Message from Terri Mauldin ... One again, the Buddy Walk on September 25th was a huge success! It is hard to believe that this was our 10th year! We had over 4,000 participants join us at Heroes Stadium as we celebrated the lives of those with Down syndrome whom we love with a lot of enthusiasm, joy, and style! Thank you to all the volunteers, donors, families, and the DSA staff for making the Buddy Walk so successful. Please take a minute to read all about the great events within this newsletter. During the past few months, we have had quite a number of things going on for the Down syndrome community, as well as the DSA. Our monthly social activities continue to bring many children and adults together along with their families. Please watch your emails and mailboxes for reminders of upcoming events and be sure to call or email the DSA office to RSVP for all our events. On Wednesday, Oct. 6th, President Obama signed into law “Rosa’s Law”. This law will change references in federal law from mental retardation to intellectual disability, and references to a mentally retarded individual to an individual with an intellectual disability. This is a huge accomplishment for those we love with Down syndrome, and I would like to thank all the families that wrote letters to their respective representatives to help get this law passed. Congratulations to all of you! On Saturday, Oct. 9th, the 1st Annual Hoot N Holler event was held in New Braunfels at Freiheit Country Store. This wonderful fundraising event
helped raise funds for the New Braunfels branch, so that we may expand to help support all the families in Comal and Guadalupe counties. I want to thank Stephanie Anderson for all Terri Mauldin her hard work along with her terrific committee of friends. They sure know how to put on a party and raise money for a great cause! We can’t wait for next year’s event! We have added another board member to the DSA Board of Directors! Dennis Johnson joined the board in August and will serve as a member at large. Dennis works for the Army Residence Community and has been an active volunteer with Special Olympics. He has a true passion for those with Down syndrome, so we are extremely excited that he has chosen to help the DSA as a board member! Welcome, Dennis! Please plan to join us on Tuesday, December 21st for the annual DSA Holiday Party at La Villita Assembly Hall. We will have food, drinks, music, visits with Santa, and raffle prizes. Annual Holiday Party!
Please join us for the annual DSA Holiday Party on Tuesday, December 21 • 6 - 8 p.m. La Villita Assembly Building (main floor) • 401 Villita, San Antonio, TX 78205 FREE parking will be provided with a parking ticket which is available at the DSA office. We have planned a wonderful evening including a barbeque meal, as well as hot dogs for the kids. Santa will be there to hear what’s on your holiday wish list. Our incredible DJ will be there, as well, so make sure to wear your dancing shoes. Due to the late date of this year’s event, we will NOT be accepting unwrapped toys; however, we are hoping each family will donate one special toy directly to Elf Louise or Blue Santa. Pictures will be taken with Santa and available for purchase through the DSA website. Please RSVP by December 10th with the number of adults and children that will be attending to Nana Knowles at 210-349-4372 or email nknowles@dsasa.org. We appreciate your timely RSVP, as we must confirm the number of meals being catered. You must make arrangements to pick up or request us to mail your parking ticket prior to Friday, Dec. 17th.

Keeping Up With Downs
Buddy Walk 2010 Once again, the Buddy Walk was a TREMENDOUS success! We had over 4,000 participants come walk on a beautiful sunny, but hot day! Because of you, the families and friends of children and adults with Down syndrome, we raised over $130,000 for the Down Syndrome Association of San Antonio and the National Down Syndrome Society. This money will go to help support the many programs and services that are provided by the DSA and assist the NDSS in their research, advocacy, and education initiatives. This event would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of the Buddy Walk committee. We also require a large number of volunteers at the walk to make it a success. So, THANK YOU to all the committee members and volunteers.
