.
Another important benefit is the cost effectiveness of the treatments and handpieces, which allows for both client affordability and strong practice profitability. Learn more about EndyMed with hightechmedical.com.au
Hollywood Spectra became a cornerstone in advanced skin
e sat down with Dermal Therapist Ash to discover why this device has become a clinic essential, and her go-to for achieving transformative results.
With a passion for treating pigmentation and helping clients regain their confidence, Ash shares how the Hollywood Spectra has changed the way she approaches skin health.
Tell us about yourself, your clinic, and some of the main indications you’re managing with your clientele.
My name is Ash (short for Aisling, it’s Irish!). I moved to Australia nearly 15 years ago and have worked as a dermal therapist ever since. For the past two years, I’ve been part of the team at Lúum Aesthetics, a beautiful boutique clinic in West Perth specialising in non-surgical antiageing and advanced skin treatments.
I primarily focus on treating pigmentation, everything from sun damage and age spots to melasma, PIHP, diffused redness, and rosacea. I especially love the challenge of melasma, and that’s where the Hollywood Spectra really shines. It’s predictable, safe, and delivers remarkable results.
What indications have you found the Hollywood Spectra most effective at treating?
The Hollywood Spectra has truly become the workhorse of our clinic. We use it all day, every day, across a wide range of skin concerns, and best of all, it’s safe and effective for all skin types. Personally, I use it to treat everything from melasma and sun damage to active acne and scarring. The Hollywood Carbon Peel is also incredibly popular with our clients. It’s gentle but effective, deeply exfoliates the skin, clears pores, stimulates collagen, and leaves the complexion glowing.
I also love the 532nm wavelength for targeting stubborn pigmentation in lighter skin tones, especially those orange-toned spots that don’t respond well to IPL, BBL or even 1064nm. A couple of careful passes with the 532nm usually does the trick.
How have you integrated the Hollywood Spectra as a core treatment in your repertoire?
We often treat multiple skin indications in a single session, adjusting parameters to target different layers of the skin, a huge win, especially for clients with more than one concern.
Living in WA, where the climate is consistently hot and sun exposure is high, many clients have tanned skin, which limits what treatments they can safely have. The Hollywood Spectra allows us to treat all skin types safely year-round, particularly using the 1064nm wavelength.
How has the Hollywood Spectra impacted the clinic’s ability to offer advanced skin treatments?
It’s been a game changer. We’re able to confidently treat complex skin conditions like melasma and acne scarring with consistent, high-impact results.
Education plays a big role. Every melasma client receives an in-depth consultation where we explain their condition, prescribe tailored skincare, and create a plan for long-term management. We always recommend:
• A tinted SPF for complete light protection
• A tyrosinase inhibitor to prevent and fade pigmentation
• A vitamin C serum to brighten and protect
If clients skip this part of the protocol, they’re more likely to see rebound pigmentation. But when they commit, the results are incredible, sometimes even after a single treatment.
We also use the MDF handpiece for treating acne scars and skin texture issues. When paired with treatments like TCA Cross, exosomes, or biostimulants, we see phenomenal improvements in fine lines, enlarged pores, and scarring.
What feedback have you received from patients who have undergone treatments with the Hollywood Spectra?
Client satisfaction has been amazing, honestly, 100%. Even when we’re just targeting pigmentation, patients are often blown away by the overall improvement in skin quality. Skin looks firmer, brighter, and more refined.
It’s deeply rewarding to help someone manage melasma, acne, or scarring, concerns that can really impact someone’s confidence.
Are there any specific patient success stories that highlight the effectiveness of the Hollywood Spectra?
Yes, one really stands out. I had a bride-to-be visit just two months before her wedding. She had significant melasma, both epidermal and dermal, and came in wanting a medi-peel. I suggested the Hollywood Spectra instead, explaining that she was a little late in the game but we could still make a difference.
After one treatment, the results were incredible. She returned a few weeks later glowing, we fitted in one more session before her big day, and she looked stunning. Helping her feel beautiful and confident on such an important day was such a rewarding experience.

