Publisher’s Note EDWARD R. LEOS

What a journey! 25 years ago, Hotel Guide of San Antonio was launched. The goal: target travelers before they ventured to the Alamo City by direct mailing to 10,000 travel agents each edition. Now, our magazine covers the world, is direct emailed to 24 MILLION travelers yearly, seen online at www.thehotelguide.com and across our social media networks. To say that we have grown is an understatement! None of this would be possible had it not been for my former partner and original visionary of The Hotel Guide - Robert Ruggiero. His steadfast sense of detail and creativity launched a “pet project” of his into a global platform. Simply... amazing. This year we plan on commemorating as much of our history as we can but also focusing on the terrific future that lies ahead. This edition is a testament to that. We have a new logo, new brand, new design. Why? Because it matters. 25 years is a long time and our readers deserve to always have

the best of us. This edition again covers some of Texas grandest escapes - including a feature on West Texas and another 25th Anniversary celebration in the Hyatt Hill Country Resort. Don’t forget to check out our “Destinations” section along with our updated “Wellness Travel” section. You won’t want to miss that informative content. For great story ideas or to be a part of our “Experiences” section, send me a personal e-mail by clicking here. Looking for great hotel deals? Remember that you can book all of your travel from our website or by simply clicking here. Travel. Make Memories.

Aunt Mary’s lawn is where families gather on blankets during the summer to watch movies under the stars, and Henry’s Hollow, named after the ranch founder’s son who was known for merrymaking, is where we toast s’mores over a roaring fire each night with new and old friends.” WOODBINE DEVELOPMENT Before the resort ever opened its doors, when it was only open land full of grazing cattle, Dallas-based Woodbine Development Corporation recognized that the history of the land and the family should inform and inspire the look, feel and experience found on property. Serving as the developer/owner, Woodbine brought the resort to life in close collaboration with the family, who maintains an interest in the property to this day through the Rogers-Wiseman Family Interests. “Several decades ago, we never dreamed our early conversations with the Wiseman family would give way to a partnership that would become the foundation for this award-winning Texas resort,” said John Scovell, founder and chairman of Woodbine. PERFECT SOUTH TEXAS GETAWAY “Over the years and still today, Hyatt Regency Hill Country’s success has remained deeply rooted in relationships cultivated during vacations, meetings, milestone celebrations and even workdays,” Scovell added. “This destination has become part of the stories of countless people who have come here to learn, explore, make memories and make a living. the buckhorn museum

he Buckhorn Museum features wildlife from all over the world; including fish from the seven seas, animals from every continent and strange animal oddities which have been collected for over 100 years! Our exhibit halls are comprised of over 520 species of wildlife—many of which are record holders. PRIZE-WINNING The Buckhorn’s most prized record holder is the famous ‘78 Point Buck’. This impressive rack was sold to the saloon owner himself, Albert Friedrich, for a mere $100 dollars back in 1890. Other amazing specimens include a record 1,056 pound black marlin and a 10,000 year old prehistoric Irish elk. HISTORY In 1881, seventeenyear-old Albert Friedrich, a bartender and bellhop at San Antonio’s Southern Hotel on Main Plaza, decided to open his own saloon across the street. Little did Friedrich know, over 130 years later his Buckhorn Saloon and Museum would be one of San Antonio’s top attractions and continue to entertain tourists from all over the world. Shortly after opening The Buckhorn Saloon, Albert learned that many folks traveling off the ol’ dusty trail didn’t have much money in their pockets. Albert had the brilliant idea to accept horns and antlers in exchange for a free beer or whiskey from his saloon. From then on, The Buckhorn collection grew to become one of the world’s most unique and largest collections of horns and antlers. The impressive horn and antler collection lined every wall and ceiling, which is why it is known as the Buckhorn Hall of Horns. In 1922, the first year of Prohibition in the United

