Dear Friends,
ST MARTIN’S CHURCH
EAST HORSLEY KT24 6RL
PART OF THE HORSLEY, RIPLEY, OCKHAM & DOWNSIDE GROUP MINISTRY
2024 has been a remarkable and fruitful year for St Martin’s, marked by many milestones and memorable moments. One of the year’s most significant highlights was the installation and dedication of our new COVID Memorial Windows, a moving tribute to resilience and remembrance. If you haven’t seen them, please make a point of visiting St Martin’s. We were delighted to see growing attendance across all our services and church activities, including Bible study breakfasts, Being With (an introduction to the Christian faith), coffee mornings, community lunches, and our summer BBQ. Our partnership with Horsley Live Music Club (Counterfeit Beatles) and Tenors UnLimited brought vibrant energy to the parish, with sell out audiences.
Another major achievement was the publication of our new Parish Development Plan, which lays the foundation for an exciting 2025. Among the initiatives we’re looking forward to is the opening of a Peace Garden, designed especially for our young people.
In line with our commitment to sustainability, we’re also exploring ways to enhance our eco-credentials by making further improvements to our church building and other initiatives.
The coming year promises even more opportunities for growth and connection. We plan to expand our Bible studies and faith
exploration programs while also preparing for the much-anticipated return of our popular Christmas Tree Festival—a fitting finale to what we hope will be another vibrant year in the life of our parish.
None of this would be possible without the dedication and generosity of our incredible volunteers. Many are regular worshippers, while others join us simply because they value our historic church and its role in the community. If you’re interested in becoming part of the life of St Martin’s, we’d love to hear from you. There are countless ways to get involved—please reach out, and we’ll be delighted to share more!
Please join our mailing list to keep informed about all our services and activities. Just send me an email and I will add you to the list.
I wish you and your loved ones every blessing for the year ahead.
Every blessing, Renos, Rector of East Horsley

Men who lunch
We all know that life is not always easy, but cooking simple real food can be. Getting together for a meal and a chat is a wonderful way to get out of the house to help look after our physical and mental health.
Local resident Edward Scott had the idea for Horsley Lunch Club for men when he was watching a cooking programme with Mary Berry visiting a community group that got together to cook and eat together. Talking to friends in the village he realised that many men were aware of their own lack of abilities - and especially those who found themselves in a carers role, or living alone wanted to improve their cooking skills and confidence.
At this new sociable lunch club no previous cooking experience is required. The group will work as a team to cook lunch - and then eat together. The recipe, cooking notes, ingredients and all of the equipment will be supplied, with a suggested donation of £4 for each session.
There are quite a few men’s cooking clubs across the country that have a special interest in pies - but having been able to reverse his own diagnosis of type 2 diabetes through small lifestyle changes, Edward wanted to encourage a broader repertoire of recipes as part of this club. The test kitchen menu was sweet and sour chicken, rice and broccoli - which worked out well for the trial team.
The Horsley Lunch Club for Men is about making friends, preparing, cooking and eating
healthy, tasty food that you can also easily repeat at home.
Come along to learn new skills in good company.
The club will initially meet once each month at the Wheelhouse, East Lane, West Horsley from 10am-1pm.
For more information or to join in call Edward: 01483 285394 or send an email: horsleylunchclubformen@gmail.com

