TRENDSETTERS

In a Giftguide exclusive, Tara Solberg, owner of retail stores Few and Far and wholesale brand Indigo Love, will share her experience, expertise and knowledge in a series of articles. In this issue, she discusses the top five trends she’s happy to follow this winter.

Trend - organic brutalism

4 giftguideonline.com.au

I’ll be the first to admit I’m not one to follow trends and I’ve always advocated for creating a soulful and meaningful interior that tells a story that reflects you, your personality and the places you’ve been.

As a retailer, this can often be challenging. Not only do we need to appear to be offering ‘what’s in’ and popular for the season in order to keep our store looking fresh and relevant, but we need to work out how to best incorporate it into our own brand stories, even when it doesn’t necessarily fit with our aesthetic.

This is exactly the reason why I choose not to follow trends. Of course, I research and inform myself of what’s coming, but as far as how closely I follow these trends—I’ll pick what’s relevant to my story and stay true to the vision I have created for my brand. However, I’ll also be the first to admit that if a design trend comes along that I love and that really resonates with me, I will definitely be using that to my advantage with strong representation throughout our stores.

Trend - paper and fabric lighting

An overarching trend that should always be in and is one that we are all becoming increasingly aware of when it comes to choosing products to fill our homes is the importance of taking an environmentally conscious approach to interior design and to recognise that beauty is not the only consideration.

In today’s world, design choices must align with our personal values and reflect a commitment to sustainability. Gone are the days of fast furniture (which, let’s face it, more often than not are found discarded or broken and damaged after only a few short years) and the concept of ‘buy once buy well’ is more relevant than ever as we seek to design spaces that will stand the test of time.

The idea of following trends has always felt like a paradoxical concept. After all, the art of decorating our living spaces should typically be

regarded as a long-term investment that requires careful consideration and attention to detail.

But just as the seasons change, so do the trends we see in products and interiors. As retailers, we need to be able to adapt and change and to adjust to the changing markets, while still remaining true to our brand. And coming from someone who claims ‘not to follow trends’, I certainly accept that my style has changed quite significantly over the 14 years I’ve owned my retail business.

However, I’ve come to learn that this is the result of an ongoing education and with this education

I’ve found comfort in the realisation that if we stay true to our story and our vision, this is where true success lies. If we know who we are, so do our customers—consistency in your message will always be so important when it comes to increasing sales.

Trend - earth tones Trend - natural stone

So, if a sense of permanence and longevity is key to understanding where trends are headed, what will feel timeless for years to come and what would we be happy to learn to live with (for a very long time)?

Here are my top five trends to consider this winter.

1 Earth tones—a colour scheme I couldn’t be happier about. This winter, we’ll be seeing more nature-inspired hues with the use of creamier, warmer whites and earth tones of taupe and all shades of brown. To complement this, there will be hints of mauve, peach and coral. For the colour lovers out there, this does not mean things need to get dull. Consider using browns or creams as a base and highlighting with pops of pink, peach or mauve.

2 Paper and fabric lighting—softer, more organic shapes and materials offer a more ambient glow and diffused light with handmade

finishes and beautiful imperfections, adding true personality and warmth to a space.

3 Organic brutalism—this time with less focus on a cold industrial look and more on the incorporation of natural elements like wood, stone, greenery and plants, and sustainable materials resulting in a warm and more welcoming aesthetic. We will see raw, bold chunky, geometric shapes but in warm and inviting materials.

4 Natural stone—the sculptural, imperfect and tactile aesthetics of natural stone forces us to pause, reset and replenish. Neutral tones represent sustainability and balance and their use within interiors creates a soft and calm ambience.

5 Statement glass—another natural material handcrafted with sophistication into shapes inspired by sculptural lines and organic forms. So, when it comes to following (or not following) trends, I am always of the opinion that we should be able to pick and choose what aspects we are happy to incorporate into our story and what elements we are comfortable to ignore.

