SeaWorld San Antonio unveils Wave Breaker™: The Rescue Coaster Wildlife enthusiasts can see if they have what it takes to race into action with SeaWorld’s animal rescue team on Wave Breaker™, a one-of-a kind coaster inspired by the award-winning Sea Rescue® program. Hailed as an oasis where nature, science and culture meet, the Witte Museum just unveiled $100 million in renovations. One of the most notable additions is the new Naylor Family Dinosaur Gallery. Adventurers can follow the large carnivorous Acrocanthosaurus as it leaves tracks along ancient Texas shorelines; explore predator and prey as a mosasaur hunts for dinner in the ancient seas; and behold the massive skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus rex. In the new Dino Lab, Witte guests will discover what fossils uncover about the era when dinosaurs roamed Texas, compare the jaws and teeth of meat eaters with those of plant eaters, learn what ancient footprints say about dinosaur behavior and examine links between dinosaurs and modern-day birds. This is just a sampling of the new experiences in San Antonio. There’s more to discover. While in town, travelers can stop by the Visitor Information Center across from The Alamo to grab a map, get more ideas on what to explore and have San Antonio questions answered. Buckhorn Museum A San Antonio Gem

he Buckhorn Museum features wildlife from all over the world; including fish from the seven seas, animals from every continent and strange animal oddities which have been collected for over 100 years! Our exhibit halls are comprised of over 520 species of wildlife—many of which are record holders. Prize-Winning The Buckhorn’s most prized record holder is the famous ‘78 Point Buck’. This impressive rack was sold to the saloon owner himself, Albert Friedrich, for a mere $100 dollars back in 1890. Other amazing specimens include a record 1,056 pound black marlin and a 10,000 year old prehistoric Irish elk. History In 1881, seventeenyear-old Albert Friedrich, a bartender and bellhop at San Antonio’s Southern Hotel on Main Plaza, decided to open his own saloon across the street. Little did Friedrich know, over 130 years later his Buckhorn Saloon and Museum would be one of San Antonio’s top attractions and continue to entertain tourists from all over the world. Shortly after opening The Buckhorn Saloon, Albert learned that many folks traveling off the ol’ dusty trail didn’t have much money in their pockets. Albert had the brilliant idea to accept horns and antlers in exchange for a free beer or whiskey from his saloon. From then on, The Buckhorn collection grew to become one of the world’s most unique and largest collections of horns and antlers. The impressive horn and antler collection lined every wall and ceiling, which is why it is known as the Buckhorn Hall of Horns. In 1922, the first year of Prohibition in the United

States, the Buckhorn made its first move to the corner of Houston and South Flores Streets. Many saloons, unable to serve alcoholic beverages, closed their doors, but Friedrich used his collection and his creativity to keep the Buckhorn afloat. In 1956, the Lone Star Brewery of San Antonio purchased The Buckhorn and built a facility to house the original bar and collection that would serve as their hospitality and sampling room. The collection continued to grow and the Buckhorn persevered as one of San Antonio’s most popular tourist attractions. In 1996 Stroh’s Brewing Company, decided to divest itself of the historical collection. The future of the Buckhorn looked bleak until Mary Friedrich Rogers, granddaughter of Albert Friedrich, and her husband, Wallace committed to preserving this important part of San Antonio history, stepped forward to purchase the collection. While the Buckhorn continued to entertain more than 150,000 visitors a year at its former location, the new owners felt that a more central downtown location would be advantageous. In 2006, The Buckhorn Saloon and Museum expanded again when an additional museum, The Texas Ranger Museum was added onto the attraction. The Texas Ranger Museum features hundreds of authentic Texas Ranger artifacts including automatic handguns, shotguns, badges and more. The museum also features a recreation of San Antonio at the turn of the century in Ranger Town. The town includes a replica Buckhorn Saloon, a jail cell, blacksmith and a replica of the 1934 Ford V8 Deluxe—the famous Bonnie & Clyde getaway car. Arlington, Texas

