For Futrell, the inspiration came naturally After being a guest on multiple podcasts, she realized it was time to start her own “I had been thinking of starting a podcast to review and recommend books,” she explains That simple idea quickly evolved into something more: a platform for lively, unfiltered discussion
Listeners of Hold Please , I Said What I Said can expect engaging reviews, some spoilers (you’ve been warned), and honest recommendations for what to read and watch next Whether it ’ s a new novel or a binge-worthy show, the podcast invites audiences into a space where storytelling is the main character, and real talk is always on the agenda
The title itself is as much a mission statement as it is a vibe “It reflects our personality,” Futrell says “We all have different opinions, and we will not agree on everything and that’s okay It gives listeners different perspectives.”

When Ashley Bell stepped behind the mic to co-host Hold Please , I Said What I Said, she wasn ’ t just looking for a new creative outlet she was following the joy After years of guesting on other podcasts, Bell found herself energized by the experience “It brought some joy and excitement, ” she says “We realized we could do our own podcast and do more than just feature on others’ shows”

what I watch on TV,” she says “Mostly reading but I do love to binge-watch So that opinion is usually a long dialogue”
That honesty, paired with infectious humor, defines Bell’s voice on the show “I love to laugh,” she says “I’m always going to look for what’s funny in a situation ” Still, she admits real talk can sometimes be tricky “I feel like I hold back sometimes, ” she reflects “But I’ll do better as time goes by” Growth, after all, is part of the journey

As for what’s next, Bell is dreaming big More author interviews, audience call-ins, and even live shows are on the horizon “It would be fun to have people call in on a live show,” she says “Like a live book club meeting ”

