The Authentic Family Experience s

n search of authentic family getaways? Look no further than San Antonio. This 18th-century metropolis is one of America’s favorite cities. Filled with historic sites, theme parks and museums, San Antonio creates the perfect backdrop for a memorable family experience.

History

Step back in time to the days of colonial Spain when you visit the 18th century missions that spread European culture and converted native people to Christianity—forever changing the face of America. Originally established as a mission in 1718, The Alamo is most well known for its 1836 battle where 189 defenders of Texas freedom held the mission against more than 4,000 Mexican soldiers for 13 days during the Texas Revolution. The Alamo remains in the heart of San Antonio as a symbol of liberty. Its tranquil gardens and famous façade welcome over two million patrons each year. San Antonio is also home to four other Spanish colonial missions, which comprise the largest collec-

tion of Spanish colonial architecture in North America. They are connected by the San Antonio River and Mission Trail, an ideal place to hike and bike. Native Americans built the missions, which fostered a sense of community and trained them as artisans. The “Queen of the Missions,” Mission San José was established in 1720. Its grand stone walls, bastions, granary and magnificent church took 62 years to complete. Arguably the most beautiful mission, Concepción looks much like it did almost three centuries ago with original frescos and stunning limestone details. Mission San Juan’s fertile farmlands allowed it to be self-sustainable, while its surplus helped supply the region with produce. Mission Espada contains the best-preserved segment of the acequia (irrigation system) that was used to bring water to the fields. Peruse them all, perhaps during a Sunday mariachi mass as these four missions are still active Catholic parishes.

WE’D DESCRIBE OUR CITY’S CULTURE, BUT HONESTLY, IT’S EASIER TO EXPERIENCE IT. Stop in for a visit, and around every turn, you’ll discover something uniquely San Antonio. From brewery walls lined with masterpieces of modern art to Mexican folk dances on the same stage as Broadway performances, we fill everyday moments with unexpected delights that you’ll only find in our vibrant city. Plan your unforgettable cultural trip at VisitSanAntonio.com.

Theme Parks

San Antonio is also a top destination for theme park lovers. Enjoy animal interactions, water parks, award-winning shows and thrilling rides. At SeaWorld San Antonio (the world’s largest marine life park), not only can you meet Shamu and feed the dolphins, but you can also see beluga whales, penguins, sea lions and more. Enjoy Aquatica, SeaWorld’s new new waterpark designed as a South Seas oasis with all the amenities of a beachside resort, including terraced pools, a giant wave pool, meandering crystal-blue rivers, sandy beaches and private cabanas. Aquatica boasts unique attractions such as up-close stingray encounters and a “weightless” family raft ride that’s a first for North America. Just down the road, Six Flags Fiesta Texas is kickin’ up a good time with more fun than you can pack into one day. Catch an entire ensemble of award-winning shows. Ride Goliath, the suspended roller coaster that brings their coaster count up to eight, catch a thrill on the new 20-story SkyScreamer swing ride that reaches up to 40 mph, and take a dip in the Texas-shaped pool at the White Water Bay water park. If you stay into the evening, there is a spectacular fireworks display sure to leave a twinkle in your eye. Designed specifically for individuals with special needs, Morgan’s Wonderland is the world’s first

18,000-square-foot special-events center, 575-seat amphitheater, picnic area and rest areas throughout the park. Families can cool off at Splashtown, a water park with 20 acres of attractions. Here, they will loop around the Siesta Del Rio, rock their cares away in the wave pool or shoot through miles of tubing fun! Just north of San Antonio, Schlitterbahn has been ranked the #1 water park in the world according to the Travel Channel. Located on the banks of the spring-fed Comal River, Schlitterbahn has tube chutes, water slides, uphill water coasters and more.

Shopping

San Antonio’s unique blend of art villages, marketplaces, outlet malls and chic retail spreads invites visitors to explore a shopping destination as rich and diverse as the city itself. Shopping with a view of the River Walk is available at Rivercenter Mall; take shopping outdoors at the Shops at La Cantera; or explore more than 200 discounted retailers at

the Prime and Tanger outlet malls. Kids especially love the largest pair of cowboy boots in the world, found right outside North Star Mall. Towering 40 feet high and 20 feet long, these boots are sure to kick-start a great time for every family!

