CLARKSVILLE, TENNESSEE

arrange an audacious summer vacation

B

oating, fishing, kayaking, golf, disc golf, mountain biking, hiking, cycling, spelunking and rock climbing…how’s that for an adventure seeker’s paradise? Adventure travelers will find all these activities and more, plus a surprising diversity of local restaurants and breweries in Clarksville, Tennessee, just 40 minutes northwest of Nashville on I-24 and within a day’s drive for about 66% of Americans. Dunbar Cave State Park Dunbar Cave State Park is one of the region’s most popular outdoor sites. This 144-acre natural playground includes almost five miles of trails, picnic areas, wildlife and seasonal cave tours. The cave is the only public cave in the world where Native American Mississippian Art dating to the 14 Century is visible. The cave is also a stop on the Tennessee Music Pathways, celebrating its history as a venue for popular Big Bands in the 40s and WSM Radio broadcasts in the 50s. The meandering Cumberland Riverwalk is the city’s crown jewel, where the whole family can enjoy walking, biking, boating or finding a swing to take in a spectacular sunset. The Riverwalk connects directly to Clarksville’s

historic downtown restaurants, entertainment, shopping, and public art via the urban Upland Trail. At its opposite end (north), the trail intersects and follows the Red River for a six-mile out-and-back total. Paddlers can launch from the Red River at six public access points. Kayakers and canoers can float for 2-14 miles with local outfitters, with stops for swimming and bluff jumping. Rotary Park Rotary Park is a 111-acre forested local park with five-plus miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, creeks, playgrounds, disc golf and picnic areas. You’ll also find large, open spaces for play and an impressive new 4,200-square-foot Nature Center with displays and handson activities that show the natural history of the area. Cycling enthusiasts will enjoy a range of trails at North Ford Street Mountain Bike Park – from a newly constructed children’s area to technical routes that challenge even the most advanced riders. Climbers of all skill levels will have fun and relish the bird’s-eye river views at King’s Bluff Park. The limestone crag is 9.78 acres with more than 160 routes traversing the Cumberland. ICONIC GHOSTBAR RETURNS experience the nightlife at the palms

he return of the beloved Ghostbar at Palms Casino Resort is official. Originally debuting in 2001, this widely popular bar and lounge perched high atop the 55th floor, quickly became one of the city’s most treasured nightspots featuring the most spectacular and stunning views of the entire Las Vegas skyline. Today, after a ghostly disappearing act, Palms has not only brought the Ghostbar back, but it has also reimagined it as the city’s newest, elevated and most intimate Ultra Lounge experience. “When we announced the reopening of the Palms Casino Resort, the first question we received was will the Ghostbar return?” notes Cynthia Kiser Murphey, general manager Palms Casino Resort. “The outpouring of love for this venue was beyond our imagination, and we are so proud to bring it back to the Las Vegas community and excited to usher in a new era. We look forward to creating new ghost stories for all

T

of those that visited in the past, as well as welcome a new generation to experience it for the very first time.” New Heights... Guests to the Ghostbar begin their experience the minute they are whisked up the private elevator to the 55th floor. Transported to new heights, Ghostbar visitors are enthralled by the unparalleled views that await them as they turn the corner and enter the sleek lounge. From the Red Rocks to the west to Downtown Las Vegas in the north to the famed Las Vegas Strip in the east to the new Allegiant Stadium in the south, there is literally no point in the city that is not visible from Ghostbar. With a design that is intimate and inviting, the true star is the sky-high outdoor deck. By design, Ghostbar is a venue that is meant to be experienced both inside and outside. Unlike other nightspots in Las Vegas, Ghostbar’s DNA will be based on a concept that is exclusively inclusive.

