In a recent address at the Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST)Dinner,Eng AnnetteIngaiza,Chair
Future Leaders Committee, emphasized the critical need for university students to adopt sustainability through the lens of circular innovation
At the event, IEK was represented by Eng. Christine Ingutia, Council Member and Chair of the Western Branch; and Eng Yvonne Roberts, FutureLeadersCommitteeMember.
The discussion centered around the pressing environmental issues of our time, notably climate change and resource depletion, which have been exacerbated by the conventional linear model of production and consumption oftensummarizedas"take, make, dispose."
This outdated approach has led society to an unsustainable juncture, necessitating a shift towardsmoresustainablepractices
The Eng. Ingaiza underscored the role of the upcoming generation, particularly innovators and engineers, in redefining this narrative Highlighting practical instances of circular innovation, particularly within the construction industry and transportation sectors, the speech illustrated how companies are beginning to embrace the use of recycled materials.Thesereal-worldexamplesserveas a testament to the feasibility and necessity of incorporating sustainability into various sectors.

The acknowledgement of such challenges provides a platform for students to engage deeply with sustainability concepts, motivating them to innovate and devise solutions that harmonize environmental responsibility with economic feasibility.
Ultimately, the call to action for students was clear: they are urged to take the lead in reimagining current production and consumption standards.
