LE MONASTERE DES AUGUSTINES a unique wellness adventure T

o understand the uniqueness of Le Monastère des Augustines, we must go back 386 years. Founded in 1639 by three Augustinian Nuns, this Monastery Hospital was the first on the continent north of Mexico, laying the foundations for our current healthcare system. Historical Significance These women were hospital owners, nurses, pharmacists and entrepreneurs. Faced with their community’s decline, the Augustinian Sisters began a 20-years reflection process to entrust the public with safeguarding their heritage. Completely restored, Le Monastère des Augustines reopened in 2015 as a secular and modern haven of culture and wellness, where healing bodies & souls has always been the mission. A “Nurturing Sanctuary” There is something very special about the spirit of the place. Many visitors refer to it as a nurtuing sanctuary. Perhaps it is the compassion and the care that makes them

feel in a safe space and allows them to slowly let go and to let us take care of them with love and tenderness. Holistic Health Approach The guest’s journey at Le Monastère is inspired by the way the the Augustinians lived their lives through action and contemplation. What we offer is based on holistic health principals where the healing focuses on the body, the mind, the emotional and spiritual pillars. We believe that when those four pillars are strong and stable you can live a healthy life. Every guest lives a unique experience as we personalize the wellness packages to respect the needs of every individual. It all begins with a call from our staff prior to their visit to plan their stay. True Connection... We offer all visitors several ways to connect with the Augustinian heritage: experiential accommodation, a museum, archive centre, a program of activities around holistic health and culture, a mindful & healthy cuisine and spa treatments.

“A State of Calm” At Le Monastère, we favor a state of calm and slowness where we invite guests to savor silence and contemplation, to be mindful and to explore their senses. We also encourage disconnection with outside distractions to reconnect with the heart, to hear their inner voice, to feel their bodies, to feel their souls. We believe that everyone has what it takes inside of them to heal, but unfortunately nowadays everyone is so busy, and everything goes so fast that we seem to have forgotten how slowing down, reconnecting to oneself and simply being instead of doing can have an incredible impact on our wellbeing. Through their journey at Le Monastère guests discover the hidden treasure where culture, wellbeing, and the quest for meaning come together to spark a transformational change in their lives. The transformation doesn’t always have to be big, it can be through small changes and increasing awarness. Taking care of oneself is an ongoing process and that’s why we follow up with guests one month after their stay to inquire on how we can assist them furthermore on their wellness path. Giving Back As a non-profit organization, making cultural and wellness programs accessible and attainable is at the heart of our mission. The money spent at Le Monastère is reinvested in our giveback program which allows us to offer solidarity respites for caregivers and health care workers who also need to slow down and take care of themselves. For our guests, it is rewarding to know that by taking care of themselves they help us to take of those who take care of others. By visiting Le Monastère des Augustines they participate in a beautiful chain of benevolence. Contact Info For more information or to book your next stay, visit: monastere.ca/en.

FIND YOUR HARMONY

travel offers you that escape W

hen was the last time you traveled to a different city or country? No, not travel for work. Travel to relax, travel to re-connect with yourself, travel for the sake of your Harmony. For many, it has been since the beginning of Covid. For almost two years now, the world has been in a collective holding pattern. That being said, travel didn’t lose its meaning, instead I believe it has gained more meaning. When we travel, it reminds us to be present and connect with the world and those around us. We socialize with others, learn about new cultures, taste authentic cuisines-traveling makes us remember what it feels like to actually live. It changes our perception and perspective of life. The mental peace we enjoy when we travel is unrivalled. Do I have you packing your bags, yet? Read on to discover the importance of travel and why you should travel at least once per year! Spring Cleaning Isn’t Just For Your Home We are so busy in our daily lives that our mind is always occupied with to-do lists, tasks and just general everyday monotony. Whether an assignment for work,

reliving the day’s dialogue with our co-worker or buying groceries, our mind does not cease. It’s no wonder we can become forgetful, struggle to remain focused and find time for self-care. We need to declutter our minds so we can gain a fresh outlook and have something to look forward to. Travel allows us to physically change the scenery where we can put our mind to rest. We escape our daily routine to create a different vantage point. We get to be away from everything that typically creates shackles around our thinking. We learn to rest again and the only thing that matters is our journey and the destination. Travel helps you remember the magic of your inner peace. Expands Your View When you have the opportunity to travel to a new place you get to witness things you’ve never seen before. This feeling reminds you of the experience of awe and wonder. You realize there is more to the world than what you have been dealing with day in and day out. Traveling to a far off place especially, is worlds away from your normal existence. You not only experience new