Non-Invasive Technologies for Post-GLP-1 Skin Laxity and Volume Loss
With the widespread adoption of GLP-1 receptor agonists and other medical weight loss therapies, aesthetic clinics are encountering a new subset of patients: individuals experiencing significant, often rapid, reductions in body weight and with it, noticeable changes to facial structure and skin integrity.
While this transformation is welcomed by patients, the resulting facial deflation, laxity, and loss of dermal tone present a clinical challenge. These outcomes are difficult to address with injectables alone, particularly when patients prefer non-invasive, full-face rejuvenation.
Enter Alma X-Lift, a protocol-based solution designed specifically for facial sculpting and dermal revitalisation in the post-weight loss population.
Skin laxity after weight loss is not simply sagging, it’s a complex result of:
• Subcutaneous fat depletion
• Unmasking of skeletal structure and folds
• Rapid dermal dehydration and collagen loss
Clinically, this may present as pronounced nasolabial folds, malar flattening, pre-jowl sulcus, and submental sagging, conditions that benefit from a holistic, layered approach rather than filler-based camouflage.
The Alma X-Lift is a non-invasive, multi-step facial lifting protocol delivered via the Alma PrimeX platform. It was developed in response to growing demand for comprehensive facial rejuvenation without downtime, discomfort, or consumables.
Using two signature applicators, SpeedSculpt and TuneFace, the X-Lift protocol harnesses:
• Unipolar radiofrequency (RF) at 40.68 MHz for deep dermal heating, fibroblast activation, and collagen remodeling
• Guided non-focused ultrasound to enhance tissue permeability, promote lymphatic drainage, and stimulate deeper structural support
This synergistic approach offers volumetric lifting, improved definition (especially in the lower face and jawline), and enhanced skin firmness, without needles or surgery.
Unlike standalone RF or ultrasound devices, the Alma X-Lift isn’t
just about the technology, it’s about the protocol. The pre-defined parameters and strategic applicator sequencing ensure reproducible results that can be delegated safely within a clinical team.
Key advantages:
• Protocol-led: Consistency across providers and patient types
• Delegable: No physician-only steps required
• Consumable-free: Maximising profitability per session
• Multi-zone: Effective for cheeks, submental area, jawline, and perioral region
• Comfortable: No anaesthetic or downtime required
Several studies validate the role of RF and ultrasound in treating skin laxity:
• El-Domyati et al. (2021) demonstrated histological increases in collagen and elastin after combined RF/ultrasound therapy, with visible tightening and contouring benefits (PMID: 34250567).
• Friedman and Gilead (2007) found the use of RF to be both safe and effective in treating age-related wrinkles and laxity, with up to 75% visible improvement in some patients following a series of treatments (PMID: 17451576).
The Alma X-Lift builds upon this science with an optimised delivery method that ensures both comfort and efficacy in real-world clinical settings.
With aesthetic medicine shifting toward long-term dermal health and full-face rejuvenation, not just wrinkle reduction, devices that deliver results without injectables are gaining traction.
Alma X-Lift is particularly suited for:
• Post-weight loss patients (GLP-1 or bariatric)
• Ageing clients avoiding invasive procedures
• Preventative patients in their 30s–40s maintaining facial contour
• Clinics looking for high-performance, high-ROI treatments
It’s not just a new machine. It’s a shift in how we approach tightening, one that’s evidence-based, future-focused, and ready for today’s client demand.

Inside Power Potential’s high-tech, human-first approach to recovery, performance, and holistic health.
After more than two decades working hands-on in physiotherapy, the founder of Power Potential Efrem realised a gap in the healthcare landscape, one that couldn’t be solved by adding more practitioners or cutting prices. What was missing, he believed, was a truly integrated, future-forward space that went beyond symptom relief to deliver customised care, advanced diagnostics, and ongoing wellness support all in one place.
The result is Power Potential, a boutique healthcare destination designed around five pillars: Physiotherapy, Orthopaedics, Wellness, Exercise, and Recovery (P.O.W.E.R.). But this is no ordinary clinic. It’s a purpose-built facility where elite-level care and luxury-level experience meet, supported by a team of Physiotherapists, Exercise Physiologists, Integrative Medical Practitioners, and other allied health professionals.