t’s never too early or too late to plan a knockyour-socks-off summer vacation or staycation, but where should you go? Isn’t it obvious? Arlington’s fun and affordable options will keep you and your family busy until the school bell rings next fall. Check it out: One: Six Flags Over Texas: Things are bigger and more exciting than ever at Six Flags Over Texas, one of the world’s premiere amusement parks and a Texas summer tradition for more than 50 years. In addition to classic attractions like the Chaparral Antique Motor Cars, the Log Ride and the Shockwave, there are a few new additions to the Six Flags family that are just dying to have you come ride them: Check out the Galactic Attack Virtual Reality Coaster , a one-of-a-kind “mixed reality” experience that will blow your mind; and The Joker, a 12-story, move-in-any-direction, flip-youupside-down, gravity-defying thrill coaster that just has to be experienced to be believed. Get a Six Flags season pass. Two: Texas Rangers Baseball: Who has #LoneStarGrit? The Texas Rangers, that’s who! Claim your share of the action with tons of great ticket options, covering everything from “on a budget” to

“livin’large. Don’t overlook these opportunities to upgrade your next Texas Rangers visit: enjoying the game amidst the opulence of a Texas Rangers luxury suite, taking in a behind-the-scenes tour of Globe Life Park, or signing up for a once-in-a-lifetime Texas Rangers in-game fan experience. Three: Six Flags Hurricane Harbor: Three million gallons of cool water on a hot summer day? Yes, please! Do some serious chillin’ on the Boogie Beach or Lazy River—but only after you’ve rocked a few of the watery thrill rides— like the Wahoo Racer, a two-tiered water slide that’s the largest in the world, or the Tsunami Surge, a 68-foot, highspeed enclosed tunnel ride that culminates in quick ride on a 40-foot wall of water. Get ready to make some waves! Four: AT&T Stadium: The Cowboys aren’t back home until August, but there’s still plenty of fun and excitement to be had at AT&T Stadium, one of the world’s top sporting and event venues. Coming this summer: Metallica: The Worldwired Tour,(June 16), and Justin Bieber: The Purpose Tour (July 29). While you’re in town, be sure and grab a ticket for a behind-the-scenes tour of AT&T Stadium or make plans to enjoy a meal or a cocktail at the Stadium

Club, the stadium’s new on-site dining facility. Five: Get crafty: Much to everyone’s surprise, the Dallas Observer recently reported on something that Arlington insiders have known for a while: the land of baseball and roller coasters is quickly becoming something of a beer lover’s destination, too. If you can’t get enough of that good brown stuff, or you’ve always wanted to learn more about craft brews, get the lowdown on which Arlington brewpubs to add to your summer agenda right here. Six: Shop ‘till you drop: And dine until you’re feeling fine, baby, because we’ve got plenty of opportunities in Arlington to indulge in a little retail therapy that’s topped off with a great meal, adult bevvie or blockbuster movie: Check out The Arlington Highlands (also home to Dave & Buster’s and Studio Movie Grill); The Parks at Arlington (where you can take in a blockbuster at AMC or a turn around the rink at The Ice At The Parks); or Lincoln Square (an upscale shopping and dining destination conveniently located in the Entertainment District). If bargain hunting’s your thing, be sure and visit Traders Village or the Grand Prairie Premium Outlets. Seven: Visit Downtown Arlington: Enjoy some of J. Gilligan’s world-famous Irish Nachos or equally-famous fried chicken and home-style sides at Babe’s; take in a Dallas Wings basketball game; or visit the UT Arlington campus. (And if you do, be sure to include The Planetarium at UT Arlington, the UT Arlington Bookstore and The Gallery at UTA). Eight: Have some fun in the sun: Don’t let the Texas summer stop you from enjoying the outdoors, as there are plenty of opportunities for early morning, tree-shaded, and watery fun all summer long. Worth investigating: the award-winning Tierra Verde Golf Club (the world’s first Audubon Signature Sanctuary municipal golf course); Lake Arlington (where you can paddle, fish or ski); or the Southwest Nature Preserve (home to native plant commuwww.thehotelguide.com