ESCAPE TO PORTUGAL a cornucopia of experiences by: Carla Pallares

fter two years of being unable to travel internationally, we finally did; it was everything I needed. I couldn’t have asked for a better week visiting Lisbon and Porto. Portugal is the perfect combination of white sandy beaches, architecturally beautiful cities, mountainous coastlines, and a booming food scene. Please let’s not forget the amazing wine that comes from here as well. Portugal also happens to be one of the most affordable international destinations and incredibly safe, making it an excellent getaway for family travel or solo female travelers. Lisbon has become a hub for nomads and ex-pats from all over the world, but there’s so much more to see than Portugal’s capital city—there’s the Algarve, Sintra, the Alentejo, Obidos, and Braga, and so much more. Lisbon I fell in absolute awe of Lisbon. It has everything you need from old charming Medieval streets to modern stores

A

and buildings, a water view, history, and some amazing food spots. Lisbon’s Alfama neighborhood was my absolute favorite. It winds its way up one of the seven hills, from the main downtown area of Baixa to the medieval Castelo do São Jorge on top. It is Lisbon’s oldest neighborhood as it was one of the only areas spared from the 1755 earthquake/tsunami/fire nightmare. During Moorish times, the Alfama was the whole city. The neighborhood includes the oldest Cathedral (Se Cathedral), and the best miradouros (Portas do Sol, Miradouro de Santa Luzia, and Miradouro da Graça). It’s very popular with tourists, but you can still get lost. We found ourselves alone in its magical maze of narrow, winding streets, tiny alleys, and quaint squares. Wandering the intricate streets of Lisbon was my favorite thing to do – hills and all. Dedicate at least a few hours to exploring each of the neighborhoods.

Baixa and Chiado Baixa and Chiado districts are located in the heart of Lisbon, where you will find most of the historical monuments and the famous shopping street. It’s a tourist hotspot so it can get very hectic during the day. Attractions in Baixa-Chiado:Rua Augusta, Praça Luís de Camões, Praça do Comércio, Convento do Carmo, and Livraria Bertran. Bairro Alto And Alfama These are my favorite districts to explore in Lisbon. Alfama’s narrow and maze-like streets are great to get lost in – and. Barrio Alto offers all the trendy restaurants and bars in the city – at night, this neighborhood comes to life! Note: In Alfama, you will find locals selling homemade cherry liquor on the street or from their home windows. It’s a local drink thanks to a friar, who soaked ginja berries (sour cherries) in Portuguese brandy, then sweetened it up with sugar and cinnamon. Definitely give it a try because it’s actually really good and an experience you won’t get anywhere else! LX Factory LX Factory, the trendy quarter of Lisbon where you can lose track of time browsing all the cool shops or sipping coffee at an artsy café, amid street art and factory buildings. We almost didn’t make it here because there was just too much to see but we fell in love and we were so glad we did. You’ll spend enough time here exploring all the food spots, beer and wine shops, empanada stands, the most unique stores, and cute corners for pictures. It’s a definite win. A couple of other things you want to see: Tram28 Santa Justa Lift Castelo de São Jorge – Jorge Castle - Timeout Market Porto The second-largest city in Portugal and one of the most beautiful places in Western Europe, Porto is a dream destination. Surrounded by the beautiful beaches dotting the Costa Verde shoreline, the heart of Porto is a Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, and it’s a must-see for any history lover. But the city’s world-famous Port wine is what really put this place as one of our favorite places. If you are traveling to Portugal or anywhere in the Iberian Peninsula, you absolutely can’t miss the chance

