n search of authentic family getaways? Look no further than San Antonio. This 18th-century metropolis is one of America’s favorite cities. Filled with historic sites, theme parks and museums, San Antonio creates the perfect backdrop for a memorable family experience.

History

Step back in time to the days of colonial Spain when you visit the 18th century missions that spread European culture and converted native people to Christianity—forever changing the face of America. Originally established as a mission in 1718, The Alamo is most well known for its 1836 battle where 189 defenders of Texas freedom held the mission against more than 4,000 Mexican soldiers for 13 days during the Texas Revolution. The Alamo remains in the heart of San Antonio as a symbol of liberty. Its tranquil gardens and famous façade welcome over two million patrons each year. San Antonio is also home to four other Spanish colonial missions, which comprise the largest collec-

tion of Spanish colonial architecture in North America. They are connected by the San Antonio River and Mission Trail, an ideal place to hike and bike. Native Americans built the missions, which fostered a sense of community and trained them as artisans. The “Queen of the Missions,” Mission San José was established in 1720. Its grand stone walls, bastions, granary and magnificent church took 62 years to complete. Arguably the most beautiful mission, Concepción looks much like it did almost three centuries ago with original frescos and stunning limestone details. Mission San Juan’s fertile farmlands allowed it to be self-sustainable, while its surplus helped supply the region with produce. Mission Espada contains the best-preserved segment of the acequia (irrigation system) that was used to bring water to the fields. Peruse them all, perhaps during a Sunday mariachi mass as these four missions are still active Catholic parishes.

WE’D DESCRIBE OUR CITY’S CULTURE, BUT HONESTLY, IT’S EASIER TO EXPERIENCE IT. Stop in for a visit, and around every turn, you’ll discover something uniquely San Antonio. From brewery walls lined with masterpieces of modern art to Mexican folk dances on the same stage as Broadway performances, we fill everyday moments with unexpected delights that you’ll only find in our vibrant city. Plan your unforgettable cultural trip at VisitSanAntonio.com.

the Prime and Tanger outlet malls. Kids especially love the largest pair of cowboy boots in the world, found right outside North Star Mall. Towering 40 feet high and 20 feet long, these boots are sure to kick-start a great time for every family!

Museums

Families enjoy nationally acclaimed museums including the Smithsonian-affiliated Institute of Texan Cultures, which tells the stories of the people and cultures that built Texas. Other notable museums include the McNay, which has a grand collection of French Impressionist pieces and the San Antonio Museum of Art, which offers the Nelson A. Rockefeller Center for Latin American Art—the largest repository of its kind. San Antonio also has museums that are totally kid-centric! Little ones can roam through a miniature model of San Antonio and see how your skeleton moves when you ride a bike at the San Antonio Children’s Museum—an interactive learning center where kids play to learn and parents learn to play. The nearby Witte Museum features scientific and historic exhibits like mummies and a dinosaur gallery. Also discover the Witte’s H-E-B Science Treehouse, which offers four levels of fun and experimentation with energy, air power, simple machines, eco-science, weather and sound waves. Here, children can try out the hands-on exhibits and see how science is used in the “real world.” www.thehotelguide.com

Outdoor Fun

Over 300 days of sunshine a year beckon families to enjoy the great outdoors. San Antonio sits on the cusp of the Texas Hill Country, a picturesque region that lures visitors with its beautiful terrain. Adventurers can tube or canoe down spring-fed rivers; fish, water-ski or sail at area lakes; and ride horseback across vast prairies and hike beneath the shade of stately live oaks. For many, San Antonio is the Paseo del Rio, an urban masterpiece better known as the River Walk. These cobble- and flagstone paths border the San Antonio River, 20 feet below street level, as it winds through culture-rich downtown. The River Walk has multiple personalities, quiet and park-like in some stretches, while other areas are full of activity with European-style sidewalk cafes, specialty boutiques, art galleries, theaters, high-rise hotels and more. River cruises are available and accompanied by knowledgeable guides who share stories of surrounding sites. Animal lovers should make time for the San Antonio Zoo. It’s the third largest in the nation with over 3,500 animals. Little discoverers can see rhinos and spider monkeys, visit the African Plains and Amazonia and peek under the sea at the aquarium. Nearby Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch is the perfect place for a safari. Here, over 500 animals from six of the seven continents roam free on a 400-acre 11

TEXAS nio River attract locals.