Museums

Families enjoy nationally acclaimed museums including the Smithsonian-affiliated Institute of Texan Cultures, which tells the stories of the people and cultures that built Texas. Other notable museums include the McNay, which has a grand collection of French Impressionist pieces and the San Antonio Museum of Art, which offers the Nelson A. Rockefeller Center for Latin American Art—the largest repository of its kind. San Antonio also has museums that are totally kid-centric! Little ones can roam through a miniature model of San Antonio and see how your skeleton moves when you ride a bike at the San Antonio Children’s Museum—an interactive learning center where kids play to learn and parents learn to play. The nearby Witte Museum features scientific and historic exhibits like mummies and a dinosaur gallery. Also discover the Witte’s H-E-B Science Treehouse, which offers four levels of fun and experimentation with energy, air power, simple machines, eco-science, weather and sound waves. Here, children can try out the hands-on exhibits and see how science is used in the “real world.” www.thehotelguide.com

Outdoor Fun

Over 300 days of sunshine a year beckon families to enjoy the great outdoors. San Antonio sits on the cusp of the Texas Hill Country, a picturesque region that lures visitors with its beautiful terrain. Adventurers can tube or canoe down spring-fed rivers; fish, water-ski or sail at area lakes; and ride horseback across vast prairies and hike beneath the shade of stately live oaks. For many, San Antonio is the Paseo del Rio, an urban masterpiece better known as the River Walk. These cobble- and flagstone paths border the San Antonio River, 20 feet below street level, as it winds through culture-rich downtown. The River Walk has multiple personalities, quiet and park-like in some stretches, while other areas are full of activity with European-style sidewalk cafes, specialty boutiques, art galleries, theaters, high-rise hotels and more. River cruises are available and accompanied by knowledgeable guides who share stories of surrounding sites. Animal lovers should make time for the San Antonio Zoo. It’s the third largest in the nation with over 3,500 animals. Little discoverers can see rhinos and spider monkeys, visit the African Plains and Amazonia and peek under the sea at the aquarium. Nearby Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch is the perfect place for a safari. Here, over 500 animals from six of the seven continents roam free on a 400-acre 11

TEXAS nio River attract locals.

Culture

Here are a few great stops for circumnavigating the world in the Alamo City. Make a stop at Market Square, the largest Mexican market north of the Rio Grande. Here, a rich mix of family owned cafes, artists and merchants fill fountain-laden plazas with the bright colors and warm hospitality of the Mexican culture. Nearby, the Historic King William District was settled in the early 19th century by German immigrants who built mansions along a slow bend in the San Antonio River. Their culture lives on in their beautiful houses which have been reincarnated into galleries, cafes and museums. Then head over to The Southwest School of Art. Originally a 19thcentury French convent, it’s now a great place for lunch, shopping and gallery hopping.

Golf

With more than 50 courses and practice greens, San Antonio is the perfect golf destination for families. They can take a shot at Hill Country resort courses; make a round along the San Antonio River at Brackenridge, Texas’ most historic course; or test their swings at one of many greens nestled in limestone rock quarries. And with theme parks and attractions close by, there’s something for every member of the family in San Antonio.

Spectator Sports

In San Antonio, visitors can catch a basketball game almost all year long. The four-time world champion San Antonio Spurs heat up the AT&T Center October through June, while the WNBA’s San Antonio Silver Stars take over from May through September. If you’re in the mood for some peanuts and Cracker Jacks®, spend the evening with the San Antonio Missions. The Missions are the Double-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres, so fans get to watch these future stars of the baseball diamond vie for a spot on a big-league roster. Do some good while catching San Antonio’s North American Soccer League team, the San Antonio Scorpions FC, at their new Toyota Field. All net profits from the Scorpions, Toyota Field and nearby STAR (South Texas Area Regional) Soccer Complex are earmarked to help those with special needs through programs and activities at non-profit Morgan’s Wonderland. Prefer athletes on ice? When all the action gets too hot to handle, San Antonio Rampage ice hockey is definitely the coolest sport in town!

TEXAS

Texas BBQ Belt

Mmmmm.....

ome Texans debate barbecue the way others talk politics or football. With an abundance of world-class barbecue joints throughout the state and more popping up all the time, it could be said that the golden age of Texas barbecue has arrived. We’ve rounded up some of the state’s most famed barbecue joints for your eating pleasure.

S

Lexington, TX.