35

to explore Porto. It’s not as ‘new’ as Lisbon but it has so much old charm and character. We absolutely loved it as well, even though it was much different than Lisbon. You can spend hours wandering the cobbled streets, relaxing by the Douro, or hopping from wine cellar to wine cellar. There’s a heavy emphasis on history, art, culture, and food in Porto—and there’s something for every traveler to discover. The Ribeira district This district is Porto‘s historical city center and gets its name from its location on the river. At the heart of the district is a large square, opening up to the river and surrounded by shops and restaurants. We loved strolling along the river, watching the street performers and the Rabelo boats glide by. Tall and colorful row houses are crammed along the river bank, creating maze-like streets, similar to the Alfama. Ponte de Dom Luis I This bridge is spectacular. It’s the bridge linking Porto and Gaia, and is a site to see in and of itself. It is the perfect vantage to both sides of the metro and I’d recommend going during Sunset to see the lighting of the city. We were not able to do that but it was still beautiful during the day. Cross to Gaia and stop by all the different wine cellars and wine taste your way thru it all. Livaria Lello Livaria Lello is one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world. Plus, JK Rowling used to hang around here when she started writing her Harry Potter series. We were not able to enter because of the long line (long line with a baby is not ideal) but I’m sure it’s totally worth it…so they say. A couple of other things you want to see: Wine Tasting in Gaia (cross the bridge by foot because it’s breathtaking). Enjoy the tile art (most beautiful tile art all over the city on floors, buildings, and houses). Crystal Palace Gardens Clérigos Tower My one week in Portugal was so memorable that I’m writing this three months later and still get travel chills. The country is just so charming, and the people we met were so kind and it was honestly very inexpensive compared to other European countries so our dollar went a long way.

EXPERIENCING GUATEMALA turning moments into memories

by: Melissa Mireles

began my adventure in the biggest city in Central America, Guatemala City. Greeted by fresh air and busy streets, I caught a cab to meet my best friend. We started our journey down the path of many trees and celebrate a friend’s 5 year anniversary. We housed in the Mercado Central, a block off the main square in Guatemala City Zona Uno. Full of color and spirit, the area was breathtaking with bold crafts, warm colored embroideries, and leather garments; you could see the passion within each stitch. We unapologetically indulged in traditional dishes including Chicken pepián and empanadas while drinking a Gallo beer. I noticed that corn was featured predominantly in almost all Guatemalan cuisines. History Lessons We participated in the city tour to learn Guatemalan history; fun facts galore. Did you know this area is the home of the Mayan civilization? Nearly 40% of the population of Guatemala is indigenous. The country continues to recover from the Guatemalan Civil War which ended in 1996. Guatemala is renownedly known for its eight coffee regions with each region’s tastes being remarkably different. Guatemala is touted as the birthplace of chocolate, with the Mayans worshiping the cacao tree and calling chocolate the “food of the gods’’. Guatemalans have put their own twist to what once were old American school buses, better known as ”chicken buses,” local transportation painted with bold colors and patterns. Antigua-Bound After several days of exploring the city’s urban developments, we made our way to Antigua. A candy colored city surrounded by active volcanoes. Made up of open-air markets with a gardening appeal, and boomin coffee scene made it clear to me how attractive this was to tourists.

I

It came as no surprise that Guatemala’s second biggest money maker is tourism. People gathered to see what the city had to offer with many people surrounding the famous Arco de Santa Catalina. The city was safe and easy to navigate. We met our Airbnb host after our arrival, an eccentric creative whose home would make the average person do a double take. I was a fan. Anniversary Celebration The anniversary celebration festivities began with a meet and greet at the Porta Hotel Antigua. The hotel had great attention to detail with flowers and lights draping all around. Surrounded by medical professionals, I learned all

things dentistry. The official celebration was held the next evening at the Catholic Church of San Jose El Viejo which sat quietly in the south side of town until we arrived. Everyone was dressed to impress and the festivities began. I couldn’t help but look around and take in the moment, the energy was vibrant. We gathered in a different country to celebrate love, a practice I hope to partake in the future. Acatenango Volcano We called it an early night as we planned to take on the overnight hike to the Acatenango Volcano with Soy Tours.

