Cranberry Mince Pies
A Christmas staple with a cranberry twist, can you avoid these magnificent mince pies?
1. Put the flour, icing sugar, butter and orange zest into a food processor and whiz to fine crumbs. Add the egg and whiz for a few seconds until the mixture forms clumps and you can press it together into a ball. If necessary, add a teaspoon or two of water to bring the mixture together.
2. Turn onto a very lightly floured surface and knead briefly until smooth. Wrap in cling film and chill for at least 30 minutes, or until firm.
3. For the filling, turn the mincemeat into a bowl and stir in the dried cranberries. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface to the thickness of a £1 coin. Using an 8cm fluted cutter, cut out 24 rounds and use to line two 12-hole non-stick mince pie tins.
4. Re-roll the trimmings to the same thickness and stamp out 24 stars or Christmas trees, with an appropriate cutter, for the tops. Put a dessertspoonful (2 tsp) filling into each pastry case, then press the tops in position. Chill for at least 20 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 180°C/Gas 4.
5. Brush the tops with the eggwash, then bake the mince pies for 15–20 minutes until the pastry is golden and crisp. Let cool for a few minutes before removing from the tins and transferring to a wire rack to cool. Store an airtight container, warming slightly before serving with a dusting of sugar.

• Grated zest of 1 orange
• 1 medium egg, lightly beaten
• 1–3 tsp ice-cold water (if needed)

• Icing sugar or caster sugar, to dust
REKINDLING LOVE FOR THE LIBRARY
As the nights draw in, it’s an ideal time to get back to reading more.
I was a lapsed library member. When I had young children it had been a haven on rainy days - even on sunny days. We always enjoyed a warm welcome and returning home with a clutch of new picture books. Library trips drifted away through the teenage years - but now with ‘children’ out into the working world, it seemed like the right season to renew my membership.
I turned up to the library one Tuesday afternoon and it was an easy process - all that was needed was one bit of ID with proof of address - and I was proudly presented with a new card for ‘My Library’. I got straight to work and borrowed two books about the Yorkshire dales - looking forward to a walking trip there in a few months time.
In Horsley we have an active group of supporters of the library - The Friends of Horsley Library. Judy Young is part of this group - if you love the local library and would like to join her as a ‘friend’ please email: horsleylibraryfriends@gmail.com
The member of staff encouraged me to download the Surrey Libraries app - which was easy to do and will be a useful tool for renewing books - but also allows you to order books (for a small charge) and holds plenty of information about other things going on at the library.
The library can process bus passes on behalf of Surrey County Council and also offers a digital buddy scheme for anyone who’s struggling with a technical problem on a gadget. There are some useful recycling bins for specialist items such as old reading glasses, make up, and batteries. Several book clubs around the village use the library to order their book choices. For young children and families there is a weekly storytime, a summer reading programme and occasional arts and crafts activities.

Tuesday: 10-1 and 2-5

Dear Friends,
It was a true delight to welcome Bishop Andrew Watson, Bishop of Guildford, along with many from our local community, to the dedication of our new stained glass windows. If you haven’t yet had the chance to see them, I encourage you to visit. St Martin’s is open to all from Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00am to 4:00pm.
November is often considered a time of remembrance, and acts of remembrance hold a special place in our lives. These rituals unite us, regardless of beliefs, religion, or social background. Therefore, I warmly invite anyone who is bereaved to join us for our “Time to Remember” service on Sunday, 3rd November, at 3:00pm. This annual service is a chance to honour our loved ones, light candles, and hear their names read aloud. We will share refreshments afterward.
On the following Sunday (10th November at 10:30am), we gather as a community for Remembrance Sunday, where we will give thanks for those who gave their lives in various conflicts and pray for those who continue to serve today.
Soon, we will also begin the season of Advent, anticipating the joy of Christmas. Along with our Christmas services (see next page for details), the Horsley, Ripley and Ockham Group Ministry will be hosting a special Christmas evening with the popular Tenors Un Limited
Tickets are available now.
I look forward to seeing you in the coming weeks.
Every blessing, Renos, Rector of East Horsley

Village Christmas
Horsley is a bustling community of village life - with much of that represented throughout this magazine through dedicated local businesses, thriving community groups and two parish councils that care passionately about promoting a strong culture of support for local life.
Throughout the year seasonal events are promoted on the Station Parade - from valentine love being shared around in February to ‘Pillage the Village’ each Hallowe’en. Many of the shops and businesses embrace the fun throughout the year, decorating windows and taking part in treasure hunts and quizzes.
The Annual Christmas Village event on the first weekend of December as the festive season
starts to get underway and coincides with “small business Saturday”, a campaign encouraging consumers to support small businesses.
This year, on Saturday 7th December, you are invited to come along to support village stores and all of the local stalls that will join together on the day. You can grab a mulled wine and feast on a Christmas bbq whilst listening to the choir to start to get you into the spirit of the season. You can collect your bag and lucky dip from Daisy Maison, visit the library to decorate gingerbread men with the WI, and visit Father Christmas in his grotto to say hello and get yourself an early Christmas gift. Walk through the village for a treasure hunt and visit the youth council on the small green to play games or enjoy face painting. Leave plenty of time to say hello to the Horsley, Bookham & Leatherhead Riding for the Disabled Association’s Christmas pony and make reindeer food.
Please visit East Horsley Parish Council website to sign your child up: it’s £5 in advance or £6 on the day. Some activities are a small additional charge. The event fundraises for two local charitiesCherry Trees and our local RDA as well as encouraging support for the village.