States, the Buckhorn made its first move to the corner of Houston and South Flores Streets. Many saloons, unable to serve alcoholic beverages, closed their doors, but Friedrich used his collection and his creativity to keep the Buckhorn afloat. In 1956, the Lone Star Brewery of San Antonio purchased The Buckhorn and built a facility to house the original bar and collection that would serve as their hospitality and sampling room. The collection continued to grow and the Buckhorn persevered as one of San Antonio’s most popular tourist attractions. In 1996 Stroh’s Brewing Company, decided to divest itself of the historical collection. The future of the Buckhorn looked bleak until Mary Friedrich Rogers, granddaughter of Albert Friedrich, and her husband, Wallace committed to preserving this important part of San Antonio history, stepped forward to purchase the collection. While the Buckhorn continued to entertain more than 150,000 visitors a year at its former location, the new owners felt that a more central downtown location would be advantageous. In 2006, The Buckhorn Saloon and Museum expanded again when an additional museum, The Texas Ranger Museum was added onto the attraction. The Texas Ranger Museum features hundreds of authentic Texas Ranger artifacts including automatic handguns, shotguns, badges and more. The museum also features a recreation of San Antonio at the turn of the century in Ranger Town. The town includes a replica Buckhorn Saloon, a jail cell, blacksmith and a replica of the 1934 Ford V8 Deluxe— the famous Bonnie & Clyde getaway car. TAKE AN ECLECTIC ADVENTURE

I

n West Texas, visitors’ accommodations are as memorable as the destination’s beautiful landscape. The free-spirited Big Bend region, often called “The Last Frontier,” brims with unique lodging options perfect for your next getaway. MARFA In Marfa, El Cosmico is an 18-acre nomadic hotel and campground that blends hip, spare amenities and a freewheeling vibe. Founder and area native Liz Lambert bought the land in 2006, transforming it with her eye for boho-chic style. Among the most popular of the rentable units are seven vintage trailers, each with a different aesthetic. The Imperial Mansion is a 45-foot-long suite decked out in amenities including king and twin-size beds, a full bathroom, a full kitchen, AC/heating and a Cedar deck, while the Little Pinky is 18-feet-long, cute, cozy and, of course, hot pink. Visitors looking for glamorous camping, or glamping, can stay in one of El Cosmico’s tepees. Spanning 22 feet in diameter, each tepee features a queen bed, a love seat, a daybed, a lamp, electrical outlets and speakers. Other lodging units include

a yurt and safari tents, and those who bring their own tents can camp out on the grounds. In addition to unique lodging, El Cosmico amenities include a hammock grove perfect for an afternoon snooze, a communal kitchen for guests to cook, bike rentals to cruise around town and Wi-Fi in the lobby area. TERLINGUA Ghost towns have an undeniable mystique, which can be eerie, sad, peaceful and exciting all at once. Visitors to Terlingua, a ghost town just outside of Big Bend National Park, know the feeling as they walk through the ruins of a mercury-mining community that went bust in the 1940s. Dilapidated buildings, vestigial mine shafts and rocky ruins make the town a fascinating place to explore. For those that prefer peace and quiet, Terlingua is a great place to stay. Villa Terlingua, a 90-year-old ruin refurbished into a quaint house, offers stunning views of the sunrise over the Chisos Mountains and is the only home rental in the ghost town. The escape is located on a spacious 15 acres

The hotel’s award winning 12 Gage Restaurant serves Texas specialties with a gourmet twist and the menu changes seasonally. The restaurant utilizes ingredients grown from its own garden as well as locally sourced beef, poultry and wild game. The adjoining White Buffalo Bar was named one of Texas’ best hotel bars by Texas Monthly, and its signature cocktails and extensive tequila selection are sure to leave visitors refreshed. Guests can also

coastline, there’s no better way to take in the Texas Gulf Coast than by water. Boating may be the conventional way to make the journey, but for those looking for an exhilarating adventure and an intimate encounter with the coast’s natural treasures, nothing compares to a kayaking trip. Whether you prefer a leisurely float with incomparable scenery or a challenging trail that will take you off the beaten path, grab a paddle and get ready for a kayaking experience you’ll never forget. SOUTH PADRE ISLAND Formed three thousand years ago, the Laguna Madre in South Padre Island covers 130 miles of coast and is surrounded by the Lower Rio Grande Wildlife Refuge, the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge and the Padre Island National Seashore. You’re bound to catch some incredible views and see wildlife roaming the shore, or get the catch of the day as the shallow waters are perfect for light spinning tackle. GALVESTON AREA Kayakers interested in exploring unique plant life should head up the coast to Galveston. While Galveston is primarily known for its pristine beaches and historic homes, it’s also home to thousands of