tastes and people, you experience different opinions and life journeys. Not only does your view of the world physically transform, your worldview mentally evolves. You will never have the same lens to view your own life and surroundings again. You enlarge your gratitude for not only what your witnessing but life in general. Boost Your Ability To Think Outside The Box Your creativity is turned up when you encounter new and exciting experiences. If your day to day hasn’t changed over the last couple of years, why would your creativity be enhanced? When you travel you learn new things, meet with locals, perhaps even eat foods for the first time. All these are new to your neural pathways and open up your vision and creativity to find solutions, see things from a new perspective, perhaps even solve problems you’ve been dealing with for some time. Increases Your Social Network Traveling is an excellent way to remember how to reconnect with new people whether people at your destination or fellow travelers. I can’t tell you how many people I’ve met on my plane trips, even from years ago, and are still my friends on social media and some I’ve even met in person! Shared experience creates commonality and that creates connection. With the pandemic we have been so isolated we have forgotten how amazing this can feel. Create a Lifetime of Memories Whether traveling solo or with friends and family, taking a trip somewhere is giving yourself the chance to build new memories. Traveling alone can be a great adventure and time to learn you again. Managing your trip on your own might take a bit more planning but you’re building your fearless muscle at the same time and it’ll translate to you taking on more when you’re home. Traveling with friends and family can be chaotic in comparison but what if you each set a goal to try new food or a new activity? Holding each other accountable to the bucket list for your trip may be life changing memories

17

and something incredible to build on moving forward, perhaps it even starts a new tradition! Makes You Grateful for Home You might travel to take a break from your usual routine, but it is this very break that makes you realize how much you have at home, what makes home so valuable and what it means to you. When you return from your trip, it makes you thankful for what you have built and how comfortable it is to be in your own bed. Even though you are back in your usual surroundings, perhaps dealing with the same challenges, traveling gives you a new perspective and maybe opens up your mind to overcome your obstacles. Never underestimate the power of a rested mind and body. The magical wonder of home is it feels good to get away, but it feels even better to return. This is true for your physical home, but more importantly “home” within you. Traveling is a suitcase full of surprises and new adventures. It’s an adjustment to new time zones and new cultures. It’s a refreshing treat that makes you see things clearer. Smell better. Taste better. Traveling opens new doors and sometimes closes old ones. It makes you begin to wonder about what you have back home or perhaps question that maybe life is better lived somewhere else, sometimes even with someone else, or alone. Traveling is a path that may lead you to another path and pull you out of habits, forcing you to experience life, it reminds us to not simply live by routines and schedules that only limit you and trap you into a cycle. Traveling makes you remember the food you ate, the sight you saw, the people you met a long time ago. Traveling is about meeting people that may change your life, or whose lives you may change. Traveling is a hop, a skip, or leap toward something, someone or somewhere new. Traveling can change you & introduce you to your Harmony. Written by: Nora Sophia, creator of Harmony

WHAT IS WELLNESS TO YOU? fresh perspectives always matter

By: Wynita Yancy

hat do you think wellness is about? I’d love to hear your thoughts because I felt a little conflicted, or rather... I paused to ponder whether wellness is more about finding and doing what’s best for you, or primarily doing what’s best for others. It’s a great question, and does reflect a mental health aspect. Focus on You It could be argued that similarly to a flying situation, the airlines advise that in case of an emergency, an individual put their own oxygen mask on first, before attempting to help anyone else, even their own child. But, doesn’t that feel like a comical idea considering as a parent your instincts are to prioritize your kids? However, it’s pretty much common sense that we will not be sufficiently able to take care of any children, if we don’t first take care of ourselves. SXSW Journey But (and here’s the big but)... what about being pur-