There’s something unmistakable about the way Bennie J. Smith plays his saxophone. It’s not just music it’s memory. It’s movement. It’s a lifetime of stories poured into every note. Celebrating 52 years as a musician in 2024, Bennie’s name carries weight, not just across Kentucky but throughout every venue, stage, and city he’s graced with his soulful sound.
A native son of Danville and Lexington, Kentucky, Bennie was born the eldest of four to Bennie and Dolores Smith Raised in the West End housing projects of Old Charlotte Court, his upbringing was split between Danville and Lexington two cities that helped shape his resilience, creativity, and undeniable musicality From an early age, music became his anchor Whether he was listening to the Jackson 5 or Dionne Warwick, Stevie Wonder or Paul Revere & The Raiders, Bennie was absorbing the greatness of the ’60s and ’70s, unknowingly preparing for a career that would eventually span over five decades.
His first encounter with an instrument came at Booker T. Washington Elementary School, where he picked up the flutophone in the fourth grade. But it was the saxophone introduced to him after his family relocated to Danville following his parents’ divorce that unlocked his true voice Under the mentorship of Mr William Gravely at Edna L Toliver Elementary and later Mr Boyd at
Bate Junior High, Bennie discovered both discipline and expression through music. “It gave me a place to channel everything I was feeling,” he recalls “Music was where I found my power ”
That power grew with every performance By age 14, after moving back to Lexington, Bennie joined the Winburn Junior High School Band and played football in his spare time But it was his connection with neighborhood musicians Billy Boy McCowan, Skeets Buchannan, Willie Fain, and Tilford Wallace that put him on his first professional stage. His first paid gig? A five-dollar performance inside a boxing ring at The Pipeline. Humble beginnings, but deeply foundational.
Over the years, Bennie sharpened his craft not just as a saxophonist but as a vocalist and bandleader His time with groups like The Calculus II Band and The Razz-Ma-Dazz Band led to career-defining moments: sharing the stage with iconic acts like Midnight Star, The S.O.S. Band, Ready for the World, Zapp & Roger Troutman, The Deele, Slave, The Bar-Kays, and many more. His blend of jazz, funk, soul, and showmanship placed him on the same billing as legends and held its own.
Bennie’s musical resume is stacked with unforgettable highlights. In 2019, he opened for the incomparable Roy Ayers in Downtown Louisville and even organized the backing band with Ayers’ music director, Mark Adams In 2021, he hit the stage with Norman Connors for a Mother’s Day show in Louisville That same year, he made his Texas debut, opening for R&B crooner Keith Washington in Houston, thanks to the booking by Sophisticated Lady Productions
His momentum didn’t stop there In 2022, Bennie made his West Coast debut at the “Smooth Jazzy Brunch” in Carson, California, booked by Cheryl J. Productions. Shortly after, he opened for Morris Day & The Time at Louisville’s “Everybody’s Favorite BBQ & Hot Sauce Festival,” delivering a performance that reminded the crowd exactly what real live musicianship feels like.
Bennie J. Smith is no stranger to jazz festivals either he opened for the Derby City Jazz Fest in both 2016 and 2017, performing alongside top-tier artists like Althea Rene, Maysa, Marion Meadows, Bob Baldwin, and the Urban Jazz Coalition Whether it’s a packed outdoor crowd or an intimate supper club, Bennie shows up with the same fire and finesse that has defined his sound for decades
But beyond the accolades and legendary lineups, it’s Bennie’s authenticity that resonates most He’s never chased trends Instead, he’s built a body of work rooted in experience, soul, and storytelling. His saxophone isn’t just an instrument it’s an extension of who he is. Each melody carries echoes of the neighborhoods he grew up in, the bands he built, the lessons he learned, and the stages that welcomed him.
As 2025 begins, Bennie J. Smith is still writing new chapters. Still performing. Still inspiring. I had the pleasure of interviewing Bennie and digging deeper into his motivation, his journey, and how he navigates his life through music.
Bennie, take us back to the beginning what first sparked your passion for music, and how has that evolved over the years?
First of all GIVING FULL HONOR and GLORY TO THE CREATOR!!! THANK YOU for your question I'll have to go back to my 4th grade year at OLD BOOKER T WASHINGTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL before integration in
Lexington, KY when I was introduced to the FLUTOPHONE. That was my first time playing a musical instrument. Then my Mom and Dad separated and divorced when I was 10 years old and she moved me and my siblings to Danville, KY during that summer. We started the school year there and I attended EDNA L. TO LIVER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, and I began to start acting out and trying to find ways to address my aggressions due to the dynamic change in the family structure Back then, they had posters of instruments in the classrooms, and I saw this oblong looking instrument with all these keys on it and was so fascinated by it that I wanted to learn how to play it So, I started off playing in the beginning band under the tutelage of Mr William Gravely and continued playing in the school bands all the way through the 8th grade So, I played the 5th and 6th grade band at TOLIVER and then at BATE JUNIOR HIGHSCHOOL BAND my 7th and first half of my 8th grade years.
Ironically, we moved back to Lexington during the 2nd half of my 8th grade year, and I then played in the WINBURN JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL BAND under MISS O'NAN. However, during my 9th grade year, I started playing on the WINBURN JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALLS TEAM. At the age of 14, I started playing in a band with neighborhood musicians and made my first $5 00 at a gig at a place called THE PIPELINE and we performed inside a boxing ring Although I continued to play in various bands, I also continued to play football from my 10th thru 12th grade years and started my senior year as a defensive back and lettered So, I never played in the LAFAYETTE HIGH SCHOOL BANDS
As I was approaching my high school graduation, I realized I wasn't receiving any athletic scholarships, so I decided to audition for the KENTUCKY STATE UNIVERSITY MARCHING BAND and later learned that I was accepted and received a scholarship and decided to become a Music Education Major. So, my freshman year, I was involved in the KSU MARCHING, CONCERT, JAZZ and PEP BANDS and Mr. DAVID ANDERSON became my
woodwinds and saxophone instructor. So, he was solely responsible for fine-tuning my sound, technique and improvisational skills.
Your sound carries a unique blend of emotion, authenticity, and grit. How would you describe your style, and what do you hope listeners take away from your music?
I've had the BLESSED opportunities to listen to several saxophone players, including GROVER WASHINGTON, JR , MACEO PARKER with JAMES BROWN, RONNIE LAWS, and even ISAAC HAYES when he performed on the "LIVE" AT THE SAHARA TAHOE album and 8-track on the song, "AIN'T NO SUNSHINE!!!" Ironically, although I could read music, the first two songs I learned to play by ear were "MR MAGIC" and ISAAC HAYES' "AIN'T NO SUNSHINE!!!"
I believe my emotions in playing the sax are similar to one singing emotionally One has to feel the emotions when singing lyrics and I carry those same vibes when playing. It took a whileto try to match the vocal emotions, but once I started feeling it, I could also capture on what a listening audience would want to hear.
What have been some pivotal moments in your career so far that truly shaped the artist you are today?
I would have to say the "BAND BREAK-UP SYNDROMES" because there were moments while participating in a few bands that when it seemed the band was making progress in pursuing the next phase in our growth, development and exposure the band would disintegrate!!! As a matter of fact, I actually suffered a 6-monrh depression after the breakup of one particular band However, I had a praying Mother and other support systems covering me
So, after recovering from that period, I decided to take the advice of one of my dear friends named ED GARNER and decided to do my own thing and thus...the birth of the "BENNIE J. & FRIENDS" concept back in 1988.
HeatSeekers is all about spotlighting rising fire what sets you apart in today’s crowded
music scene, and how do you stay true to your creative vision?
Great question!!! I'd have to say what sets me apart from this crowded music scene is that I'm not only a sax player, but I feel I'm a decent vocalist as well and we will and have tackled music material that others may not have either recorded or performed and I love giving Audience-Participation type of performance to give those in attendance feel like they're part of the total experience!!!
I pretty much stay true to my creative vision by checking out current trends and seeing what others may like and ultimately, what I may like myself.
You’ve worked with some impressive names and built a strong presence. How do you approach collaborations, and what do you look for in a creative partner?
I respect any Artist who's either been out there hustling for a while and new up and coming Artists. I just check and research their respective journeys, the kind of music they've released and try to envision how I could possibly fit into what they're needing either as a Saxophonist or Vocalist
Can you share a behind-the-scenes story from the making of one of your recent tracks or projects that fans might not know?
Sure When I decided to record the PATTI LABELLE cover of "SOMEBODY LOVES YOU BABY (YOU KNOW WHO IT IS)" I was inspired to record that and dedicate it to my mom, DOLORES E. WHITLEY-SMITH because she was her favorite singer and that was one her favorite songs. So, I initially reached out to KENENYA ISRAEL aka BAMM DAVIS from Detroit and he produced the track, and we recorded it in his studio in Decatur, GA called THE KITCHEN!!! This was the weekend of November 12-13, 2017. KEYBOARDIST and ARTIST BOB BALDWIN mixed the track and mastered by BOBBY FORD out of CALI.
So basically, although the song was completed in November 2017, I did a Music Video of it courtesy of Mr PATRICK MARAHALL on July 12,