The small town of Lexington, about an hour east of Austin, is home to Snow’s BBQ. The spot seems unassuming, a red shack and some picnic tables, but its barbecue is anything but. Snow’s is only open on Saturdays from 8 a.m. till everything’s sold out, and pitmaster Tootsie Tomanetz and her crew start slow-smoking their meats at 3 a.m., ensuring a sumptuous feast. Lucky visitors get an opportunity to meet Tootsie, one of Texas’ great pitmasters. Although her brisket is mouthwatering, Tootsie believes her pork steak is her true specialty. Be sure to taste for yourself.

Austin, TX.

There’s a reason why customers, the press and even the President of the United States rave about Franklin Barbecue. Open since 2009, this East 11th

Street eatery lives up to the hype. Its menu features the usual spread of brisket, pulled pork, and other smoked meats, but the trick lies in owner Aaron Franklin’s attention to process. Every morsel is prepared with love, patience and an uncompromising commitment to quality, with the brisket slow-smoking for up to 15 hours. Arrive early, as a two-hour wait is common any day of the week. Anyone that’s eaten at Franklin’s can attest it is well worth the wait. Also located in East Austin is John Mueller Meat Co., founded by its namesake, a charismatic third-generation pit master. The John Mueller Meat Co. slings traditional smoked brisket, beef ribs, sausage, pork ribs and more from its trailer on East 6th Street. While you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu, when it comes to sides, the baked squash is second to none. Another Austin favorite is La Barbecue, which was founded by LeAnn Mueller, sister of John Mueller. Not to be outdone by her brother, LeAnn founded La Barbecue in 2012 and its ‘Cuisine Texicana’ received immediate success. The restaurant combines traditional barbecue flavors with a spicy kick, and the pulled pork moistened with a tangy

and Department of the Agriculture supervising the Presidential affair.

If you are looking for the barbecue capital of Texas, you’ll have to take a drive to Lockhart, which was designated asthe official state barbecue capital by the 76th Texas Legislature and is located just 40 minutes south of Austin. In Lockhart, BBQ standbys include Kreuz Market and Smitty’s Market, two establishments owned by siblings who founded their joints after the dissolution of the legendary original Kreuz Market. Each keeps the tradition alive with succulent, lean brisket and superbly smoked meats all around, and Kreuz eschews barbecue sauce altogether; that’s how confident they are in the taste of their meat. Other famous Lockhart barbecue joints include Black’s Barbeque, which was established back in 1932, and Chisholm Trail Barbeque, which was founded in 1978. One of Black’s Barbeque’s claims to fame is that in the 1960s President Lyndon Johnson asked Black’s to provide barbecue sausage for a meal at the U.S. Capitol. The sausage was prepared and flown into D.C., with the Secret Service

The Galleria area of Houston may be known for its shopping but it offers up some serious barbecue as well. Luling City Market is a local standby, and its smoky meat gets its flavor from a non-gas cooking process over post oak wood. Must tries are the Market’s beef sausage and special mustard-based barbecue sauce.

Statewide Winners

Texas’ barbecue belt is packed with destinations that would rank number one in any other state. Other iconic favorites include the Salt Lick, which is located in the town of Driftwood about half an hour south of Austin, Lockhart Smokehouse in Dallas, Angelo’s Bar-B-Que, a Fort Worth Institution, and Killen’s Barbecue in Houston. In Texas, it’s a hotly contested toss-up. Whether you’re a fan of pulled pork, fatty brisket or tender ribs, visitors’ mouths will be watering at any of these iconic eateries.

From elegant restaurants and hotels, to dinner with a view of the city atop the Tower of the Americas, to a riverboat tour of the Riverwalk at night, romance is everywhere in the Alamo City. For generations, couples young and old have headed for the winding, tree-lined River Walk for a hand-in-hand stroll laced with private hideaways and interspersed with lively nightspots. Now there are 13 more romantic miles of the San Antonio River to enjoy, thanks to a massive redevelopment project. The Museum Reach to the north offers access to beautiful Brackenridge Park and the Pearl Brewery. South from downtown lies the picturesque King William Historic District then the Mission Reach, an eight-mile section including four Spanish colonial missions. Exploring the UNESCO World Heritage Site

San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, whether by river, by bicycle or by car, is another wonderful way for couples to spend an afternoon.

