Keeping Up With

Message from Terri Mauldin ... As we embark on another new year, we want to take time to reflect on all of the wonderful things that have happened in 2014! We are also ramping up to begin another year full of NEW and exciting programs and opportunities for our families and the community! We have been so privileged to have enjoyed a year full of meaningful connections and lots of family fun! We have reached over 130 new families that either just had a baby with Down syndrome or that had never heard about us before! We came together for so many special tributes to our amazing individuals with Down syndrome and their families during several of our signature events that included our annual Spring Picnic, DSA Day at Splashtown and River Royalty in the Texas Cavalier River Parade. In March, our teens and adults enjoyed a glamorous Spring Formal where they came to re-live their prom days! Our 1st annual HUGS Gala celebrating World Down Syndrome Day was a remarkable success. Parents, caregivers, teachers, advocates and medical professionals enjoyed the opportunities to attend to our MiniConferences and received a plethora of information given by professionals with expertise in their fields. Our Spanish Parent Support Group continues to flourish while continuing to create a strong network that is reaching more of our Hispanic population. Our teen and adult young men enjoyed participation in the University of the Incarnate Word’s football team practices, and free access to the games was granted to all our families! In September, we hosted our annual Buddy Walk where over 6,000 people attended to help celebrate those we love with Down syndrome. The organization was blessed to have raised a record amount of donations

which exceeded $200,000! These successes and so many more were found sprinkled throughout our fantastic year! In the festive month Terri Mauldin of December, we focused on giving back to our friends and loved ones with Down syndrome and their families. On December 22nd at the Valero Energy Headquarters, we hosted our annual Holiday Party where everyone enjoyed dinner, music, dancing, visits with Santa, and raffle prizes. This was a spectacular event that allowed for lots of family fun and networking. We hope you will stay tuned for all our NEW exciting programs and events, including a reading club for teens and adults “New Chapter Book Club” and a fitness club for ages 10+ “Club UP”! We appreciate the support we have received in so many different capacities from each and every one of you!

Birdies for Charity – Calendar Contest Birdies for Charity® is a fundraising program designed to give participating charities and schools the opportunity to generate contributions through the Valero Texas Open. Birdies for Charity is a no-cost program that gives 100% of the funds raised back to the participating organization. Funds are generated by soliciting pledges from individuals and corporations. There are opportunities for YOU and the DSASTX to win prizes and incentives! Any person with Down syndrome in San Antonio and the surrounding areas is eligible to win a spot in the 2016 DSASTX calendar regardless of previous appearances. The individual with the most online donations to the Down Syndrome Association through Birdies for Charity from now through midnight April 9th will be featured in the 2016 DSASTX calendar. This is the perfect contest for families whose loved one with Down syndrome has already been in the calendar, but want to show the world how much they have grown! Donate to the Down Syndrome Association of South Texas through the Birdies for Charity webpage. Make sure to select Down Syndrome Association of South Texas as your charity of choice. You will also need to enter the name of the person with Down syndrome in the “referred by” box on the form. http://www.valerotexasopen.com/birdies/.

ACE and OLLU Partnership! The Down Syndrome Association and Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) have partnered together to help obtain volunteer tutors for our Adult Continuing Education (ACE) program. ACE provides tutoring for adults with Down syndrome (and other special needs) one time a week for 90 minutes in the areas of reading, math and writing. As part of this partnership, a special education college course at OLLU allows students the opportunity to participate in our tutoring program. These tutors are future special education teachers, so this is a great opportunity to provide firsthand experience. During the fall semester of 2014, we had three OLLU students provide tutoring for three of our students. These future educators provided tutoring from AugustDecember and did an excellent job of engaging our students, while developing a friendship that they all value. This opportunity has left such an impression on the OLLU students that two have agreed to continue their tutoring experience beyond their fall semester commitment! This is fantastic news for the ACE program, and we look forward to continuing this partnership with OLLU in the future. If you have a son or daughter 18 years of age or older that would like to participate in our ACE program, please contact Oralia Lara at the DSASTX office or email olara@dsastx.org. We are currently recruiting more students to keep this program growing! Thanks to OLLU for this great experience! Thanks to Cristiana, Sarah and Danielle for providing great tutoring services for Sandy, Phillip and Patrick! Calling Adults with Special Needs! • Do you have a son/ daughter with Down syndrome or other special need age 18 years or older? • Would you like him/her to receive 90 minutes of tutoring in reading and math? Then the ACE Program may be for you! The Down Syndrome Association of South Texas is recruiting new students who could benefit from tutoring on a weekly basis. The ACE program provides: • An assessment to determine the student’s educational level and goals • Individualized lessons in reading, math, and writing • Weekly 90-minute tutoring sessions • Improvement in self-determination and self-advocacy • A safe and positive learning environment SIGN UP NOW! She is determined to help make a difference in the lives of people with DS through education, awareness, creation of opportunities and research. It is her hope that the DSASTX will continue to grow, both in size and service, so that we may meet every need of our families. Self-Advocate News