I’m gonna hit the studio soon and start recording cover songs of a lot of Artists who influenced me and I want to do it in Volumes that will be tentatively entitled, "TRIBUTE TO THE LEGENDS VOLUME I" by BENNIE J. and so forth and so on...

Emani Barber is an artist who lets her heart lead the melody. With a voice refined in church pews and a creative spark lit during family jam sessions, she’s entering the indie music scene on her own terms vulnerable, determined, and wholly authentic
“I grew up in the church,” Barber reflects, tracing the roots of her musical journey. “I’ve always been a shy person, but I feel the most comfortable singing in that space.” For her, church was more than a spiritual sanctuary it was a training ground, where her voice was quietly, but powerfully, shaped.
Although she’s been singing for as long as she can remember, it wasn’t until 2023—after writing her first song and experimenting with GarageBand—that something clicked. “I had this moment of, ‘This is what I’m supposed to be doing,’” she recalls. It became more than just singing; it was about storytelling, self-expression, and stepping into her identity as a serious artist.
Now, Barber proudly sees music as more than a passion—it’s a career path that blends her love of theater, songwriting, and raw vocal expression. But make no mistake: she’s forging that path on her own terms. As an independent artist, she finds freedom in the journey. “I love my independence to create and learn on my own,” she says. “I’m in my head a lot, so not having that heavy pressure right now is something I really appreciate.”
Her influences are both clear and timeless. Brandy— often hailed as “the vocal Bible” in R&B—has left a lasting imprint on Barber’s vocal style. “I’ve loved her ever since I was a little girl,” she says. “Her tone, her ability everything in between is what I look up to.”
Barber’s humility shines through when she talks about performing with others. She’s still learning the importance of blending and teamwork—realizing that sometimes, stepping back is just as powerful as belting a solo.
My mind always hears notes that could enhance the background vocals,” she says with a smile. “But I have to remind myself we’re a team.”
Though Barber hasn’t taken the stage yet, she’s preparing for that moment. Until then, her creative process remains deeply personal and intuitive. A typical day involves slipping on headphones, opening GarageBand, and letting the beat guide her pen. “I love writing songs based on how the beat makes me feel,” she explains. “Sometimes my emotions are so heightened, I know exactly what I want to say.”
When it comes to mentorship, Barber doesn’t miss a beat—her answer is immediate. Her mother. “Not just in life, but musically too,” she says. “She loves writing music just like I do, and her resilience is unmatched. She knows her business, and she doesn’t play.”
So what’s next? More music and more meaning. Barber is working on songs that aim to uplift and move listeners, tracks that, in her words, “make you feel good and groove.” It’s only the beginning for an artist who’s still learning, still evolving but always leading with heart, and always singing her truth.
One thing’s for sure: Emani Barber is no longer just singing in the background she’s stepping into the spotlight, and she’s ready to be heard.

