Downs

Message from Terri Mauldin ... Welcome to the summer issue of the Down Syndrome Association’s newsletter! Summer is in full swing with lots of events, changes, and additions to the DSASTX. The Spring Picnic was held on Sunday, May 19th and was a huge success! We had over 300 people attend, and everyone had a wonderful time. I want to thank Toyota Texas for sponsoring the event, Jack Faour and Richard Buford for doing all the grilling, the exhibitors that provided the games and activities for the guests, and all the families that came out to enjoy a wonderful day. On Saturday, June 8th, the 10th Annual Audrey’s Day at the Beach was held in Rockport, Texas. Yes, the Shockley family has hosted this event for 10 years - hard to believe! There were many families that attended this awesome event and enjoyed sun, water, food, and tons of fun. Thank you again to the Shockley family and all the volunteers in Rockport! Bill, Jackie, Ray, and Aggie always host a wonderful event enjoyed by all! Don’t forget, the Buddy Walk will be held on Saturday, September 28th at Heroes Stadium. The Buddy Walk registration site is open and ready for team registrations and donations. We are asking everyone that has registered or donated in the past to PLEASE use your login information from last year. For more information, please see the article later in this newsletter.

I hope you take a moment to read the newest section of our newsletter, Self-Advocate News by Jessaca Bond. Jessaca is a self-advocate that serves on the DSASTX Board of Terri Mauldin Directors. She will write an article from her point of view for each issue! Please read her very first article and help me thank Jessaca for her continued support and vision for the DSASTX. As you can see, we are busy, and hopefully we are providing the best support and services to individuals with Down syndrome. They are our inspiration and make our jobs so enjoyable! In order for us to be as efficient as possible, I am going to please ask everyone to call the DSASTX office if you plan to attend any of our events. At most of our events, we provide food and refreshments and we base the purchase of these items on the number of people who have RSVP’d. We also understand that plans can change after you have called the office, so please try to contact us to let us know that you will not be able to attend so we can adjust our numbers and not purchase unnecessary items. I hope everyone enjoys the rest of your summer, and I look forward to seeing everyone at the Buddy Walk on September 28th.

D.A.D.S.

Dads Appreciating Down Syndrome, or D.A.D.S., is a committee or community group (within a local Down syndrome support organization) of fathers of children who happen to have Down syndrome. We hesitate to call ourself a “support group”, even though we do, in many ways, support each other. We invite expert speakers to discuss medical, educational, financial, social, and any other issues that affect our children’s lives. And of course, we share stories and experiences that are unique to fathers of children with Down syndrome. SATURDAY, JULY 20 – MORGAN'S WONDERLAND Father/Child day at Morgan's Wonderland Dads pack a lunch and bring the kids out for our father/child day at Morgan's Wonderland. 9:30 a.m. checkin. 11:30 a.m. gather for lunch in the picnic area to the right behind the Event Center. Keeping Up With Downs

Meet David

Our first son, David, was born July 31, 1991. It was not long after his birth that he required oxygen and began a downward spiral that required a 16-day stay in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit. David had persistent fetal circulation along with other heart defects. He was transported by Air Life to a facility that had “ECMO”, a special heart-lung bypass machine. David was hooked up with more tubes and wires that seemed to completely cover his little body. At this point we were told to wait and see what would happen. With God’s David Berube grace, prayer, and the miracles of modern medicine, David showed slight improvement, and did not require “ECMO”, but remained on a ventilator. Day by day his condition improved and on day 17 of life he was allowed to come home. The journey was not easy for him, but he continued to improve while meeting new obstacles. At the age of 6 months, David began therapy at the Brighton School in San Antonio. He received therapy to help core development and motor skills. He began walking with a walker at 3 years of age, and at this point, he started public school. He was enrolled in the Pre-school Program for Children with Disabilities at Brauchle Elementary where he attended for 7 years. Within 6 months of starting school and seeing all the other kids walking and running, David was able to begin walking on his own. Soon afterward, David was participating in Special Olympic events to include the 50 meter dash and standing long jump. What an accomplishment for a child that required a walker! When David was 7 years old he became very sick. Nothing he ate agreed with him, and he was losing weight. After several weeks of tests and many trips to the doctor, David was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. After the diagnosis was made, we learned that David needed to be on a gluten free diet. Within 6 months of putting him on this special diet, his recovery was no less than remarkable. His health improved rapidly and again he was a happy and active child. David meticulously sticks to his gluten free diet and is able to discern which foods are “safe”. Thanks to a very special instructional assistant, David learned all the letter sounds and now reads quite well. Thank God for those “special” teachers. In 2006 David attended Sandra Day O’Connor High School and was in several inclusion classes: keyboarding, nutrition, horticulture, and spanish. David did well and