Culture

Here are a few great stops for circumnavigating the world in the Alamo City. Make a stop at Market Square, the largest Mexican market north of the Rio Grande. Here, a rich mix of family owned cafes, artists and merchants fill fountain-laden plazas with the bright colors and warm hospitality of the Mexican culture. Nearby, the Historic King William District was settled in the early 19th century by German immigrants who built mansions along a slow bend in the San Antonio River. Their culture lives on in their beautiful houses which have been reincarnated into galleries, cafes and museums. Then head over to The Southwest School of Art. Originally a 19thcentury French convent, it’s now a great place for lunch, shopping and gallery hopping.

Golf

With more than 50 courses and practice greens, San Antonio is the perfect golf destination for families. They can take a shot at Hill Country resort courses; make a round along the San Antonio River at Brackenridge, Texas’ most historic course; or test their swings at one of many greens nestled in limestone rock quarries. And with theme parks and attractions close by, there’s something for every member of the family in San Antonio.

Spectator Sports

In San Antonio, visitors can catch a basketball game almost all year long. The four-time world champion San Antonio Spurs heat up the AT&T Center October through June, while the WNBA’s San Antonio Silver Stars take over from May through September. If you’re in the mood for some peanuts and Cracker Jacks®, spend the evening with the San Antonio Missions. The Missions are the Double-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres, so fans get to watch these future stars of the baseball diamond vie for a spot on a big-league roster. Do some good while catching San Antonio’s North American Soccer League team, the San Antonio Scorpions FC, at their new Toyota Field. All net profits from the Scorpions, Toyota Field and nearby STAR (South Texas Area Regional) Soccer Complex are earmarked to help those with special needs through programs and activities at non-profit Morgan’s Wonderland. Prefer athletes on ice? When all the action gets too hot to handle, San Antonio Rampage ice hockey is definitely the coolest sport in town!

Buckhorn Museum A San Antonio Gem

he Buckhorn Museum features wildlife from all over the world; including fish from the seven seas, animals from every continent and strange animal oddities which have been collected for over 100 years! Our exhibit halls are comprised of over 520 species of wildlife—many of which are record holders. Prize-Winning The Buckhorn’s most prized record holder is the famous ‘78 Point Buck’. This impressive rack was sold to the saloon owner himself, Albert Friedrich, for a mere $100 dollars back in 1890. Other amazing specimens include a record 1,056 pound black marlin and a 10,000 year old prehistoric Irish elk. History In 1881, seventeenyear-old Albert Friedrich, a bartender and bellhop at San Antonio’s Southern Hotel on Main Plaza, decided to open his own saloon across the street. Little did Friedrich know, over 130 years later his Buckhorn Saloon and Museum would be one of San Antonio’s top attractions and continue to entertain tourists from all over the world. Shortly after opening The Buckhorn Saloon, Albert learned that many folks traveling off the ol’ dusty trail didn’t have much money in their pockets. Albert had the brilliant idea to accept horns and antlers in exchange for a free beer or whiskey from his saloon. From then on, The Buckhorn collection grew to become one of the world’s most unique and largest collections of horns and antlers. The impressive horn and antler collection lined every wall and ceiling, which is why it is known as the Buckhorn Hall of Horns. In 1922, the first year of Prohibition in the United

States, the Buckhorn made its first move to the corner of Houston and South Flores Streets. Many saloons, unable to serve alcoholic beverages, closed their doors, but Friedrich used his collection and his creativity to keep the Buckhorn afloat. In 1956, the Lone Star Brewery of San Antonio purchased The Buckhorn and built a facility to house the original bar and collection that would serve as their hospitality and sampling room. The collection continued to grow and the Buckhorn persevered as one of San Antonio’s most popular tourist attractions. In 1996 Stroh’s Brewing Company, decided to divest itself of the historical collection. The future of the Buckhorn looked bleak until Mary Friedrich Rogers, granddaughter of Albert Friedrich, and her husband, Wallace committed to preserving this important part of San Antonio history, stepped forward to purchase the collection. While the Buckhorn continued to entertain more than 150,000 visitors a year at its former location, the new owners felt that a more central downtown location would be advantageous. In 2006, The Buckhorn Saloon and Museum expanded again when an additional museum, The Texas Ranger Museum was added onto the attraction. The Texas Ranger Museum features hundreds of authentic Texas Ranger artifacts including automatic handguns, shotguns, badges and more. The museum also features a recreation of San Antonio at the turn of the century in Ranger Town. The town includes a replica Buckhorn Saloon, a jail cell, blacksmith and a replica of the 1934 Ford V8 Deluxe—the famous Bonnie & Clyde getaway car. Ranch which has 190 guestrooms and 13 cabins on a 40,000 acre farm where a lot more than the buffalo roam; you can see over 55 animal species such as wildebeests, rhea, and even giraffes on a tour, followed by a chuck wagon lunch. The animals are more domestic at Crider’s Rodeo which is open weekend nights from May through September. Before the main event—a rodeo and live country music—kids can try their hand at mutton bustin’, or sheep riding. Grab a bathing suit and fishing pole for a trip to Ingram Dam, a local swimming hole that’s also a great spot to people watch on weekends. River Floating New Braunfels is located on the Guadalupe

