San Antonio

A Holiday Destination

T

he holiday season in San Antonio is an especially magical time with an array of activities and events. In this cultural and historic city, visitors can relax with a cup of Mexican hot chocolate while beautifully decorated river barges glide along the River Walk. Bazaars and markets sell one-of-a-kind gifts. Plus, a popular tamale festival provides the most delicious treats of all. Light It Up Thousands of holiday lights adorn the River Walk while many cultural festivities promise an unforgettable getaway. Along the river, almost 200 trees are decorated with twinkling lights and 20 street bridges are colorfully illuminated with various patterns. The City of San Antonio holds a Light Up Downtown Holiday Contest that encourages downtown business owners to compete for the most decorative and creative use of LED lights. The result is a lit up river and street that combines for one magical holiday destination.

The River Walk is also home to the Ford Fiesta de las Luminarias. This centuries-old tradition takes place on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from December 4 - December 20, when the River Walk is lined with several thousand luminarias (small paper lanterns) to symbolically light the way for the Holy Family. Another River Walk favorite is the Ford Holiday River Boat Caroling. From December 4 - December 20, more than 185 choirs ring in the holidays by singing traditional carols on cruising barges. The eclectic mix of participants includes bell choirs, folk groups and Latino ensembles. continued on page 10

Rock n Roll Marathon I

magine hanging out with 25,000 of your closest friends in the heart of the Alamo City? For the past eight years, San Antonio has played host to the Humana Rock n Roll Marathon put on by the Competitor Group. Each year, the marathon grows in prestige and stature - adding events such as a 5K, 10K and even a half marathon relay. But, what really makes this such an attraction during the early part of December is the city. San Antonio offers some of the best attractions, venues,

dining options and healthy alternatives for anyone. All of these are just a sample of why the Competitor Group extended their agreement with the city through 2020. Rocking the Course The course takes you through some of the city’s iconic areas - passing the world-famous Alamo, the King William Historic District, through the heart of downtown and if you are a fullmarathon runner - you get to see some of our World Heritage Site designated missions - truly an astonishing view. Natural Bridge Caverns

Texas’ Largest Underground Adventure

A

fascinating trip awaits guests of NATURAL BRIDGE CAVERNS, the largest show cave in Texas. What makes the Discovery Tour so awe-inspiring? The caverns, located in the Texas Hill Country and minutes from San Antonio, contain cave formations that are centuries in the making and still growing today. In March of 1960, four college students from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio obtained permission to explore the area. Lured by an amazing 60-foot limestone bridge and a large sinkhole, the explorers made numerous attempts to find the large underground passages they theorized were there. On their fourth expedition, Orion Knox Jr. felt a cool draft from a rubble-filled crawlway. Such air currents often indicate the presence of additional rooms or passages. Upon clearing this 60foot crawlway, the explorers made their way through two miles of vast cavern passage before returning to the surface to tell the landowners of their amazing discovery. The discoverers knew immediately what an astonishing find they had made and the land owners decided to develop the first ½ mile, the most spectacular part of the caverns, for the enjoyment of guests from around the world. Natural Bridge Caverns’ Discovery Tour was developed with two main goals in mind: preservation of the cavern system and comfort of its guests. The result is one of the world’s premier show caverns. The Discovery was opened to the public on July 3, 1964 and dedicated by Texas Governor John B. Connelly as a “Jewel in the crown of Texas’ attractions.” Natural Bridge Caverns has also been designated a State Historical Site and a Registered National Natural

Landmark. Guided Tours Your guided tour, which takes approximately 75 minutes, will take you through vast underground rooms. Discover Sherwood Forest, the Castle of the White Giants and the Hall of the Mountain King, a room the size of a football field. Amazing delicate crystalline formations and gigantic stone monuments fill these beautiful underground chambers. Since Natural Bridge Caverns opened to the public, hundreds of thousands of guests from all over the world have enjoyed the Discovery Tour. You are invited to see this spectacular natural wonder, too. For more information, visit Natural Bridge Caverns online at www.naturalbridgecaverns.com.