6

DSA

made many friends, as one of his God-given talents is his social abilities. In 2008 O’Connor began their first AFJROTC program. We approached the instructor about David participating in JROTC; he enthusiastically said “SURE!” David did well in the program, thoroughly enjoyed the military background, and was very proud to wear his uniform. David attained the rank of Major and was appointed as the Unit Chaplain; he was an inspiration to his underclassmen. He would stand at the podium on stage in front of a packed auditorium during change of command ceremonies and at the military ball to recite commencement prayers. Many times his fellow cadets would congratulate him on his performance telling him that they could not have done it. He was also a member of the Color Guard where on several occasions he was asked to carry the American flag at football games and other functions requiring presentation of Colors. David continued to participate in Special Olympics during his high school years. He is proud of his medals and awards; not bad for a guy that could not walk when he started school. In 2010 David graduated from high school and moved on to the Nellie Reddix Center where he continued to learn life skills and trade skills to include culinary arts and working at local job sites. This was a great experience for him as he developed lifelong skills. David wants to be independent, find a job, and someday live on his own. In March 2012, his training began in Mixed Martial Arts. David has been training 2 hours a day 4 times per week in Brazilian Ju Jitsu. He simply enjoys it because it helps to keep him fit. The training has also helped his balance, concentration, and ability to focus. He has competed in tournaments and done well on his level. David is currently a yellow belt and was recently promoted to assistant instructor for the Special Needs Program at the Dominion Martial Arts Academy in Helotes where David trains. His social skills are truly one of his greatest assets. David enjoys people, and people enjoy David. His favorite pastimes are music, dancing, and eating. He spends hours on his computer arranging music on his iPod and recording CDs. He truly enjoys grooming himself and takes pride in his appearance. He is very meticulous about his clothes, jewelry, and all of his possessions. David is very helpful around the house. He maintains his own clothes, cleans house, does dishes, empties trash, and feeds his dogs. David has a younger brother who is very proud of him and loves to tell others of his brother's accomplishments. David has been a true gift to our family. He has a gift of communicating with the elderly, those in need, and all kinds of pets. He is patient and thoughtful beyond his years. We cannot imagine having to live a day without David, as he has been a blessing to us and to all that meet him.

Gabby's Moment Educational I just read one of the greatest quotes I have ever seen. “It's OK to grieve the child that you thought you were going to have, because in grieving that, it helps you to celebrate the one that you've been given.” I had that chance recently to celebrate one of the greatest moments in my daughter Gabriela’s life. On February 16, 2013, Gabriela was crowned the 2013 Fiesta Especial Page. As I watched my baby girl walk out on stage by herself and receive her sash and crown, I thought to myself, “There isn’t anything she can’t accomplish.” It has truly been an adventure serving on the 2013 Royal Court. We received invites to all types of events and were able to meet Royals for every court. Our personal favorites were King Rey Feo and King Antonio. Along with meeting Royals, Gabriela was able to collect Fiesta Medals to add to her scrapbook to commemorate her year on the 2013 Royal Court. Below are a few special moments we would like to share from the different events we attended.

Self-Advocate News Volunteer Highlight By Jessaca Bond Hi! My name is Jessaca Bond. I am a self-advocate on the Down Syndrome Association of South Texas Board of Directors. I have always had an interest in wanting to help other people like me. This article is my first attempt at sharing information that may be helpful or of interest to the Down syndrome community in general. I hope to contribute to each quarterly newsletter.

