• 1 1/2 pounds of Arctic Char, one or 2 fillets, depending on the size of the fillet or 4 6-oz salmon fillets (best left at room temp for 30-45 minutes)

STEP ONE: Soak the cedar plank for at lest 2-3 hours, overnight preferably.

• 1-2 cedar planks, soaked FOR THE MAPLE SHELL AC

• 3 packed tbsp of dark brown sugar • 2 tbsp low sodium tamari • 2 tbsp mirin • 1 tbsp whole grain mustard

STEP T WO: Mix all the Shellac ingredients in a small pot, bring to a boil, and cook for 1 minute or so, stirring the whole time, it will thicken. Remove from heat and let cool. This step can be done well in advance, even the day before. STEP THREE: Heat the grill to medium high heat. STEP FOUR: Place the fish on the plank, pour the Maple Shellac over the fish, place the plank/fish on the grill. Turn the heat to medium low and cook for 15-20 minutes. STEP FIVE: Serve on the plank. ◆

BRINGING ENVIRONMENT HOME Article by Staci Edwards Design

The home was originally a four-bedroom, one-bathroom home, and to better suit the client’s needs was converted to a three-bedroom, two-bathroom home. The homeowners approached Staci after receiving plans from their architect and asked if she could take those plans to finish off the design. Working with the clients, Staci and her team made some slight changes to the original plan as well as selecting all of the interior finishes and items. The focus was on making it a beautiful space for the lady of the house to enjoy. After spending a few years sharing a bathroom with her husband and two sons, the client was very excited to finally have a calm, beautiful, spa-like space to enjoy – and that’s exactly what she got. Inspired by a kitchen Staci had previously designed, a custom vanity was built and sprayed in a rich blue hue to add a pop of colour. By keeping the main finishes in the space light and airy, the bathroom feels very calm and spa-like. The marble tile, gold fixtures, and beautiful decorative lighting really helped to elevate the space to feel luxurious. Staci and her team were thrilled with how the space turned out and were happy their clients loved it as much as they did.

This project was a lovely home in the Beaches area of Toronto. The home was originally a 4-bedroom, 1-bathroom home and it’s now a 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom home, as that better suited our client’s needs. They approached me after receiving plans from their architect and we took those plans to finish off the design. We made some slight changes to the plan itself along the way to better suit our client’s needs, as well as selected all of the interior finishes and items. For this master bathroom, specifically we focused on making it a beautiful space for the lady of the house to enjoy. She had spent a few years sharing a bathroom with her husband and two sons, so she was very excited to finally have a calm, beautiful, spa-like space to enjoy – And that is exactly what we gave her! By keeping the main finishes in the space light and airy this bathroom feels very calm and spa-like. The marble tile, gold fixtures, and beautiful decorative lighting really elevate the space to feel luxurious. Inspired by a kitchen we designed, our client really wanted a blue vanity, so we designed this custom vanity and had it sprayed in our favourite rich blue hue to add a pop of colour. We are thrilled with how this space turned out and are happy our clients love it as much as we do.

We worked with Staci and her team for our second-floor renovation. They provided us with the interior design of two bathrooms, selecting all the finishes and making a few small changes to what our Architect originally provided us with: window treatments and area rugs. WE LOVE THE END RESULT AND COULDN’T BE HAPPIER! We live in an older home in The Beach area of Toronto, and Staci was sure to keep certain elements to maintain the character of the home, while also incorporating modern elements throughout the space to give it a fresh update. Staci and her team were great to work with. They were always available to answer our calls and emails as the renovation process was underway, which helped us feel more at ease throughout the stressful time of a major renovation. Overall, we couldn’t be more pleased with the interior design work that Staci and her team provided for us, and we know that we are going to enjoy what they have done for years to come!

WHILE ACCESSORIES ARE A NECESSARY FINISHING TOUCH IN EVERY SUCCESSFUL INTERIOR, IT’S A FINE LINE BETWEEN “DONE” AND “OVERDONE.” HERE ARE SOME OF OUR TIPS FOR MAXIMIZING THE POWER OF YOUR ACCESSORIES, WITHOUT GOING TOO FAR. If you’re decorating a room from scratch, we advise to consider going neutral with your larger selections such as flooring, cabinetry and large-scale soft seating furnishings. These expensive items will have a longer shelf life in neutral form, and leaves lots of room to play with colour, patterns, texture and materials in your accessories, which are far less expensive and easy to change seasonally or on a whim.

If you’re looking now to refresh and re-style a room or your entire house the first step we suggest is to remove all the “extras.” The tabletop decor, the collectables and figurines, the books, photos. Pack everything into a box and place to the side. Now, stand back and look at the room as a blank canvas. Many people actually feel liberated after the de-cluttering process, and come to appreciate the “less is more” philosophy. Simplicity makes room for the important things in life keep it simple, but significant is what we believe when looking to go minimalist.


Begin to dress your space with the right textiles. Have fun with rugs and window coverings, pillows and upholstery. Experiment with colour, pattern and different materials mix them up to bring dimension to your design. These are the elements that you may decide to change in a few years that can give you an entirely different look while not having to reinvest in the larger pieces of furniture. Now go the box that you packed up earlier. It’s time to open it again, and evaluate everything inside. Look over the items you collected and kept and answer do you love them, or kept out of obligation? If it’s the latter, then let them go. For each item in the box, ask yourself: Do I love it? Does it bring me joy? Does it have a place in my new space? If you answered “yes” to all three, put it in the “keep” pile. Otherwise, donate, give it away or sell. Your collection of accessories will likely be a combination of cherished old favourites and some fabulous new finds. This approach to accessorizing a home creates an interior aesthetic that’s as unique as its owner. Layer these in one at a time. Be selective and be considerate of your greater overall aesthetic goals.

Start with the items that are not only decorative but useful Kitchens are a great place to display cutting boards, pitchers, decanters, even wooden spoons can add to the overall decor, yet they are all items that could and should be used. Same goes for your decorative shelving. A decorative box may fill your shelf nicely but also be the perfect home for your remotes. Coaster double a decorative accessory and useful one. Look for vases that look just as nice empty as when filled, so that you can pull it off your shelf when you get a bouquet. You will definitely end up with some elements that are just there for decorative purposes, but always start with items that will be useful.