Personally, I’m excited to embrace the trends for this winter, reflecting a commitment to sustainability, natural materials and warm, welcoming spaces and am looking forward to building stories through merchandising and marketing to express these. G

Currently located in the former Royal George Hotel in Kyneton, Kabinett was previously housed on Piper Street (since 2009) and was moved into the hotel during Covid, to offer a lifestyle focused and dedicated destination inspired by memories collected through years of travelling the world.

“The former tenants were about to move out of the building when the pandemic hit Australia,” says co-founder Melissa Macfarlane.

“The perfect opportunity was born to relocate and expand Kabinett into a boutique department store. The offering was extended to include a wider range of homewares, books as well as new and original furniture that I design.

“The pandemic made travelling impossible—Kabinett gave us the perfect opportunity

to take customers on a journey. With this in mind, we opened a fragrance department stocking niche fragrances inspired by the scents of exotic locations and distant memories of times gone past.”

The creative duo behind Kabinett is Macfarlane and Frank Moylan, both wellknown for their credentials from the Royal George Hotel in Kyneton, the Farmers Arms in Daylesford and The Crimean in North Melbourne.

The buying principles of the Kabinett team are driven by a sense of history, patina, design and collection. The store is immersive, inspirational, authentic and curated with integrity. Kabinett seeks out the unexpected and unusual and works with small studios from around the world. Original furniture and objects designed by Macfarlane make the offering and buying experience truly unique.

“Most visitors are surprised to find Kabinett behind the walls of an old pub. You enter an unexpected world that triggers your senses. Think soft textures of Italian velvet cushion, the warming smell of old timber furniture, the sparkling reflection on Italian glass jewellery.

“Our furniture and homewares department is a mix of old and new which we believe creates the perfect balance in a home. We aim to find products that are unique and new to Australia. We don’t go for the known brands but find small scale producers.”

Indeed, Macfarlane doesn’t follow trends when it comes to

designing or selecting products for the store.

“We covet the unique, those pieces that showcase incredible design, function, aesthetics and sensory enjoyment. We are not driven by era, trend nor mass marketing; our look is our own and we are always true to it.

“The inspiration comes from a love for the old and unusual. Kabinett has always specialised in vintage industrial furniture imported from India, that is the origin of the business. Each item is unique, worn over time and has a story to tell of a previous life.

“It’s about character over cost and a unique and personal ambience over contrived styling. We are maximalist and we are minimalist; we embrace wabisabi; we love colour and we love monochrome; we see the value in texture; we think old is just as good as new. Our homes should not be generic and so neither is our homewares offering.

“By offering items that are unique and often reused (old furniture) sustainability is an inherent part of the products we stock. We seek to create an experience and thus memories

of a trip long talked about—small or big purchases are meant to be cherished forever.”

The Kabinett ethos revolves around curation—the act or instance of pulling together, sifting through and selecting for presentation. Kabinett’s carefully curated homewares collection encourages people to think about what resonates with them and their interiors. Furniture, artistic works, objects and ephemera all form a part of this considered process.

story to tell as well as furniture pieces and interior objects designed by Macfarlane or ordered in small numbers. Fragrances from France, soaps from Portugal, mirrors and dining table settings that evoke celebration and gatherings with friends can all be found.

The charm doesn’t end at Kabinett. Upstairs in the twolevel building, visitors can find Botanik, a cocktail bar and bottle shop specialising in the finest local and imported aromatic and botanical infused alcohol such as amaro, aperitivo and vermouth.

The theme continues with

a collection of glassware and cocktail making equipment imported from the US and around the world. Expect interesting and unique products, almost all of which can’t be found at mainstream bottle shops.

“Both Frank and I have had extensive careers in hospitality and previously owned the Royal George Hotel, The Farmers Arms in Daylesford and The Crimean in North Melbourne.

Entertaining people is a passion that we couldn’t let go off,” Macfarlane enthuses.