and Comal rivers, and there’s arguably no better way than to spend a hot summer Saturday than floating on the water. Families can rent inner tubes from companies such as Comal Tubes, and pack a cooler—we suggest juice boxes, cold beer, and fried chicken—to munch on en route. Travelers can also make a trip to Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch a 400-acre property with over 500 animal breeds, including 40 exotics. If you’re catching the town on a rainy day, stop by the McKenna Children’s Museum where hands-on exhibits (Lend-a-Hand Ranch, Destination Space) provide hours of indoor entertainment. Get Wild Start your weekend with a trip to Wichita Falls. The oil and gas story is also on full display at the Museum of North Texas History, as well as exhibits on the city’s cowboy roots. (Don’t miss the collection of 500-plus cowboy hats.) If you’re looking for a more handson experience, head to the River Bend Nature Center, where kiddos can hunt for animal tracks on nature trails, and explore the 7,000-squarefoot, glassenclosed butterfly conservatory, also home to native creatures such as white quails and box turtles. Out on the Lake PK Lake—as it’s known among locals—is well loved for its 300 miles of scenic coastline, limestone cliffs, and quiet inlets. It’s long been a popular family getaway spot for city folk for its lake activities such as fishing, waterskiing, and even SCUBA diving. If you prefer to stay on land, the 1,528-acres Possum Kingdom State Park has camping spots and rustic cabins available for rent. Also keep an eye on www.thehotelguide.com

TEXAS the park’s calendar for ranger-led events such as native plant or geology-focused walks. Explore Texas’s Canyon Land Palo Duro, which cuts through Texas’ high plains, is the second largest canyon in the U.S. (We’ll let you guess which canyon takes home the gold medal.) It’s over 100 miles long and can be over 1,000 feet deep, and while travelers can happily hike along endless trails, you might want to consider exploring the landscape by horseback. You’ll travel even faster at the Palo Duro Canyon Zipline Adventure Park, where zip lines afford you a bird’s eye view of the iconic red rocks. Slip, Slide, and Ride This historic town of 50,000, named for the mustang grapes that were found in abundance throughout the area, was founded in 1843, and still maintains historic charm thanks to a bustling Main Street and gazebo-anchored parks. Thomas the Tank Engine fans will delight in the Grapevine Vintage Railroad; you can jump on the Tarantual Train, made up of two Victorian-style locomotives, for a 21-mile trip to the Fort Worth Stockyards. The hotels here also keep the kiddos in mind: stay at the Great Wolf Lodge—home to an 80,000-square-foot indoor waterpark—or the Gaylord Texan itself a mini-city with rivers, bridges, restaurants and shops. Kids can jump into the lazy river or take cooking classes, while parents head to wine and cheese socials. More Information Looking for more family fun things to do in the Lone Star state? History Lessons

Tons of lessons in the Lone Star State

F

rom 18th-century Spanish missions and settlements on the western frontier to the lands where the buffalo roamed, Texas’s historic towns are as varied as the state is big. For the traveler looking to step into back in time, here are seven towns that will let you dive into the state’s fascinating past.

A Page from History

Germany Redux

A significant group of German emigrants established communities here in the mid-19th century, and their influence can still be felt throughout the state. In Fredericksburg, German traditions and culture endure to the present day, making it a popular day- or weekend-trip in Texas. Amid B&Bs and antique shops, there are lively places for beer and bratwurst, such as the Fredericksburg Brewing Company, or full, traditional German menus, like at the Ausländer Restaurant and Biergarten. Modern restaurants and trendy boutiques abound, while the city also serves as a launching pad for exploring wine country; there are more than ten wineries between Fredericksburg and Johnson City, alone.

Victorian Vision

Like many towns in the region, Brenham was established in the mid-19th century, and prospered with the arrival of the railroad in 1861, followed by the surge of European immigration. Today, its historic downtown has an enviable, picturesque collection of mid- and late-19th-century buildings—most have been sensitively restored and are now home to restaurants and shops. At the core of the historic district is the Washington County Courthouse; a striking

game, and was home to the first daily newspaper in Texas. Because of its past wealth, however, the city still has a remarkable collection of architecture, including grand Victorian-era civic buildings and residences, the ornate Bishop’s Palace, and the structures of the Strand Historic District. Galveston is also renowned for its beach and the Galveston Island Pleasure Pier, where several of the high-flying and spine-tingling rides extend over gulf waters. For those of meeker temperament, there is also a replica of a vintage carousel.

