ered one of the most welcoming and festive cities in the U.S. During the holidays this spirit is allthe-more evident with numerous celebrations from early November through the first week of January, many of which are free to the public. CULTURE A unique aspect of San Antonio during the holidays is the city’s culturally rich roots, which range from Mexico and Spain to Germany and beyond, and can be experienced in many forms throughout the destination. From learning how to make authentic tamales and participating in a traditional celebration of Las Posadas to watching the annual Chanukah boat parade; from a memorable performance of The Nutcracker to an unforgettable mariachi musical concert by world-renowned Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán, the holidays in the Alamo City are a great time to experience the diversity of the community. Visually, San Antonio literally shines; more than 2,000 traditional Mexican luminarias line the River Walk, SeaWorld features more than 9 million lights – more than anywhere else in Texas – and oversized and lit-up Christmas trees are all over town. Fredericksburg cultivates more than half of the world’s grape varietals and is located just a short drive west of Austin and San Antonio. The quaint town includes notable wineries such as Fall Creek Vineyards, whose wines are featured throughout restaurants in Texas and New York, and Becker Vineyards, whose 2013 Provencal won a double gold medal at the 2014 San Francisco International Wine Competition. While in Fredericksburg, experience some of the town’s authentic German culture, which

comes across in its food, festivals and architecture, as German immigrants settled the town over 160 years ago. Those looking to take a self-guided tour of the Hill Country wineries will enjoy a drive down Wine Road 290, which encompasses 13 award-winning wineries along US Highway 290. coastline, there’s no better way to take in the Texas Gulf Coast than by water. Boating may be the conventional way to make the journey, but for those looking for an exhilarating adventure and an intimate encounter with the coast’s natural treasures, nothing compares to a kayaking trip. Whether you prefer a leisurely float with incomparable scenery or a challenging trail that will take you off the beaten path, grab a paddle and get ready for a kayaking experience you’ll never forget. SOUTH PADRE ISLAND Formed three thousand years ago, the Laguna Madre in South Padre Island covers 130 miles of coast and is surrounded by the Lower Rio Grande Wildlife Refuge, the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge and the Padre Island National Seashore. You’re bound to catch some incredible views and see wildlife roaming the shore, or get the catch of the day as the shallow waters are perfect for light spinning tackle. GALVESTON AREA Kayakers interested in exploring unique plant life should head up the coast to Galveston. While Galveston is primarily known for its pristine beaches and historic homes, it’s also home to thousands of

acres of healthy wetlands. With the largest seagrass habitat on the upper Texas coast, a number of trails are available to explore the beauty of the bay, including a 19-mile route that leads to more than 200 acres of seagrass. To make a day of it, take a break from your exploration and enjoy a picnic on the beach or take advantage of your surroundings and do some bird watching, as Galveston is one of the top birding destinations in the U.S. In fact, the Galveston Bay Estuary is the largest and most productive on

the Texas coast with more than 500 species of birds residing, wintering, or migrating through southeast Texas. A FISHING EXTRAVAGANZA For fishing enthusiasts, every anglers dream

comes true in the popular Matagorda Bay. Most enthusiasts are familiar with the Matagorda Bay but may not have explored the bay in its entirety, as 35 miles of the shoreline is only accessible by boat. This virtually untapped area gives anglers the advantage and the element of surprise while sneaking up on redfish, trout and flounder. With more than five different trails, the kayaking possibilities of Matagorda Bay are endless. For a guided tour, take part in the Matagorda Kayak Excursions offered by the Lower

19

Colorado River Authority (LCRA) through the LCRA’s Matagorda Bay Nature Park. Excursions are offered on Saturdays during the spring and summer seasons and accommodate all skill levels as well as paddling instructions for beginners. If you’d prefer to venture out on your own, rent a kayak from the LCRA and explore the 1,600 acres of the nature park. Some of the Bay’s most popular trails include one that passes by the Lydia Ann, a historic lighthouse close to the wildlife refuge, and one that goes along the riverbanks the Karankawa Indians and early settlers called home. PORT O’CONNOR For authentic trails that take you off the beaten path, look no further than Port O’Connor, a small fishing town and the “Best Kept Secret in Texas” on Matagorda Bay with several trails and islands marked by the locals. Be careful though, you’ll get more trail recommendations than you have time to paddle! One of the most popular trails goes through Saluria Bay, where it’s common to see dolphins swimming and jumping through the deep waters. Another passes the Matagorda Island Lighthouse, which has been standing since 1852. With so much history, wildlife and coastline to see, take your Gulf Coast adventure into your own hands and paddle away. For a comprehensive guide to kayaking in the Lone Star State, consult Texas Parks and Wildlife’s paddling trails site. PERFECT GETAWAY Grab your paddle and cruise along the Texas coastline. Take in the scenic beaches and unique wildlife that make Texas kayaking like no other. Whether you prefer the stillness of dawn or the liveliness of midday exploring, kayaking in Texas is a transformative experience that is be enjoyed by all.

TRAVELING?