THS: When were you first recognized for your singing talents?
DW: My aunt heard me singing on the porch one day and asked me if I would sing that song in church on Sunday I did and joined the children’s choir I was 3 years old.
THS: Who discovered your talents when you got started?
DW: I was singing in the church choir I took a job in a record store owned by my 12th grade math teacher and he heard me singing one day. He then brought over a gentleman who owned a record label in Chicago and I was signed to his label; Toddling Town Records
THS: At what moment did you decide to make music/singing a career?
DW: I was in my third year of touring with Stevie Wonder when I was offered a solo contract and realized that I wasn’t going to be a nurse
THS: It’s been noted that you have done a lot of work overseas in the early days of your career. How did other countries respond to your music?
DW: The response to my music was incredible.
THS: What was your most memorable moment in music?
DW: I’ve had so many that it’s hard to list them all but certainly one of them is when I had dinner with Sarah Vaughn at her house!
THS: How do your creativity flow with music?
DW: I just love to sing and once I start humming or singing words come to me about what I’m singing about
THS: Tell us about experiences being a backup vocalist with Stevie Wonder?
DW: Being a backup singer for Stevie Wonder was amazing I learned so much from him, especially about songwriting I wrote poetry in high school and while with him I learned that poetry plus music equals song!
THS: How did you feel when you first heard your record on the radio?
DW: I had to pull over to the side of the road; then I started to cry!
THS: What is the biggest lesson you have learned throughout your journey?
DW: To have humility!
THS: You made beautiful music over the years. How does it feel to be a musical icon?
DW: Am I? Okay if you say so!!!!
THS: I was a soprano in my early days of singing. I admire your talent to reach high notes. Did you take any vocal lessons/classes when you first started in the industry?
DW: My first lesson was singing in the church choir under the direction of my cousin who would have me go back and forth from high soprano to middle soprano I even sang alto on occasions While with Stevie he sent us to a vocal coach named Seth Riggs who was the vocal coach to the stars He wanted me to sing opera but I declined!
THS: What artists, groups, or songs have influenced you the most? Why?
DW: Nancy Wilson, Sarah Vaughn, Bobby Blue Bland, Johnny Mathis, Lena Horne, Little Jimmy Scott, Earth, Wind and Fire, The Supremes, Dinah Washington and the Jackie Gleason Orchestra
THS: Do you have any projects currently in the works?
DW: I’m writing a book entitled “Bringing Out The Queen In You” based on the year-long beautification process that Queen Esther went through before she went to the king.
THS: What is next for Deniece Williams?
DW: Besides my book I’m working with the mayor of my hometown of Gary, Indiana to help rebuild the city We’re opening up somber living homes for women and men and hopefully a food bank there.
THS: If you could share wisdom with a new artist, what you you tell them?
DW: I would encourage them to be unique It’s great to admire other artists but create your own voice; your own style. Also, if you are a songwriter please register your song with the Library of Congress so that no one can steal your music!

I sat down with Mariea to explore her journey, her creative process, and the heartbeat behind her artistry. In her own words, she shares what drives her, what challenges her, and what she’s building next
What initially drew you to the harp, and how did you know it was your instrument?
From the moment I first saw the harp, I was mesmerized. It wasn’t just the beauty of the instrument it was the sound. There’s a spiritual and emotional connection that happens when I play; I feel like I’m speaking through the strings. I knew early on that the harp would be more than just an instrument for me it would be my voice, my calling, and my way to connect with the world.
How do you approach fusing genres like jazz, R&B, and funk with the harp?
I approach the harp the same way a pianist or guitarist might approach their instrument with soul, rhythm, and intention I listen to the feel of each genre and allow my imagination to interpret it in in my own voice It’s all about pushing boundaries and reimagining what’s possible I honor the classical roots, but I infuse it with grooves, syncopation, and emotion that reflect who I am and the sounds that have shaped my musical journey
What has been one of your most memorable performances, and why?
Performing for First Lady Michelle Obama is a moment I’ll never forget. It wasn’t just about the prestige it was about what that moment represented. As a Black woman with a harp, I felt like I was breaking every stereotype in real time. It was powerful, affirming, and a reminder that representation truly matters.
What has your journey been like navigating the music industry, and what keeps you inspired?
The journey has had its challenges, especially being in a niche genre and playing an instrument not typically seen in the spotlight or as a lead instrument But every “no” fueled me to find another door, or build my own What keeps me inspired is the impact seeing young Black girls watch me perform and realize that they too can play any instrument, in any style, and be seen in a positive light Music is my mission, and that keeps me going.
Can you give us a glimpse into your creative process?
Sometimes it’s a bassline that grooves in my head, other times it’s a melody that just won’t let go. I often build around emotion and the audience response what do I want the listener to feel? First of all, excitement that the harp can play R&B, smooth jazz music with soul and passion, I experiment with layering harp over beats, live instruments, and even synths, always searching for a fresh way to tell a story. I let the harp surprise me, making the chord and melody changes and that keeps it exciting
What’s next for Mariea Antoinette?
I’m beyond excited about my upcoming single “Fierce” and “Happy Feelings” by Frankie Beverly it’s bold, rhythmic, and full of attitude It’s a preview of what’s to come on my next album, which will continue to blend harp with powerful, soul-stirring production A powerful book, and I’m also looking forward to new opportunities with my Soulful Orchestra band for a national tour and working on a visual performance series that highlights the cultural roots of the harp. 2025 is going to be unforgettable!