W

pose driven and living to take care of others? I personally believe both perspectives are valid and accurate, and feel majorly inspired by these kinds of deep conversations that were being had at SXSW. It’s honestly been a while since meeting quality people felt so easy, and what a refreshing traveling experience. It was clearly a meeting of the curious, the creative, and world changing entrepreneurs; all taking in the showcase of art and commerce, flowing in an energy of utmost innovation. Fresh Perspectives This conference reminded me what travel and conferences are all about. Seeing a city like Austin, being around fresh ideas and connecting with such a diverse group of individuals definitely reminded that a big part of wellness is keeping your curiosity high, and channels for inspiration open. Travel is a sure way of achieving this element of well-

ness, and South by Southwest in Austin, Texas delivered in multiple ways. I’m going to briefly share what the trip highlights were for me and would love any future recommendations sharing your experiences around Austin, TX travel. The Austin Proper Hotel: Well designed hotel that attracts a great crowd; food was yummy and the service was overall excellent. Food: Aside from The Peacock Restaurant I visited at the hotel for breakfast and cocktails, I ventured to Flower Child, The Well, and La Condesa for food. Everything I had was amazing and I’d highly recommend each for casual meetings, networking and grabbing a bite while you’re in the area. Event networking: SXSW had the most incredible people. My Creative Studio Tiny Elephant, and I will definitely have new friendships that we’ll keep in touch with, as well as new business opportunities that became available just from being interested and open to new conversations. Fun: Y’all... Texas is fun and Austin did not underper-

21

form. Between the live music events and complimentary event massages at Austin Deep, there was never a dull moment we had on this trip. The Music Festival was highly impressive and the energy among attendees felt electric. Celebrating it’s return after a two year hiatus, I’m happy to report SXSW is back with a fresh battery to rejuvenate the mentally hungry and those seeking creative stimulation. If that is you, I challenge you, (and it makes sense to think about), in your own wellness journey, what inspires you to be your best self? Or where do you go to reset or get strategic to think outside of the box? When have you last tried something new to keep you feeling excited? If anything I’ve said resonates, I highly recommend attending SXSW next year, if you have the opportunity. Enjoy Life Additionally, as Spring and Summer approach, I’m feeling the continued vibe to enjoy some of the best weather in Texas, and stay mentally aligned via other Texas based events like Fiesta in San Antonio! Keep an eye out on The Hotel Guide’s social media for more fun updates and travel tips.

SHINTA MANI WILD

escape to the cambodian jungle dventure awaits at Shinta Mani Wild Bensley Collection where guests can enjoy a host of wild bespoke Bensley experiences that exemplify the camp’s spirit of fun and adventure, promising authentic interactions with the incredible national parkland setting – all with a twist of Shinta Mani style. From the exhilarating moment of arrival - criss-crossing the forest and rapids via a 400m zip line - there is no such thing as a typical day at Bensley Collection – Shinta Mani Wild, a radical concept for an all-inclusive luxury tented camp nestled deep in Cambodia’s South Cardamom National Park. Protecting the Environment Guests that share Shinta Mani Wild’s passion for protecting its precious natural environment might find themselves joining Wildlife Alliance rangers motorcycling through the forest on anti-poaching patrols and tracking

A

previously unrecorded wildlife activity. Funded through the Shinta Mai Foundation, the camp’s ranger station enables the non-profit Wildlife Alliance to carry out vital conservation work in the area, including protecting animals from poaching, removing snares and preventing illegal logging. Traverse the Jungle Guests can traverse the secret estuary backwaters on luxurious six-metre pontoon-style boats designed by Bill Bensley – so naturally they each have a fully-equipped bar and a top deck with daybed and sun loungers, dropping anchor wherever they please; whether to explore the mangroves by kayak or enjoy a truly wild BBQ of freshly caught crab prepared by their on-board Bensley Adventure Butler. Delicacies Abound Discovering – and tasting – Cambodia’s natural larder

in the company of Khmer Executive Chef Tim Pheak is next on the agenda. When Shinta Mani Wild first opened a botanist discovered an entirely new species of the exotic flower growing at the camp, alongside fragrant wild vanilla. Guests can join Chef Tim on his daily foraging in the forest and learn among other things, their krasang from their mangosteen and their angkeadei from their Moringa. Post-forest immersion, Chef Tim will teach guests how to transform the indigenous Cambodian herbs and plants into flavour-packed dishes to enjoy at Headquarters. One of the favourite foraged items of the Shinta Mani Wild team is a jungle fruit named kuy, which tastes like the lovechild of an orange, mango and passion fruit. Rest and Relaxation All of this adventuring calls for some well-deserved rest and relaxation. Step forward the Khmer Tonics Spa, whose chemical-free treatments feature reviving Khmer tonics made from medicinal plants foraged from the rainforest and bottled onsite. Living up to its name, the spa’s two treatment rooms are set amid dramatic natural boulders, but the river takes centre stage, too: guests can enjoy a river-stone foot massage while soaking in a waterfall pool. Alternatively, guests may choose to unwind amongst nature by trying a Cambodian take on tenkara: a meditative form of Japanese

