Setting Healthy Boundaries in Relationships

Boundaries are vital stepping stones in the intricate dance of relationships that help define our interactions and maintain our well-being. Healthy boundaries foster respect and understanding.

Next, remember that boundaries are not just about saying "no." They're also about knowing what you're comfortable with and want from the relationship. Take time to reflect on your limits and assert them confidently. After all, healthy boundaries can lead to a stronger, more fulfilling connection. And emotional safety, allowing both partners to thrive.

This applies to friendships too! If these people constantly drain you, do not respect your boundaries, and push their luck, push them right out of your life.

Note what makes you happy and unhappy, when your energy decreases, and who you are with at these times. By understanding your own needs, you empower yourself to communicate them effectively. For instance, if you need personal space after a long day, expressing this need is reasonable and necessary for your mental health.

Finally, be prepared for some pushback. Not everyone will immediately understand or respect your boundaries, and that's okay. However, remember that firm boundaries lead to stronger bonds. Stay consistent and patient; in the end, you'll protect your well-being and cultivate healthier relationships built on respect instead of opportunity or convenience.

Sincerely,

Empowering Stories: A 5-Star Review of My Bully, My Aunt, and

Gift by

in Honor of Women's History Month

Women’s History Month serves as a timely reminder to reflect on the women who have influenced our lives—shaping our identities, worldviews, and emotional landscapes. While the month highlights women’s accomplishments, it also invites us to delve into the complex, sometimes painful, relationships that have made us who we are. Harold Phifer’s memoir, My Bully, My Aunt, and Her Final Gift, explores the intricate dynamics of family, particularly the often challenging roles women play in our lives. This deeply personal reflection offers readers valuable lessons on resilience, healing, and forgiveness, making it a powerful read this Women’s History Month.

At its heart, My Bully, My Aunt, and Her Final Gift is a candid exploration of the impact family— specifically the women in our lives—has on us. Phifer’s Aunt Kathy was a domineering, sometimes cruel figure who left a lasting imprint on his childhood. As he recounts the highs and lows of their tumultuous relationship, he unveils an emotional journey where love and resentment coexisted, and where healing came from the most unexpected sources.

Phifer’s writing style strikes a balance between raw emotion and humor, giving readers a chance to reflect on their own family dynamics while allowing them to find humor amid pain. His candid vulnerability makes his reflections relatable, as he invites readers into his personal world. While Aunt Kathy’s behavior was often toxic, Phifer’s ability to laugh at their absurd interactions and ultimately find peace with her passing showcases his emotional growth. The irony of this bittersweet journey is that his aunt’s death becomes a pivotal moment of healing and self-discovery, proving that closure often comes from the least expected of circumstances.

One of the most compelling aspects of Phifer’s memoir is his capacity to connect his personal story to broader themes of family, trauma, and forgiveness. Rather than merely focusing on the damage done by his aunt, he examines how her actions inadvertently shaped his own character. In reflecting on his pain, Phifer acknowledges the lessons he learned: resilience, selfreflection, and, ultimately, forgiveness. This makes the memoir not just an account of overcoming personal adversity but a meditation on how toxic relationships, when examined with grace and introspection, can yield invaluable lessons about life and love.

Through vivid storytelling and sharp, engaging prose, Phifer transports the reader into his childhood memories—tension-filled family gatherings, and even the awkwardness of planning a memorial for an aunt no one seems eager to mourn. His ability to navigate between humor and pain creates an engaging narrative that speaks to the heart of human experience. Phifer’s humor, while never diminishing the emotional weight of his experiences, lightens the tone, making the memoir an insightful and relatable read.

What sets My Bully, My Aunt, and Her Final Gift apart from other memoirs is its honesty. Phifer doesn’t shy away from confronting uncomfortable truths, and his willingness to explore both the light and dark aspects of his relationship with Aunt Kathy resonates deeply. This is not just a book about a toxic family dynamic it’s a story about selfdiscovery, growth, and the quiet moments of redemption that often go unnoticed.

Beyond the personal journey Phifer shares, his memoir also carries an important message about forgiveness and healing. Rather than providing easy answers or neatly packaged resolutions, Phifer invites readers to reflect on their own familial relationships and how they, too, might find healing through acceptance and reflection. His message of resilience and forgiveness speaks to the power of self-examination, especially during Women’s History Month when we are encouraged to evaluate the ways in which the women in our lives, whether they uplift or challenge us, help shape our personal growth.