41

An 8 mile hike to the third highest volcano in Central America. Feeling confident, we met our group at the pick up location. Travelers from all over the world gathered to witness the natural phenomenon. Our guides gave us the breakdown and reinforced that the hike was going to be difficult. We began with steps through farmland, the flat area was short lived as we made our way uphill. The biggest challenge was the elevation with altitude sickness affecting some of the group. I thought I was in good shape until I started breathing heavily 15 minutes in. I experienced feeling light headed and tingly sensations in my fingers recognizing that even fit individuals needed to pace themselves. After an uphill six mile hike to base camp, we were greeted by additional tour guides who directed us to our tents. As soon as I caught my breath, the guides announced the optional 2 mile hike to get closer to the volcano. Being my competitive self, I took on the second journey. The sharp wind and cold temperature struck my face when we arrived at the stopping point, and there went the Acatenango volcano erupting. What a site to see. We slept at 13,000 feet that evening. Reflections... I look back on this adventure today and realized I left the area with a joyful sensation. The experience was well suited for my best friend and I. We had the opportunity to meet friends across the works and I pushed my physical and mental self. These experiences are unforgettable. To quote the last words of my journal, “I can’t wait to come back!”

BEYOND WORDS

hearing more in egypt by: Adam Asher

remember Mohamad pulling over to the side of that dusty, two-lane highway north of Cairo. He didn’t say much about why we were stopping, so I assumed he was going to hop out and buy something for his family that perhaps wasn’t available back in the city. Instead, he simply signaled for me to get out and to follow him. And I did. Majestic Views In the days that preceded this one, Mohamad and his son had taken me to see so many historic sites around Egypt. I saw the Sphinx, the Great Pyramids of Giza, the Great Mosque of Muhammad Ali Pasha and so much more. I learned of papyrus, camels, the Nile and hieroglyphics. But the moment in time that stands out from that trip more than any other was this one. There I was, taking my boots off so I could follow Mohamad into that small, roadside shelter made of thatch and canvas. I paused for just a couple seconds at the doorway,

I

held my hat to my chest, smiled and looked around. This wasn’t my world. This was theirs. And I was being given the privilege to step into it. A Moment in Time I quickly took my place sitting on the floor of this shelter, joining several other guys who clearly had an important conversation going. I don’t speak Arabic, but they made me feel welcome as Mohamad translated the important parts to help me follow along. A few questions ensued about where I was from, what my life was like, and how often it snowed. Mostly however, I sat and listened to a conversation I couldn’t comprehend but somehow understood. The youngest in the group was a bit frustrated as he spoke. Something clearly just didn’t seem fair to him, and it made him angry. The oldest sat in silence for most of the conversation, though I did notice him chuckle at least twice. One of the guys was lost in thought. A couple of the

others saw the humor in it all, seeking to bring levity with what must have been jokes. My guide Mohamad spoke with firmness and assurance, inviting peace and acceptance to the conversation. I would never know the topic of discussion that day, but I didn’t need to. It still spoke to me. I looked around as they talked, paying attention to details I would never have even noticed had they been speaking English. I saw the breeze, the design on the Egyptian rug, the pile of sandals out front where my boots were resting. I saw their faces. This was their world. These were their struggles and their joys. This was their way. And though I had never been anywhere like this, it was all so familiar. I couldn’t help but think of all the things that separate us in life—and all the things that bind us together.

EASTERN TOWNSHIPS

gourmet tourism at it’s finest

he Eastern Townships is known as a destination for ‘gourmet tourism’ and indeed, it’s a rare visitor who isn’t tempted by the region’s (rightly acclaimed) food offerings. A taste of the Townships - in both senses of the word! can be enjoyed at its signature restaurants, its 30 vineyards (and equal number of microbreweries), along the Cheesemakers Circuit (Les Têtes Fromagères), in cozy village cafés (Cafés de village) and the farmers markets, that are scattered throughout the area. This summer, as in previous years, the region’s food producers, artisans and chefs, are also offering visitors many new gourmet delights…. L’Économusée® de la Fromagerie La Station The Fromagerie La Station, a cheesemaker in Compton, is finally opening its Économusée® to the general public. Visitors to the museum learn about the various processes involved in manufacturing cheese, through interpretation panels and a room designed to look like a traditional maturing cellar. The economuseum also has a boutique where

