The gaming industry is booming and epay retailers have access to the products to help them tap into the almost $3 billion a year market. Most of epay’s gaming products can be sold by independent retailers by printing them out on demand from your terminal as well as via POSA cards.

A

s they say, the stats don’t lie, and recent findings from an independent Australian association shine a light on how strong the gaming industry is here.

The Digital Australia 2016 (DA16) is the Interactive Games & Entertainment Association’s (IGEA) industry report about the state of interactive media in Australia.

It focuses on demographics, play habits, behaviours and attitudes. The DA16 also explores the notion that games are more than just fun and shows how Australians use games at school, at work, for health and for positive ageing as well.

In short the statistics paint a very positive picture about the current health of the industry and that there are real economic benefits in retailing its related products. Sales of interactive entertainment (hardware, packaged games, subscriptions, digital sales, mobile games) reached $2.83 billion in 2016 which was a 15 percent growth on 2015.

Some of the key findings in the report

include the startling insight that almost every household with children in Australia access video games and 65 percent of those households have at least three different gaming devices.

In what may come as a surprise to many, 68 percent of the Australian population play video games while 47 percent of regular users are female. The average ages of players is 33, with 78 percentaged 18 or older, while 39 percent are 65 and over.

These revelations should highlight to epay retailers that anyone walking into your store is a potential purchaser of gaming-related products. With the onset of mobile gaming and advanced genres of the games themselves, gone are the days of gaming customers being solely young men. Now they are from all walks of life and genders and by clever point of sale marketing and stocking the key products you can boost your sales.

To maximise this potential, advertise you are a gaming retailer with POS

material available from epay. Have card stands in key places in your store and be aware of how to make on demand terminal sales of the various gaming products.

Other key findings: • Digital is now greater than half of the total games market – accounting for 56 percent of sales.

• Digital extras, which include season passes, map packs and game expansions, boomed with 53 percent growth.

• Games publishers are increasingly adopting the in-game purchase business model which is greatly contributing to the growth of digital extras market.

• Physical products in the games market remain important with consumers indicating a preference for physical copies when purchasing as a gift or as a collectable or where there might be technical limitations such as download speeds or data caps.

The Mercure Sydney International Airport Hotel played host late last year to the EzyMart annual conference and trade show where the company celebrated a year which it said exceeded all expectations. Alongside EzyMart group members, epay were one of 40 suppliers at the trade show who demonstrated their latest products due for release in convenience stores and service stations around Australia through 2017. The evening saw EzyMart hold its 2016 Awards Dinner with Australasian Association of Convenience Stores executive director Jeff Rogut as the keynote speaker. Rogut reiterated the mantra that the industry could have “confidence in convenience”. “There’s absolutely no doubt, seeing what people such as Ezymart are doing, seeing what other companies are doing in Australia, and seeing what’s happening with convenience globally, you should all be very confident in the businesses that you either own, or the businesses you supply,” he said. “If we look at last year we’ve had really good growth in sales. In the year to July, this channel 10

grew 4.5 percent, in terms of merchandise only. We’re really pleased in terms of the performance of the industry.” EzyMart founder and CEO Maher Magableh welcomed everyone to the conference, stating that the company’s performance had far exceeded his expectations. “We have achieved so much this year,” he said. “Our success is simple – we don’t have employees, we have partners. But we only partner with people who are ready to get their hands dirty. Your success is our success.”

How long have you been stocking epay products and why did you start?

Since we opened in May 2016 we have been using the epay products due to their easy to use nature and the ability to have a huge amount of stock on hand without a large overhead.

Which epay products do you stock?

We have a range of epay products in stock including iTunes cards, Trend Micro, Microsoft Office, Adobe Suites, Xbox and PlayStation.

How have these benefitted your store?

Since the stock is only paid for after being sold to the customer we have been able to make sure we always have ample stock. We can also try out new items with very little risk. This has allowed the store to increase the amount of people we can reach with our products.

How do epay merchandised stands benefit sales?

The stands have been fantastic! With the variety of sizes they offer we have been able to put them throughout the store allowing staff to quickly add-on items to the sale without the need to leave the customer.

How else do you market the fact you stock epay products?

FRAUD ALERT Being wary of possible fraud is the best defence against your business becoming a victim. Potential signs of suspect activity pertinent to your business can include a customer’s EFTPOS card not being present, they manually enter their card number or no card is swiped through the terminal. To combat fraudulent behaviour always ensure you and all your staff follow these steps:

• Never provide your five digit sales code to anyone or let them operate your terminal alone • e pay will never conduct a live transaction in your store or ask you to do so in person or over the phone • Ensure the customer has paid in full before processing the payment • Do not give vouchers to the customer until you are satisfied the full valid payment has been received • Never give out voucher numbers over the phone, even if the caller claims to be from epay 30

• Shift Totals – if your store runs across multiple shifts, you can produce reports for each shift by selecting this option. Ensure your shift is closed by selecting ‘End Shift’.

• Does your store regularly sell more than $1500 in gross sales per week?

• Does your site have internet connectivity?

• Is the internet router located at the front counter near your epay terminal?

• Is there an available port on the back of the router?

• Does your firewall allow outbound connectivity?

• Day Totals – if you need a running report of sales since the last report was closed, this function will deliver this. It can also be printed throughout the day without closing it off.

• Operator Totals – keep track of your individual operator totals and also incorporate KPIs and staff incentives with this function. It’s strongly recommended only a manager or senior staff request these reports.