acres of healthy wetlands. With the largest seagrass habitat on the upper Texas coast, a number of trails are available to explore the beauty of the bay, including a 19-mile route that leads to more than 200 acres of seagrass. To make a day of it, take a break from your exploration and enjoy a picnic on the beach or take advantage of your surroundings and do some bird watching, as Galveston is one of the top birding destinations in the U.S. In fact, the Galveston Bay Estuary is the largest and most productive on

the Texas coast with more than 500 species of birds residing, wintering, or migrating through southeast Texas. A FISHING EXTRAVAGANZA For fishing enthusiasts, every anglers dream

comes true in the popular Matagorda Bay. Most enthusiasts are familiar with the Matagorda Bay but may not have explored the bay in its entirety, as 35 miles of the shoreline is only accessible by boat. This virtually untapped area gives anglers the advantage and the element of surprise while sneaking up on redfish, trout and flounder. With more than five different trails, the kayaking possibilities of Matagorda Bay are endless. For a guided tour, take part in the Matagorda Kayak Excursions offered by the Lower

19

Colorado River Authority (LCRA) through the LCRA’s Matagorda Bay Nature Park. Excursions are offered on Saturdays during the spring and summer seasons and accommodate all skill levels as well as paddling instructions for beginners. If you’d prefer to venture out on your own, rent a kayak from the LCRA and explore the 1,600 acres of the nature park. Some of the Bay’s most popular trails include one that passes by the Lydia Ann, a historic lighthouse close to the wildlife refuge, and one that goes along the riverbanks the Karankawa Indians and early settlers called home. PORT O’CONNOR For authentic trails that take you off the beaten path, look no further than Port O’Connor, a small fishing town and the “Best Kept Secret in Texas” on Matagorda Bay with several trails and islands marked by the locals. Be careful though, you’ll get more trail recommendations than you have time to paddle! One of the most popular trails goes through Saluria Bay, where it’s common to see dolphins swimming and jumping through the deep waters. Another passes the Matagorda Island Lighthouse, which has been standing since 1852. With so much history, wildlife and coastline to see, take your Gulf Coast adventure into your own hands and paddle away. For a comprehensive guide to kayaking in the Lone Star State, consult Texas Parks and Wildlife’s paddling trails site. PERFECT GETAWAY Grab your paddle and cruise along the Texas coastline. Take in the scenic beaches and unique wildlife that make Texas kayaking like no other. TRAVELING?

5 tips for healthy eating

by: Bridget Therese

raveling and staying healthy can sometimes be a challenge. Below, our Wellness Travel Expert, Bridget Therese offers some convenient solutions for your next adventure.

T

1) BRING SNACKS - It may sound like a lot of trouble, but trust me on this one! If you have a favorite protein bar or even a meal replacement shake, this is a great opportunity to pack them and bring them with you. Why? Because if you can get small yet satisfying meals in throughout the day, you will be way less likely to splurge on other high calorie meals. Another bonus, it will save you money and time! 2) PLAN YOUR SPLURGES No true vacation is complete without that amazing breakfast or dinner, let’s be honest! But instead of having 18 amazing dinners, plan just a couple that you can look forward to and know that you will enjoy every moment of it to your little hearts content. Not every meal has to be epic, but plan a couple epic meals and enjoy the heck out of it, guilt free! 3) PLAN WHERE TO EAT AHEAD OF TIME - When you aren’t having one of your epic meals, do make healthy choices. One of the best ways to do this is to research restaurants as part of your travel and trip planning. Find a few places that offer healthier options. The great thing about traveling these days is that more and more restaurants are offering healthier choices. You just need to do a little foot work and scout them out. Planning ahead of time saves

the “where do you wanna eat? I don’t know, where do you wanna eat?” conversation and keeps you on the healthy track. 4) DON’T BE AFRAID TO MODIFY YOUR MENU ITEMS - I’m not saying be that person who orders the Roasted Chicken with Asiago Polenta and Truffled Mushrooms and then asks them to remove everything cook it on different spices and basically makes up a whole new dish on the spot! No, I’m talking about simple changes that won’t embarrass your friends and family, but still save the calories. Try asking for veggies to be steamed, or cooked “dry” no butter or oil. Ask for your fajitas to be cooked dry, ask for whole wheat pancakes, and egg white omelets. There are simple modifications that can you can request but go a long way. 5) CAREFUL WITH DRINKS - Just like planning out your splurge meals, be mindful of your drinks too. Those calories add up really quickly! Especially on vacation, it’s easy to keep the drinks flowing, but don’t forget about water! When you are in a hot beachy climate, it’s extra important to hydrate. Alternate drinks with water, don’t have drinks with every meal and always plan a sober ride. WELLNESS TRAVEL

