ere we are in May with just over one third of 2017 already gone and with Winter sports now started it is a great time to reflect on market trends and conditions inside our great piece of paradise which is New Zealand. The epay team have been extremely busy working on exciting new products and more content for you – our epay retail family. Our team has been out merchandising across the country for Easter and Mother’s Day and setting up new displays and content distribution in stores nationwide. Our Marketing and Social Media team have been just as busy with $10,000 of gift card promotions given away already. In this edition, we focus on gaming, but also the basics like how to activate and redeem gift cards, which is essential when training new staff. We welcome back our SIM promotion with Vodafone once again to promote and incentivise the sales of their SIMs via your stores. The growth of gaming is amazing. Research tells us almost every household in New Zealand with children has access to video games and 58 percent of those households have at least three different gaming devices.

"In this edition, we focus on gaming, but also the basics like how to activate and redeem gift cards, which is essential when training new staff. We welcome back our SIM promotion with Vodafone once again to promote and incentivise the sales of their SIMs via your stores." This has driven sales of interactive entertainment in New Zealand to $424 million in 2016, which was a seven percent increase in growth over 2015. With 67 percent of the Kiwi population playing video games and three quarters of them being 18 years and over, this presents an opportunity to sell games and gaming related products to virtually everybody who steps foot in your store. It’s not just young men either, with just under half estimated to be female. Remember to call your epay team if you need any help on display or stocking of kgift cards or gaming content and keep working hard on your business.

Very best regards,

INDUSTRY PROFILE

GET YOUR GAME ON

The gaming industry is booming and epay retailers have access to the products to help them tap into the almost half a billion a year market. Most of epay’s gaming products can be sold by independent retailers by printing them out on demand from your terminal as well as via POSA cards.

A

s they say, the stats don’t lie, and recent findings from an independent Australian association shine a light on how strong the gaming industry is in New Zealand. The Digital New Zealand 2016 (DNZ16) is the Interactive Games & Entertainment Association’s (IGEA) industry report about the state of interactive media in New Zealand. It focuses on demographics, play habits, behaviours and attitudes. The DNZ16 also explores the notion that games are more than just fun and shows how Kiwis use games at school, at work, for health and for positive ageing as well. In short the statistics paint a very positive picture about the current health of the industry and that there are real economic benefits in retailing its related products. Sales of interactive entertainment (hardware, packaged games, subscriptions, digital sales, mobile games) reached $424 million in 2016 which was a 7 percent growth on 2015. Some of the key findings in the report

6

e p a y A U T U M N 2 017

include the startling insight that almost every household with children in New Zealand access video games and 58 percent of those households have at least three different gaming devices. In what may come as a surprise to many, 67 percent of the population play video games while 48 percent of regular users are female. The average age of players is 34 years with 76 percent aged 18 years or older. These revelations should highlight to epay retailers that any one walking into your store is a potential purchaser of gaming-related products. With the onset of mobile gaming and advanced genres of the games themselves, gone are the days of gaming customers being solely young men. Now they are from all walks of life and genders and by clever point of sale marketing and stocking the key products you can boost your sales. To maximise this potential, advertise you are a gaming retailer with POS material available from epay. Have

card stands in key places in your store and be aware of how to make on demand terminal sales of the various gaming products. Other key findings: • Digital is now greater than half of the total games market – accounting for 56 percent of sales. • Digital extras, which include season passes, map packs and game expansions, boomed with 53 percent growth. • Games publishers are increasingly adopting the in-game purchase business model which is greatly contributing to the growth of digital extras market. • Physical products in the games market remain important with consumers indicating a preference for physical copies when purchasing as a gift or as a collectable or where there might be technical limitations such as download speeds or data caps.

epay Supplier Interview

Neil Young - Head of Prepay & Value Broadband MMR Sales Spark What are the keys to being a successful Telco retailer for Spark? A focus on our customers is key to ensure success with end users, retailers and partners like epay. Having a variety of products that suits our consumers needs with exciting plans from both Spark and Skinny. We also need to be easy to deal with. We strive to make it easy to work with us and make the experience hassle free, simple and profitable.

What changes do you see as important in the successful retailing of Telco products in New Zealand? To make Spark and Skinny product ranges easily accessible we’re offering multiple access points for consumers to buy and experience our products. We are changing by being where our customers are. This may be online, in a Spark store or an epay location such as a dairy, petrol stations or supermarket. For Spark customers, free Wi-Fi, Lightbox, Spotify and Netflix offers are great reasons to be with Spark. For customers focused on budget, Skinny is a no frills Telco, offering super low prices. In fact, Skinny has won the Consumer NZ’s People Choice Award for 2016 & 2017, plus has gained the Consumer Trusted

accreditation, and is currently the only telco with this status. Skinny Mobile has also won the Canstar Blue Award for Most Satisfied Customers in the Prepaid category, three years running (20152017). On top of that, Readers Digest has given Skinny their gold award for quality service for the last two years (2016-2017). A really interesting change has been with our Skinny Mobile customer base. It’s gone from a youth orientated brand to one that attracts kids all the way through to grandmothers!

