For me, it’s not just...
‘I’m the doctor and you’re the patient.’ We’re partners.”
- Raed Al-Rajabi, MD Physician Medicine Clinical Oncology
I don’t know any other way to treat my cancer patients than to become their partner. To be available to them whenever they need me. And that’s not just when they’re sitting across from me at an appointment. Cancer is a unique journey. And for me and all of my team, the only way to undertake it is together.

BEYOND EARTH:
THE QUEST FOR LIFE
KOBIE BOYKINS | NASA ENGINEER
Tuesday, April 8, 2025
7:30 P.M. | Muriel Kauffman Theatre
KAUFFMAN CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS
Kauffman Center Presents is made possible by the John N. and Marilyn P. McConnell Foundation
Made possible by the Teresa and Tom Walsh Family Foundation
Kobie Boykins became an engineer because he wanted to be “that guy who figures out how to design and build things to function at their highest level.” Well, he’s succeeded. Boykins is a principal mechanical engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California, where he has worked since graduating from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. In more than twentyfive years at the lab, he has worked on every Mars mission since the Pathfinder mission, which took the first Rover, “Sojourner,” to Mars in 1996. Later, Kobie designed the solar arrays that powered the Mars Exploration Rovers, “Spirit” and “Opportunity.” Those Rovers landed in 2004 and were expected to perform for 90 days, but they lived for six years and fourteen years, respectively, sending images and data back to Earth and discovering that the surface of Mars once held water.
Next, Boykins led the mobility and remote sensing teams for Mars Science Laboratory rover, “Curiosity,” designing the actuators that powered the 7-ft. tall rover with a 7-ft arm that operates 10 different tools and 17 cameras. "Curiosity" launched from Cape Canaveral in November 2011 and landed on Mars in August 2012. As of May 2021, it continues to send back images and data.
In 2013, Boykins received a NASA Exceptional Service Medal, one of the highest honors given to NASA employees and contractors. Shortly after, he began his most ambitious project to date, serving as Chief Engineer on NASA’s Europa Clipper mission, which sent a radiation-tolerant spacecraft into a long, looping orbit around Jupiter to perform repeated close flybys of the icy moon. The key question they seek to solve is whether the surface ice holds liquid water beneath it. Where there’s water, there’s the capacity for life.
PARK UNIVERSITY INTERNATIONAL CENTER FOR MUSIC
When Stanislav loudenitch first started the Park International Center for Music, he began with a simple concept. Find exceptional music teachers, and give them the time, tools, focus, and dedication needed to transform exceptional students into masters themselves. An internationally-recognized Van Cliburn gold medalist, Ioudenitch assembled a team that shared his world-class skills and his passion for teaching. Other outstanding programs have great master instructors. But no other American conservatory lets those masters devote the time to their students like they do at Park ICM.
Come experience the birth of our international stars. Visit ICM.PARK.EDU for our concert schedule today.

Fewer Treatments. Better Outcomes.
The Kauffman Center would like to congratulate and thank the Diamond Level volunteers who have contributed more than 2,500 volunteer service hours.
When I started volunteering at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, I had no idea how much I would love the whole experience! From the first usher training classes to reaching Diamond level, it has been a wonderful and rewarding time.
Getting to watch the performances was a big factor in volunteering. But I didn’t realize that it is not just the Symphony, Ballet and Opera. There is such a wide variety from touring Broadway shows, rock, pop and country bands, to solo artists, and the list goes on and on. And such a wide range of performances brings a wide range of patrons which you get to interact with.
But what surprised me the most is the other volunteers! Where else could you meet such a fantastic group of volunteers from every background, profession and life experience? They all have the ‘volunteer spirit’ in their hearts and it shows! I have made so many good friends and look forward to making so many more!
~Mike
Rhodes, Kauffman Center Diamond Level volunteer

