The first of its kind in Texas, the conference brought industry experts from around the globe to San Antonio to educate and collaborate about mixology and craft cocktail culture. The inaugural and second annual San Antonio Cocktail Conference have brought tremendous publicity and attention to the Alamo City, while raising funds for HeartGift San Antonio, a nonprofit organization that provides life-saving heart surgery to children from countries where the care they need is either unavailable or inaccessible. Mansion at Judge’s Hill Elegance in the Texas Capital

T

he Mansion at Judges’ Hill has a history as storied as the city it dwells in. Originally built in 1900, the Mansion was a wedding gift to Goodall & Ella Wooten by Thomas Dudley Wooten, one of the founders of the University of Texas. Tea Ceremony Each year, The Kitano hosts an annual traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony in rooms with traditional Japanese décor and an authentic setting with tatami mats and shoji screens. Washlets Moreover, The Kitano is the first in the city to fully outfit all of their 149 guestrooms with a Washlet S300. The Washlet S300 by Toto is not only high tech, but it is also the preferred Japanese toilet of choice, providing an unparalleled cleansing experience. While Washlets are commonplace in Japan, they are often considered indulgences inthe US and now all Kitano guests are spoiled with the Washlet’s comfort and promise of maximum cleanliness. his August and September, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum will offer four evenings of member-exclusive Quiet Views of James Turrell’s major new sitespecific work Aten Reign (2013), which reimagines the rotunda of Frank Lloyd Wright’s iconic building as one of Turrell’s luminous and immersive Skyspaces. “Quiet Views” The events—taking place on August 12, August 19, September 9, and September 23—offer members an additional opportunity to experience Aten Reign in an intimate and meditative environment, with only sixty people present at each hour-long sitting. Two sittings will take place on each of the four evenings, the first starting at 7:30 pm and the second at 9 pm. “State of Contemplation” One of the largest installations the artist has mounted and the result of nearly six years of planning, Aten Reign materializes the light and the air that fill the expanse of the Guggenheim rotunda. For the first time, the rotunda can be experienced only from below—not as an open void to be looked across, but as a mass of vibrant color that expands and contracts above the heads of visitors. The work promotes a state of contemplation in a communal viewing space, rekindling the museum’s founding identity as a “temple of spirit,” in the words of Hilla Rebay, the Guggenheim’s first director and a pioneer in the promotion of nonobjective art.

Travelers seeking a respite from the stresses of everyday life will find their perfect escape in the Cook Islands. Nestled in between Tahiti and Fiji at the heart of the South Pacific, the Cook Islands are made up of 15 small islands, home to approximately 15,000 people of Polynesian descent who enjoy a relaxed pace of life. Memorable Greetings Passengers are greeted upon their arrival to the capital island of Rarotonga by Papa Jake, who can be found at the airport during every incoming and outgoing flight serenading travelers with songs on his ukulele. Once luggage has been collected, it is a breeze to find the next destination: there is only one road around the entire island of Rarotonga, which is approximately 19 miles (32 km) in circumference, and no traffic lights, making the island easily navigable. Plenty of Accommodations There are a number of accommodation options available in the Cook Islands, from boutique and luxury resorts to intimate self-catering villas, and there are no chain hotels (or chain restaurants for that matter) on these islands. Tons to Do Rarotonga is the hub of it all; here, visitors can explore the interior of the island through trekking or hopping on a safari tour, take to the ocean to snorkel, dive, paddleboard and kite surf, participate in a traditional “Island Night” show, stop off at one of the numerous cafes/restaurants for a bite, and visit the local Saturday market in town, among www.thehotelguide.com

other activities. Of course, taking to one of the beautiful beaches for a day is a favorite activity for many, as all beaches are local access in the Cook Islands. Aitutaki Aitutaki is the second most visited island in the country, and is known for its amazingly blue lagoon and white sandy beaches. Taking a lagoon cruise here for the day is not to be missed. For travelers who desire a vacation that is even more off the beaten path, the smaller outer islands of Atiu, Mangaia and Mitiaro are great for bird watching, trekking and cave exploring, respectively. Easy Plane Ride The Cook Islands are on the eastern side of the date line, and so are in the same time zone as Hawaii. It’s easy to get to the destination via the 9 1/2 hour once a week, non-stop flight from Los Angeles, California into Rarotonga. While the local language is Maori, everyone speaks English as well, and the currency of the Cook Islands is the New Zealand Dollar, making it a value destination for many travelers. After one visit to these gorgeous and intimate islands, travelers will truly feel that they have found the secluded paradise that they have been after. 37