“Power Potential is the realisation of a 25-year dream,” the Efrem shares. “I’d treated thousands of patients and saw firsthand what was missing: a cohesive, high-quality environment that used technology and multidisciplinary care to get real results.”
While many traditional clinics compete on convenience, Power Potential positions itself differently, by offering depth, data, and results. With services ranging from sports and post-operative physiotherapy to hydrotherapy, cardiac rehab, Pilates, and even cryotherapy, patients can move from treatment to recovery seamlessly, without needing to jump between different providers or locations.
Signature services include:
• Sports and orthopaedic physiotherapy
• Hydrotherapy, hot/cold contrast therapy, and cryotherapy
• Infrared sauna, compression therapy, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy
• ECG testing, spirometry, and cardiac rehab
• VO₂ and performance analysis
• Bioimpedance testing (SOZO)
• Reformer Pilates and strength programs
• Women’s health and lymphedema therapy
It supports every patient’s journey, from acute injury to peak performance It supports every patient’s journey, from acute injury to peak performance, through a model that’s both scientific and deeply supportive. through a model that’s both scientific and deeply supportive.
“Power Potential is the realisation of a 25-year dream... I’d treated thousands of patients and saw firsthand what was missing”
Central to Power Potential’s success is its commitment to evidence-based diagnostics. Rather than relying on assumptions or outdated protocols, every patient begins their journey with a comprehensive assessment using the latest technologies.
One standout is the SOZO Bioimpedance Analysis, which detects early signs of lymphedema, often before symptoms appear. With a 92% success rate in preventing chronic progression when used early, SOZO also provides valuable insights into body water balance and tissue composition, helping inform chronic disease management and wellness planning.
Another is real-time ultrasound, which visualises muscle activation during movement. This allows both clinicians and patients to see which muscles are engaging and when, enhancing treatments for core stability, pelvic health, and chronic pain. It also sharpens precision in needling and targeted rehabilitation.
In a world where sudden cardiac incidents in sport are becoming more visible, Power Potential has placed cardiac health at the centre of its athletic screening process. Through advanced 12-lead ECG testing, the team helps identify those at risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD), especially in masters and recreational athletes. Their partnership with Heartbeat of Football supports awareness and life-saving pre-season screenings.
On the performance side, VALD force plates and dynamometry ensure strength programs are evidencebased and recovery is measurable. Whether treating post-op patients or high-performance athletes, these tools allow clinicians to adapt treatment in real-time, eliminating guesswork and optimising results.
For patients, Power Potential offers a one-stop destination for care that is customised, connected, and clinically validated. For professionals, it represents a new gold standard in what modern healthcare can look like, where diagnostics inform every decision, and innovation is embraced without sacrificing personalisation.
“We’re not just here to treat symptoms,” the founder explains. “We’re here to empower people to take control of their health, with the best tools, the best team, and a model that truly works.”
Whether you’re recovering from surgery, managing chronic pain, or simply striving for a higher level of wellness, Power Potential offers more than care, it offers clarity, confidence, and results.
How SANDY HUNT of The French NP combines French beauty principles with cutting-edge treatments like Aerolase to deliver radiant, age-positive results.
Sandy Hunt, AGACNP-C, is a nurse practitioner and the founder of The French NP, a French-inspired medical spa in Hingham, Massachusetts. Known for her expertise in nonsurgical facial balancing and skin rejuvenation, Sandy blends advanced techniques with the French philosophy of vieillir avec grâce, ageing with grace. Her treatments include biostimulators, neurotoxins, dermal fillers, PRP, regenerative medicine, skin rejuvenation, volume restoration, BHRT, Quantum RF and more, each tailored to meet her patients’ unique needs and help them feel connected to themselves at every stage of life.
Her approach is deeply personal. After experiencing skin conditions like acne, melasma, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, Sandy understands the emotional toll of skin health struggles. This fueled her passion for aesthetics and inspired her to create treatment plans that prioritise long-term skin integrity and emotional well-being.