Plummer’s ability to tap into this type of content reflects his deep understanding of the modern viewer’s appetite for entertainment that feels raw and unfiltered Unlike traditional TV, which is often heavily edited and sanitized for broad audiences, Zeus embraces its edgy and controversial nature Plummer’s platform gives influencers and reality stars more freedom to be themselves, often allowing for more spontaneous and unscripted moments that mainstream TV would never show.
Zeus Network’s Business Model and Directto-Consumer Approach One of the key innovations of Zeus Network is its direct-to-consumer model, which eliminates the middlemen typically found in

Lost Hope, Faith Found by Dr. Norma McLauchlin and Brandy Miller is a stirring, emotionally honest exploration of a mother’s unwavering love and a son’s rocky path to redemption. This powerful narrative highlights the messy, often heartbreaking realities of addiction and broken trust—but also the healing power of faith, forgiveness, and the grace of God.
The novel centers around Miriam Ross, a devoted single mother who has sacrificed everything for her son, Paul. Her love is boundless, but when Paul crosses an unthinkable line by stealing her savings and leaving her in debt, she is faced with a gut-wrenching decision: continue enabling him, or step back and allow him to face the consequences of his actions. The pain of letting go is palpable, and McLauchlin and Miller do a beautiful job capturing the emotional turmoil that comes with such a choice.
Paul Ross is not simply a character to be judged he’s a fully realized, deeply wounded individual whose descent into addiction is painted with nuance and authenticity. His story doesn’t shy away from the dark moments. Instead, it invites readers to see beyond the surface of his mistakes and into the root of his despair. When Paul reaches his lowest point, it is not a dramatic rescue or quick fix that turns his life around, but rather a quiet, transformative encounter with God’s mercy.
What truly stands out about this book is its spiritual depth. The authors seamlessly weave themes of faith, grace, and inner healing into the story, making it not just a tale of family struggle but a testament to the redemptive power of belief. The moments where Miriam turns to God in prayer and finds peace despite her circumstances are especially moving.
The book's pacing is steady, although there are moments when the prose becomes slightly repetitive or leans too heavily into exposition rather than letting scenes unfold naturally. At times, more showing than telling would have made the emotional beats even more powerful. Additionally, some supporting characters could have used more development to fully flesh out the world Miriam and Paul inhabit.
Still, these minor issues don’t take away from the impact of the message. Lost Hope, Faith Found is a compassionate and inspiring story that will resonate with anyone who has ever struggled with letting go, faced the pain of betrayal, or clung to faith when all seemed lost.
Highly recommended for readers who enjoy Christian fiction, stories of second chances, and heartfelt family dramas with a redemptive arc.

So Charleston is one of my favorite places to visit because it has a lot of different types of restaurants that are not the average
A While back when visiting in Charleston I came to eat dinner at Herd Provisions with my son Tyler Shockley Daughter n law Lena Fender and her momma Mrs Terri. The atmosphere was perfect! The weather was warm, so we sat outside in view of the sparkling lights.
It’s one of my son Tyler’s favorite places To eat in Charleston and I can see why they have a grocery section as well as signature wine And all of their beef is grass fed
I love it when I go to dinner with someone who has actually been to the location before because they help me choose which meal that would give the best review
I let Tyler choose for me His choice was the blue cheese burger It was amazing with beef fat fries with lemon aioli Now, if you are tight with money, this is not the place to go The beef patty was very thick and cooked to perfection The burger came with homemade blue cheese creamy sauce and the lemon zest gave ot a perfect fit for my taste buds. The burger also had made to perfection bacon.
The reason why this burger was the best burger that I’ve ever had is because the burger alone cost $26 You read that correctly The bread was toasty, but still soft