TEXAS nities, walking trails and stunning views.) Nine: Artfully awesome: This summer, we swirl creativity and entertainment as several amazing art festivals converge on the American Dream City. Be swept into visual excellence as the renowned International Folk Art Market from Santa Fe makes its debut at University of Texas at Arlington, June 16-17. The lush Richard Greene Linear Park, located between Globe Life Park and AT&T Stadium, becomes the backdrop for Art on the Greene, May 26-28. This art lover’s paradise boasts lots of food, live entertainment and fun for all. Ten: Free concerts: Free live music under the stars in the heart of Downtown Arlington is one of the best things to love about summer in Arlington—plus, you can pack a picnic basket and BYO anything you like to the show, or visit a Downtown Arlington pub or restaurant before or afterwards. Take a look at the Levitt Pavilion website (or download the app) to plan your visit, as well as the 2017 concert schedule to find out which acts you can look forward to. Eleven: Outof-the-ordinary museums: Roll on over to the International Bowling Museum to explore the origins and the future of the ancient sport of bowling (and maybe pick up a customized bowling trinket for yourself); the Living Science Center, a kid-friendly destination (located in River Legacy), is all about love for our environment and the critters we share it with; or enjoy the Milton H. Greene: Women photography exhibit at the Arlington Museum of Art. Greene’s many remarkable subjects include Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Frank Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly, Sammy Davis Jr., Paul Newman, and more, May 13-August 6. Awesome Insights

Healthy Travel Tips

by: Sloane Davis rying to stay fit and healthy can be challenging when traveling. I always tell my clients that the goal should be to maintain, not gain while away. And while I am an advocate for living life and enjoying all that is has to offer, going on vacation shouldn’t become a free for all to throw in the towel when it comes to health and fitness.

T

A common question I receive from many prospective clients is “I am going on vacation soon. Should I wait to start the plan or start right away?” My answer is always this: There is never a “good” or “easy” time to start. You have to learn to live a healthy lifestyle which is what my plans aim to do. In other words, start the plan today. That way, when it does come time for vacation, you have the tools you need to maintain, not gain. While you won’t track every food that goes into your mouth on vacation, subconsciously you are much more aware of how your meals should look and be balanced if you are following a plan prior to vacation. I can’t tell you how many clients come back to have not gained an ounce. THAT is WINNING! Here are some tips to help you stay fit and healthy when traveling: Drink a lot of water – Lots of walking, hours spent outside in the sun… traveling can be exhausting. The airplane ride alone will dehydrate you from the altitude. I love to take a reusable water bottle and fill it up after I pass through security to take on the plane with me. This ensures that I am drinking throughout the flight and don’t have to wait for the flight attendants to serve me. And when they do come to serve, take it! Drink all the water you can. You will feel so much better getting off the plane hydrated instead of tired, and drained.

When you get to your destination, continue to drink water. Incorporate foods that also contain a lot of water such as lettuce, watermelon and cucumbers. Stick to your normal routine as much as possible: Just because you are away doesn’t mean you have to throw in the towel and eat everything in sight. This goes especially for all inclusive resorts or a buffet. Just because you pay for something doesn’t mean you have to overdo it. Breakfast included in the hotel? Stick to an omelette, a piece of toast or oatmeal, some fresh fruit and one “treat.” You don’t need muffins, bacon, hash browns, pancakes AND french toast if you normally don’t eat that at home. That’s just being a glutton. Pick one savory food and enjoy it. Tomorrow is a new day and a few hours later you will be eating your next meal again. Keep things in moderation: You don’t have to have everything in one day. Bread, alcohol, dessert all add up at one meal. All 3 along with your meal could mean your total daily allowance of calories or more. So pick one, and choose another the following day. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing Try to keep active: If you normally workout daily then try to go to the gym half the amount of days you are on vacation. Vacation is just that…a break, so don’t feel like you have to hit the gym at 7am each morning to feel good about yourself. Let go of some of the stress. Go for a walk, enjoy the outdoors and do something entirely different then you are used to. Designed to frame the picturesque landscape, the intimate property features private accommodations

and premium amenities. Over 200-miles of hiking trails, an open-air kitchen and great room, certified organic farm, Buddha Barn yoga and meditation room, Romper Room gym, outdoor pool and spa, and private treatment rooms for massages, further enhance the spectacular surroundings. Because The Ranch does not have cell phone reception and limited (in-room only) WIFI capabilities, the setting encourages guests to focus on being present in the serene environment with others on the same path of health and wellness.