A cornerstone of her practice is the Aerolase Neo Elite, a TGAregistered Class IIb medical device. It uses 650-microsecond Nd:YAG laser technology to treat dermatological medical conditions such as acne, rosacea, and benign vascular and pigmented lesions. It is also indicated for skin tightening and hair removal. With minimal discomfort and no downtime, the Neo Elite offers safe, effective treatment for all skin tones, supporting Sandy’s commitment to inclusive, evidence-based care.
At The French NP, beauty is more than skin deep, it’s a reflection of inner vitality.
Sandy encourages patients to embrace aging as evolution rather than decline. Her focus is on harmonising outer radiance with inner confidence, a message she also shares as a national educator in advanced aesthetics.
“Anti-ageing” never sat right with me, she says. “Aging is inevitable, why fight it? I prefer proageing: embracing the journey while caring for yourself in a way that feels empowering.” Sandy helps patients age in a way that feels authentic, softening rather than erasing, restoring rather
than overcorrecting. Her goal is always to reflect how someone feels on the inside.
She rejects one-size-fits-all beauty standards, instead focusing on subtle, expressive enhancements that maintain individuality. “My job isn’t to change faces; it’s to refine what’s already there.”
She also believes graceful aging includes lifestyle: “Take care of your skin, health, and mindset. When patients leave feeling like the best version of themselves, not someone else entirely, that’s how I know I’ve done my job.”
The Neo Elite fits seamlessly into this philosophy. “It’s a workhorse,” Sandy explains. “Whether I’m treating acne, rosacea, pigmentation, or supporting skin rejuvenation, nearly every patient benefits.” She often combines Aerolase with other treatments like PRP, biostimulators, or medical-grade skincare to maximise results.
One of her most memorable cases involved a young woman struggling with cystic acne. After years of failed treatments, Sandy used Aerolase alongside a personalised plan. Within a few sessions, her skin transformed. “But what mattered most wasn’t just her clear skin, it was seeing her confidence return.”
Sandy’s holistic approach is shaped by family influences. Her mother and grandmother embodied graceful ageing, “They embraced change, stayed connected to their essence, and aged with elegance.” Her grandmother lived to 103 and remained a constant source of wisdom and love.
“They taught me that aging isn’t about losing beauty, it’s about evolving and enriching it.”
That same mindset fuels Sandy’s teaching through The French Academy of Advanced Aesthetics, where she trains practitioners in holistic, individualised treatment planning. “We must see the whole person, not just a line or volume deficit,” she says. “True beauty is refined, not manufactured.”
Graceful aging, for Sandy, is ultimately about vitality, connection, and authenticityboth in how we treat our skin and how we live our lives.

PULSE ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELD (PEMF)
Effective postoperative recovery is a cornerstone of patient satisfaction in cosmetic surgery, yet bruising and swelling can linger for weeks after liposuction surgery. Traditional methods offer limited relief, leaving many patients ancsious about visible discoloration and extended downtime. Recognising this gap, Dr Charlotte Ying, a cosmetic surgery practitioner with over 12 years of experience, introduced Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) therapy into her protocols to accelerate bruise resolution and get patients back to normal sooner.
What motivated Dr Ying to integrate PEMF technology?
Dr Ying explains, “Recovery after liposuction is often lengthy, and I wanted to find a way to reduce bruising and swelling more efficiently.” With a long-standing commitment to patient welfare, she saw an opportunity to apply Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) therapy to shorten recovery times by over 50 percent in many cases. Her motivation stems from a desire to offer smoother, more comfortable recoveries that allow patients to return to their daily lives sooner, with less reliance on medication and fewer postoperative complications.
Traditional methods can leave patients feeling vulnerable and delayed in resuming normal activities. By adopting PEMF, Dr Ying aims not only to accelerate healing but also to alleviate the psychological stress associated with prolonged bruising and swelling. This forward-thinking approach positions her practice at the forefront of non-invasive recovery enhancements.
How does PEMF work on cellular level?