The Reverse Advent Challenge
Be Kind. Easy to say isn’t it? You’ll see it printed on t-shirts and posted everywhere on social media. But being kind isn’t an easy option – why (and how) should we be kind when the world around us is anything but?
Kindness makes us feel human, loved and cared for. Whether we are being kind, or on the receiving end of kindness, a kind act can be the bright spot in a tough day, a cause for a smile where there had been tears, an answer to a problem and a creator of connection where there had been isolation.
Agree?
It’s from a desire to teach our young about kindness that the Reverse Advent Challenge first began in Horsley almost a decade ago. Simply put, every day (ish) for a month, we ask you to collect an item of food, an everyday necessity, or a little luxury/treat, and on collection day we gather it all up and get it out through local foodbanks and agencies for distribution to people who do not have easy access to the things we sometimes take for granted.
Our aims are not only to help towards the mounting need which IS on our doorstep here in Horsley (just not very visible), but we also want to involve our young on the initiative so that as a community we build empathy and awareness.
It’s also a chance for us to come together and do something good. As anyone who has ever been involved will tell you –Reverse Advent Horsley makes your soul sing. It’s a lovely thing to watch someone (especially a child) bring a bag full of goodies that they have collected into the Wheelhouse (East Lane) on Collection Day.
Will you take part in Horsley’s Reverse Advent 2024?
From 1st November please start a collection box at your home, school, office etc. We have lists but think long-life foods and other items –cans, dried foods, drinks, sanitary and personal hygiene items and perhaps some luxuries.
Our community collection is on Saturday 30 November at the Wheelhouse – if you’d like to be involved with that let us know. It will all then be distributed to the recipients in time for Christmas.
All you have to do for now is decide to take part, make a note in your diary for the morning of Saturday 30th November, then follow us on facebook and/or twitter (we don’t do email!)
Bell ringing is one of those strange activities that sort of slips under the radar. It just, well, happens. I mean, we’ve all heard the bells. We know they’re linked to the church. We know what a bell looks like and that it has a dangly bit that hits the side. We might even have seen a photo or a video of people pulling on ropes with multi-coloured woolly bits that shoot up into the ceiling from time to time. What’s that all about?
Well, it appears that many people come to ringing because they are intrigued by this centuries-old skill. They like its archaic vocabulary, reminiscent of a by-gone age. Phrases like 'Tower Captain', 'Steeple Keeper', 'ringing a touch' and 'Stedman cinqs' (pronounced “sinks”.)
Younger ringers get involved for different reasons, maybe as part of their Duke of Edinburgh work or in a school band; possibly encouraged by a friend or relative; or just because they get intrigued by the bells and ringing
enthusiastic and dedicated band, always delighted to show visitors our bells, to explain how they work, to let them have a go and for our qualified teachers to train new learners. We’re even happy to travel to give talks on bellringing.
Phil Madden is Tower Captain at Ranmore. Contact him on ranmorebells@gmail.com to arrange a visit or to enquire about learning
People keep ringing because they find it fun to do. They relish its physical and mental demands. They like understanding how pulling the rope changes the swing of the bell so alters how the bell rings. They like giving regular public performances with other members of their band. They also enjoy the social contact which ringing provides and the opportunities to ring in one of the thousands of bell towers throughout the world where full circle bell ringing takes place.
Ranmore Ringing Centre At St Barnabas Church on Ranmore Common is passionate about ringing. We are an

Winter wildlife
As winter approaches, wildlife faces many challenges. Here are some practical tips to support wildlife in your garden this winter.
Food
Scarce in winter, providing a reliable food source can help the little visitors to your garden. Hang a bird feeder filled with seeds, nuts and suet, making it’s kept clean to prevent the spread of diseases. Scatter fruit like apples and berries on the ground for ground-feeding birds and mammals, and consider leaving out some kitchen scraps like cheese, unsalted peanuts and cooked potatoes.
Water
Shrubbery
The other vital part of sustenance… however water has an annoying tendency to freeze in winter, making it difficult for wildlife to stay hydrated. Therefore, place shallow dishes of fresh water in your garden and check regularly for ice. A birdbath with a small heater can also provide a constant source of liquid water, but remember to clean and refill the water sources daily.
Shelter
Crucial for wildlife to stay warm and safe, create log piles or leave dead wood in corners of your garden to provide habitats for insects and small mammals. Bird and bat boxes can offer safe roosting spots, and if you have hedges, avoid cutting them back in winter as they provide natural shelter and food.
Preserve leaves
Leaves and plant debris can be left on the ground to provide insulation and habitat for insects and small mammals. This leaf litter also enriches the soil as it decomposes, benefiting your garden in the long term. Avoid excessive tidying to maintain these natural shelters.
Native plants and flowers are better suited to the local climate and provide the right kind of food and shelter. Holly, ivy and hawthorn are excellent for providing berries and dense cover, while late-flowering plants like heather can provide nectar for pollinators during the milder winter days.
Chemicals
Pesticides and herbicides can harm wildlife, especially when food is already scarce. Opt for organic methods of pest control, such as encouraging natural predators and using barriers. You can help this along by letting your garden grow a little wild – this will provide a sanctuary for beneficial insects and birds that help manage pests.
Compost
Finally, a compost heap can provide warmth and food for many creatures. Hedgehogs, frogs and various insects benefit from the heat generated by decomposing plant material, so ensure it’s accessible but not too disturbed.
Supporting wildlife in your garden during winter is rewarding and vital for maintaining biodiversity. By making small changes and providing essential resources, you can create a haven for creatures great and small.