EMERGENCY EVACUATION PROCEDURES
The Kauffman Center is equipped with advanced life-safety early alert systems. Each performance hall is designed with emergency exits in case of an evacuation. In the event of severe weather, shelter in place inside the hall, not in a lobby area, and await further instructions.
In the event of an emergency, the performance will be interrupted. Horns and strobes will sound. Emergency instructions will be delivered from the stage.
Please remain seated as staff use an appropriate amount of investigational time to verify the source of the alarm.* Should an evacuation be necessary, lighted red (Muriel Kauffman Theatre) and green (Helzberg Hall) exit signs will lead patrons to one of eight emergency exit paths.
Patrons who are not able to safely and comfortably navigate stairs should remain in the venue near one of the marked “Emergency Evacuation Assistance” areas. First responders will evacuate those requiring assistance immediately upon their arrival.
Elevators, primary entrances and the Brandmeyer Great Hall staircase are NOT used in the case of an emergency evacuation.
For more information on emergency evacuation procedures, visit kauffmancenter.org/policies.
*Kauffman Center’s emergency egress plan, which includes an appropriate amount of investigational time to verify the source of an alarm, was developed with the assistance of the Kansas City, MO Fire Marshall’s Office.

DEFYING LIMITS: CLIMBING THE 14 HIGHEST PEAKS
GERLINDE KALTENBRUNNER | CLIMBER
Tuesday, May 20, 2025
7:30 P.M. | Muriel Kauffman Theatre
KAUFFMAN CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS
Kauffman Center Presents is made possible by the John N. and Marilyn P. McConnell Foundation
Made possible by the Teresa and Tom Walsh Family Foundation
Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner’s interest in mountain climbing developed at a very young age. It was Reverend Dr. Erich Tischler, a youth group leader in her hometown of Spital am Pyhrn, Upper Austria, who introduced her to the fascinating world of mountains. After the dominical church service, he would take Kaltenbrunner along on numerous tours to the mountains surrounding her hometown.
At the age of 13, Kaltenbrunner ventured on her first easy climbing tours at the local, “Sturzhahn,” which sparked off her enthusiasm for climbing and paved the road to alpinism. During the following years, she never skipped an opportunity to go climbing. Ski, ice and climbing tours became her main fields of interest, which she enjoyed besides completing her nurse training in Upper Austria and Vienna.
Her greatest dream – climbing an eight thousand peak – came true at the age of 23, when she succeeded in climbing the fore summit of Broad Peak in Pakistan, with a height of 8,027m. During the following years, she put all money earned as a nurse into different trekking and climbing expeditions to the Himalaya. After climbing the Nanga Parbat – her fifth eight thousand peak – in 2003, she decided to finally become a professional mountain climber.
Today, Kaltenbrunner has climbed all fourteen main peaks in the eight thousand series as well as two fore summits higher than eight thousand meters. By reaching the summit of K2 (8,611m), the second highest peak in the world, she has become the first woman to scale all 8,000m peaks without the use of supplementary oxygen. Her passion, however, is not solely the high mountains of the Himalaya Massive. It’s just as much the people, as well as their foreign culture and religion that touch and enchant her.

KAUFFMAN CENTER LEGACY SOCIETY
Legacy Society members have made planned gifts to the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, helping the organization plan for the future.
Barbara and Doug Cusick became Kauffman Center supporters long before ground was broken for the building.
“We were inspired by the many ways the Kauffman family has shown its support for Kansas City,” said Doug, “and we wanted to do what we could for the new performing arts venue.” Barbara and Doug opened their home and their unique collection of antique automatic musical instruments for fund-raising events. They also made a generous capital gift, purchased a seat plaque in honor of his mother and contributed to the Jane Chu Arts Endowment.
Now Doug and Barbara have looked ahead by making the Kauffman Center the future recipient of a life insurance policy their family no longer needs. “It’s as easy as changing the beneficiary’s name on a whole life insurance policy,” Doug explained. “We see this as a legacy from our entire family, that makes the performing arts and a vibrant downtown available to our kids, grandkids and beyond.”