PEMF technology operates by accelerating calcium binding to calmodulin (CaM), a crucial step in the tissue-repair pathway. “This process stimulates nitric oxide production, which then boosts blood and lymphatic flow,” Dr Ying notes. Enhanced blood flow delivers oxygen and nutrients to injured tissues, while lymphatic drainage reduces fluid buildup and swelling. Moreover, nitric oxide triggers angiogenesis, and promotes tissue remodelling and soft-tissue regeneration. PEMF also increases cyclic guanosine monophosphate levels, which facilitate the release of growth factors essential for cellular repair and collagen synthesis. By harnessing these cellular effects, Dr Ying has been able to offer patients a scientifically grounded protocol that addresses recovery at themolecular level, rather than merely masking symptoms.
PEMF is a game-changer in postoperative care, reducing bruising and swelling duration by over 50% in many cases, while helping patients reduce their reliance on pain medication.”
How do Venus Bliss™ MAX support these protocols?
Venus Bliss™ MAX serves as the workhorse device for Dr Ying’s PEMF treatments. It couples a 1064 diode laser for targeted fat reduction, multipolar radiofrequency (RF) for skin tightening, and PEMF to enhance lymphatic drainage. Integrating Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS), (MP)² RF, and PEMF within a single platform. It can treat fat, muscle, skin, and cellulite across seven key body areas, including abs, glutes, and, thighs, offering a full-body contouring solution.
Has PEMF been expanded beyond liposuction?
Absolutely. Dr Ying now applies the same PEMF protocols for bruising post-injectables and breast surgeries. “Across every procedure, patients heal faster, experience fewer complications and reduce their reliance on analgesics”.
Since implementing PEMF, Dr Ying reports a significant clinical shift in her patients’ recovery trajectories. Previously, most patients required four to five days of opioids (No non-steroidal).
Bruising and swelling have also diminished markedly: one patient who underwent abdominal and flank liposuction saw major bruise resolution by day even despite having mistakenly taken aspirin post-operatively. Another patient treated on her thighs exhibited almost no bruising after one PEMF session, even as untreated areas remained ecchymotic. These anecdotes underscore the consistent efficacy of the protocol across diverse cases.
In addition to shortening the recovery process, PEMF has shown great potential for improving overall patient comfort.
As more practitioners like Dr. Ying adopt this cutting-edge technology, it promises to redefine the recovery process in cosmetic surgery.
With the unique combination of Venus Bliss Max™’ fat reduction, muscle strengthening, and skin tightening technologies, Dr. Ying is confident that PEMF technology will continue to transform post-surgical care, not only improving recovery times but also reducing patient reliance on medications.
PEMF offers a non-invasive, highly effective solution to a common challenge faced in cosmetic surgery, and its role in the future of patient recovery is bri For more information about Venus Bliss™ MAX and PEMF technology, visit venus.ai

With the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) readily available at our fingertips, it’s no surprise that its use is leeching into all industries including healthcare.
Many current applications use ambient AI to “listen in” during a consultation, transcribing and summarising conversations. These tools can significantly reduce time spent on admin, freeing practitioners to focus more on their patients. But there’s a catch, and it’s a big one: data security.
Most of these applications send audio recordings and transcripts to remote servers for processing. While many claim to use encryption and secure cloud technology, practitioners and patients alike are justifiably cautious. Recent cyberattacks targeting health data, such as the Medibank breach in Australia or the NHS ransomware attack in the UK, have put the risks in stark perspective.
Many practitioners feel uneasy knowing that sensitive conversations, including detailed medical and psychological discussions, might live somewhere in the cloud. Beyond privacy, there’s also professional liability. What happens if a recording is misinterpreted, misused, or leaked? For many, that’s a line not worth crossing.
The creators of Treatment Pad, a popular AI tool for aesthetic photography, have developed a new solution tailored to meet the real concerns of modern practitioners: Diagnosis Pad.
This patent-pending app offers real-time, on-device medical AI without the need for cloud processing. That means no internet connection is required, and no audio ever leaves the practitioner’s device. It’s fast, private, and secure.
Here’s how it works
Diagnosis Pad uses ambient audio during a consultation to generate medical notes, transcriptions, and suggested differential diagnoses. The app dynamically updates its suggestions as more clinical information is spoken, offering a kind of intelligent “second set of ears” that can support practitioners in the room.
It also recommends relevant follow-up questions based on the context of the consultation. Want to know why a specific diagnosis was suggested? Tap to view the supporting rationale, based on a built-in context aware medical terminology database.