My Bully, My Aunt, and Her Final Gift is a poignant exploration of family’s messy, contradictory nature. Phifer’s ability to blend vulnerability, pain, and humor offers a refreshing take on the complexities of familial love. His story resonates with anyone who has navigated the emotional highs and lows of family life and who has faced difficult, often painful, relationships. The book encourages readers to reconsider their perceptions of family and forgiveness, making it a valuable read for those seeking deeper understanding of their own familial dynamics.

The memoir’s structure is also noteworthy. Phifer fluidly shifts between reflections and childhood memories, keeping the narrative engaging while reinforcing the theme that the past shapes the present. These transitions keep readers hooked from start to finish, ensuring a dynamic reading experience.

This memoir is ideal for readers who appreciate personal reflections with a dose of humor. Phifer’s ability to combine humor and honesty makes this a deeply engaging and emotionally resonant story. Readers will laugh, cry, and perhaps even find parts of themselves in his journey. His unflinching vulnerability and candid storytelling demonstrate the transformative power of narrative, inspiring those struggling with their own familial challenges to reflect, heal, and maybe even forgive.

Final Verdict: My Bully, My Aunt, and Her Final Gift is a memoir that’s as thoughtprovoking as it is heartfelt. Harold Phifer’s skill in balancing humor and emotion makes this book a captivating, insightful, and ultimately uplifting read. It’s a must-read for anyone who has dealt with complicated family relationships and serves as a reminder of the importance of reflection, personal growth, and forgiveness. Highly recommended for those seeking a deeply personal and empowering story.

Tasteful Trips and Trips visits Las Meras

Tortas in Greenville South Carolina

So, did you realize that Mexicans specialize in more than tacos & fajitas? Six years ago I went to Miami and had this Cuban sandwhich that was similar to the Mexican torta I had here in Greenville a few years back. For some reason, I had a craving for it over the last couple of weeks.

So I pulled up and walked straight in to order my food. And a beautiful young porcelain skin teenager greeted me with her smile. (Which got her a tip upon exciting!) She and a few of the young guys knew exactly what I wanted. It was the Hawaiian torta. Strangely that I’m partial Hawaiian I was craving this meal.

It comes with cheese, ham, pineapple, tomatoes, onions, jalapeños, and guacamole. (I omitted the jalapeños ) It was so delicious!!

I did order the french fries. But I was a little disappointed because they were skinny like McDonald’s, but they wasn’t crispy but warm. ($1.99) And the size that I got, It was not worth the two dollars I paid.

However, the Hawaiian torta was everything I wanted, and it definitely filled my taste buds complete. The size portion is huge so of course I could not eat but only half the sandwich. It looks like mayonnaise is also put on the sandwich and it makes it juicy. The bread was very tender and moist and all the flavors in the sandwhich worked well together. ($8.99)

I love the hibiscus flavored water too. ($2.75) Everytime that I get Mexican dishes and it’s offered, I try to get that as my drink selection. It’s Very refreshing!

For dessert, I chose the flan. ($4.00) It’s a creamy Carmel custard with caremel juices soaked in the bottom of the container to dip each bite! It’s a favorite and not too sweet but touches the right spot for your tastebuds after a meal. It woukd be great served with warm coffee too.

I definitely will be back sooner than later to try some of the other Mexican dishes they offer. My daughter is married to a Mexican and I have three Mexican grandchildren, so I want to learn about the culture and the different flavors of food that the Mexican families serve.

The total of my meal was $19.15. I was very pleased with the food & drink, with the exception of the McDonald look-alike French fries. (lol)

The price of food in this economy stage of living has gone up so high. However, the price is comparable and similar to what prices are today in restaurants.

If you ever travel through the Berea Hispanic community area this location is in the shopping center right off Whitehorse Road behind the McDonald’s & Waffle House in Berea. They even have a sidebar with a lot of trimmings that you can add to your meal as complementary choices. The service to go was on point, and quick.

This may be my new favorite Mexican restaurant in Greenville South Carolina.