T

you can stock up on supplies or order a grilled cheese sandwich or a picnic basket filled with different cheeses. Cafetier de Sutton changes ownership After years of operating Le Cafetier de Sutton, the owners have passed the torch to Marconi, a chain of popular Montreal restaurants. Now rebranded as Mollies, the Sutton establishment is a combination café, snack bar and dinette with a redesigned menu featuring local products, wines and beverages, as well as a wide choice of coffees, roasted on site. Even more artisan cheesemakers The Les Têtes Fromagères circuit now includes 16 cheese manufacturers. The tour showcases the incredible diversity of artisan cheesemakers in the Townships and the quality of their products: fine cheeses, curds and raw milk, sheep’s and goat’s cheeses. This circuit includes the Fromagerie Nouvelle-France in Racine, the Fromagerie Des Cantons in Farnham and a number of others. A New branch of the Artisanal Bakery Dora A veritable institution in the village of Eastman,

Boulangerie Artisanale Dora is opening a another branch this summer, this time in Orford, where it will offer breakfast and lunch in its brand-new Espace Café. The popular bakery will continue to serve its long-time customers with baked goods, doughnuts, pastries, ready-to-go meals and local deli products. The original branch will also have an ‘Espace Café’ by the end of the summer. Beyond wine – gourmet experiences at the wineries! This summer, a number of gourmet experiences (in addition to the usual wine tastings), will be offered at the vineyards along the Brome-Missisquoi Wine Route. Château Ste-Agnès, for example, a historic, European-style winery, will have an on-site chef who will prepare a four-course, countrystyle meal or a ‘luxury’ picnic. Vignoble Gagliano, taking its inspiration from Italy, will offer wood-fired pizzas and wine, while Vignoble de la Bauge is planning wine-themed gastronomic events with cheesemakers, chefs, market gardeners and fishmongers, who will offer some insight into their respective professions. 40 Summer Public Markets Throughout the summer season, visitors will have the choice of visiting no fewer than 40 public and farmers markets – some well-established, others brand-new. Some markets are expanding beyond merely selling produce. Stoke Public Market, for instance, has added a bistro under a Big Top as well as a stage for live events. The Compton Evening Market (back for a seventh year) has also made some changes. It is adding new stalls and making the site more accessible to people with reduced mobility and families with strollers. Last, but not least, is the P’tit pub, the heart of the Marché de la petite école de Lingwick. Back after a twoyear break, it specializes in oven-fired pizza – delicious enough to satisfy the most discerning foodie! A geolocated map, a full list of Eastern Townships markets and their opening times, are available online.

49

Stock up for a picnic or a festive BBQ The Réseau des Haltes gourmandes in the HauteYamaska region of Granby, is a network of around 50 agritourism entities (including food producers and artisans) who offer gourmet tours during which visitors can buy (and sample) the freshest of seasonal products. All along the way, you’ll meet people who are passionate about their métier and it’s the ideal opportunity to enjoy the relaxing ambience of the countryside – source of the very ingredients that are part of the food-oriented tours. Themed around what happens to be in season at any particular time (in June you’ll find asparagus, mushrooms, haskap berries…..), the tours offer a number of different itineraries, so don’t forget to pack a cooler to plan a picnic or a festive BBQ! A rally and maple products The Ferme des Petits Torrieux near Lac Megantic, is once more welcoming visitors with a unusual way of exploring the farm, namely by taking part in a rally. Young and old will have fun discovering the animals in this unique manner and at the end, they can enjoy a snack in the recently added picnic area or the brand-new maple grove. These additions now mean that various maple products (maple taffy, maple butter, maple syrup, maple vinaigrette etc.) are going be available at the farm all year round. Other activities include pick-your-own, yoga, a winter safari and more…. Agritourism featured on the Val-Saint-François circuits The Val-Saint-François region is offering eight, oneday circuits this summer, some focusing on agritourism. Saddle up and follow the Agro-Vélo circuit to visit places such as Gouin Park, Le Campagnard (a cheesemaker), the Café du Couvent and the Lussiers Belgians Farm. On the Rando-Gourmande circuit, you can spend the day by car and on foot around the area between Stoke and Windsor. Get ideas from the website and follow one of the routes by listening to the podcast.
