How to read Control Valve in P&ID

P&ID is a standard process drawing shows Piping and Instrumentation Diagram in a facility.

In this sample of P&ID, it shows a Production Separator SMN-MBD-101 with its piping and instrumentation. There are 2 control valves in this Production Separator : LCV-101 for liquid control and PCV-101A for pressure control.

In a control loop, there are 3 components involved : sensor for measurement, a controller, and an actuator/final control element. In this case, there are two control loop for Production Separator, one is for liquid control and second is for pressure control.

For case in this P&ID, Element for the Liquid Control is : LT-101B (as a sensor for level measurement and transmit the measurement to LIC-101B).

LIC-101B (as a controller which compare level measurement from LT-101B with the set point, and give control output).

LCV-101 (as a final control element which received control signal from LIC-101B to manipulate the flow).

Pipe Specification Document

Each project will have Pipe Specification document which provide information about piping size, material, class/rating used in the project.

Other important document which we need to review is Valve Specification document. This document will provide information related with valve size, type, material of construction of the valve used in the project.

Those documents are maintained by piping discipline. Depend on project, sometimes those documents combined in one document only.

From previous page we have following information :

LCV-101 has 1” size and 6B pipe specificatio

PCV-101A has 2” size and 6B pipe specification

From pipe material specification document we search for code 6B as snapshot in this page.

6B is pipe with following specification ating is 600#

Pipe Material is Carbon Steel

PIPE AND VALVE SPEC 1 2 2 3 3 8 6 4

Control Valve

Then we look or Valve section particularly in Globe section, since our control valve type is globe.

LCV 101 size is 1”, the globe valve

specification code is V401

PCV 101A size is 2”, the globe valve

specification code is V4611

From Valve specification V4019 ( or LCV 101 we can get ollowing in ormation :

Valve rating and end connection is API

Class 1500 with Socket Weld RF Flange typ

Valve body & bonnet material is ASTM A105 orged steel

Valve trim material (plug and cage is AISI 410 or 420 Stainless Steel

Valve seat material is AISI 410 SS with stellite grade 6

Bolting is ASTM A193 B7 bolt and ASTM A194 2H nut

Please note that valve flange rating above is API Class 1500. It is using API not ASME. While the pipe itsel using ASME 600#. The difference between API and ASME flange rating standard is: at the same level, normally API flange has higher rated operating pressure than ASME flange.

And please note also that the connection type is SW RF (Socket Weld Raised Face . While or size 2” and above the type is WN RF (Welding

Control Valve

In addition to previous description, pipe schedule value is an important data also that we can retrieved from pipe specification document. This data is required during control valve calculation.

On piping specification document, at piping section, locate the pipe size where control valve is installed, then look for the pipe schedule information.

For example, PCV-101A is installed in pipe with size 4”.

Look for 4” pipe size from the table, then we can get information that the pipe schedule is SCH 80.

From there. we can convert this pipe schedule to pipe wall thickness, which the data is required during control valve calculation process.

CONTROL VALVE DEFINITION AND MAIN COMPONENTS

Control Valve Definition

Control valve is the most common final control element in the process control in ustries to manipulate a flowing flui (gas, steam, water, etc) to compensate the loa isturbance an keep the regulate process variable as close as possible to esire set point.