5 tips for healthy eating

by: Bridget Therese

raveling and staying healthy can sometimes be a challenge. Below, our Wellness Travel Expert, Bridget Therese offers some convenient solutions for your next adventure.

T

1) BRING SNACKS - It may sound like a lot of trouble, but trust me on this one! If you have a favorite protein bar or even a meal replacement shake, this is a great opportunity to pack them and bring them with you. Why? Because if you can get small yet satisfying meals in throughout the day, you will be way less likely to splurge on other high calorie meals. Another bonus, it will save you money and time! 2) PLAN YOUR SPLURGES No true vacation is complete without that amazing breakfast or dinner, let’s be honest! But instead of having 18 amazing dinners, plan just a couple that you can look forward to and know that you will enjoy every moment of it to your little hearts content. Not every meal has to be epic, but plan a couple epic meals and enjoy the heck out of it, guilt free! 3) PLAN WHERE TO EAT AHEAD OF TIME - When you aren’t having one of your epic meals, do make healthy choices. One of the best ways to do this is to research restaurants as part of your travel and trip planning. Find a few places that offer healthier options. The great thing about traveling these days is that more and more restaurants are offering healthier choices. You just need to do a little foot work and scout them out. Planning ahead of time saves

the “where do you wanna eat? I don’t know, where do you wanna eat?” conversation and keeps you on the healthy track. 4) DON’T BE AFRAID TO MODIFY YOUR MENU ITEMS - I’m not saying be that person who orders the Roasted Chicken with Asiago Polenta and Truffled Mushrooms and then asks them to remove everything cook it on different spices and basically makes up a whole new dish on the spot! No, I’m talking about simple changes that won’t embarrass your friends and family, but still save the calories. Try asking for veggies to be steamed, or cooked “dry” no butter or oil. Ask for your fajitas to be cooked dry, ask for whole wheat pancakes, and egg white omelets. There are simple modifications that can you can request but go a long way. 5) CAREFUL WITH DRINKS - Just like planning out your splurge meals, be mindful of your drinks too. Those calories add up really quickly! Especially on vacation, it’s easy to keep the drinks flowing, but don’t forget about water! When you are in a hot beachy climate, it’s extra important to hydrate. Alternate drinks with water, don’t have drinks with every meal and always plan a sober ride. holistic “healing” through mind training and selfawareness, as opposed to treating specific illness or injuries. While each retreat can be tailor-made to suit individual goals, there is a regular schedule of immersive programs lead by experts in each area, which range in duration from 3 to 14 days long. This includes: • Emotional balance and mind training • Detox & organic weight loss • Sleep well • Anti-ageing & longevity • Destress & Relax • Mother-to-be Fitness is a key component of each retreat, which REVĪVŌ incorporates through a hybrid fitness area located on 8,000 square metres of verdant and peaceful land towards the rear of the resort. The area is comprised of a yoga barn, a martial arts hall, a reformer Pilates studio, a gym with TRX, boxing

and kinesis equipment, a 25-metre-long lap pool for aqua workouts and a 1,500 square metre landscaped park for outdoor exercises. The fitness offering focuses on hybrid workouts, with as much emphasis placed on inspiration as perspiration. There is a balance between the more intensive Yang - with heart-pumping HIIT sessions, and the softer Yin - with yoga and other gentler meditative and restorative practices like Qi Gong and meditation to simultaneously cultivate physical, mental and spiritual well-being. From group classes to private sessions or teacher trainings, the experience is completely customizable to support unique fitness and wellness goals. FOOD & BEVERAGE The food and beverage programme is equally important and is comprised of a restaurant, a Bar, and a pool side lounge, each of which operate under the philosophy of serving fresh, wholesome, organic and balanced meals for guests. Each venue serves food and drinks as close to their natural state as possible, with a mission to sharpen and delight taste buds, while continuously supporting health. Carefully designed by REVĪVŌ’s creative nutritionist chef, Aliwalu, the menus offer a selection of healthy recipes made with seasonal ingredients that will be adapted to suit each guest’s nutritional needs. The focus is on high protein dishes, which have a balanced amount of healthy fats, are low in carbs and free from gluten - with a Balinese twist. Using the finest organic ingredients, REVĪVŌ aims to support local farmers, sustainable agriculture and

environmentally friendly products, with no additives, preservatives or refined or processed ingredients in any of the dishes. HOLISTIC SPA The third component of REVĪVŌ is the holistic spa, which brings together authentic ancient Balinese healing traditions, aroma, hydro and chromo therapies and facilities to nurture the body and achieve overall well-being and balance. The spa stays true to the age-old tradition of using elements from the surrounding environments to heal – each therapeutic treatment, restorative massage and nurturing body and facial treatment is customised by highly skilled therapists using herbal-infused oils, aromas and massage techniques. The spa is comprised of five double treatment rooms, each with their own outdoor bath, and features two hydro jet Vichy shower beds, hot and chill plunge pools, a Jacuzzi, infrared saunas, steam rooms, gorgeous changing rooms, an aromatic garden and a salt water floating pool set amidst tropical greenery. TELEHEALTH