Paul “Trey” Edwards is currently volunteering with the Adult Continuing Education (ACE) program at the DSASTX. He tutors Phillip Montalvo 90 minutes weekly in reading and math. Reviewing his application and references, we quickly discovered what a busy young man Trey is. He currently attends UTSA where he has been president and national council board member of Alpha Chi (a top 10% honor society) and national council student representative for Region 1. If this were not enough, he has also worked as a paramedic for the last 5 years and is currently applying for Dental School, as well! Jessaca Bond

I have been a board member for the past three years and really enjoy it. I like volunteering, learning new things, and making a difference in my community. My hobbies are photography, reading, and listening to music. I would like to reach out to my peer group especially; if you have any comments or suggestions that you would like to share, please feel free to email me at caseybond@ earthlink.net. On June 8, 2013, my family and I drove from San Antonio to Rockport beach for Audrey’s Day at the Beach. This event is open to all families in the Down syndrome community. It is put on by Audrey's family to honor her memory, as she was with them only a short while. The drive was very long, but it was worth it! There were many activities: fishing, swimming, and kite flying to name a few. They also served a wonderful lunch of BBQ brisket, potato salad, beans, and cole slaw. If you want to go, you should make reservations for a hotel for the weekend because the activities start at 8:30 in the morning. Many families make a weekend adventure of it. If you have a young family with kids, I would recommend this to you!

Born in Bryan, Texas, Trey was involved in sports and volunteered for the Buddy Walk in College Station which led him to volunteer for the DSASTX Buddy Walk last year. When asked about his involvement with those with Down syndrome, Trey says that he feels blessed to be around such happy people. All of this led to his work with the ACE tutoring program, and we are very happy to have his enthusiasm as a volunteer. Trey quickly developed a great relationship with Phillip, and with his help, Phillip is now able to read his first book through a special reading program designed for non-readers. He is also progressing in math skills and is learning to use the calculator. Trey thoroughly enjoys the tutoring experience and would like to add another student once his schedule settles down. In addition to tutoring duties, he stays to clean the tutoring area; he definitely goes beyond the call of duty! It’s a pleasure to have such an exceptional tutor volunteer as part of the ACE program! We are always actively searching for volunteers for the ACE tutoring program. If you would like to volunteer as a tutor for one of our adults with Down syndrome, we welcome you! Please contact Oralia Lara at olara@dsastx.org for more information.

On June 11, 2013 I attended a legislative breakfast. The host was the San Antonio Nonprofit Council. The guest speaker was Representative Joaquin Castro. He talked about what is going on in Washington, D.C. He also talked about a bill called the A.B.L.E. Act that could help people with disabilities be able to save more money for themselves for their future. Congressman Castro is co-sponsoring this legislation. If you would like to learn more about this, you could contact Congressman Castro or your representative. I really enjoy doing this. I hope it’s informative and enjoyable to read.

2014 Inaugural Gala March 20, 2014

In honor of the Gordon Hartman Family Foundation Gala Chairs - Maria & Pete Hey

The Fiesta Especial® Royal Court gives children and adults with disabilities the opportunity to be in a highly visible position among other community leaders during the Fiesta® celebration. The court spends about two months visiting local schools, hospitals, senior care facilities and a number of events in support of other Fiesta® programs. Following their reign with Fiesta Especial®, court members are invited to participate in 4 additional community service projects throughout the year. Their role as court members is to represent individuals with disabilities in the public eye, representing one segment of the wonderful and diverse tapestry of individuals that make up the culture, heritage and community of San Antonio. For more information on how to get involved with Fiesta Especial® or the Royal Court, you can visit www.FiestaEspecial. com.

The Fiesta Especial® Royal Court is an opportunity to help create visibility for the leadership and contributions that individuals with disabilities make in our community each and every day. Now in its third year of operation, the Fiesta Especial® Royal Court experience continues to develop and blossom. In 2013, the Fiesta Especial® Royal Court members raised over $16,600 which went to programs and services for children and adults with disabilities, as well as to help underwrite the cost of local school children from special education programs to attend the Fiesta Especial® event for free as part of the City of San Antonio’s Fiesta® celebrations in April.