“The cocktail bar is located on the second floor of the building and adds the perfect element of surprise when you wander up the old staircase. Who wouldn’t want to shop for their new home, peruse the shelves for unique homewares all while sipping on a delicious cocktail?”

Increased exhibitor and retailer participation drives enhanced discovery, connections  and commerce at Chicago’s Inspired Home Show.

MAY 2023 19 review

The Inspired Home Show wrapped up on 7 March 2023 in Chicago, where more than 1,600 exhibitors and nearly 30,000 home and housewares professionals from 125 countries came together to discover new products, reconnect with colleagues and advance the industry.

President and CEO of the International Housewares Association (IHA), Derek Miller, said the show was an incredible

step forward in the postpandemic recovery of face-toface events for the home and housewares industry.

“The enthusiasm and positive feedback we have seen over the last four days reminds us all how important it is to gather the industry together in-person every year,” he said.

“It was particularly rewarding to see the return of so many who were unable to participate last year.”

Indeed, after an initial return in 2022, the show demonstrated

significant year-over-year increases in both exhibitor and retailer participation.

“Strong support for the show was demonstrated by the industry through the presence of major key retailers and leading exhibiting brands. Attendees confirmed at the show included senior-level executives and buyers from major retailers.”

Let’s have a look at some of the products that were on display from 4 to 7 March at the Inspired Home Show at McCormick Place in Chicago.

In addition to its signature line VinGardeValise collection, a wine and spirits travel luggage, the company also showcased its latest product, the VinXplorer wine and beverage backpack.

“We are very excited to be a first-time exhibitor at this year’s event and look forward to introducing our portfolio of innovative products to the home goods industry,” Ron Scharman, chief executive officer and co-founder of FlyWithWine, said.

The design and functionality of the company’s VinGardeValise suitcase products allow travellers to customise a unique travel experience, with or without wine and spirits. The patented removal foam inserts provide maximum versatility to travel with multiple bottles, personal travel items or combination of both.

FlyWithWine has recently expanded its product line to address the outdoor, sporty lifestyle with its VinXplorer wine and beverage backpack. With multiple features and functions, the VinXplorer also includes two refillable bladder bags for up to 1.5 litres of wine or beverage of choice as well as a removable, separate two-bottle hard zipper case for use as a standalone carrier when needed.

With kitchen and tabletop pieces influenced by a health-driven perspective and a nature-positive ethos, founder and designer, Daniel Gabbay, has set out to create a collection that is free of toxins yet full of life.

“When we designed our cookware, I drew inspiration from Colombian sculptures that honour abundance and beauty from an artful perspective,” he explained.

“I set out to create a collection of products that are beautiful to look at, easy to use, healthy for your body and good for the earth—a brand free of toxins yet full of life that celebrates our world, its people and their cultures.”

Through the brand’s partnership with One Tree Planted, bloomhouse will plant a tree for every set sold in an effort to replenish our world, inspire acts of kindness and encourage moments of growth together, he added.

The show provided Fusion, the new flagship brand from Rimports, with the perfect venue to meet with the brand’s key retailer buyers along with an opportunity to fully showcase the new brand. Fusion and its product assortment stood out as something different and compelling.

Now with jar candles in the mix, retailers can capture their fair share of both segments while allowing customers to have a one-stop-shop to all their home fragrance needs.”

TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS

Six parallel exhibitions generated cross-industry business opportunities for both exhibitors and buyers, strengthening Hong Kong’s role as a global sourcing hub.

Hong Kong was finally back to business as the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) organised the first physical event since Covid reared its ugly head (again).

Six trade fairs under one roof attracted plenty of buyers.

Following on from the success of the digital version, HKTDC decided to again combine six fairs but now in its physical format.

Hong Kong Gifts & Premium Fair, Home InStyle, the Hong Kong International Home

Textiles and Furnishings Fair, Fashion InStyle, the Hong Kong International Printing & Packaging Fair as well as the Hong Kong International Licensing Show attracted close to 56,000 buyers from over 130 countries and regions.

