PCV DEFINITION AND P&ID SYMBOL
Pressure Regulator Valve (PCV) is a self-actuated control valve which used energy from process line to control the pressure at downstream or upstream the PCV.
If it is used to control the pressure at downstream of the valve, then the sensing line will be at downstream of valve, and this PCV type is called Pressure Reducing Regulator Valve.
If it is used to control the pressure at upstream of the valve, then the sensing line will be at upstream of valve, and this PCV type will be called Backpressure Regulator Valve.
P&ID is a standard process drawing shows Piping and Instrumentation
Diagram in a facility.

This P&ID shows an arrangement of instrument and service air line from an Instrument Air Receiver Vessel D-4830 to each main line distribution. There are 2 branch line distribution : first one is for instrument ai second one is for service air.

PCV-6620 which have following specification : Sensing line at downstream, hence PCV t pe is Pressure Reducing Regulator Valv pressure control set point at barg for PCV-6620 A and 6.5 barg for PCV-6620

Pipe Specification Document
Each project will have Pipe Specification document which provide information about piping size, material, class/rating used in the project.
Other important document which we need to review is Valve Specification document. This document will provide information related with valve size, type, material of construction of the valve used in the project.
Those documents are maintained by piping discipline. Depend on project, sometimes those documents combined in one document only.

In previous discussion of P&ID, we have P V with line number :
2”-IA-1433-0-B10
2”-SA-1461-0-B10
From above line number, line class is identified with latest two digit number which is B10. Refer to project P&ID legend for detail how to read line number.

To get the information related with B10 pipe specification we need to refer to pipe material specification document and search for B10 class, as shows in the next picture. 1 2

Line rating, connection type,
and material.
Now we review the pipe material specification doc ment for B10. B10 is pipe material specification with 150 lbs rating, and carbon steel pipe material. For line n mber 2 -IA-1433-0-B10 , 2 indicate the pipe size.
From the table we can get the information related with piping is as follow

pipe flange connection type is 150 lbs rating, threaded RF type pipe material is API 5L Gr B seamless galvanised to A153 Class B
PCV rating, connection type,
body and trim material.
From previo s page in P&ID we get the body size of PCV is 1 inch.
Since the PCV valve type is globe, we refer to the globe valve section with 1 size and we will get the following information
valve rating is 800 lbs, threaded type. And we select end connection type is flange RF to match with flange of the pipe as described above.
Valve body material is carbon steel A10
Valve trim material is stellite coated. We will select 316SS as trim material d e to normally project specification specified 316SS is minim m material for control valve trim.

Diaphragm (to sense pressure from sensing line)
Valve Stem (connected diaphragm with valve plug)
P2 is downstream pressure to be maintained at certain set point.
Set point is established by selecting suitable valve spring. P1
Valve Plug
(When no pressure, spring/stem will push down the plug and make it fully open)
Screwed Type ( to adjust spring set point)
Control Spring (for Set Point) Push the Stem Down
Tube (Internal Sensing Line) located at downstream.
Pressure will push diaphragm up. Valve port (area which fluid flow through the valve)