After the walk, the participants enjoyed a wide array of festivities. There were moon bounces, face painting, arts and crafts, basketball hoops, banner making and, of course, the train ride provided by Faith Train #7. The wonderful sounds of great dance music were provided by DJ Richard Hughes, from Baby Huey’s. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the following exhibitors who displayed their services to the special needs community: Unicorn Center, Kids Yoga Therapy, Reece’s Rainbow, Bandera Dental Care, The Dinner Garden, Achievers Center for Education, ARC of San Antonio, A Plus Pediatrics Rehabilitation, The Speech and Language Center at Stone Oak, Eva’s Heroes, Allstate Insurance, Rehab Association, Auburn Dental, Ability Pediatric Therapy, Therapy 2000, CAMP CAMP, Discovery Toys, Respite Care of San Antonio, Research Down Syndrome, Spurs Sports & Entertainment, American Income Life, Kinetic Kids, PerryLee Home Health Care, New York Life Insurance, San Antonio Children’s Museum, and Lifetime Living Inc.
We would like to congratulate the participants that were the winners of some awesome prizes! Aiden’s All Stars (Aiden Williams), Nate’s Net (Nathaniel Fritsche), and 3D (Micheal Cole) were each winners of a VIP canopy, a goody basket and a team banner for being the top team fundraisers. Kira Williams was the Top Fundraiser and won a 2-night stay at the Westin La Cantera Resort, and Micheal Cole was the 2nd Place Fundraiser and will receive the registration fee for the 2011 National Down Syndrome Convention to be held here in San Antonio! This was our first year to be at Heroes Stadium. The venue was a wonderful location with its wide expanse of space. Thank you to Irl Kincaid from the North East Independent School District for allowing us to use the facility. We can’t wait to be at Heroes Stadium again next year! A special thank you goes to Jack Riccardi, KTSA Radio Personality, for serving as our Master of Ceremonies once again. Jack is a strong supporter of the DSA, and we look forward to having him help us every year! We were extremely honored to have Gordon and Morgan Hartman serve as our Honorary Buddies. Thank you, Gordon and Morgan, for making our morning very special! We would also like to thank Councilman John Clamp; Bexar County Commissioner Tommy Adkisson; Miss Teen Texas Sydney Datcher; Mrs. San Antonio Angela Firkins; Mrs. Central Texas Cynthia Hinojosa; Mrs. Texas Natalie McLarty and the Spurs Coyote for coming to the walk and showing their support. The Buddy Walk would not be the same without the Johnson High School JROTC Color Guard presenting the colors. Thank you to Anthony Carnes for singing the National Anthem. Of course, we loved having the children from Kinetic Kids warm all of us up for the walk with their incredible cheer and dance routines. After the opening ceremonies, Gordon, Morgan, and the Coyote, with the help of the Johnson High School cheer team, started the one-mile walk around Heroes Stadium. 2

The year is winding down, and the Outreach Program has been very busy meeting new families and new babies! It is always exciting to see the new babies and to provide their parents, grandparents and siblings with the support and information that is so important to raising a child with Down syndrome.