35

catch and release fly fishing. ‘On the rocks’ takes on a whole new meaning via the camp’s picnics, all thoughtfully prepared by highly skilled Bensley Butlers, which can be enjoyed beside the camp’s cascading waterfall, atop a mountain, or wherever guests please. The pièce de résistance is the camp’s WW2 Land Rover which has been given the Bensley treatment to transform it into a mobile cocktail bar. True Conservation Shinta Mani Foundation spearheads the camp’s conservation and community outreach programmes, including providing long-term employment opportunities to the local inhabitants where there is minimal infrastructure and fewer work prospects. Shinta Mani Wild Bensley Collection, in conjunction with the Foundation, nurtures its natural environment through partnerships with respected conservation organizations including Wildlife Alliance and the Cambodian Government. This extreme exercise in ingenuity enables guests to explore this pristine wilderness, while making the lowest possible impact on the land, offering a luxury adventure with intimate access to one of Asia’s most stunning forest ecosystems. HOTEL VILLA OLMI

peaceful oasis minutes from florence by: Linda Beach

ave you ever wanted to stay in a place that is just steps from the hustle and bustle of one of the most amazing cities in the world, yet has the calming essence of a country retreat? Hotel Villa Olmi delivers just that! This 62-room upscale property is nestled just on the outskirts of the vibrant streets of Florence in the residential suburb of Bagno a Ripoli. Surrounded by acres of lush greenery, the expansive grounds are composed of a main hotel, a historic villa and two delightful country-style homes. To one side of this large estate is rolling hills. Another side is lined with groves of olives. The remaining land is occupied by a charming mixture of manicured lawns, wandering paths, geometric gardens and luscious flowering plants. Aptly named after two giant elms in the garden (olmi means elm in Italian), Villa Olmi has a rich and storied history dating back to the early 1400’s. History Once a sprawling country residence for a wealthy Florentine family, the original farmhouse was destroyed in 1529 when Spanish troops laid siege to Florence. Rebuilt not long after, the land was transferred to the Mozzi family, who also owned the most stately palazzo in all of Florence. It is likely that every visiting cardinal, ambassador and prince was hosted by the Mozzi clan. The Mozzi family was well-known for their massive collection of great artworks, now displayed in museums around the world. It was this love of art that inspired Giulio dei Mozzi to update the property in 1781, when he commissioned artists to create stunning frescoes on the

H

walls and ceilings. Uncovered in 2006, these incredible works of art have been restored for the guests to enjoy. As time marched on, farming was halted on the property and the country villa was abandoned. In 1999, the estate was purchased by the Lotti family who undertook the mammoth task of restoring the buildings and land. Using expert craftsmen employing traditional techniques, the frescoes, vaulted brick wine cellar, secret underground passage and elegant gardens were brought back to life. Now guests can wander the grounds just as they were in their 18th-century glory. The Three Faces of Olmi One of the things I love most about Hotel Villa Olmi is that there are three distinct properties located on the grounds: La Fattoria (the farmhouse), La Colonica (the country house) and La Villa

(the historic villa). Each has a different personality and appeal. La Fattoria (the farmhouse) The main hotel is called La Fattoria because of its origins. But nothing about this building shouts “ordinary” farmhouse. Instead, its exterior stature is neat and understated. The terracotta and white facade belies the grandeur that lives just beyond the magnificent fountain out front. As you enter the lobby you are instantly drawn in by the eclectic decor, garnered from the owner’s world travels. The atmosphere is elegant and classic. Plush sofas are strategically placed in multiple groupings to encourage conversation. I marveled at the antique furnishings, intriguing artwork, interesting knick knacks and delightful statues adorning the walls and walkways. Rich rugs cover the tiled floors, and up above, I noticed period detailing such as high arches, beamed ceilings and Murano glass chandeliers. At one end of the lobby sits a stately grand piano. Just beyond the sweeping glass walls, I caught a glimpse of the lush gardens and sparkling swimming pool. La Fattoria houses 33 Classic rooms, 9 Superior rooms and 5 Junior Suites. The suites have the added luxury of a kitchenette and tranquil private garden, complete with lounge chairs and a bench swing. The Tuscan-style rooms are luxurious, yet comfortable. High wood-beamed ceilings, terracotta tiled floors, fine draperies and marbled-top furnishings created a stunning first impression. Throughout the property, I found all the modern amenities I’d expect: free Wi-Fi, daily housekeeping, satellite TV, central heating and air, minibars and 24-hour front desk staffing. Bathrooms are well appointed with marble tile, bidet,