Affordable Healthcare

Hello Alvin

obody plans on getting strep throat or twisting their ankle while on vacation or traveling for work. But when it happens, you can use your iPhone, Android or any mobile device to access a physician, get medical advice or, if needed, a prescription.

N

It’s called telehealth, the delivery of healthcare via phone, tablet or computer, and it has the potential to save every consumer – and our nation’s healthcare system, including employers -- substantial amounts of time and money. Telehealth makes it possible for everyone to access quality, affordable care: • Individuals with limited benefits or little-to-no insurance coverage • Travelers who are on-the-road for business or recreation and need medical attention for non-emergent illnesses • People who forget to pack their prescription medications – or simply run out of Rx products

Cost-Effective, Convenient

The fastest-growing segment of services in telehealth are those connecting consumers with clinicians 24/7. Typically, these are for nonemergency issues such as colds, flu, earaches and skin rashes, and they cost around $45 per consultation, compared with approximately $100 at a doctor’s office, $160 at an urgent-care clinic or $750+ at an emergency room. Some direct-to-consumer services enable users to connect 24/7 via phone or video with a boardcertified physician who can either prescribe medication or provide advice on what to do. They also offer nurse advice lines to provide answers to medical questions day or night, and the ability to email a specialist to get a quick response from a physician, dentist, pharmacist or other healthcare specialist. The popularity of telehealth comes on the heels of a trend in which employers are moving away from fully-insured health plans toward self-insurance,

as well as the rise of consumer-driven health plans or high-deductible plans that shift more of the costburden and decision-making responsibility onto the employees and their families. Bottom line: Telehealth makes it possible for everyone to drastically reduce out-of-pocket medical expenses.

Saves Time, Increases Productivity

Scheduling a doctor visit requires time off from work, dealing with unpredictable medical bills, and long wait times. For many, it can take an average of 24 days to schedule an appointment with a doctor, and can mean waiting for at least an hour to see the doctor. With the growing doctor shortage, fueled by aging baby boomers and population growth, this situation is likely to get worse. By providing access to medical advice more quickly than traditional office visits, telehealth can prevent individuals from needing care or getting sicker than necessary, and can also minimize lost productivity costs.

Finding the Right Telehealth Service

Employers and consumers should look for a direct-to-consumer healthcare service that offers comphrehensive, nationwide telehealth connectivy at a low annual rate that covers the entire family. The service should rely on the highest quality physicians and use a large number of guidelines developed specifically for delivering care remotely, including a five-point scale for determining whether a sore throat, for example, is likely due to streptococcus infection that warrants antibiotics. By increasing access to physicians and specialists, telehealth can help ensure that patients receive the right care, at the right place, at the right time. A Unique Getaway

Campeche

on’t miss out. If you’ve got the time, Campeche – the Mexican state on the Yucatán Peninsula overlooking the Gulf of Mexico –offers endless opportunities and off-the-beatenpath explorations for tourists with a few days to spend. Still relatively unexplored by North American tourists, the region brims with a broad range of options, including two UNESCO heritage sites, white sandy beaches, 16 Mayan ruins, mangrove forests, the historic Spanish fort and cobblestone colonial streets lined with traditional shops, romantic restaurants and nightlife.