The Teen Club is open to all teens with any disability between the ages of 13 and 17. The goal of the Teen Club is to foster friendships, stimulate socialization, and increase positive self esteem. Chaperones will be in attendance at each event. The cost of Teen Club events will be covered by the DSA for the teen and one special needs, age-appropriate friend. Support Groups SAN ANTONIO PARENT SUPPORT GROUP by Mendy Roberts - Parent Support Group Director Our monthly meetings of the Parent Support Group are designed for parents, grandparents, siblings, and friends of children with Down syndrome. The meetings begin at 6:30 p.m. with introductions and announcements, followed by insightful information from a guest speaker from 6:45 - 7:45 p.m. Participants have the opportunity to share experiences and concerns with others from 7:45 - 8:30 p.m. The meetings are held at Coker United Methodist Church, 231 E. North Loop Road, south of Bitters off U.S. 281 North. Childcare is available at no cost; however, reservations are required by calling 210-494-3455 x245 at least 48 hours in advance. Please leave a detailed message when making a reservation. Out of respect to our speakers, we ask that all children over the age of two be left in childcare. Meet Aaron
Meet Aaron Shayne Anderson Aaron was scheduled to arrive on June 8th, but in the first of many surprises, he decided to join us on June 1, 2009. We had an exciting middle of the night drive to the hospital and welcomed our long-awaited son while grinning from ear to ear. Several hours later, a pediatrician informed us that the hospital nurses suspected Aaron had Down syndrome. We sat there stunned and in disbelief. As the long two weeks passed, we found a way to completely deny the obvious. Finally, on June 15th we had the confirmation. Aaron has Down syndrome. We were entering a world that we were not familiar with and did not want to understand. We were lucky, though, since our tour guide of this new land was happy and healthy and glad to be here. Aaron gazed at us in amazement and wonder and from day 1 began teaching us lessons in love and faith and happiness. Aaron spent his baby year as any other baby would - eating, sleeping, playing and learning. He reached many milestones early or on time and, much to our amazement, was rolling over at three months! Of our three kiddos, Aaron was by far the most laid back and peaceful baby. We always feel that he knows something about life that we don’t completely understand! Aaron’s only hospital stay was a week for RSV in January. Once he figured out that the nurses would speak to him in a high-pitched baby voice, he was in heaven. He has been a ladies’ man from the very beginning! Now Aaron is 16 months old and trying to keep up with his big sisters, Allie Mae (5) and Ashlyn Irene (4). He is pulling up and trying to get the hang of walking. We can tell he really wants to be part of the daily action of the Anderson household. Aaron loves to eat so we have to monitor his intake or he will literally eat himself sick! He receives physical and speech therapy from ECI and, being the great sleeper that he is, often takes an extra-long nap on those days. He’s obsessed with a red shaky egg and a toy hammer, though his favorite activity is Kindermusik with Kat. As a gift from dear friends, we began enrolling Aaron in this music program at 6 months, and it has helped his development exponentially. He loves the interaction with other kiddos and claps and sways side to side with the music. Aaron is definitely developing opinions and coming into his own distinct personality. He screams “out” (sounds like “at”) when he is ready to get up in the morning and loves to make raspberries at people. If we are out and about, he will stare someone down until they look at him. He will then flash his bright smile and move on to the next person.

These are all just physical accomplishments. Aaron’s real gift has been the immediate transformation of hearts and minds in the group of extended friends in our community. Over the last year and a half, we have answered countless questions and tried to educate people as much as we can on the positive experience we are having raising our son. We feel blessed to have the chance to learn from Aaron and to be surrounded by such an amazing support group of family and friends. We are looking forward to seeing Aaron grow and achieve all of his potential. Although we are still learning and unsure of where we are going, our little Aaron will most definitely lead the way!
Adult Matters! by Julie Cheatwood - Adult Matters! Director
Adult Matters! is a social program specifically designed for our adults with DS ages 18 and older. The focus is on providing an environment to help them further develop their social skills, build friendships among other adults with DS, and offer them safe and appropriate interactions within the community. In order to foster that environment, we encourage them to invite an age-appropriate peer (another adult with special needs) to participate with them. DSA will pay the participation fee for both of them as well as a 1:4 chaperone ratio.We realize that our adults depend on family and friends for transportation to and from these activities, so we will always try to plan activities that offer a place where parents/guardians can gather nearby (restaurant, coffee shop, etc.) and visit with each other during the event. Meet Your Board LISA DROZDICK, SECRETARY by Tim McIntosh 1. How long have you lived in San Antonio? I have lived in San Antonio since 1999 with