Art Deco-era building that—dating from 1939—is one of the town’s most “modern” buildings.

Spanish Roots

One of the most historic spots in Texas, Goliad and the historic sites nearby provide a singular window into the state’s Spanish, Mexican, and Republic of Texas legacies. Get a feel for colonial missionary life at the Mission Espíritu Santo State Historic Site, a reconstruction of the mid-18th-century Franciscan church that was established by the Spanish during the area’s settlement. The nearby Presidio La Bahia (seen here), a fort built by the Spanish to protect the colony, also gives a sense of the close relationship between the Spanish Crown and the Catholic Church.

Architectural Treasures

At one time, the port city of Galveston, on Galveston Island, was the largest in Texas. It was also the place of many firsts: the Galveston Pavilion, a social club, was one of the first in the state to be illuminated with electricity, and the city had the first telephone, was the site of the first baseball

18 www.thehotelguide.com

Fort Davis, a national historic site administered by the National Park Service, was established as a frontier U.S. military post to protect settlers, travelers, and mail coaches from attacks by Comanche and Apache. Visitors should allow two hours to tour the fort and the six surrounding buildings, which have been restored and furnished in 1880’s style. Time permitting; Check out the 20 other buildings and some 100 ruins, too.

Ever Green

Nacogdoches is one of the oldest towns in the state, with origins going back to the 17th-century French trade with the Nacogdoche Indians, followed by the establishment of Spanish missions in 1716. (In 1779, the Spanish Crown granted the designation of “pueblo,” or town, to the settlement.) Landmarks include La Casa Piedra (now known as the Old Stone Fort, and located on the campus of Stephen F. Austin University); the SterneHoya House Museum, set in 1830 residence of the www.thehotelguide.com

TEXAS prominent merchant Adolphus Sterne; and the Durst-Taylor Historic House & Gardens, which dates to 1835. (More Victorian-era houses can be found along Mound Street.) Nacogdoches also claimed some of the state’s early oil wells, and the downtown reflects the town’s varied fortunes with a mix of restored historic buildings and modern construction. Nacogdoches, as with most of East Texas, is especially verdant in the spring, and there is probably no more splendid display of this than at the Ruby M. Mize Azalea Garden every March.

Art Trek

Established in 1863 as a railroad freight headquarters station, this far-west Texas town enjoyed a moment of Hollywood glamour when Elizabeth Taylor, James Dean, and Rock Hudson stayed here during the filming of the 1956 motion picture Giant. But its present claim to fame is as an unlikely international art world mecca. The late sculptor Donald Judd established his residence and studios here. The buildings now display works by Judd and other artists while the Chinati Foundation—a contemporary art museum—presents large-scale installations. Another of Marfa’s draws involves an age-old mystery: the Marfa Lights, visible on clear nights, are galactic manifestations that sometimes twinkle, and other times seem in an active play of motion. Whether due to geography (Marfa is surrounded by three mountain ranges, and rests on a plateau at almost 5,000 feet) or atmospheric conditions, this phenomenon—or mirage—has been observed since the 19th century. by: Laura Carabello bout seven million people travel abroad each year seeking care related to everything from dental work and weight-loss surgery to cancer treatment, according to Bloomberg Business. A growing number of companies now offer a medical travel benefit, enabling employees to access high quality, more affordable care, whether abroad or in another U.S. state.

A

The Pulse of Medical Travel

· · ·

Here’s a look at the top five medical destinations in the world: 1. Thailand Thailand provides access to major procedures that are 50 to 70 percent cheaper than in the U.S. 2. Mexico Mexico attracts more than one million visiting patients each year, many of whom seek dental work and weight-loss surgery. 3. United States The nation’s medical Centers of Excellence (COE) offer high quality, more affordable surgical procedures than what is typically available locally. 4. Singapore Singapore offers 22 facilities certified by the Joint Commission International, the U.S.-based quality and safety accrediting organization. 5. India India is known for offering high-difficulty operations, such as coronary artery bypass graft surgery, at 90 percent less cost than in the U.S. Before traveling for care, employees should make sure they have a full understanding of: • Financial incentives – These should not limit the diagnostic and therapeutic alternatives that are offered to patients or restrict treatment or referral

options. • Medical Center – The hospitals should be accredited by recognized international accrediting bodies, such as the Joint Commission International. • Prior to Travel – Make sure that local follow-up care has been coordinated and financing arranged to ensure continuity of care. • Rights – Employees should be informed of their rights and legal recourse before agreeing to travel, especially if traveling outside the U.S. • Medical Records – Make sure that when medical records are transferred they meet Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Action (HIPAA) guidelines. • Risks – Employees should have a full understanding of the potential risks of combining surgical procedures with long flights and vacation activities. Medical travel is a win-win for employer and employee alike. It’s a way to access the best possible care – no matter where it is located – at reasonable prices, even when the expense of travel, including airline and accommodations, are taken into account.

