PSV Rating in API-526
PSV Definition
Pressure Safety Valve (PSV) is a device that can purge a system from an overpressure condition.
More particularly, PSV is a self actuated valve which primary purpose is the protection of life and equipment.
A PSV will discharge a required amount of fluid at predetermined pressure, to prevent overpressure in pressure vessel or system in case overpressure, and prevent accident or explosion.
How to read PSV in P&ID
P&ID is a standard process drawing shows Piping and Instrumentation Diagram in a facility.
Sample of PSV symbol is marked with red circle in the following snapshot of P&ID.
From the picture, there are 2 PSV installed to protect pressure vessel SMN-MBD-101 which is a production separator.
Tag number of those PSV are PSV-101A and PSV-101B.
Next to PSV-101A and PSV-101B
there is information : Block Discharge, Set @ 900 psig, 3J4.
Block Discharge means this is the selected case which contribute highest load/flow required to be handled by PSV during emergency.
Other possible case is fire case, and thermal expansion.
1 1 2 3
PSV DEFINITION AND READING IN P&ID
Set @ 900 psig means set pressure of the PSV is 900 psig.
3J4 means inlet connection size is 3”, PSV orifice size is J, and outlet connection size is 4”.
Other important information is inlet and outlet connection rating of PSV, which in this case is showed by symbol 6B/1B .
6B and 1B is pipe specification code.

Pipe Specification Document
Each project will have Pipe Specification document which provide information about piping size, material, class/rating used in the project.
Other important document which we need to review is Valve Specification document. This document will provide information related with valve size, type, material of construction of the valve used in the project.
Those documents are maintained by piping discipline. Depend on project, sometimes those documents are combined in one document only.
PSV inlet and outlet rating
In previous sample of PSV, inlet rating is 6B and outlet rating is 1B.
Let’s check on pipe material specification document.
6B is pipe with following spec : service : general hydrocarbon
pipe material : carbon steel class : 600# RF
hile 1B is pipe with following spec service : general hydrocarbon
pipe material : carbon steel class : 150# RF
Hence PSV inlet/outlet rating is 600#/150#.

PSV body and internal (trim) material.
Now we review the valve specification part.
Often PSV valve type is not mention specifically in the valve section of pipe/valve specification document released by piping.
But we can refer to other valve type e.g. ball valve to get valve material requirement.
Inlet PSV size is 3”.
In pipe spec 6B at ball valve section, size 3” will point to valve specification V2631.
Hence we need to open valve specification document and refer to number V2631.
7
8
In Valve specification V2631, we can gather following information :
valve body material : ASTM A216 grade WCB/WCC or ASTM A-10 ball/stem/trim material : carbon steel with electroless nickel plating or solid 316SS
9
Above information can be used as a reference to select PSV body and internal wet part (trim) material i.e. ASTM A216 WCB as body material and 316SS as trim material (nozzle, disc, and other wet part material).

PSV ody material : Car on Steel A216
WCB
PSV set pressure : 00 psi
Max PSV relief pressure : set pressure + overpressure (example 10%) = 00 psig + 0 psig = 0 psi
PSV relief temperature (data to e o tained from process, for example relief temperature is 150 degF.
Step to o tain inlet outlet flange class : Refer to AP -526, find ta le for spring loaded PSV orifice size : Focus on ta le with Car on Steel ody materia
For size 3J4 there are 4 options for inlet & outlet rating : 300/150, 600/150, 00/150, and 1500/300. We need to choose which from this option is suita le and optimize for our PSV relief condition.
PSV relief temperature is 150 degF, find the suita le section to handle this temperature in the ta le, which is section 450 deg
n 450 degF section, search for suita le rating to handle PSV relief pressure. PSV relief pressure is 0 psig. n this case suita le rating is 600/150.
Since temperature 150 degF not exatcly shown in the ta le, to find the pressure limit we can interpolate it from Annex B of AP -526.

PSV PRESSURE TERM DEFINITION
Set Pressure
The inlet gauge pressure at which the pressure relief valve is set to open under service condition.
Accummulation
The pressure increase over the MAWP of the vessel during discharge through the pressure relief device, expressed in pressure unit or %. Maximum allowable accummulation are established by applicable code.
21% for fire case, and 10% for non-fire case.
Design
The most severe condition temperature and pressure expected during operation. Design pressure is equal or less than MAWP.
Maximum operating pressure
Maximum pressure expected during system operation.
Pressure 1 2 3 7 6 5 4 3 2 1
MAWP (Maximum Allowable Working Pressure)
Maximum gauge pressure permissible at the top of a completed vessel in its operating position for a designated temperature.
Ov
% of pressure increase over the set pressure of relieving device. If PSV set pressure is set at MAWP, then % overpressure = % accummulation.
Back Pressure
The pressure that exist at the outlet of PSV as a result of a pressure in the discharge system. It is a sum of superimposed and built up back pressure.
Superimposed Back Pressure
The static pressure that exist at the outlet of PSV at the time the device is required to operate. It is a result of a pressure in the discharge system coming from other sources and maybe constant or variable.
Cold differential set pressure
The pressure at which the PSV is adjusted to open on the test stand. It includes correction for the service condition of back pressure, temperature, or both.
Blowdown
The difference between the set pressure and the closing pressure of PSV, expressed as a percentage of the set pressure or in pressure unit.
The increase in pressure in discharge header that develop as a result of flow after the relief device open.
The value of decreasing inlet static pressure at which the valve disc re-establishes contact with the seat or at which lift becomes zero.