a cool running + wellness retreat

R

un Wild Retreats + Wellness, a travel company offering premier women’s trail running and wellness retreats in five countries, has opened registration for its Costa Brava Running + Wellness Retreat taking place April 21-27, 2018. The week-long itinerary, starting in the historic city of Girona, features daily guided trail runs from village to village along the Mediterranean Sea, natural running form clinics, wellness workshops, aprèsrun tapas, visits to ancient castles, medieval villages and a 15th-century monastery overlooking the sea. Guests dine on the world-class Catalan cuisine for which this region is known, stay in luxury boutique hotels, and ancient castles converted into modern accommodations. A TOTAL RETREAT While Run Wild Retreats + Wellness’s original mission seven years ago was to simply introduce more

women to the joys and adventures of trail running, it soon became apparent that women were coming to the retreats at times of transition or upheaval in their lives. The retreats offered not only reprieve from their stressful, time-crunched lives, but led to insights about their current challenges and renew their energy and confidence in their ability to overcome their difficulties. “Traveling to a new place is an amazing way to recharge and make lasting investments in one’s health and wellness,” says Elinor Fish, who founded Run Wild Retreats + Wellness in 2010. “Each trail run is about connecting with your surroundings, your love of running and simply savoring the present moment. That’s when you are able to truly tap into running’s stress-reducing effects.” WELLNESS TRAVEL Research by the Global Wellness Institute (GWI)

confirms that Americans are especially drawn to active wellness travel opportunities these days. GWI’s January 2017 report says that the U.S. has emerged as the world’s largest wellness tourism market because more than ever, Americans are suffering the ill effects of overwork, excess stress, insufficient sleep and chronic anxiety. TRANSFORMATIONAL That’s why, within the retreat’s supportive setting created by professional guides and the retreat leader, guests are able to safely try things that they wouldn’t necessarily do otherwise. TELEHEALTH

N

healthcare just a click away

obody plans on getting strep throat or twisting their ankle while on vacation or traveling for work. But when it happens, you can use your iPhone, Android or any mobile device to access a physician, get medical advice or, if needed, a prescription. It’s called telehealth, the delivery of healthcare via phone, tablet or computer, and it has the potential to save every consumer – and our nation’s healthcare system, including employers -- substantial amounts of time and money. Telehealth makes it possible for everyone to access quality, affordable care: • Individuals with limited benefits or little-to-no insurance coverage • Travelers who are on-the-road for business or recreation and need medical attention for non-emergent illnesses • People who forget to pack their prescription medications – or simply run out of Rx products COST-EFFECTIVE, CONVENIENT The fastest-growing segment of services in telehealth are those connecting consumers with clinicians 24/7. Typically, these are for nonemergency issues such as colds, flu, earaches and skin rashes, and they cost around $45 per consultation, compared with approximately $100 at a doctor’s office, $160 at an urgent-care clinic or $750+ at an emergency room. Some direct-to-consumer services enable users to connect 24/7 via phone or video with a boardcertified physician who can either prescribe medication or provide advice on what to do. They also offer nurse advice lines to provide answers to medical questions day or night, and the ability to email a specialist to get a quick response from a physician, dentist, pharmacist or other healthcare specialist. The popularity of telehealth comes on the heels of a trend in which employers are moving away from fully-insured health plans toward self-insurance, as