a challenging hike with stunning eye candy, the MCCVB recommends exploring the High Peaks Loop. Pacific Grove Coastline: Beginning in early April and lasting through late May, the coastline in Pacific Grove becomes known as the “magic purple carpet” as ice plants blanket the picturesque coast. Visitors can take in the breathtaking sights and enjoy a walk or bike ride along the Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail which runs along this quaint city. Garrapata State Park: From spring through early summer, California poppies, Monterey Indian paintbrush and monkey flowers sprinkle throughout Garrapata State Park along with a wide variety of wildflowers. For a fantastic view and Instagramworthy photo, the MCCVB suggests exploring the western coastal trail that begins at gate 19 off of Highway 1. reat Vegas Festival of Beer returns this spring with Nevada’s largest craft beer festival to date, for the first time expanding to two days on Friday, April 7 and Saturday, April 8, with more than 10,000 attendees expected throughout both days. Produced by Motley Brews and set to the backdrop of Downtown Las Vegas, the seventh annual Great Vegas will offer tastings of more than 500 craft beers from 110 breweries. “Great Vegas Festival of Beer was founded to enhance the beer drinking experience,” said Brian Chapin, founder and CEO of Motley Brews. “This year we’re taking that premise to a new level through the addition of a Friday night event, the Mad Craft Experience, that is basically a science fair for beer lovers. The event has grown from year to year, prompting an expansion to two days in 2017.

Grand Tasting will be held from 3-7 p.m. on Saturday, April 8, with early entry at 2 p.m. Throughout both days, Great Vegas will offer beer-infused and inspired cuisine by some of Las Vegas’ top chefs, life-sized pub games and interactive entertainment.

Experiences

by: Marie Hernandez, www.SeriouslyTravel.com

ew Orleans has quickly become one of my favorite cities. The city’s charm and great food draws me back over and over. During my last trip, I chose to stay with The Bourbon Orleans Hotel a hotel of the New Orleans Hotel Collection. It’s an elegant and historic luxury hotel with a staff and service that makes you feel like you’re among friends. Located in the French Quarter, the boutique hotel is a charming place that has an alluring past. From the minute I walked in I knew my stay would be ideal. Met at the curb by a kind and humorous staff, I was quickly led through check-in and right to my gorgeous room. With several room types to choose from, I chose a King room overlooking the beautiful pool courtyard. The unique slatted, half moon windows gave the room a wonderful aura. The luxurious bed made my nights unbelievably comfortable and hard to get out of in the morning! I’m a firm believer that the service a hotel offers can make or break a visitor’s experience regardless of how beautiful the accommodations are. The Bourbon Orleans excels far beyond expectations. Each member of the staff was eager to go out of their way to make sure my stay was perfect. From the front desk to the chambermaids, everyone met me with a smile and made sure I had all I needed for a perfect stay. The hotel boasts a really great bar called Bourbon O with live music on certain nights and a great staff that will keep you enthralled with local ghost stories and spot on advice for places to get Olean’s famous eats.

N

www.thehotelguide.com

The pool area with deck chairs, umbrellas, and towel service is inviting. It’s a comfortable place to spend a hot day or sit in the evening with a drink or chit chat with friends. The Hotel offers its guests free Wi-Fi and an outstanding onsite restaurant, Roux on Orleans, where you’ll find a great breakfast to start your day, great choices for lunch, dinner, or a late night snack in your room. Definitely try their Southern Pulled Pork Sandwich….to die for!!! The Bourbon Orleans is located close to some of New Orleans great sites. A short walk to Café du Monde is a must and is literally a couple of blocks away. As is the famous Cathedral, great tour companies, and eateries. The hotel is also a beautiful site for a wedding as it’s elegant and newly restored interior makes for a gorgeous setting and pictures. I would highly recommend the Bourbon Orleans when visiting New Orleans; it’s a perfect home base while exploring the French Quarter, getting away for a romantic evening, or enjoying a girl’s get-a-way.