“The development of the creative and knowledgebased economy has become a major driving force for global economic growth,” Sophia Chong, deputy executive director of the HKTDC, said.

“For the first time in April, the HKTDC held six major lifestyle and licensing events concurrently. The Hong Kong Houseware Fair and the Hong Kong Fashion Week were rebranded as Home InStyle and Fashion InStyle respectively, offering more diverse creative products to international buyers, while the Licensing Show was repositioned to cover multiple lifestyle categories, bringing greater synergies and opening up more collaboration possibilities across industries. We are happy to see that many exhibitors were able to secure on-site orders, which is very encouraging.”

Indeed, having the exhibitions under one roof provided buyers with a one-stop sourcing platform.

“I am happy to be back in Hong Kong visiting Fashion InStyle to source some fashion accessories,” Italian buyer Enrico Bassani said.

“I am liaising with four new suppliers from Hong Kong and mainland China for jewellery watches. I’ve also met five packaging suppliers at Hong Kong International Printing & Packaging Fair. In total, I expect to spend about 300,000 euros this time for various kinds of watches and packaging items.”

UK buyer Zahoor A Qurashi also visited the Printing and Packaging Fair. He identified 10 mainland exhibitors and expected to buy various types

of food boxes from them with an estimated value of US$250,000.

As international business travel and commercial activities return to normal, the six events featured more than 4,100 exhibitors from 23 countries and regions, covering gifts, home products, home textiles, fashion, printing and packaging solutions, licensing projects and more.

“HKTDC has always been committed to promoting the Hong Kong creative and design industry to the world through exhibitions, conferences and other activities. This year, we are bringing together six major events covering

fashion, lifestyle and licensing in April under one roof, providing a unique platform to cultivate new possibilities for licensing business through accommodating more noncharacter IPs; broadening the IP portfolio to include art, culture and digital brands that are used in licensed gifts. We believe this will create greater synergies and will open up more business opportunities across industries and disciplines,” adds Chong.

The events have attracted more than 200 buying missions from 50 countries and regions including buyers from the mainland, Japan, Korea, Association of Southeast Asian

countries, India, the Middle East, Germany, France and the United States to source in Hong Kong.

The Premium Gifts Fair, Home InStyle and Home Textiles Fair featured over 2,800 exhibitors from 21 countries and regions. As the cultural and creative industries flourish, the Cultural and Creative Corner Zone made its debut at the Premium Gifts Fair and Home InStyle to showcase designer brands and products with cultural characteristics, unique and tasteful designs.

One of the exhibitors in this zone was AEfolio, which creates handblown glass collections ranging from vases and sculptures to interior lighting.

Founder Eveline Ko’s journey with handblown glass began over a decade ago. “Twelve years ago I walked into a shop in Shanghai that sold handblown and cast glass and was immediately fascinated by the

colourful glass art with infinite possibilities,” she enthused.

“As part of my exploration I went to the US and mainland China to study glass technology, from the chemistry of controlling the colour of glass to the various techniques of blowing glass.”

While the European and US markets are now quite mature, Ko saw a gap in the Hong Kong market for handblown glass and launched AEfolio.

“All products are designed by me or our designer and made by hand in the workshop. Since each piece of handmade glass is carefully crafted by hand, it can be formed into different shapes based on the designer’s vision.

“This way of working allows glass to express human thoughts in the form of art. I draw inspiration from daily life and from art in different media to create glass art that can integrated into modern living spaces.”

Fair has been renamed Home InStyle with the expectation of bringing more design and styleoriented products to buyers. The Hong Kong Industrial Designers Association (IDSHK) joined Home InStyle for the first time. The association’s ReMIX brands and designers matching program created products in collaboration with local traditional brands such as Camel’s vacuum flasks and Red Apple’s home furniture.