Originally designed for General Practitioners and debuted at the Royal Collage of General Practitioners’ Clinical Update Conference, Diagnosis Pad is now expanding to support the unique cases of Cosmetic clinicians.
For example, psychological screening is especially important in cosmetic practice, where practitioners have a duty of care to assess clients for issues such as body dysmorphic disorder (BDD).
These conversations can be delicate, and newer practitioners may feel unsure about the right questions to ask. Diagnosis Pad helps by gently guiding the conversation, offering prompts based on subtle cues in the dialogue.
Similarly, the early identification of cosmetic complications is a crucial aspect of safe cosmetic practice. Issues such as vascular occlusion, delayed swelling, or infection can sometimes present subtly and may be overlooked, especially by less experienced practitioners. Diagnosis Pad is working to support these cases by actively listening during consultations and flagging symptoms or statements that may indicate a developing complication. It can prompt further questioning and offer a list of potential diagnoses in real time, helping practitioners to act quickly, document thoroughly, and minimise risk.
In addition to its diagnostic support, by handling time-consuming documentation in the background, Diagnosis Pad allows aesthetic professionals to stay more present with their clients, and spend more time performing treatments, not paperwork. The final transcript and notes can be reviewed, edited, and copied directly into the clinic’s record system.
In an industry that’s fast-paced, highly personalised, and deeply trust-based, tools like Diagnosis Pad offer something that’s been missing: real-time intelligence, without compromise on privacy.
For cosmetic nurses and aesthetic practitioners looking to stay ahead while staying safe, this kind of AI may not just be helpful, it might soon be essential.

Doctors, lawyers, politicians, and other advocates, from all around Australia gathered in Sydney to challenge AHPRA’s unchecked power, calling out a broken system that punishes health care practitioners (HCPs) while failing to protect patients.
The Australian medical industry is at a critical crossroads. In a landmark event titled “The Misdeeds of AHPRA”, healthcare professionals, legal experts, policymakers, whistleblowers, and patient advocates came together to address growing concerns about the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
Convened by Dr Niro Sivathasan under the Australian Medical Professionals’ Society (AMPS), with support from the Australian Doctors’ Federation (ADF) and endorsement from MPs and senators across the political spectrum, the conference served as a powerful platform demanding accountability and transparency from the regulator.
The conference explored a wide range of topics exposing systemic failures within Australia’s current regulatory framework for health practitioners. Presentations ranged from personal stories of injustice
and loss to sharp critiques of AHPRA’s tactics, bureaucracy, and perceived lack of accountability. Speakers addressed how government entities have attempted to silence whistleblowers, the dangers of politicised regulation, and the blurred lines between evidencebased and marketing-driven medicine. Titles such as “Unaccountable Authority,” “Guilty Until Proven Innocent,” and “AHPRA: Asset or Liability” reflected a shared concern that the current system is not only failing to protect the public but actively harming clinicians through flawed processes, fear-based oversight, and unchecked power.
This sentiment was echoed throughout the day, as speaker after speaker described a system that has shifted away from protecting public safety and toward enforcing bureaucracy for its own sake, often at the expense of logic, clinical autonomy, and practitioners’ mental health. The overarching message was clear, AHPRA’s processes are no
longer fit for purpose, and in many cases, they’re actively damaging the very people the system is meant to support.
Among the most compelling voices was Dr Peter Callan, former President of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and a specialist plastic surgeon with over 30 years of experience. “I now work in terror of the regulator,” he admitted, highlighting the emotional burden many clinicians now carry. He described an environment fuelled by suspicion, vague language, and shifting compliance standards, one that leaves even the most experienced practitioners exposed, regardless of whether any harm has occurred.
Addressing the stigma surrounding aesthetic medicine, Callan spoke candidly. “To many, we’re seen as pariahs of the industry. It’s an easy place for the regulator to assert power, because, frankly, we’re disliked.” Despite this perception, he emphasised the essential role aesthetic practitioners play in improving quality of life. “We are the canary in the coal mine,” he warned. “For the first time, the regulator is prosecuting, suspending, and imposing conditions on practitioners without any patient harm, or even a formal complaint.”