D

Capital City Campeche Celebrates 500th Anniversary

This is also a special year for one of the region’s strongest draws, the walled city of San Francisco de Campeche, Mexico’s only fortified city, where the Spanish first landed in 1517 – 500 years ago. Located on the Bay of Campeche, visitors can explore the city walls and fortifications built to protect it from pirates or walk its romantic historic old town, once one of New Spain’s most important ports, designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. Attractions include Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, a baroque cathedral with neoclassical features, the impressive colonial Carvajal Mansion with its massive Carrara marble staircase, the Xmuch’haltun botanical garden with over 200 species of subtropical plants, and archaeological, architectural, cultural and naval museums. Gastronomy aficionados can experience a mix of Mayan, Spanish and Caribbean flavors that create a unique and gourmet dining offering in the city’s cafes and restaurants.

Festivals and Celebrations

An extended stay allows visitors to see sites while enjoying seasonal events and festivals. Spring offers the city’s International Jazz Festival, when musicians from across the globe play in venues throughout town. Day of the Dead in late October and early November mixes ancient and modern macabre traditions. Visitors and locals alike revel in free musical and cultural offerings during November and December’s Historic Quarter Festival. In February and March the streets of Campeche flow with feathers, sequins and color during Mexico’s oldest Carnival.

Year-Round Natural Attractions

Home to 16 Mayan cities, Campeche offers opportunities for discovery and exploration, including Edzna, the region’s most important archaeological site. First settled around 600 BC and located in the state’s northern region, this fascinating Mayan city flourished during the Classic period and was once home to as many as 25,000 Maya. More than 40% of Campeche is in a protected, natural state, providing a unique opportunity for nature lovers including one of the largest protected areas in all of Mexico, the 723,000 hectare Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, a stunning mixed natural and cultural UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Laguna de Términos is also a major draw for bird watching and dolphin sightings. To learn more about Campeche please visit www.visitmexico.com/en/campeche.

ewes offers something for everyone— a view of history, the tranquility of its parks and beaches, fishing on the bay or the ocean, a leisurely walking tour offering a myriad of architectural styles, shopping in the quaint and unique retail stores, eating in the numerous fine dining establishments or simply enjoying the relaxing quality of life that Lewes residents and visitors revere. Lewes is ideally situated for anyone who loves the water because it’s located where the Delaware Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean (Cape Henlopen) — providing both bay and ocean beaches for swimming. The LewesRehoboth Canal, which winds past the commercial district, allows for easy access to either the bay or the ocean for anglers. Docking facilities for pleasure boats are conveniently located within

walking distance of the nearby restaurants, shops and lodging facilities. Commercial “head boats,” charter boats and a nearby boat launching ramp are also available. Delaware’s Tall Ship, the Kalmar Nyckel, visits Lewes in the summer at the Cape May-Lewes Ferry Terminal for public tours and sails. One of the few remaining lightships,

Two of the many lighthouses that have guided mariners on the Delaware Bay for over 250 years can be seen from the Lewes Beach parking lot with descriptive signage on the grounds of the Lewes Ferry terminal. For those who prefer to get in touch with Delaware’s abundant natural resources, one of Lewes’ greatest assets is its proximity to Cape Henlopen State Park. The park area

DE encompasses more than 5,000 acres of natural beauty including spectacular bay and ocean vistas, a unique saltwater lagoon (Gordons Pond), and the Great Dune which rises 80 feet above sea level. There are two trails in the park, the Gordons Pond and the Junction Breakwater trails, that combined offer a 16 mile loop connecting Lewes to Rehoboth Beach, another beach town five miles south of Lewes. In addition to the recreational opportunities for visitors and residents, Lewes has many homes and buildings of historical and architectural significance. Within a half-mile of the commercial district on Second Street, you can see numerous restored homes dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. One 17th century home is documented to be the oldest standing building in Lewes as well as in Delaware. The Lewes Historical Society established and maintains a campus of historic homes moved from their original locations and restored. The buildings are open to the public for tours beginning in late spring through early fall. The Society also administers two other sites of historical interest -- the Cannonball House Maritime Museum and the Ryves Holt House, c.1665, the oldest house in Delaware known to be standing on its present site. In July 2017 the society is opening a third site, the Lewes History Museum, housed in the newly renovated Margaret H. Rollins Community Center. There is so much to do in Lewes that one day will not suffice. 35

