Usually commencing between 45 and 55 years old, the menopause is considered to have occurred once 12 consecutive months have passed without a period. Early onset menopause (before 45) can occur and be due to underlying health conditions or hysterectomy.
The transition leading up to the menopause is known as the perimenopause. This is the gradual process of the ovaries slowing down due to declining oestrogen levels. The time this takes can vary from as little as a few months to years; the average being four. During this time, periods are likely to become lighter and irregular. This may be accompanied by other symptoms including, but not limited to, fatigue, hot flushes, mild to moderate depression and difficulty in sleeping.
A reduction in oestrogen can lead also to an increase in body fat and a decrease in muscle
mass, bone density, strength, and flexibility. The risk of sustaining a musculoskeletal injury and disorders such as osteoporosis (i.e. reduced bone quality) also increase.
Research has shown that exercise can play a vital role in improving the symptoms and the impact of menopause, with significant improvements seen in both physical and mental health. This includes less aches and pains throughout the body, better maintenance of bone density and mood.
Our clinic hosts regular exercise classes in the barn. For further information, please contact clinic reception or for anything more clinical, ask for a free discussion with one of our chiropractors.

I hope you all had a wonderful summer. As we transition into September, there are many exciting events to look forward to at St. Martin’s. Our journey begins with the Season of Creation, running from Sunday, September 1st, through to our Harvest Festival on Sunday, October 6th. This is a time to give thanks for God’s creation and to reflect on how we can best care for our environment. On Sunday, October 13th, Bishop Andrew Watson, the Bishop of Guildford, will visit to dedicate our new stained-glass windows. If you haven’t seen the windows yet, please do come and take a look.
This autumn we are offering several courses exploring Christian faith, inviting you to join us in conversation, whatever your starting point. These will include “Hymns We Love,” an informal exploration of the background of some of our cherished traditional hymns, or for those wishing to delve deeper we will be offering “Being With,” a 10-week exploration of Christianity. Additionally, for those interested in the historical contexts of the scriptures, we will host special Saturday morning study breakfasts. Do check our website and join our mailing list to keep up to date with dates and further news. There are some special evenings lined up in the church too. We are hosting a Beatles tribute night with our friends from Horsley Live Music Club. The Counterfeit Beatles will perform an acoustic set on Friday, September 27th.
For those who prefer classical music, we are delighted to welcome the Giocoso String Quartet, invited by The Friends of St. Martin’s, to
perform in the church on Friday, October 4th, at 6:00 PM. Tickets are available via the church website or at Bishopsmead Post Office.
Looking ahead - Tenors UnLimited will be returning to St Martin’s on Friday 13th December at 7.00pm.
We look forward to seeing you soon,
Every blessing,
Renos,
Rector of East Horsley
The mindful power of music
Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Dementia are neurodegenerative diseases that usually start slowly and progressively worsen, with the common early symptom being difficulty in remembering recent events, but as the disease advances, symptoms can include problems with language, disorientation, mood swings, loss of motivation and self-neglect.
For people living with AD and Dementia, music therapy can be a lifeline providing a beneficial interaction that has been shown to increase cognition and slow the deterioration of memory loss. Forms of music therapy are broad and can range from individual singing, to active participation in group music making or listening to songs individually.
Many of the activities in a class can be repeated at home offering a low-cost solution to help manage aspects of neurodegenerative diseases, especially low moods. The benefits can be great not only for the patient, but for the carer too - providing a shared activity where communication and connection is nurtured.
Val Marciano is a professionally trained vocalist and Music Therapist, training in her home country Italy and then further specialising in postpartum and community music therapy at City & Guilds in London. She has worked extensively with adults and children in a wide range of health settings and schools and has seen first hand the benefit that music can bring, strongly believing that this is a valuable way to take care of people with dementia,
creating a community around them to support their families and carers.
Val loves coming to East Horsley each week where she leads Music Memories, a free weekly music therapy class supported by St Martin’s church and volunteers.
If you think this might help someone in your family, why not give it a try.
Music Memories – the Dementia Music Therapy Group meets every Tuesday 10.30 to 11.30, in the Canterbury Rooms at St Martin’s Church, KT24 6RL