The stories shared throughout the day were nothing short of staggering. Clinicians spoke of being investigated for using everyday language in patient communications, while others faced website suspensions over minor administrative errors. In some cases, practitioners were instructed to complete education programs that didn’t yet exist, programs they were expected to create themselves, then asked to submit reflective essays as proof of compliance.
One speaker hypothesised that, in many cases, AHPRA’s process had effectively become the punishment. Investigations extended for months, sometimes years, with minimal transparency, no clear resolution pathway, and a troubling lack of accountability. Rather than safeguarding the system, these drawn-out processes created ongoing uncertainty, emotional strain, and professional vulnerability. For many clinicians, the ordeal itself caused more damage than the original concern ever could.
and gynaecologist, who bravely spoke about her husband’s death by suicide, a tragedy she directly linked to the psychological toll of an unforgiving regulatory process that, in the end, found no fault. Despite her repeated and desperate pleas for support, AHPRA offered neither emotional assistance nor meaningful accountability. Her testimony was met with a standing ovation, a moment that captured both the room’s shared grief and a collective demand for systemic change.
Criticism at the conference wasn’t limited to emotion, it was also grounded in law. Legal experts, including lawyer Katie AshbyKohen, raised serious concerns about due process and the absence of independent oversight within AHPRA’s framework. Others questioned the escalating costs of mandatory insurance and regulatory fees, asking pointedly “What exactly are we paying for?”.
Even more confronting were the accounts of lives irreversibly altered by AHPRA’s actions. One of the most powerful moments came from the wife of the late Dr Yen-Yung Yap, a respected obstetrician
Frustration also deepened toward national representative bodies like the Australian Medical Association (AMA), which many felt had remained conspicuously silent despite growing concern from its members. Dr Chris Neil, now a Senate candidate, called for urgent reform, including decentralising AHPRA’s authority and returning regulatory control to the state level.
Throughout the day, the discussion kept circling back to a critical question “Who is AHPRA really protecting?”
The prevailing consensus? Not the healthcare professionals. Not the patients. But perhaps its own image, after years of media scrutiny and a failure to rein in rogue operators.
And yet, the event didn’t close in despair, it closed with determination. Advocates such as Dr Brian Walker MP and grassroots organiser Wayne Duffy pledged to keep pushing for reform, with meetings already underway at both state and federal levels. As one speaker declared “This is medicine. It demands integrity, transparency, and accountability. We will not be silenced.”
AHPRA declined to attend the conference and has yet to formally respond to the serious allegations raised. But one thing is undeniable, Australia’s medical professionals are no longer willing to remain quiet. The very body that was created to protect them may now be their greatest liability, and they are ready to fight back.
iDR JIMMY WANG shares why i-Thread is his preferred choice.
-Thread is rapidly establishing itself as the preferred PDO thread option across Australia and New Zealand. Recognised for its product versatility and innovative design, i-Thread extends the scope of treatment possibilities beyond traditional collagen stimulation and lifting.
Design Innovation: Expanding the Scope of Treatment
Unlike many PDO brands that simply offer mono or barbed lifting threads, i-Thread features an extensive portfolio, including innovative standout products such as:
Matrix: Created as an alternative to dermal filler, they are ideal for enhancing jawline definition and treating deeper nasolabial folds. Their unique PDO stent-like structure encourages the gradual formation of a collagen “matrix,” offering an effective solution for structural support.
Volume: By combining 10 fine mono threads into a single application, the Volume product delivers impressive results with fewer entry points. This innovative product provides soft and natural volume restoration, particularly suited for periorbital hollowing.
These products reflect i-Thread’s commitment to providing advanced solutions that give practitioners the flexibility to tailor treatments to each patient’s individual needs.
We spoke to Dr Jimmy Wang for his clinical insight on the i-Thread range:
What initially drew you to the iThread range?
