At the recent University of Eldoret Engineering Students’ Dinner, the InstitutionofEngineersofKenya(IEK)
took centre stage in advocating for gender equity in the profession Eng Annette Ingaiza, Chair of the IEK Future Leaders Committee, delivered a powerful keynote address titled “Bridging the Gap: Women in Engineering and Their Transition to Industry and Leadership Roles”
ASectorStillStrugglingwithGenderBalance
DespitecommendableprogressinSTEM,women remain significantly underrepresented in the engineering profession, making up just 30% of the global workforce In Kenya, the figures are equally sobering. Eng. Ingaiza underscored that attracting women into engineering is only the first step; the real challenge lies in supporting themtostay, thrive, andlead.

Eng. Ingaiza highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by female engineers after graduation. She pointed out that unconscious biasandimpostersyndromeoftencauseeven highlyqualifiedwomentodoubttheirabilities Thelackoffemalerolemodelsandmentorsin senior positions makes it harder for young engineerstofindguidance.
Additionally, work-life balance remains a major concern The demanding nature of engineering jobs, coupled with societal expectations around caregiving, creates addedpressureforwomen.
These factors, compounded by workplace isolation and pressure to constantly prove themselves, also impact mental health, leading to burnout among many women in thefield