Heritage Matters
The Horsley Heritage Group (HHG) was established in early 2024 as an initiative between the parish councils of East and West Horsley.
Group members include representatives of both parish councils and others with an interest in the heritage of the two villages. HHG seeks to illustrate and communicate the rich history of the two villages, not only in terms of their architecture and development, but also in terms of the legacies of the many families and institutions that have contributed to that rich history.
A number of projects have been launched by HHG including a document archive (taking over the archive set up by the Horsley Countryside Preservation Society); an application to Historic England for a blue plaque to commemorate Ada Lovelace at Horsley Towers; a scheme to erect Horsley Heritage blue plaques on selected heritage buildings across the Horsleys and a series of heritage walks that coincided with Heritage Open Days in September 2024.
The West Horsley Heritage walks were very well attended with a full house of
20 visitors for each walk - no mean feat given the narrowness of some of the local pavements! The walks started at Highbank, a medieval hall house with four bays dating from 1382 and then the Barley Mow (itself a 16th century two-bay hall house in origin). Various other heritage properties within the village were then visited before walking for a short visit to West Horsley Place and concluding with a guided visit to St Mary’s church in West Horsley.
The buildings selected for the Horsley Heritage blue plaques include a number of heritage properties in both villages of historic interest together with some buildings designed by Lord Lovelace and Frank Chown. HHG expects to continue and diversify the Horsley Heritage blue plaque scheme going forward so that the history of the two villages and their inhabitants is captured for posterity.
Time for a digital detox? The health benefits of unplugging in 2025
In our hyper-connected world, the constant barrage of notifications and screen time can take a toll on our mental and physical health. As we step into 2025, the idea of a digital detox is gaining traction. This break from screens offers many benefits that can enhance overall well-being.
Research shows that excessive screen time is linked to increased stress, anxiety, and disrupted sleep patterns. By unplugging, individuals can reclaim precious time and focus on activities that nurture the mind and body. A digital detox encourages engagement in face-to-face interactions, fostering deeper connections and reducing feelings of loneliness.
Additionally, stepping away from screens can revitalise creativity and productivity. Without the distractions of social media and constant notifications, one can engage in hobbies, read books, or explore nature—activities proven to enhance mental clarity and reduce stress.
Moreover, a tech timeout can improve sleep quality. The blue light emitted by screens interferes with the production of melatonin, the hormone responsible for sleep regulation. By limiting screen time, especially before bed, individuals can enjoy more restorative sleep, leading to better mood and cognitive function.
Incorporating regular device free periods into your routine can significantly enhance your overall quality of life. Whether it’s a day each week or a weekend retreat, the benefits of unplugging are clear: improved mental health, deeper connections, and a more balanced approach to life in 2025.

Jigs January
With Christmas and New Year now behind us, the next event that many celebrate is Burns Night on the 25 January. It is an annual celebration of Robert Burns, Scotland’s most famous poet.
Born on 25 January 1759 in the lowlands of Scotland, Burns was a tenant farmer who loved poetry, producing more than 500 poems, songs and letters throughout his life. Many of us will have heard, or sang ‘Auld Lang Syne’ when ringing in the New Year. The very first Burns Night was held by a small group of his close friends after his death, and over 200 years later some of the traditions of that night still exist today.
Here in Horsley there is a thriving U3A Scottish Dancing group, a lively group of folk who gather to better themselves at Scottish Country Dancing. The benefits are many: a good physical workout spinning around the floor; plenty of brain activity remembering the steps; and much laughter in the process. The group’s adopted motto is ‘Learn, Laugh and Live.’ A highlight of the group’s year is a January Burn’s Night evening of dancing, recitations with a wee drop of mulled wine and tasters of haggis, a delicacy renowned for its ‘unusual’ ingredients.
The group meets in The Community Hall on Forest Road on Wednesdays, fortnightly at 4.006.00pm from Sept-April. Beginners are always very welcome. If you would like to find out more or join the U3A Scottish Dancing group please email: scottish-dancing@horsleyu3a .org.uk
There will also be a community Horsley Burns Weekend Ceilidh on Sunday 26 January 2025, 7-10pm, East Horsley Village Hall. The Ceilidh Tree band bring their authentic folk sound and a great caller to help hold things together. Whether you’re ceilidh beginners or veterans, they will have you jigging along - an ideal warm up for January.

Paths with purpose
Across the UK we have over 91,000 miles of footpaths. Public rights of way that weave through our neighbourhoods and countryside are available for everyone to enjoy all year round and are used daily by many as they exercise, travel from home, or just seek to connect with nature.
Moving from one place to another is part of the natural rhythms of life. Many paths and roads we use today date back hundreds or thousands of years. Some of the oldest paths in the Horsleys include the Old London Road, an ancient packhorse route that runs from the Tillingbourne Valley to London and Great Ridings Wood, an ancient woodland that dates back to at least Saxon times, and possibly even older.
The route is thought to have been used by pilgrims for at least 1,000 years. For much of the way it follows the natural contours of the North Downs avoiding the clay-rich valley bottom and the thinner clay with flints on the summits. At times the route follows ancient trackways that date back to 600-450 BC.

Over the past year a group of Horsley walkers, under the umbrella of St Martin’s church, walked the Pilgrims Way, an old route covering 140 miles, that connects Winchester Cathedral in Hampshire to Canterbury Cathedral in Kent.
Until relatively modern times, no laws were passed to create public rights of way. Instead, the routes became accepted under the common law as having been public since time immemorial. The legal theory was that the landowner “dedicated” the ways as public: the public use being evidence of this. We are fortunate to have this wonderful network of paths, tracks and trails throughout the UK to enjoy all year round.
St Martin’s walking group plans to explore more local footpaths throughout all four seasons of this coming year – if you’d like to trail along with us do get in touch: walk@easthorsleychurch.org.uk