I was previously an avid MINT user, but when management started to change, I decided to give i-Thread a try. The transition was smoother than expected. One of the standout features was the improved cannula glide, i-Thread inserts more easily and with less resistance, allowing me to feel that I’m in the correct plane with a high level of accuracy and precision. That increased precision also means there’s less risk of puckering or surface irregularities. For practitioners familiar with MINT, i-Thread also features a longer butt, which allows for easier repositioning during treatment. These thoughtful design elements have enhanced both my technique and my patients’ results.
What are your preferred SKUs and why?
My go-to products are the lifting barbed threads. The three I use most frequently are the 18G 162mm, 18G 185mm, and 19G 160mm. I typically combine these in both classical and reverse vectors to lift and contour the face with precision and control.
i-Thread also offers a broader portfolio, including sculpt threads for jawline definition and volume threads designed for under-eye rejuvenation and nasolabial fold volumisation.
For other practitioners considering iThread, what would you say?
If you’re already an experienced thread user, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how user-friendly and effective i-Thread is. The threads handle well, offer reliable lift, and integrate seamlessly into advanced techniques.
For those looking to introduce thread lifting into their clinic, i-Thread offers a broad portfolio with threads tailored to different anatomical areas and indications, making it an excellent entry point for learning and growth. I’d recommend reaching out to your Xytide BDM for a chat, you might be surprised by what the range has to offer.
How has i-Thread performed in-clinic in terms of patient outcomes and satisfaction?
If you’re already an experienced thread user, I think you’ll be pleasantlysurprised by how user-friendly and effective i-Thread is. i-Thread strikes a rare balance between quality, versatility, and affordability.
The pricing is very competitive, which not only allows for more threads per treatment but also helps maintain accessibility for patients, without compromising on results. t’s a reliable option for both seasoned injectors and those just starting their journey with threads.
i-Thread is distributed by Xytide.

Bruising and swelling after aesthetic treatments are more than just a minor inconvenience, they’re one of the most common concerns patients raise following cosmetic, laser, and other non-surgical procedures. With today’s clients expecting fast, flawless results and minimal downtime, clinics are under increasing pressure to deliver smooth recoveries as part of the overall treatment experience. That’s where Hirudoid comes in. Clinically proven to reduce the appearance of bruising, swelling, and even superficial thrombophlebitis, this trusted topical cream is becoming a go-to addition in aesthetic recovery protocols for patients who want to look and feel back to their best, faster.
At the core of Hirudoid’s effectiveness is its active ingredient, mucopolysaccharide polysulfate (MPS), which is recognised for its anti-inflammatory and fibrinolytic properties. These actions help improve microcirculation and reduce swelling by breaking down accumulated blood in the tissue. For patients who experience bruising after procedures such as cosmetic treatments, laser resurfacing, or skin tightening treatments, Hirudoid offers a non-invasive and well-tolerated option to accelerate the healing process.
What makes Hirudoid especially suitable for aesthetic medicine is its dual benefit: it not only helps manage the cosmetic concern of bruising but also reduces discomfort and inflammation. This combination is key to improving the overall patient experience post-treatment, which directly influences satisfaction and retention in a competitive market.
Clinically, Hirudoid has been used in Europe and other international markets for decades and remains a trusted
product among dermatologists and vascular specialists. In aesthetic settings, it is being increasingly incorporated into post-treatment recovery kits and recommended by practitioners who want to offer patients a gentle but effective at-home care solution.
For clinicians, incorporating Hirudoid into post-care protocols is a simple but impactful way to extend the quality of care beyond the treatment room. It reinforces patient trust by addressing one of the most common side effects proactively, while also empowering patients with something tangible they can use at home to aid their recovery.
From a practical standpoint, Hirudoid is easy to dispense, requires no refrigeration or special handling, and is suitable for use across various age groups and skin types. Its transparent, non-greasy formulation absorbs easily and doesn’t interfere with makeup or skincare routines, another key benefit for appearance-conscious clients.
In a time when patients are more informed than ever and increasingly value fast results with minimal disruption, offering a clinically supported recovery product like Hirudoid aligns with best practice care. It’s not just about managing bruises, it’s about showing patients that every step of their journey has been considered.
For aesthetic clinics looking to enhance their aftercare offering, Hirudoid is a trusted and accessible option to support healing, minimise visible side effects, and improve overall patient satisfaction.