Brackenridge Golf Course Teeing Up 100 Years

he Alamo City Golf Trail hosted a press conference to announce the 100-year anniversary of Brackenridge Park Golf Course, Texas’s oldest municipal golf course. The golf course will officially celebrate 100 years in September 2016, but will spend this year commemorating the milestone in various ways. History... The press conference highlighted the golf course’s rich history in San Antonio and kicked off a yearlong effort to commemorate the anniversary. As the oldest public course in Texas, Brackenridge Park Golf Course has been a significant part of San Antonio’s history and continues to attract golfers and golf enthusiasts from all over the world today. “We are pleased to have the opportunity to showcase the history of this San Antonio gem,” said Jim Roschek, President and CEO of the Municipal Golf Association. “As the home of Texas Golf Hall of Fame, the historic Borglum Studio, and the original home of the Texas Open, Brackenridge Golf Course holds a special place in this city’s development and it’s future.” Early Beginnings Developed on land donated by George W. Brackenridge, the golf course was designed by notable golf architect A.W. Tillinghast, recent inductee into the World

T

Golf Hall of Fame. The Borglum Studio, an event center overlooking the 17th hole of the golf course, was originally a pump house that eventually became an artist’s studio for Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor of the heads of the U.S. Presidents on Mount Rushmore. Such is the distinguished history of many features of the golf course. Throughout it’s 99th year, the Alamo City Golf Trail, which manages San Antonio’s municipal golf courses, will showcase the course’s history through various events, tournaments, and a public relations campaign. The press conference took place at the historic Borglum Studio at the Brackenridge Park Golf Course and a newly developed 100-year anniversary logo was unveiled.

Medical Travel:101

What Patients Should Know Before Departure

by: Laura Carabello

bout seven million people travel abroad each year seeking care related to everything from dental work and weight-loss surgery to cancer treatment, according to Bloomberg Business. A growing number of companies now offer a medical travel benefit, enabling employees to access high quality, more affordable care, whether abroad or in another U.S. state.

A

Here’s a look at the top five medical destinations in the world: 1. Thailand Thailand provides access to major procedures that are 50 to 70 percent cheaper than in the U.S. 2. Mexico Mexico attracts more than one million visiting patients each year, many of whom seek dental work and weightloss surgery. 3. United States The nation’s medical Centers of Excellence (COE) offer high quality, more affordable surgical procedures than what is typically available locally. 4. Singapore Singapore offers 22 facilities certified by the Joint Commission International, the U.S.-based quality and safety accrediting organization. 5. India India is known for offering high-difficulty operations, such as coronary artery bypass graft surgery, at 90 percent less cost than in the U.S. Before traveling for care, employees should make sure they have a full understanding of: • Financial incentives – These should not limit the diagnostic and therapeutic alternatives that are offered to patients or restrict treatment or referral options. • Medical Center – The hospitals should be accredited by recognized international accrediting bodies, such as the Joint Commission International. • Prior to Travel – Make sure that local follow-up care has been coordinated and financing arranged to ensure continuity of care. • Rights – Employees should be informed of their rights and legal recourse before agreeing to travel,

especially if traveling outside the U.S. • Medical Records – Make sure that when medical records are transferred they meet Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Action (HIPAA) guidelines. • Risks – Employees should have a full understanding of the potential risks of combining surgical procedures with long flights and vacation activities. Medical travel is a win-win for employer and employee alike. It’s a way to access the best possible care – no matter where it is located – at reasonable prices, even when the expense of travel, including airline and accommodations, are taken into account. About the Author Laura Carabello has been an entrepreneur and a strategy consultant in both domestic and international businesses related to health care and technology since 1985. She is the publisher/managing editor of Medical Travel Today, the authoritative, online business-to-business international newsletter of the medical tourism industry (www.medicaltraveltoday.com), as well as US Domestic Medical Travel (www.USDomesticMedicalTravel.com), the newsletter dedicated to U.S. intra-state and inbound medical travel. In 2011, Carabello published Medical Travel Today: Opinions and Perspectives on an Industry in the Making.

Another Incredible Experience

Floridian Meets N.C.