The Untimely Deaths of R&B Legends: Roberta Flack and Angie Stone

They say music soothes the soul, and when you mention Roberta Flack and Angie Stone, that is exactly what these women brought to the table. These two powerhouses had soulful voices that made you feel the words they poured their hearts into.

Do I dare call them legends? You are right; their musical contributions have left an incredible mark on the genre. The recent news of their deaths shocked fans from all over as if it were the end of an era for soulful R&B and neo-soul fans alike. Their impact on the music industry will continue to resonate.

Born in 1937, Roberta Flack was a crossover sensation whose smooth voice and emotive delivery brought classic hits like “Killing Me Softly with His Song” and “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face”. She was a powerhouse vocalist and an accomplished pianist, blending elements of jazz, pop, and soul into her distinct sound. Flack was more than a singer; she was an icon who bridged gaps between genres and brought people together through her music. Flack’s ability to connect deeply with her audience through her songs was unparalleled, earning her multiple Grammy Awards and a devoted fan following.

On the other hand, Angie Stone emerged as a formidable force in the neo-soul music scene. With roots that trace back to the early hip-hop era, she established herself as a versatile artist known for her powerful voice and songwriting prowess. Hits such as "No More Rain (In This Cloud)" and "Wish I Didn't Miss You" showcased her ability to blend traditional R&B with contemporary influences, resonating with listeners across generations. Stone's work not only defined a genre but also empowered a generation of musicians and fans. Her messages of love, resilience, and selfempowerment inspired many.

Both Flack and Stone exemplified the heart and soul of R&B, influencing countless artists who followed in their footsteps. Their music transcends time, and while they may no longer be alive, their spirits will forever be embedded in the rhythm and soul of R&B music.

Marion Stokes: The Woman Who Recorded History by: King Brooks

Marion Stokes was an activist, librarian, and television producer whose name remained largely unknown to the public for most of her life. However, her extraordinary dedication to documenting history has left behind one of the most valuable and comprehensive archives of television news ever created. Spanning over 35 years, from 1977 until her death in 2012, Stokes meticulously recorded television broadcasts 24/7, creating an unparalleled visual chronicle of modern history.

Early Life and Activism

Marion Stokes was born on November 25, 1929, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She grew up during a time of significant social and political change in the United States. Her early career saw her working as a librarian, where she developed a deep appreciation for knowledge and historical records.

However, her passion extended beyond books—she was deeply invested in political activism, particularly during the Civil Rights Movement.

Stokes was a committed Marxist and was active in Communist circles during the mid20th century. She later co-produced a local television program, Input, which focused on progressive discussions about political and social issues. Her work as a producer exposed her to the power of television as a tool for shaping public perception and documenting events, ultimately influencing her life's mission.

The Television Recording Project

In 1977, Stokes began recording television news broadcasts—an endeavor that would become a lifelong obsession. She recognized early on that news narratives were constantly shifting, and she believed that television was an essential medium for preserving truth. As cable news expanded in the 1980s and 1990s, she recorded networks like CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, and local

stations, capturing not only major global events but also the evolution of media bias and storytelling. To accomplish this, Stokes maintained a fleet of VHS and Betamax recorders running simultaneously in her home. She meticulously cataloged her tapes, ensuring that no broadcast was missed. Over the years, her collection grew to an estimated 70,000 VHS tapes, capturing everything from presidential elections to breaking news, trivial daily reports, and even commercials.

Challenges and Dedication

Stokes’ project required immense dedication and sacrifice. She structured her life around the recordings, making sure multiple machines were always running. She even limited her time outside the house to ensure that no significant news was lost.

Her wealth, largely stemming from her marriage to John Stokes, a successful investor, enabled her to sustain this expensive endeavor. Her commitment was so extreme that, toward the end of her life, her home was filled floor-toceiling with tapes, making it difficult to navigate.

Legacy and Impact

Marion Stokes passed away on December 14, 2012—the same day that the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting occurred, an event she would have undoubtedly recorded. After her death, her massive archive was

discovered and eventually donated to the Internet Archive. In 2013, the Internet Archive began the process of digitizing her collection, making her work accessible to researchers, historians, and the public.