Social prescribing
There are many things that can affect physical and mental wellbeing. Some of these can stem from feeling lonely or isolated, being stressed about work, money or housing issues, or learning to cope with long-term conditions. Taking on or maintaining a carer’s role can also be difficult.
Social prescribing is a service offered through a number of GP surgeries, including The Horsley Medical Practice as a way to improve wellbeing. The service helps to provide you with the tools you need to improve your wellbeing by listening, and linking you in with community groups, new activities, or pointing you in the right direction to get the help you need. Our Social Prescribers have contacts for a number of community groups, activities and resources that they can signpost you to, and most importantly, take the time to listen to what really matters to you.
Diana Rang works locally as a social prescriber, along with her colleague Jasmine Moorey, taking referrals from the Horsley Medical Centre and also meeting people in the community through other initiatives such as the Leg Clinic – a new type of integrated healthcare, held each
week at East Horsley village hall where routine treatment for common lower-limb wounds, most often suffered by patients over the age of 75, is given in a friendly, supportive and holistic way removing the focus from solely dressing a wound to allow the social element of the club to be equally valued and part of a holistic model of care.
Through her work Diana enjoys chatting to people from all walks of life to help them identify areas of their lives where they may benefit from making some positive changes to enhance their wellbeing, lifestyle, enjoyment, and connection. Alongside her part time employment she spends the rest of her week running fun seated and standing exercise classes. She is passionate about keeping everyone active to help people to live longer, feel better and prevent injury.
Any surgery member of staff or Health and Social Care Professional can refer you to the local Social Prescribing Team.

An orchard of teddy bear delights
Local families are invited to pack a picnic and your favourite teddy bear, and head to the Village Orchard to gather for an afternoon of family fun, games and entertainment.
This community event is held each autumn for families with young children ages seven and under and this year will take place on Saturday 14th September.
There will be teddy-themed games with prizes to be won, including ‘guess the name of the bear’, ‘best dressed teddy, and ‘biggest teddy’ and this year we will also be joined by magician and children’s entertainer Andy Hiccup who promises “excitement and joy by the bucketload”. Expect a comedy magic show, a cheeky puppet show, balloon modelling, giant bubble blowing and much more.
As well as fun for your little ones, the Teddy Bears’ Picnic is a lovely opportunity to meet and socialise with other parents of young children who live in the neighbourhood, especially for families who are new to West Horsley. Tea and coffee will be served, but please bring plenty of water or soft drinks for your little ones. Please
note that children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
The Village Orchard is a cosy, secure green space maintained by West Horsley Parish Council for the use and enjoyment of all residents. It is located at the corner of The Street and Ripley Lane. The Village Orchard can be used at any time by the local communityperhaps for a simple family gathering, a birthday party or just simply to pick the fruit in the jam making season.

Changing colours in Horsley
There is something majestic about the splendour of autumn colours that sweep across the countryside from September - and in Horsley we are fortunate to be surrounded by many trees.
The Forest is a nature reserve that lies on the edge of East Horsley, tucked in between the Drift and the railway. It is an ancient broadleaf woodland of great biodiversity. The trees give clues to its history, so do the earthworks; the bank and ditch parallel to The Drift has marked the boundary of East Horsley parish since 1036 so was probably made by Saxons a thousand years ago.
When the community acquired the first part of The Forest, the Surrey Wildlife Trust (SWT) were prepared to manage it but wanted a volunteer warden, and so local resident Brian Austin took on this role and with a small core of committed and experienced volunteers cut paths and cleared rhododendron.
After more than 20 years as warden, Brian Austin has recently retired, with Sally Ollett taking over as the new volunteer warden for The Forest. Sally moved to Horsley four years ago from Cobham and lives close to The Forest. Recently retired, she has been enjoying walking the village’s green spaces. She’s keen to improve the access and quality of paths which can get extremely muddy in the winter, whilst ensuring the continued protection of the wildlife in this special site.
The community purchase of The Forest was also the inspiration for the Horsley Jubilee Trail with Brian spotting that it would be possible to plan a circular route linking up the publicly owned lands round the Horsleys. Now it is a well used 9 mile circular walk through the Parishes of East & West Horsley and Effingham using mainly public footpaths and bridleways through woods and open spaces including The Forest, Effingham Common, Great Ridings Wood and the Sheepleas.
Autumn is a wonderful time to explore the trail - and routes for the Horsley Jubilee Trail can easily be found online through either East or West Horsley Parish Council websites.