What exciting Spark innovations do you think are important for our readers to know about? The sharpest pre pay mobile offerings in both Spark and Skinny for calling, data and txt are always being worked on. The latest innovation is a brand new product for Spark called the ‘Data Lovers’ pack, which is essential as data is the key component in a competitive Telco offering. For Skinny, our updated broadband offerings are unbelievable!

How would you describe Sparks’ relationship with epay and what is the key benefit for Spark having epay as a partner?

It’s really good! epay are easy to trade with, offering clear communication and are reliable and friendly. Mostly, epay are delivering results and that’s why they’re our partner!

How long have you been at Spark and what do you love most about what you do? I have been at Skinny and now Spark for two and a half years. For me, it’s all about the people, both here at Spark and all our external partners too. Personally, I love the trading and personal engagement with whom I’m dealing with. Sometimes this is in a corner store, other times it’s around a boardroom table!

Anything else you want to tell our readers about? It’s exciting times at Spark and Skinny Mobile. We’ve got two strong brands that work well together to provide great products to two different audiences. With competitive offers and award winning service, not to mention our extensive and solid coverage nationwide, what’s not to love? Get on board!

arrived from overseas. Our focus is to make their day better as their journey could be for so many reasons. We have to show them the Kiwi culture and make them very comfortable by offering them a wide range of food and beverage. How have you benefitted from BNZ Currency Select? We benefit through the savings we receive on our merchant service charges. From the point of view of our customers, it provides them with a transaction total in their local currency and when they are away on holiday they know exactly what they are spending. This enables them to control their spending rather than getting charged through their bank at a variable exchange rate days later after the transaction date. What does the future hold? After being in the hospitality business for more than 100 years, HMSHost has access to a lot of international brands and because we are very much focussed on grabbing every opportunity we get, we look forward to any future opportunities. We understand this is a very demanding and competitive industry but we are always excited to take on new challenge.

RETAILER PROFILE

SPOT LIGHT... Jason Rutherford Subway Smales Farm

What are the keys to being a successful quick service restaurant owner? Respecting and spending time with both your customers and staff is a key. You need to serve people how you want to be treated. Respect has a flow on effect. Why are Subway gift cards a great product? They are an easy fix to a lunchtime solution. With one of our gift cards mum will know what the kids are having for lunch and it’s better than giving them cash which they could spend on something other than food. They are widely available in retail stores so parents can purchase them while they are doing the supermarket shop for example while they are also redeemable at all Subway stores. What special marketing do you undertake that generates sales? We are always looking at ways to support the community at large. For example, we sponsor the AMI netball player of the day award which entitles recipients to a free six inch sub, while we are involved with the smoke-free campaign at North Shore hospital. I also mentor year 13 students on entrepreneurship. Being a Subway franchisee with three stores, how do you put your own spin on the way your business is marketed and what makes your Subway stores unique? With great customer service and by spending a lot of time in the store to understand my customers better. By being on hand to listen to complaints or suggestions means I can implement things immediately to make the improvements required.

EFTPOS Payments A Changing Marketplace

“The next generation of terminals will predominantly be running open operating systems...it’s pretty cool technology”

Back in 1999 when the world was obsessed with Y2K, the EFTPOS industry was on the verge of developing a new breed of terminals. They were going to offer more memory, easier and faster application development; flash terminal management systems and third party applications. This vision has evolved through two decades of hardware and software revisions of the humble EFTPOS terminal. Are we finally now on the brink of change? Payment channels have developed significantly during this time. E-commerce gateways, social commerce, person to person payments, Apple Pay, Transit card payments and a host of other payment methods have been developed and deployed. The major terminal brands have also been transforming. Along with hardware development, they have been focused on creating payment ecosystems – with the development of Terminal Management Systems, Application Marketplaces and Payment Gateways. What does all this mean in the real world? We ask epay Head of Projects & Transactions, Brian Bellingham to elaborate.

“The next generation of terminals will predominantly be running open operating systems. That means access to more developers, faster development time, more memory, and web-based applications. Think of mobile phones with multiple applications that can be upgraded remotely. It’s pretty cool technology” says Brian. “Driving these smart terminals is a set of infrastructure. Much like smart phones are supported by the App Store or Google

Play, terminal owners will have access to application marketplaces to download value-add applications to their devices.” Applications may be developed by the owner of the terminal fleet, or maybe a third party who offers their applications for sale in the Marketplace. Brian says, “terminal owners will also have access to more information about the terminals they manage in their fleet. For example, how many card reads the terminal may have done, whether or not the terminal is online and has the latest software loaded.” From a consumer perspective there has also been a lot of work done by major brands to enable an omni channel experience. This is where the consumer is offered the same buying/payment experience whether they are in-store, online, mobile, MOTO, or even using interactive digital signage screens. Plenty to think about regarding etfpos technology as the transacting landscape around us changes rapidly.