Other newcomers included local brand Inwork Synergy International, which specialises in handcrafted wooden tableware, and Derangedesign Co, which won the A’Design Award for its iconic irregular stainless steel sculpture containers.

Italian company TVS Spa has exhibited at the HKTDC Houseware Fair since 2005.

“Two years ago, we launched a new collection called eco-ok induction, which is made from

recycled aluminium and comes with a recycled plastic handle,” said export area manager, Theo Tassias.

“The physical Home InStyle held after the pandemic was good timing for us to introduce this eco-friendly collection to global buyers and new distributors. We have established connections with a lot of new buyers from many countries and regions such as Ecuador, India, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Russia, Singapore, the United States and Vietnam.”

Tact Shin has been a clock

and household manufacturer for more than 40 years and introduced its latest innovation at the Home Instyle fair, the Illuminated wall clock, mainly targeted at the older generation.

“The clock is designed to add beauty and comfort to your life,” says Tact Shin’s Bess Lee.

“The glowing light of the clock can guide you in the dark, making it easy for you to see the time. Additionally, the clock is easy to install and can be placed in any corner of your home without requiring any professional installation skills.

“Made with a wooden base and adorned with LED lights, this clock is not only practical but also adds an elegant and warm touch to your home décor.”

Technology was key at Fashion InStyle’s InnoFashion and Trade Services, where Hong Kong company Stratasys was exhibiting for the first time to increase the exposure of the company’s PolyJet 3D printing technology.

“Buyers from Hong Kong, India and mainland China approached us and showed strong interest in our 3D printers that enable direct-to-textile printing on garments, footwear and luxury accessories like hats and bags,” Guy Shirazi, director of product, said.

“We are positive about the business prospects. This exhibition is a great platform to drive our expansion in Asia.”

Demand for environmentally friendly products continues to rise in global markets.

About a quarter of the Printing & Packaging Fair exhibitors provided green printing and packaging products and services.

Sustainability and safety certified products were also displayed at the Home Textiles Fair including products made of organic and recycled materials with international certifications such as GRS, BSCI and OEKO-100.

For bag brand Moral the aim is to produce the most environmentally-friendly, durable, versatile and thoughtfully designed bags that stand up no matter where the journey takes you and all this for a reasonable price, says general manager Timmy Wong.

“Moral bags are made of rPET fabric which is made from recycled plastic bottles,” he says.

“Not only are Moral bags stylish, but they also reduce our reliance on single use plastic and reduce plastic waste. Used plastic water bottles are crushed, turned into pellets then melted and spun into yarn. The yarn is then woven into fabric for us to make Moral bags.”

The brand was originally born in Fitzroy (Melbourne), Australia. A couple of mates living, working and daily commuting in and around Fitzroy and beyond, realised a need to provide the everyday traveller with the perfect bag that would ease the daily travel grind.

“The idea was that functional bags don’t need to look sporty or business like but should be full of form and function that allow you to feel comfortable

wearing to work, school or on vacation. So, after many late nights, numerous coffees and a couple of beers in a local pub, Moral was born.”

The first collection launched in 2019, however, the pandemic created some barriers and the brand had to focus mainly on the Hong Kong market.

“Currently, we have over 30 locations covering the most prime shopping locations in Hong Kong. We started our development in Singapore in 2020 and we aim to have over 20 locations in Singapore before the end of 2023 in major shopping areas such as Ngee Ann City, Paragon and Isetan Scott.

“Since things are tending back to normal in 2023, we will pick up the development and venture into some other Asian countries. The next market we will enter is Japan where we will have a presence in Isetan department store and Haneda airport in Q3 this year. Some other SEA markets such as Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia are ongoing and hopefully we can have a presence in those markets before the end of 2023.

“The European market is another major focus this year and we will start our business in the UK in Q3 2023. We are also exploring opportunities in France,” Wong adds. G