by Jessaca Bond

Are you ready for a new year, a new you and unbelievable possibilities? For me, I say “yes” so let’s get to it. Since we are in a New Year, I wanted to do an article about New Year’s resolutions. The definition of a resolution is: A firm Jessaca Bond decision to do or not to do something. A New Year’s resolution is a tradition common throughout many countries in which a person makes a promise of self-improvement, to learn a new skill, to change a bad habit, or work on good habits. New Year’s Day celebrations began before Christian times beginning with the Babylonians. The month of January gets its name from Janus, the two-faced god who looks backward into the old year and forward into the new. The custom of setting New Year’s resolutions began during this period in Rome; they made resolutions with moral flavor, mostly to be good to others. But when the Roman Empire took Christianity as its official state religion in the 4th century, these moral intentions were replaced by a more serious commitment to change behavior. Later on, the Puritans urged their children to spend their time reflecting on the year to come. In this way, they adopted the old custom of making resolutions, a commitment to better employ their talents and treat their neighbor with charity. The custom of making New Year’s resolutions has been going strong ever since. Every New Year’s Eve, I write down my personal resolutions that I want to accomplish in the year to come. Here are some of my own commitments to share with you: • I want to begin to learn Spanish. I want to be able to speak to more people on behalf of the DSASTX and just in conversation. • I want to continue reading through the Bible. I started this resolution last year, and I am currently in the book of Isaiah. • I want to finish the Mortal Instrument series of books that I am currently reading. I am in the City of Fallen Angels and have two more books to read. I already have another series of books that my sister got me for Christmas that I am anxious to get started on! I am also looking forward to being a part of the new DSASTX book reading club that’s starting up soon! • I want to get a Kindle HD Fire. I have been talking about it for the last two years; this year I’m just going to do it! • I want to spend more time just listening to music; I love music and I love the way it makes me feel good. Whatever your resolutions are, I hope you are successful in accomplishing them. In conclusion, I just want to wish everyone a Happy New Year! *The information on the history of New Year’s resolutions came from an online article titled, “History of New Year’s Resolutions: Where did they Begin?” by Bill Petro. http://billpetro.com/history-of-new-years-resolutions

Meet Jayden By Javier, Kathleen & Family

The Big Give S.A. is a 24-hour online giving day brought to us by a partnership between the San Antonio Nonprofit Council and the San Antonio Area Foundation. San Antonio has joined a national movement known as Give Local America which will take place this year on May 5. This date should be easy for San Antonians to remember because we will already be celebrating Cinco de Mayo! Now we will also be celebrating all of the local nonprofit organizations that benefit our community. The DSASTX participated in last year’s first ever citywide giving day and, THANKS to our wonderful families and generous supporters, we raised just over $4,600! The Big Give S.A. is not just about raising money for local nonprofits, it is about bringing the community together to demonstrate how much we appreciate one another because we are #StrongerTogether. On May 5th you can participate in this national movement by helping us spread the word and increasing awareness of how the DSASTX has impacted your life or your loved one’s life. You can also donate $10 or more to the Down Syndrome Association on the Big Give S.A. website. Please visit www.thebiggivesa.org for more information and watch us in action on Facebook at www.facebook.com/downsynstx or Twitter at www.twitter.com/downsynstx.

Jayden is a remarkable four-year-old little boy who was born with Down syndrome. He has always been pretty close to normal growing up, not much different than his two older brothers. On October 30, 2013 at the age of about two and a half, he was diagnosed with ALL (Leukemia). Children with Down syndrome have about a 28% higher chance of developing this disease. We were devastated when we were presented with the diagnosis! We were already dealing with a child with special needs and now this?

Jayden

With the help of family, friends, and endless prayers from everywhere, we were given strength from our Lord to fight this battle. He underwent two unsuccessful rounds of chemo. By the grace of God, his 16-year-old brother, Matthew, turned out to be a perfect match for a bone marrow transplant. On May 14th, which ironically is Jayden’s birthday, he was given his second chance at life. We spent about 45 days at Methodist Children’s Hospital. This consisted of endless nights of mucositis, breathing tubes, and no sleep. As parents, during these times, you just weather the storm any way that you can. Jayden is now doing so well. He has so many therapists and still has a lot of doctor’s visits, but we are so thankful to everyone who has been in his life. We want to give special thank yous to the Down Syndrome Association of South Texas, Methodist Children’s Hospital, Children’s Hospital of San Antonio, University Hospital, Transplants for Children, and Steven May and staff from The GAP. So many amazing and wonderfully kind people from these places have played a special part in our lives, and we are grateful.

Special Teams Soccer Spring 2015 Season Practices begin Saturday, February 7th at 3:00 p.m. and Tuesday, February 10th at 6:00 p.m. Practices will be every Saturday and Tuesday at the Lower Bee Tree fields in McAllister Park. Registration fee is $60. If you have any questions, please contact Jackie Thompson at specialteamssoccer@sbcglobal.net.