Her recordings have since become an invaluable historical resource. They provide a rare, unfiltered glimpse into how news media shaped public perception over decades, highlighting biases, changes in reporting styles, and the ways in which history is told in real time.

Marion Stokes’ story is one of quiet but profound dedication to truth and history. While many people consume the news passively, she saw the importance of preserving it for future generations. Her work ensures that history, as it was broadcast, remains available for analysis and reflection. In an era where misinformation and media manipulation are major concerns, Stokes’ archive stands as a testament to the power of documentation and the enduring value of truth.

Sheltered and educated, Eliza’s happy childhood always included music lessons to nurture her unique gift: a glorious three octave singing voice that leaves listeners in awe. But on the eve of her twenty-fourth birthday, young Eliza’s world is thrown into a tailspin when her mother dies

Eliza’s inheritance is contested by her mother’s white cousins, leaving her few options She can marry her longtime beau, Lucien, though she has no desire to be a wife and mother. Or she can work as a tutor for rich families Her mother’s dying wish was for Eliza to pursue her talent and become a professional singer, but that grand vision now seems out of reach.

Before launching into the song, Lamar quipped, “I want to perform their favorite song, but you know they love to sue,” referencing ongoing legal disputes This moment was a bold display of artistic rivalry on one of the world’s largest stages.

Artist Spotlight of the Month-

Artist Spotlight of the Month- Artist of the Month-

J. WHITE J. WHITE J. WHITE

THS: Tell us about yourself?

J. White: I’m a Detroit native , now based in Phoenix, Arizona. I have been playing Saxophone professionally since 2007.

THS: Who is J, White?

JW: I’m a music artist who expresses himself through the Saxophone. I’m also a family man and a business man.

THS: How did you get your start in the music industry?

JW: I released my first major album “A New Jazz Swagger: Reloaded” in 2012. I received some of my very first radio play from that record. However, one of my biggest breaks was winning second place at the ‘Rising Star” competition at the Warren Hill Sax Summit in 2013 After making a name for myself in at the Sax Summit in California, many doors were opened. I was given a slot as an opener at the Arizona Jazz Festival and San Diego Jazz Festival. I took every opportunity I was given and multiplied it into more and more.

THS: What made you decide to be serious about playing the saxophone?

JW: In 10th grade, my band teacher kept pushing me to get into the Jazz ensemble. I never wanted to join because rehearsal was at 7am, before school started. I finally broke and joined the band. I remember taking my first solo at a Jazz competition and from that point on I was hooked. I loved the way the notes fit over the chord changes and the way it felt learning how to play Jazz and also playing from my heart and soul. I began private sax lessons and continued on to College on a music scholarship at the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff I was a member of the Marching Band, Wind Symphony, and Jazz Ensemble. I also started playing Sax in a local band that traveled all around Southern Arkansas playing Top 40’s, Blues and R&B.

THS: Did you emulate anyone that you admired?

JW: When I started getting serious about Jazz, I studied a lot of Charlie Parker, Cannonball Adderly and Dexter Gordon. Then I discovered Kirk Whalum and I fell in love with his playing.

It was the first time I heard a Saxophonist emote so much passion and soul while playing. It taught me to look at music at a way in which you learn the fundamentals but also dig deep and find your voice on the horn.

THS: Which person/people or books have had the most influence on your career and why?

JW: Effortless Mastery by Kenny Warner is a book that’s had a nice impact on me as a musician. The concept in the book is for musicians to stop over thinking while playing. As musicians, we put way too much pressure on ourselves to be the best or considered one of the best My Dad is a person that’s had influence on my career as well. He’s not a musician, but he’s extremely smart, hard working and has great discernment. I try to embody all three of those attributes as much as possible as I navigate my music career.

THS: What advice can you give other individuals who want to follow in your footsteps?

JW: My biggest advice to other aspiring musicians is to maximize every opportunity you get. It doesn’t matter if it’s big or small, great pay or bad pay. Particularly when you are first getting started, money shouldn’t be your focus Your talent and consistency will speak for itself and open all of the doors you need opened.

THS: What are you working on that you can talk about? New music?

JW: I have a new single entitled, “On ya feet” that was released March 7th. I’m also working on finishing my next EP, which I hope to have ready later this year. Also, I just signed with Infinity Artist Group, who specializes in booking and artist development.