well as the rise of consumer-driven health plans or high-deductible plans that shift more of the costburden and decision-making responsibility onto the employees and their families. Bottom line: Telehealth makes it possible for everyone to drastically reduce out-of-pocket medical expenses. SAVES TIME, INCREASES PRODUCTIVITY Scheduling a doctor visit requires time off from work, dealing with unpredictable medical bills, and long wait times. For many, it can take an average of 24 days to schedule an appointment with a doctor, and can mean waiting for at least an hour to see the doctor. With the growing doctor shortage, fueled by aging baby boomers and population growth, this situation is likely to get worse. By providing access to medical advice more quickly than traditional office visits, telehealth can prevent individuals from needing care or getting sicker than necessary, and can also minimize lost productivity costs. FINDING RIGHT TELEHEALTH SERVICE Employers and consumers should look for a direct-to-consumer healthcare service that offers comphrehensive, nationwide telehealth connectivy at a low annual rate that covers the entire family. The service should rely on the highest quality physicians and use a large number of guidelines developed specifically for delivering care remotely, including a five-point scale for determining whether a sore throat, for example, is likely due to streptococcus infection that warrants antibiotics. By increasing access to physicians and specialists, telehealth can help ensure that patients receive the right care, at the right place, at the right time. CORTONA, ITALY

as romantic as ‘under the tuscan sun’

by: Marie Hernandez, www.SeriouslyTravel.com

I

t’s always been my intention to visit Italy. Home to some of the world’s best food, art, culture, music, inventions, and hot men (OH that accent!) Here’s my experience in Cortona, Italy – Yes, It’s As Romantic As ‘Under The Tuscan Sun’! Tuscany, in particular, has been my target. I’m in love with the little medieval towns and especially wanted to see Cortona, you know, the place where Diane Lane’s character, Frances, finds herself getting off a tour bus, buying a villa on a whim, and falling in love with herself and ultimately finding love again after a devastating divorce? The whole story was way too close to home…but that’s another post!

The heavenly smell of coffee and pastries are in the air and men and women are in the coffee bars discussing things I don’t understand. I love watching the locals, Italians are so eloquent with their hand motions and facial expressions; even the kids speak this way.

The town of Cortona is the oldest Etruscan town in Tuscany and is located on top of San Egidio hill; Having visited two times before when it was cold, protected by ancient stone walls preserved to mainthis past June I made my way back to Tuscany, this tain their original beauty. While strolling through time when the sunflowers were blooming and the them, I couldn’t help but wonder who walked the fragrant grapes for Chianti were soaking in the warm same streets, what was there life like, what did they sun. do? I wanted to celebrate my birthday in Cortona and that’s exactly what I did. I arrived in the morning, just as the day was starting. I love this time of the morning in Italy, there aren’t many people on the streets and the locals are busy with their daily chores.

In the afternoon I walked slowly through town scattered with stores, cafes, restaurants, and coffee bars. The main square, Piazza Della Repubblica, is charming and filled with places to sit and people watch, one of my favorite things to do! continued on next page

42

building, dating back to the early eighteenth century.  The barrel vault covering the middle of the central part of the ceiling was repainted in the last twenty years of the XIX century by Giovanni Brunacci. It’s a must-see when visiting Cortona. The other churches are of equal beauty, many within walking distance. Museums small and large are scattered within the city, each one with unique art dating back to the 14th century. The Museum of the Etruscan Academy has pieces from ancient Egypt to futurism. One of the most interesting artifacts is the Etruscan Lampadio a bronze piece from the fifth century BC. I was sponsored by Avignonesi a unique and wonderful vineyard, where I was treated to a tour of their vineyards and wine tasting. As those who follow me regularly know, I LOVE Chianti and the red wines of Tuscany and, in my humble opinion, Avignonesi produces some of the best in the region. I also enjoyed a lavish lunch which included wine pairing…needless to say I was well on my way to be full on tipsy before I left! Each of the awardwinning wines is produced on their properties that span throughout the Tuscan area. It was a wonderful afternoon and I would have been happy to visit their property even if they didn’t sponsor me! Cortona is filled with villas, hotels, and Airbnbs so accommodations are plentiful. I chose to stay within the city walls literally steps away from the main square. I enjoyed waking up and wondering the

streets and enjoying delicious cappuccinos before most people came out for the day and staying out late eating glorious meals and trying a variety of wines. The center city is clean, safe, and easy to navigate. Most local business owners know enough English to help you get alone and were very patient with my very limited Italian. It’s a place that’s close to my heart and I can’t get enough of it. I went as a solo traveler but the romance and mood are great for couples. Weddings are held regularly there and it’s a great spot for a honeymoon. It’s also great for families and retreats.