N

healthcare just a click away

obody plans on getting strep throat or twisting their ankle while on vacation or traveling for work. But when it happens, you can use your iPhone, Android or any mobile device to access a physician, get medical advice or, if needed, a prescription. It’s called telehealth, the delivery of healthcare via phone, tablet or computer, and it has the potential to save every consumer – and our nation’s healthcare system, including employers -- substantial amounts of time and money. Telehealth makes it possible for everyone to access quality, affordable care: • Individuals with limited benefits or little-to-no insurance coverage • Travelers who are on-the-road for business or recreation and need medical attention for non-emergent illnesses • People who forget to pack their prescription medications – or simply run out of Rx products COST-EFFECTIVE, CONVENIENT The fastest-growing segment of services in telehealth are those connecting consumers with clinicians 24/7. Typically, these are for nonemergency issues such as colds, flu, earaches and skin rashes, and they cost around $45 per consultation, compared with approximately $100 at a doctor’s office, $160 at an urgent-care clinic or $750+ at an emergency room. Some direct-to-consumer services enable users to connect 24/7 via phone or video with a boardcertified physician who can either prescribe medication or provide advice on what to do. They also offer nurse advice lines to provide answers to medical questions day or night, and the ability to email a specialist to get a quick response from a physician, dentist, pharmacist or other healthcare specialist. The popularity of telehealth comes on the heels of a trend in which employers are moving away from fully-insured health plans toward self-insurance, as

well as the rise of consumer-driven health plans or high-deductible plans that shift more of the costburden and decision-making responsibility onto the employees and their families. Bottom line: Telehealth makes it possible for everyone to drastically reduce out-of-pocket medical expenses. SAVES TIME, INCREASES PRODUCTIVITY Scheduling a doctor visit requires time off from work, dealing with unpredictable medical bills, and long wait times. For many, it can take an average of 24 days to schedule an appointment with a doctor, and can mean waiting for at least an hour to see the doctor. With the growing doctor shortage, fueled by aging baby boomers and population growth, this situation is likely to get worse. By providing access to medical advice more quickly than traditional office visits, telehealth can prevent individuals from needing care or getting sicker than necessary, and can also minimize lost productivity costs. FINDING RIGHT TELEHEALTH SERVICE Employers and consumers should look for a direct-to-consumer healthcare service that offers comphrehensive, nationwide telehealth connectivy at a low annual rate that covers the entire family. The service should rely on the highest quality physicians and use a large number of guidelines developed specifically for delivering care remotely, including a five-point scale for determining whether a sore throat, for example, is likely due to streptococcus infection that warrants antibiotics. By increasing access to physicians and specialists, telehealth can help ensure that patients receive the right care, at the right place, at the right time. s Oregon’s grandest peak, Mt. Hood is home to three incredible and diverse ski resorts. Timberline Lodge & Ski Area is the only ski-in, ski-out lodge in the state, Mt. Hood Meadows offers more than 2,150 acres of skiing and Mt. Hood Skibowl has the largest night skiing terrain in the United States. Conveniently located 90 minutes from Portland International Airport, on Mt. Hood you can ski with locals, enjoy a beer at a craft brewery, spend the night in a mountain resort, follow snowshoe trails through old growth forests and experience what makes Oregon’s Mt. Hood Territory a truly special place. Each ski season, resorts on Mt. Hood upgrade and improve their visitor experience. Here’s what’s new this winter: America’s largest night ski area gets even bigger Mt. Hood Skibowl has been busy this offseason with a number of improvements. They expanded their night ski terrain with the addition of two new lit runs, bringing the total to 36. The new lights allow visitors to now ski from the top of Upper Bowl all the way to the bottom of the hill.

It wasn’t just the lights that expanded at Skibowl; they also increased their snowmaking ability with a new system that allows the resort to make snow even when temperatures are above freezing. They have also expanded snowmaking capacity farther up the mountain on Lower Bowl, helping the resort build a base of snow in two locations now. Skibowl also purchased a new winch snow grooming machine, which will allow workers to groom even the steeps of Upper Bowl for the first time. And thanks to a parking lot enlargement, they increased capacity by 150 spots. Mt. Hood’s largest resort introduces new ticket

pricing system In an effort to improve the experience and better manage crowds during peak ski season, Mt. Hood Meadows has implemented a new ticket pricing system. Similar to how airline ticket pricing works, the demand for lift tickets will dictate the prices. During off-peak days, Meadows will drop ticket prices with the goal of enticing people to ski during those times, helping alleviate congestion and crowds. To make sure the runs are in perfect condition, Mt. Hood Meadows purchased a pair of new snow grooming machines. These are added to an already impressive fleet of grooming equipment and will be used for general grooming, as well as for designing and maintaining features in the terrain parks.

Summit is located below Timberline in the town of Government Camp, and workers are remodeling Summit’s interior while holding on to the single-chairlift operation’s familyfriendly, affordable vibe. Summit is an ideal location to get the basics of skiing or snowboarding down before heading up to more challenging runs at Timberline.