41

hair dryer, magnifying mirror, heated towel rack and either a rainfall shower or jetted tub. My garden suite had a huge tub which I enjoyed soaking in after a long day of exploring. The beds are plush and extremely comfortable. Anothplus for retreat groups or friends traveling together: the king-sized beds can be prepared as two singles. La Villa (the historic villa) When I stepped into the historic villa, I instantly felt as if I’d stepped back in time. This striking 18-century home boasts breathtaking examples of Patrician architecture. Dozens of Murango glass chandeliers adorn the high ceilings, while original stucco work and delightful frescoes embellish the walls. There are 12 sleeping chambers in the villa, including six deluxe rooms, three junior suites and three suites. I loved how each one is uniquely decorated with rich linens and lavish touches. This is an enchanting place, where I imagined ladies and gentlemen in their finest frocks dancing the night away on the expansive ballroom floor. If you’re looking for an unusual and exquisite setting for a romantic wedding or special event, look no further. And if you or your guests decide to arrive by helicopter,

42

there’s a heliport tucked away in the corner of the property. One of my favorite surprises was the underground tunnel that connected the villa to the farmhouse. It was originally a passage to the stables but now you’ll find statue-lined halls under a vaulted crimson brick ceiling, a small gym and several meeting rooms. There’s also a cozy wine cellar where tastings can be arranged for you and your fellow travelers. You’ll sip some of the best Tuscan labels, paired with a variety of cured meats and cheeses. La Colonica (the country house) As a retreat leader, I was thrilled to discover La Colonica, two lovely Tuscan-style country homes sitting side by side in a far corner of the property. In each unit, there are four large bedrooms with en suite bathrooms and comfortable sitting areas both inside and out. Both boast a massive kitchen, perfect for the cooking classes offered by the hotel. There’s even a pizza oven on the patio of one unit. These quiet and cozy homes can be combined into one for larger groups. Food Fit For Royalty In keeping with the exquisite nature of the property, the restaurant, Il Cavalierre, offers a delightful array of local favorites, paired with rare wines from the world’s best cellars.

It is obvious that Chef Francesco Lorenzini loves to experiment with food as art. Each dish was carefully prepared in a way that engaged all my senses. It not only looked almost too good to eat, but it tasted divine. The breakfast buffet is massive. You’ll find a full espresso bar, plus traditional Italian favorites, such as sweet pastries, savory breads, fresh fruits, yogurt, granola, cheeses, tomatoes and cured meats. In addition, they serve up tourist-friendly favorites like scrambled eggs, bacon and potatoes. In order to offer guests the freshest fare possible, the restaurant abides by the philosophy of “zero kilometer”, which refers to using only local ingredients that have not traveled far after production. The menu changes with the season and incorporates many ingredients harvested straight from the villa’s garden. This is true “farm to table” eating, a tradition familiar to Italians but a special treat to those of us visiting from the US. There are several indoor dining areas, including a glass-walled veranda that overlooks the gardens. During the warmer months, the walls slide open so guests can dine al fresco. Tables are also set up under the vine-covered pergola, giving guests a view of the night stars twinkling above.

A Full-Service Venue As if everything I’ve shared isn’t enough to entice you to stay at Villa Olmi, pet owners will be happy to hear that the property welcomes your furry friends at no extra charge. If you’re traveling with children and want a night on the town, they’ll arrange for a babysitter to entertain your little ones. The hotel offers a full concierge service, including the organization of interesting tours and experiences in Florence and the Tuscan countryside. Imagine gazing down over the lush landscape in a helicopter or hugging the winding roads in a Ferrari. For those hosting meetings or classes, the conference rooms can accommodate up to 100 attendees and has access to the latest in conference technology. Engaged couples wanting to declare eternal love can book the small twelfth-century chapel for their vow exchange or arrange an intimate affair in the garden. Then leave it to the competent staff to arrange an elegant reception, complete with fine porcelain dishes, silver cutlery and crystal stemware. Chef Lorenzini will be happy to work with you to create the perfect menu for your special day. Last but certainly not least is free private parking for those arriving by car. If you don’t have your own vehicle, Villa Olmi has a shuttle service that provides transportation to the Florence city center at scheduled times throughout the day. One thing to note: this service was suspended due to Covid but will resume in April 2022. The Doors Are Open When you’re ready to book your dream trip to Tuscany,