The Gulf Coast

On the Gulf Coast, find yourself in a sea of love at the Moody Gardens in Galveston as you cruise into the sunset with your loved one aboard Colonel Paddlewheel. Enjoy an evening ride on the water complete with a dinner buffet and a DJ. Later in the evening, let your hair down, kick your shoes off and share a little quiet time with your sweetheart with a sunrise picnic on the beach. Galveston Island boasts some of the most spectacular sunrises in Texas. And, with 32 miles of beaches, finding the perfect patch of sand to sink your toes in is easy to do! For active couples, take a romantic bicycle ride through the island’s picturesque East End Historical District while discovering The Galveston Tree Sculptures. The magnificently carved sculptures were transformed from trees destroyed during Hurricane Ike and can be found nestled in the gardens and back-

yard areas of many restored historic mansions on the east end of the island It should be no surprise that Texas’ largest city, Houston, has plenty of options for a couple’s weekend. Start the weekend with one of the most romantic spots in town, the Rainbow Lodge. Housed in a 100-year-old log cabin on lush grounds just minutes from Downtown, the decadesold spot is charming and intimate, with cozy fireplaces and a meandering deck that looks out on a nearby creek. Later, venture outside for a scenic stroll through one of Houston’s parks and greenspaces, the Williams Waterwall where you can have your picture snapped in front of the formidable fountain or catch a midafternoon nap under shady Oak trees. If you have time, the nearby Houston Arboretum and Nature Center is worth a visit as it is home to five miles of hiking paths that wind through the western edge of Memorial Park. Satisfy your culture craving in Houston’s picturesque Museum District. Find glittering gems and jewels on show at the Houston Museum of Natural Science, new works at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston and more than 63,000 pieces at The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

Austin, TX.

The Lone Star State’s capital city is one of the most scenic in the Lone Star State. Set amid the rolling hills of the Texas Hill Country, Austin features some of the best in cuisine, hotels and resorts. Those looking for a quiet getaway outside the main hub of Austin should try the Barton Creek Resort or Lake Austin Spa & Resort. Treat yourself and your significant other to an hour-long cruise on Lady Bird Lake under the stars and the views of glittery Downtown Austin followed by a delicious dinner at Tyson Cole’s restaurant, Uchi. www.thehotelguide.com

TEXAS Additionally, the Blue Starlite Drive-in shows great movies, old and new -- and you can drive, bike, or sit in the lot. Plus, not only can you order East Side Pies directly to your car, and bring your own little picnic, but they also sell s’mores kits and provide fire for perfect s’more creation. For couples looking to take their love to new heights, check out the highest point within Austin’s city limits, Mount Bonnell. Not only does the site offer fantastic sunset views of Lake Austin and the 360 Bridge, it is said that if a couple climbs the 100 stairs to the top of Mount Bonnell once, they fall in love; twice, they’ll become engaged; and after three times, it’s inevitable they’ll get married!

Fredericksburg, TX.

Wine and dine your love in Fredericksburg, the heart of Texas Wine Country and home to some of the oldest wineries in the state. Fredericksburg cultivates more than half of the world’s grape varietals and is located just a short drive west of Austin and San Antonio. The quaint town includes notable wineries such as Fall Creek Vineyards, whose wines are featured throughout restaurants in Texas and New York, and Becker Vineyards, whose 2013 Provencal won a double gold medal at the 2014 San Francisco International Wine Competition. Medical Travel:101

What Patients Should Know Before Departure

by: Laura Carabello bout seven million people travel abroad each year seeking care related to everything from dental work and weight-loss surgery to cancer treatment, according to Bloomberg Business. A growing number of companies now offer a medical travel benefit, enabling employees to access high quality, more affordable care, whether abroad or in another U.S. state.

A

The Pulse of Medical Travel

· · ·

Here’s a look at the top five medical destinations in the world: 1. Thailand Thailand provides access to major procedures that are 50 to 70 percent cheaper than in the U.S. 2. Mexico Mexico attracts more than one million visiting patients each year, many of whom seek dental work and weight-loss surgery. 3. United States The nation’s medical Centers of Excellence (COE) offer high quality, more affordable surgical procedures than what is typically available locally. 4. Singapore Singapore offers 22 facilities certified by the Joint Commission International, the U.S.-based quality and safety accrediting organization. 5. India India is known for offering high-difficulty operations, such as coronary artery bypass graft surgery, at 90 percent less cost than in the U.S. Before traveling for care, employees should make sure they have a full understanding of: • Financial incentives – These should not limit the diagnostic and therapeutic alternatives that are offered to patients or restrict treatment or referral