my family; however, I lived here when I was a kid beginning in 7th grade and graduated from MacArthur High School. I was married at Randolph AFB. 2. Please tell me about your family and where you grew up? I am a military child so I lived in Alabama, Colorado, Alaska and Texas. I lived in West Virginia where I attended graduate school before moving back here. I am married to Keller Drozdick and have 2 kids, Hayley (12) and Aidan (9). My parents and sister also live in San Antonio. 3. Do you have a child with Down syndrome, or if not, what are your ties with the Down syndrome community? I do not have a child with Down syndrome. I am good friends with Bill and Patty Cade and have known Billy Jr. for 6 years. We have supported them and the DSASA each year at Buddy Walk. My first clinical experience was working with the adult day program at the San Antonio State School in the early ’90s in which several of the adult members were individuals with Down syndrome. Over the years, I have worked with several individuals with Down syndrome and their families and feel a strong tie to the DSASA. 4. Please tell me what you and your family like to do? We enjoy hiking, camping and spending time as a family. Reading is a particular shared interest though we also enjoy traveling and try to see as many sites within driving distance as we can. My son plays soccer and loves video games. My daughter participates in choir and is an avid reader. Both our kids are active in scouting, as well. 5. How do you want to help the Down Syndrome Association of San Antonio? I would like to help with the medical outreach program, helping doctors obtain the information and training to provide the best diagnosis and care to individuals with Down syndrome and their families. I also enjoy taking the notes at the meetings and keeping the group organized, at least on paper. 6. What do you think the goal of the Association should be? The main goal should always be the provision of social, educational, and support services to individuals with Down syndrome and their families. The social programs provided through the DSASA are amazing and provide so many opportunities for families and individuals to participate. I would like to see the adult tutoring program grow and become a vital part of the community, as well. 7. What do you see as the future for a Down syndrome child? I think the answer to this question would be different for each child. Each child has different interests and skills and possesses unique strengths. As we come to recognize individual’s strengths instead of focusing on weaknesses, I think each child will be able to reach their full potential. Unfortunately, many of the services and supports needed to help individuals with Down syndrome reach their full potential are not available or are only available to a limited number of individuals. This is changing, and I think the DSASA provides many of the services that are filling this gap.

Looking Ahead ... PLANNING FOR YOUR CHILD’S FUTURE . . . What Every Family of a Child with Special Needs Ought to Know Every parent worries about providing for their children over the course of their lives, and for parents of children with special needs, this feeling can often be even more acute. But because planning decisions can be difficult, families sometimes put them off, focusing instead on the many other challenges of daily life. Establishing an estate plan is an important step in ensuring that your loved one with special needs is taken care of for as long as they need support. This is true whether the child with special needs is still a minor or is now an adult. Planning is especially important when a child is receiving needs-based public assistance, or may require such benefits in the future. Every estate plan should include a will, selection of a guardian for minor children, assignment of financial power of attorney, and advance health directives. But, for families of a child with special needs there are many other things to consider when planning for the future, like where the individual will live, what their daily life will be like and who will care for them. Answering these questions requires a comprehensive planning process called special needs planning and will often include establishing a special needs trust. What is a Special Needs Trust? Special needs trusts, also known as supplemental needs trusts, can be set up as part of a will, but are more often set up as a living trust for the benefit of the individual with special needs. They are designed to preserve eligibility for public benefits while enhancing the quality of the individual’s life. The trust may be created separately from a family’s estate for tax purposes, and is managed by a trustee. Because the trust is usually established during the parent or primary caregiver’s lifetime, the parents, who most intimately understand the child’s particular needs, are typically the initial trustee. Establishing a special needs trust early on can be useful because they: • Allow the opportunity for other family members, like grandparents, to make contributions to the trust (if it is a living trust). • Many families do not know that an inheritance of as little as $2,000 can disqualify an individual from public benefits unless the inheritance is paid into a trust. • Establish a pattern of behavior to be used by future trustees, showing the expenditures that will be most useful to the special needs child.