Carrolton Neighborhood/Oak Street

A streetcar ride to historic Oak Street in Uptown New Orleans’ Carrolton neighborhood – a burgeoning culinary and entertainment destination. Home to NOLA music institution Maple Leaf and award-winning Jacque-Imo’s restaurant, the Oak Street corridor is at once a neighborhood community and a tourism destination. The opening of several new markets, eateries and bars are evidence of a resurgence of this district. At the recently-opened DTB (which stands for Down The Bayou), Commander’s Palace alum Chef/ Owner Carl Schaubhut delivers modern interpretations of Southern Louisiana’s coastal cuisine, recreating the region’s antiquated dishes with refined technique and a lighter, more creative twist. Diners can expect culinary delights such as Crawfish Fry Bread with green chili fonduta; Mushroom Boudin Balls – which just happen to be vegan; and Cacio e Pepe – a Cajun play on the Italian classic with house made cayenne spaghetti, tossed in crabfat

butter and garnished with trout roe. Cocktails, created by award-winning libations maven Lu Brow, complement the Chef’s savory menu and focus on creative concoctions using Louisiana ingredients. The Fire on the Bayou features Baton Rouge-based Magnolia vodka, Lillet and house made pepper jelly, served as a ‘shot’ alongside a pony beer to lessen the heat. Next door to DTB is Simone’s Market which opened in late 2016 and offers locally and regionally sourced produce, meats and an array of prepared foods. Jump across the street to Oak Wine Bar and Ale on Oak craft beer bar, both owned by New Orleanian Katie Winters. With a menu crafted by Chef Aaron Burgau of Patois and live music throughout the week, there’s something for everyone at these sister hotspots. Other must-visit spots on Oak Street include Cowbell, Jacque-Imo’s and late night music haunt the Maple Leaf.

Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard/Central City Once a thriving mecca for New Orleans’ Jewish and African-American communities, Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard (OCH), formerly known as Dryades Street, is now becoming a beacon for food culture, history, and commerce. First stop for any foodie is the Southern Food & Beverage Museum (SoFAB)/Museum of the American Cocktail (MOTAC) – a non-profit shrine to the food, drink & culture of the South. SoFAB examines and celebrates all the cultures that have come together through the centuries to create the South’s unique

culinary heritage. SoFAB also hosts special exhibits, demonstrations, lectures and tastings that showcase this heritage. On Mondays and Thursdays, guests can also attend an interactive lunch demonstrations in the Museum’s state-of-the-art Rouses Culinary Innovation Center. Step out of SoFAB and visit the John & Bonnie Boyd Hospitality & Culinary Library, certain to keep any foodie enthralled for hours. This culinary branch of the New Orleans Public Library is the largest such library in the United States not connected with a culinary school or food corporation. This niche collection contains an astounding 17,000 cookbooks, ranging from those wonderful community cookbooks with plastic bindings to best-sellers from professional chefs and food writers. Chef Paul Prudhomme willed his entire collection to the library, and here you’ll find papers from Southern food pioneer Louis Osteen. After getting your culinary culture on, walk across the street to Dryades Public Market. Just opened last year, this unique affordable marketplace is a modern version of Dryades Market which in 1849, served as the city’s public market. Butchers, food stalls and fresh produce make any foodie drool. OCH is also home to some incredible dining spots including Adolfo Garcia’s Primitivo; Mexican hotspot Casa Borrega and Roux Carré – a multi ethnic collection of food stalls with multiple vendors spanning an array of cuisines.