options. • Medical Center – The hospitals should be accredited by recognized international accrediting bodies, such as the Joint Commission International. • Prior to Travel – Make sure that local follow-up care has been coordinated and financing arranged to ensure continuity of care. • Rights – Employees should be informed of their rights and legal recourse before agreeing to travel, especially if traveling outside the U.S. • Medical Records – Make sure that when medical records are transferred they meet Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Action (HIPAA) guidelines. • Risks – Employees should have a full understanding of the potential risks of combining surgical procedures with long flights and vacation activities. Medical travel is a win-win for employer and employee alike. It’s a way to access the best possible care – no matter where it is located – at reasonable prices, even when the expense of travel, including airline and accommodations, are taken into account.

A member of the National Registry of Historic Places, this downtown landmark is in the heart of the vibrant Power and Light (P&L) district, just steps from Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, Bartle Hall Convention Center and numerous restaurants, bars, shops and entertainment venues. “P&L has quickly become one of the Midwest’s premier cultural and entertainment hotspots, and Hotel Phillips Kansas City is an ideal destination for visitors looking to enjoy this thriving cornerstone of downtown,” said Mark Nogal, global head, Curio – A Collection by Hilton. “With its Art Deco charm, exquisite dining choices and idyllic history, Hotel Phillips is exactly what Curio guests are seeking – a unique, memorable hotel that offers distinct and authentic travel experiences.”

Unique Art Deco Opulence

The hotel opened in 1931 as the tallest building in Kansas City. It quickly gained national recognition for its stunning and opulent Art Deco lobby, featuring elaborate bronze and nickel metalwork, walnut paneling, stylized light fixtures, gleaming marble walls and a black-glass ceiling that creates the illusion of endless space. The building’s multimillion dollar transformation preserved those unique designs, as well as the gilded 11-foot sculpture of Dawn, known as the Goddess of Hospitality, which stands watch over guests as they enter. Following the renovation, each guest room, suite and executive room blends the traditional ambiance of the Hotel Phillips with the most modern amenities. Select rooms feature distinctive décor, such as a canopy bed with oversized headboard or an upgraded restroom with a claw footed tub.

ew Orleans has quickly become one of my favorite cities. The city’s charm and great food draws me back over and over. During my last trip, I chose to stay with The Bourbon Orleans Hotel a hotel of the New Orleans Hotel Collection. It’s an elegant and historic luxury hotel with a staff and service that makes you feel like you’re among friends. Located in the French Quarter, the boutique hotel is a charming place that has an alluring past. From the minute I walked in I knew my stay would be ideal. Met at the curb by a kind and humorous staff, I was quickly led through check-in and right to my gorgeous room. With several room types to choose from, I chose a King room overlooking the beautiful pool courtyard. The unique slatted, half moon windows gave the room a wonderful aura. The luxurious bed made my nights unbelievably comfortable and hard to get out of in the morning! I’m a firm believer that the service a hotel offers can make or break a visitor’s experience regardless of how beautiful the accommodations are. The Bourbon Orleans excels far beyond expectations. Each member of the staff was eager to go out of their way to make sure my stay was perfect. From the front desk to the chambermaids, everyone met me with a smile and made sure I had all I needed for a perfect stay. The hotel boasts a really great bar called Bourbon O with live music on certain nights and a great staff that will keep you enthralled with local ghost stories and spot on advice for places to get Olean’s famous eats.

N

www.thehotelguide.com

The pool area with deck chairs, umbrellas, and towel service is inviting. It’s a comfortable place to spend a hot day or sit in the evening with a drink or chit chat with friends. The Hotel offers its guests free Wi-Fi and an outstanding onsite restaurant, Roux on Orleans, where you’ll find a great breakfast to start your day, great choices for lunch, dinner, or a late night snack in your room. Definitely try their Southern Pulled Pork Sandwich….to die for!!! The Bourbon Orleans is located close to some of New Orleans great sites. A short walk to Café du Monde is a must and is literally a couple of blocks away. As is the famous Cathedral, great tour companies, and eateries. The hotel is also a beautiful site for a wedding as it’s elegant and newly restored interior makes for a gorgeous setting and pictures. I would highly recommend the Bourbon Orleans when visiting New Orleans; it’s a perfect home base while exploring the French Quarter, getting away for a romantic evening, or enjoying a girl’s get-a-way.
