The IEK Sounds Alarm Over Development Approval Frustrations in Nairobi

Saturday, 26 April 2025 th

The IEK has raised a strong voice of concern regarding the growing frustrationsengineersarefacingwhen

seeking development approvals in Nairobi City County.

In a statement issued on 26th April 2025, IEK highlighted serious challenges including corruption, inefficiency, and a flawed digital approval system that continues to hinder the development process. Engineers report that despite the establishment of the Nairobi Planning and Development Management System (NPDMS), approvals are delayed for months with some cases taking up to a year unless physical follow-ups and informal paymentsaremade.

"The integrity of Kenya’s built environment depends on a transparent and accountable system,"Eng.Kitemeemphasized.

Prioritizing Occupational Safety: A Wake-Up Call for Kenya’s Construction Industry

In a thought-provoking article published in the Daily Nation Eng. James Karori highlightsagrowingcrisiswithinKenya’s

Thursday, 24 April 2025 th construction sector: the silent but deadly neglectofoccupationalsafety.

The construction industry remains one of Kenya’s fastest-growing sectors, yet it is also one of the most dangerous. As Eng. Karori points out, poor enforcement of safety regulations, lack of worker training, and a culture that prioritizes speed over safety continue to expose workers to unacceptable risks. Many construction sites, especially in the informal sector, operate with little regard for basic safety standards, leaving workers vulnerabletoinjuriesandfatalities.

This situation demands urgent attention from engineers, contractors, developers, and policymakersalike.

At the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK), we echo Eng. Karori’s call to action. We firmly believethateconomictransformationmustbe anchored on safe and dignified work environments. Engineersmustleadfromthefrontembedding Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) considerations in design, supervision, and execution Every structure we build should reflect not just technical excellence, but a deeprespectforhumanlife.

We also urge regulatory agencies to strengthen enforcement of safety laws and ensure that safety education becomes a centralpartoftheconstructionecosystem.