Rules guiding the things for which a special needs trust may be used do exist. Special needs trusts are meant to supplement the public benefits for which the individual with special needs is eligible, that is, to pay for things beyond the basic needs covered by the government. Therefore, if funds from the trust are used regularly to purchase or pay for necessities, such as groceries, housing or utilities, those funds may count as income and, as a result, reduce or eliminate benefits altogether. However, funds from the trust can be used to pay for things like schooling, vacations, summer camp, home companions, electronics, such as computers and televisions, services like massage therapy, and social events. Establishing a Care Plan Many families will also want to establish a care plan. A care plan is set up by a family to make a future guardian or trustee aware of a child’s needs. A good care plan will explain the educational, social, financial and other needs of the individual with a disability as well as that individual’s capacity to attend to those needs on his or her own. No one knows a child better than his or her own parents and a care plan provides the opportunity to impart that knowledge to a future caregiver. A care plan should be updated periodically, and it should be kept with other trust and planning documents. A care plan may come in the form of a Letter of Intent. Consulting a Qualified Professional When deciding whether or not a special needs trust is right for your child, it is important to consult an attorney who is well-versed in the complex and ever-changing rules that govern this specialized area of estate planning. It is advisable to select an attorney who dedicates a significant portion of his or her practice to staying abreast of the state and federal laws relevant to special needs trusts. Once you select an attorney and schedule an initial consultation, the attorney will generally ask you to provide some basic information, like financial data, details about the family member’s disability, public benefits currently being received, or estate plans already in place. For your first appointment, you should bring copies of all relevant information that will help the attorney advise you as to whether or not a special needs trust is appropriate. If you do set up a trust, the attorney will also help you select a trustee or guardian who understands the details of the administration and taxation of a special needs trust, which can be complex. The cost of a special needs trust varies depending on where you live, the experience level of the attorney, the type of trust and the complexity of the trust design.

Estate planning can be overwhelming, but seeking out an expert to advise you is the first step in a process that will provide for and protect your child’s future, ensure he or she is taken care of according to your wishes, and give you the long-term peace of mind that every parent seeks.
Why is a Special Needs Trust Important? A special needs trust provides a lifetime of money management for a child with special needs, and ensures access to the services and care that child may need as he or she moves through various stages of life. Once a child turns 18, his or her income will be used to determine eligibility for public benefits such as Medicaid and Supplemental Security Income (SSI), food stamps, and housing assistance.

Her law office in Phoenix, Arizona focuses on the financial and legal needs of minor children with disabilities and adults with disabilities under age 65, with an emphasis on public benefits eligibility issues. She is a Specialist in Estate & Trust Law, certified by the State Bar of Arizona and has been certified as an Elder Law Attorney by the National Elder Law Foundation (NELF).
Receipt of too much income or having too much in resources will lead to the reduction or loss of these important benefits. But, funds paid into a special needs trust will not be counted as income, allowing the retention of public benefits.

The Eva’s Heroes After School Program provides an inclusive environment for individuals age 14-21 to interact and learn with their peers, helps adolescents and young adults increase their ability to function independently, and allows individuals to learn the value of teamwork. Enrolled participants receive priority for early registration in activities during Thanksgiving Week, Winter Holidays, Spring Break Week, and the Summer Enrichment Program. Eva’s Heroes offers recreational activities such as: arts & crafts, sports, cooking classes, group games, computer activities and reading. Transportation to Eva’s Heroes After School Program is provided by NISD for students who qualify for transportation as a related service in his/her IEP and attend one of the following: Hobby Middle School, Rawlinson Middle School, Rudder Middle School, Garcia Middle School, Stinson Middle School, Clark High School, Marshall High School, Brandeis High School. Benefiting Children & Adults With Disabilities
Pool Your Pennies is a collaborative fundraiser to convert a former YMCA pool into an ultra-accessible aquatic center for children and adults with disabilities. The aquatic center will be located at The Arc of San Antonio’s northwest campus, the Pam Stephens Center, at 6530 Wurzbach Rd. The goal of the Tile Campaign is to raise $163,000 by December 1, 2010 and complete the renovations for the ultraaccessible pool in time to open for aquatic therapy, recreation and sports programs by June 1, 2011.