The people, the architecture, the old time feeling you get when hearing the trolleys roll by, the food…. Oh My! The FOOD! There is NO WAY your tummy won’t get satisfied! The following is a list of Must Visit Places, some NEW spots I got to enjoy, and some I would SKIP. I hope this is helpful to you when planning your next visit to the Crescent City. Must Visit: - Bourbon House: Although it’s mostly fine dining, they offer a great Oyster Bar for their hot travelers just looking to cool down. While they shuck the massive Gulf Coast Oysters, we order a Bourbon Milk Punch. If you’ve never had one, have one! To me, it’s what Christmas should taste like. - Café du Monde: World famous for its cafe’ au lait, fluffy beignets, and the opportunity to people watch. Make sure you bring cash and wear clothing you don’t mind being covered in powdered sugar. - Lucky Dogs: Although they are scattered along most of Bourbon Street, I keep to my spot inside of Harrah’s Casino. Somehow it just seems less … scary to eat? Just make sure you order it with EVERYTHING

on it. Go Hard or Go Home, right? I take mine and sit at the bar right behind the hot dog stand, where I play $5 worth of video poker and get COMP drinks. Just a TIP from me to you … bet low and don’t forget to TIP the bartender who serves your FREE drinks. - Brother’s Fried Chicken: one block from the hustle and bustle of Canal Street, on the corner of Commons Street and Carondelet Street, sits this Food/Liquor Mart where you will find the most amazing Friend Chicken in the World! OK, not sure if that’s 100% accurate; BUT trust me when I say that I’ve never taken someone there and they not agree with my previous statement. It’s pretty EPIC Fried Chicken. OH, yeah… and it’s open 24 HOURS! You’re welcome! - Bourbon Orleans Hotel: for your mid-afternoon Bloody Mary fix … Old School Drinks can be found and enjoyed in this historical hotel’s bar. The bartender will tell you of his 45+ years of patrons, tourists, and natural disasters that hit that fun filled street. continued on next page 39

- Pat O’Briens: The Original. Get the Hurricane at the Piano Bar. Get there early enough for a seat, though. It fills up quickly. Don’t have two Hurricanes. You’ll forget everything you’ve done before your first. TRY to Visit: - August Restaurant: John Besh’s Fine Dining Restaurant’s cuisine is Contemporary French, yet it focuses on LOCAL ingredients and infuses Besh’s Southern Louisiana roots. Located inside a 19th Century FrenchCreole building in NoLa’s Central Business District, this place will surely take your breath away with large crystal chandeliers and soaring columns. Of course, there is much more to this place that décor! I went with a large group and together we had most of the dinner menu (including dessert!). The vote was unanimous with happy tummies: you can’t go wrong with ANY of their options. - Cafe Atchafalaya: off the beaten path, where most tourists are fighting over last minute dinner reservations, look for this great little gem down Louisiana Avenue. I hear Brunch here is amazing as well, but dinner was divine. I highly recommend. - Columns Hotel: take the trolley down to the Garden District and visit a little piece of history. I don’t want to spoil it for you, but you’re gonna love the drinks at this old fashioned bar. Locals love this spot… and so do celebrities. So bring your camera with you. - Jack Dempsey’s Restaurant & Bar: this is one of those places that my local’s beg me not to skip. You might as well skip breakfast and dinner, ‘cause this lunch

will keep you full ALL DAY. TRY to Avoid: - Anything Franchised/ Corporate: you’re in one of the most amazing culinary cities in the nation! Why are you at a restaurant you have back at home? You seriously waited 15 minutes for a double cheeseburger at fast food franchise burger place because you wanted something quick? Bad Tourist! Bad! Support Local Restaurants… ask your Hotel’s Valet for their local recommendations. They know of some of the best kept secrets. - Jackson Square on Sunday: never short of pick-pockets and fake non-profit organization swindlers, this is not the best place to try to find a good place to eat. Find something closer to the Business District, where you can walk off what you just ate and not worry about being haggled for loose change. - Lucky Dogs on Bourbon Street: again, bare with me … I don’t recommend eating them outside of Harrah’s. Sometimes I just need to remind people about that. Street food here is sketchy. I would also like to recommend something non-culinary when visiting NoLa. Although I usually stay on Canal Street or in the French Quarter, I really appreciated staying somewhere new this time around. The newlyrenovated Hyatt Regency on Loyola in the heart of Downtown New Orleans was such a treat to visit and stay at. Walking distance from everything you can imagine or just a trolley skip away from the Garden District. This grand hotel offers some of the most breathtaking views of the city. The hotel is full of great restaurants, bars, and the ambience of live jazz music throughout the evening. The staff is helpful, knowledgeable, and extremely kind. I can’t wait to stay there again.