Experiences

by: Christa Thompson, www.TheFairyTaleTraveler.com

ake no mistake, North Carolina is exceptionally beautiful all year around, but there’s something particular about its Blue Ridge Mountains during the fall months. Especially when you’re a Floridian who sees nothing of fall unless you wander. I’ve been taking the North Carolina ‘destination fall’ road trip with my son for years. Not only has it become a tradition, but a necessity. After months of long summer heat, we’re ready for that crisp cool air at autumn first crack. So, like clockwork, every second to third week of October, we pack up and head for the mountains in search of much needed quality time, adventure and of course, those amazing fall colors. Our final destination: Linville Falls, North Carolina to the Linville Falls Trailer Lodge & Campground.

M

Linville Falls Trailer Lodge & Campground When you want to get away, unplug and just get yourself a little dirtier than usual, Linville Falls is the place to do it. We stumbled upon this gem about four years ago on a misadventure from Charleston, SC. It was just one of those things where we decided to head to the mountains late afternoon, no plan in sight. When we came to the mountainside campground we were immediately charmed. Still, we had only one day. So, we vowed to make it back to this perfect little campground, this time with marshmallows in tow. And that’s just what we did. This time it was mid day. The cool crisp air was met by the bright sun which seemed to make the yellow leaves brighter than usual. Winding mountain roads led us through sleepy mountain towns to the sound of our favorite music. It was a twelve hour drive from the 85 degree heat we left in Florida. The windows were down, the wind blew the dog’s hair back and I thought to myself,

www.thehotelguide.com

“We’ve arrived to our destination, fall” We made our way into the campground and met with the owner who patiently sits in the little check-in cabin at the front. This campground is very much like arriving to your favorite aunt’s house. Very laid back with the sense that you belong there. There were towering trees all boasting a different vibrant fall color. It’s uncanny how beautiful the brights reds, yellows and oranges look against a crystal clear blue sky. I could hear the leaves crunch beneath my feet as I approached our cabin, the ‘Locust Loft”. While it’s not the most inviting of names, it is by far, one of the most inviting cabins I’ve ever been to. The Locust Loft is just as it states, a loft. With nothing but a wooden ladder which leads you to a full sized bed. Below there’s a futon (for extra sleeping), a small bathroom with shower and a vanity. A back door leads you to a deck built around an old oak tree, and a tin roof lets you hear the chipmunks as they pass by with their winter bounty. One of my favorite parts about this cabin is the kitchen which is outdoors. Just in front of the little front porch and barn door the kitchen is built into a double door half-shed. No doubt this is a custom build, complete with sink, microwave and gas stove for all your cooking needs. The campsite is complete with a firepit and picnic table. It’s literally your own perfect little slice of fall. For kids there’s a small park with basketball, tetherball, and various yard games leaving you plenty to do in the afternoons after you’ve spent the day exploring the Blue Ridge Mountain Region. Things to do in Linville Falls, NC Don’t let looks deceive you. There’s plenty to do in Linville Falls which will easily keep you busy all day long. Here are some favorites of mine which have 39

Experiences

served me well over the years: Grandfather Mountain – This state park opens the mountain’s 2,456-acre backcountry to spectacular hiking and backpacking. Home to the mile-high swinging bridge, its terrain is a site and reminds me of the Rockies. Linville Falls – The most popular waterfall in the Blue Ridge Mountains just off the Blue Ridge Parkway. It is a spectacular three-tiered waterfall plunging into Linville Gorge, the “Grand Canyon of the Southern Appalachians.” The Gorge is the largest in the Eastern United States. Linville Caverns – Courteous and experienced guides take you into the subterranean world, giving you the history of the caverns and allowing you to view the grand work of nature. Whether you are in need of a city-break away or you just want to get refreshed with the vibrant colors of fall, Linville Falls, NC and the Linville Falls Campground

is a perfect way to spend a few days in October. Tips: Booking in October can fill up quick for the cabins. They are equip for RVs too. It is advised that you book in advance as this is a very popular time of year in the North Carolina Mountains. Weather can be in the 40’s at night at 60’s during the day so plan for light layers and good hiking shoes. You can bring your own food so a trip to the market may be ideal for you. You can get data on your phone at the Locust Loft by the campfire but service is hit or miss. Maybe bring a game of Yahtzee or a deck of cards for campfire nights. For more information about Linville Falls, NC go here. Special thanks goes to Jim and Dot of Linville Falls Trailer Lodge and Campground. While they sponsored our visit, it in no way shapes my opinion of this trip. I sought them out after having such a wonderful experience the first time.