Lower Decatur/Lower French Quarter

Past Bourbon Street and the French Market deep into the bottom of the French Quarter, cocktail enthusiasts and discerning diners will find a multitude of options on Lower Decatur Street. When Neal Bodenheimer, owner of James Beard finalist Cure cocktail bar opened Cane & Table , he revitalized a corridor of the Lower French Quarter and made the area a destination for craft cocktail lovers. developer Hugh Uhalt recently transformed the former Maximo’s space with a $1 Million dollar makeover into Trinity which has been touted as one of the city’s best restaurants by Conde Nast Traveler and Opentable. With a varied menu that pays tribute to the amalgamation of ethnicities that make up the very unique and easily recognizable flavor of New Orleans food culture, Isolani focuses on sourcing the best local products and using familiar ingredients to create unfamiliar dishes. Diners can expect bright, creative and adventurous dishes such as Crawfish and Fontina Beignets with tarragon aioli; Frog Leg Tempura with cilantro ponzu sauce; and Foie Gras Tourchon & Blood Sausage.

Warehouse District/Central Business District

No visit to New Orleans would be complete without dining in the Warehouse District and the CBD – a concentrated area of some of the most critically-acclaimed Chefs in the city. Since opening in June 2015 Compere Lapin , Chef Nina Compton’s beloved New Orleans restaurant in the Old No. 77 Hotel, has received critical acclaim including a rave review in The New York Times, Top 10 Winner of Playboy’s Best New Bars in America 2016 and “Best New Restaurant” nods by New Orleans Magazine and Times-Picayune. Hiking

5 Kid-Friendly Locales

by: Deborah Wall

ll around Las Vegas lie areas of breathtaking natural beauty, offering families with young children the easy opportunity to explore unspoiled wilderness without traveling great distances. To compose this list, I tapped the memories of three experts: my children, who spent much of their childhoods hiking Southwestern trails with me. These came up as the five places they most enjoyed when they were small. Badwater, Death Valley National Park, Calif. One of the most popular places in the park, this salt flat will have you walking on the lowest terrain in North America, 282 feet below sea level. It is easy walking on a flat surface, and in the cooler months can even be walked barefoot. A special treat: Imagine walking on snow, if the sun could warm that snow. Travel as far as you feel comfortable or until the terrain gets too bumpy to walk easily. The salt flat offers spectacular views of the 11,048 foot Telescope Peak to the west; this is one of the few places you can see such a disparity in elevation. Best done NovemberMarch. www.nps.gov/deva. Riverside Walk, Zion National Park, Utah. This paved and nearly level trail travels along the North Fork of the Virgin River, through a healthy riparian habitat of cottonwood, box elder, and velvet ash, surrounded by Zion’s signature red

A

and orange sandstone walls. Wildlife commonly seen includes deer, wild turkeys and rock squirrels. Highlights include short unpaved spur trails, allowing access to the river where your party can play in the water, picnic, or just relax. After one mile going upstream, the trail ends at the Gateway to the Narrows, the literal jumping-off point where adventuresome hikers drop into the waterway and head upstream using the river as the trail, into the world-famous and spectacular Narrows of the Virgin River. Good year-round, except note that the trail can ice up in winter. www.nps.gov/zion. China Ranch Date Farm, Tecopa, Calif. This date farm is a rare and lush oasis in the middle of the desert near Death Valley National Park. Hike the trails through the date trees or follow the outer trails that leave from there. One good starter trail is the 200-foot Creek Trail, which takes

38 www.thehotelguide.com

you through a canopy of riparian foliage along a flowing creek—super for small children. Another good one is the Badlands Trail, about one and onehalf mile roundtrip. Wrap your visit up by visiting the store, where you can sample the various kinds of dates and perhaps buy some of those you like the most. Nobody seems to leave (nor should they)

without buying one of the famous date milkshakes, handmade on the spot. www.chinaranch.com. Kelso Sand Dunes, Mojave National Preserve, CA. No official trail here, just a great place for all ages to climb as much as 700 feet to the dunes’ peak. Look for animal tracks in the sand, and perhaps get sandy by rolling back down. These are “booming” or “singing” dunes, which means they make a peculiar noise when the moisture is just right. Only a few dunes in the world do this. Some think the sound resembles a distant airplane motor, while others compare it to a musical note. All kids— and adults, too—love it. Our family tradition is to always fly kites here. www.nps.gov/moja. Black Canyon National Water Trail, Lake Mead National Recreations Area, Nev. & Ariz. This is usually done as a full-day kayaking or www.thehotelguide.com

US

canoe excursion, either guided or self-guided, embarking from the Nevada side of the Colorado River, just below Hoover Dam, and traveling almost 12 miles downstream to Willow Beach, Arizona. Parents will have to do most of the paddling, but there is a good downstream current with no white water. Foot trails beloved by children lead up the side canyons, some of them to hot springs, waterfalls, and sauna caves. There are several small beaches you will likely have to yourself, to stop and relax, have lunch, and of course swim in the chilly, yet refreshing, clear water. Bighorn sheep and bald eagles share the habitat with plenty of waterfowl. For this trip, even if you have your own watercraft, you will need to sign up with an authorized outfitter through the National Park Service, for transportation through the dam’s security zone down to the launching area. Sundays and Mondays offer the most enchanting solitude and silence, as on those days no motorized boats are allowed north of Willow Beach. www.nps.gov/lake. When hiking with children, always carry extra water, jackets and snacks. Keep the distances short and brush up on your geologic and animal information so you can comment on what they see as they walk along. Family hikes can foster self-reliance and an appreciation for the natural wonders found just beyond the city lights. Deborah Wall lives in Las Vegas and has spent her life enjoying all forms of outdoor sports including hiking, sailing, canyoneering, rappelling, kayaking and winter camping. Her newest book, Base Camp Las Vegas: 101 Hikes in the Southwest, is available for pre-order on Amazon and will be released everywhere on August 8, 2017. 39

French Quarter Treasure

The Bourbon Orleans

Experiences

by: Marie Hernandez, www.SeriouslyTravel.com

ew Orleans has quickly become one of my favorite cities. The city’s charm and great food draws me back over and over. During my last trip, I chose to stay with The Bourbon Orleans Hotel a hotel of the New Orleans Hotel Collection. It’s an elegant and historic luxury hotel with a staff and service that makes you feel like you’re among friends. Located in the French Quarter, the boutique hotel is a charming place that has an alluring past. From the minute I walked in I knew my stay would be ideal. Met at the curb by a kind and humorous staff, I was quickly led through check-in and right to my gorgeous room. With several room types to choose from, I chose a King room overlooking the beautiful pool courtyard. The unique slatted, half moon windows gave the room a wonderful aura. The luxurious bed made my nights unbelievably comfortable and hard to get out of in the morning! I’m a firm believer that the service a hotel offers can make or break a visitor’s experience regardless of how beautiful the accommodations are. The Bourbon Orleans excels far beyond expectations. Each member of the staff was eager to go out of their way to make sure my stay was perfect. From the front desk to the chambermaids, everyone met me with a smile and made sure I had all I needed for a perfect stay. The hotel boasts a really great bar called Bourbon O with live music on certain nights and a great staff that will keep you enthralled with local ghost stories and spot on advice for places to get Olean’s famous eats.

N

www.thehotelguide.com

The pool area with deck chairs, umbrellas, and towel service is inviting. It’s a comfortable place to spend a hot day or sit in the evening with a drink or chit chat with friends. The Hotel offers its guests free Wi-Fi and an outstanding onsite restaurant, Roux on Orleans, where you’ll find a great breakfast to start your day, great choices for lunch, dinner, or a late night snack in your room. Definitely try their Southern Pulled Pork Sandwich….to die for!!! The Bourbon Orleans is located close to some of New Orleans great sites. A short walk to Café du Monde is a must and is literally a couple of blocks away. As is the famous Cathedral, great tour companies, and eateries. The hotel is also a beautiful site for a wedding as it’s elegant and newly restored interior makes for a gorgeous setting and pictures. I would highly recommend the Bourbon Orleans when visiting New Orleans; it’s a perfect home base while exploring the French Quarter, getting away for a romantic evening, or enjoying a girl’s get-a-way.
