Love Without Borders: Dating Outside Your Race

In a world that constantly champions progress, acceptance, and inclusion, there's still something provocative almost rebellious about interracial dating It's not just about two people coming together; it's about history, culture, identity, and often, resistance. Dating outside your race isn't just a romantic decision it's a radical act in some spaces and a profoundly human one in others.

So why does love across color lines still spark so much conversation?

Many people claim they're "open to love," but when it comes to dating outside of their race, biases both conscious and unconscious come into play Some say it's just "preference," but often those preferences are shaped by media, upbringing, and societal conditioning. Who told you what beauty looks like? Who taught you which cultures are desirable and which are disposable?

If your preferences only align with one race, especially your own, it may be time to dig deeper.

There is something undeniably powerful about two people from different racial backgrounds choosing to love one another. Blending traditions, language, food, fashion, and family values can be enriching, eye-opening, and beautiful. You learn to see the world through someone else's lens, which can expand your compassion and understanding more than any book or documentary ever could

Children born into interracial families often carry dual or even multiple cultural identities, which, when embraced, can make them some of the most well-rounded individuals But the beauty doesn't erase the complexity

Loving someone outside your race isn't all fairy tales and filtered Instagram couple goals There are real-world issues that can show up in unexpected ways: some families, still clinging to outdated beliefs or carrying deep generational trauma, may not welcome your partner. How do you navigate love when your blood doesn't support it?

Saying you "don't see color" in love may sound noble, but it's not realistic or respectful. When you love someone of another race, you must see them See their struggles, their history, their truth Color matters because culture matters Experiences shaped by race matter. And choosing to love someone fully means acknowledging every layer of their identity not ignoring it

Choosing to love someone outside your race in a world that often seeks to divide is an act of quiet revolution It's not always easy but it's always powerful. It challenges you to grow. It forces you to reflect. And most importantly, it teaches you that real love transcends boundaries, breaks stereotypes, and rewrites narratives

So, if love comes knocking on your door and it doesn't look like what you expected, you should still open it. Your soulmate might be wrapped in a different shade, but speaking the same language, your heart has been waiting for

Princess Gooden Princess Gooden

Princess F.L. Gooden, author of Take Self Out of SelfPublishing, delivers a no-nonsense guide for indie authors ready to treat their craft like a business. With sharp insights and unflinching honesty, she dismantles common myths and equips writers with the strategies needed to thrive in the competitive world of self-publishing.

King Brooks: What inspired you to write Take Self Out of Self Publishing, and what gap in the market were you aiming to fill?

Princess F.L. Gooden: Take Self Out of Self Publishing came from watching too many authors spin their wheels and make the same mistakes I did when I started. The market’s flooded with vague advice, but not enough real talk. I wanted to give authors something raw and practical no fluff, just hard truths about what works and what doesn’t in the self-publishing world.

King Brooks: The title itself is provocative what do you mean by "taking the self out of self-publishing"?

Princess: Self-publishing is about more than just you and your personal writing journey. It’s about your audience, your brand, and treating your work like a business. When you focus only on yourself, you miss the bigger picture. The “self” has to go if you’re serious about making it in this industry. It’s not about creating a product for your ego—it’s about creating something that serves the reader. It should be "Independent Author" or "Indie Author," not "Self-Publishing Author." The moment you shift your mindset from self to business, you’ll see your success in a whole new light.

King Brooks: In your experience, what are the top three reasons most self-published books fail?

Princess: First, they treat it like a hobby, not a business. If you’re serious about success, you need to put in the work. Second, poor-quality production whether it's editing, design, or formatting, a lack of professionalism shows.

Lastly, they fail to market early and effectively. If you’re waiting until your book is out to think about how to sell it, you’re already behind.

King Brooks: How should an author’s mindset shift when transitioning from hobbyist to professional in the publishing world?

Princess: If you’re a writer, write. If you want to be an author, write books. Plain and simple. A hobbyist thinks “I’ll write when I feel like it.” A professional knows that writing is a job. It's about deadlines, strategies, and showing up even when it’s hard. You need to treat this like a business, not just a passion project.

King Brooks: You stress the importance of treating publishing like a business. What does that actually look like in practice for indie authors?

Princess: It means planning everything from your budget to your marketing strategy. You need systems whether it’s for tracking sales, planning book releases, or managing your finances. Treat every book as an investment in your future. If you’re serious, it’s not just about writing; it’s about making decisions that support your long-term goals.

King Brooks: Many authors struggle with pre-writing and planning. What does a strong pre-writing process entail?

Princess: Think of planning as your roadmap. Before you write a single word, you need clarity on who your book is for, what problem it’s solving, and where it fits in the market. A strong plan ensures you’re not wandering aimlessly halfway through. Start with a clear outline and know the destination—this will keep your story on track from start to finish. My book breaks this down in detail, showing you exactly how to create a plan that works.

King Brooks: Can you share a major editing or revision mistake that you've seen derail an otherwise promising book?

Princess: One major mistake is rushing through edits. You can’t expect your first draft to be ready for the world. I've seen authors skip necessary revisions to preserve their “vision” of the book, only to watch it fall flat because it wasn’t ready. The revision process is where the magic happens, and skipping that stage can cost you big time.

King Brooks: Why do you believe so many authors underestimate the importance of professional cover design and interior formatting?

Princess: People think they can DIY their way through it. But here’s the deal: your cover is your first impression. If it doesn’t look professional, readers won’t take your book seriously. Same goes for formatting—if your text is hard to read or looks amateur, it reflects badly on your work. You wouldn’t show up to a corporate job in sweatpants, so why present your book that way? If you did show up in sweatpants for a corporate job,

people would question your professionalism. So why risk your book being treated the same way?

King Brooks: How should self-publishers approach legal and business issues—like ISBNs, copyrights, and forming an LLC?

Princess: Treat it like a business from day one. ISBNs protect your book, copyrights protect your work, and an LLC helps shield your personal assets. If you’re serious about self-publishing, these steps aren’t optional they’re necessary. It’s about setting up a professional foundation from the start.

King Brooks: What’s one myth about book distribution that independent authors need to stop believing?

Princess: The myth that Amazon KDP is the only platform you need. Sure, it’s great, but it’s limiting. To reach a wider audience, you need to be distributing through multiple channels, whether it’s IngramSpark or libraries. Diversifying your distribution is key to getting your book in front of more readers.

King Brooks: You’ve said marketing is often treated as an afterthought. What should a solid promotional plan include—especially pre-launch?

Princess: A good promotional plan starts way before your book is available. It’s about building your brand, creating buzz, and connecting with your audience early. That means building an email list, setting up a launch team, and getting early reviews. When you wait until after launch to start promoting, you’ve already missed the boat.

King Brooks: What advice do you have for indie authors trying to identify and reach their target readers?

Princess: Know who your readers are and where they hang out. Social media is powerful, but you’ve got to know which platforms to focus on. Join groups, engage in discussions, and make sure your marketing is tailored to the right audience. The more you understand them, the better you can speak their language.

King Brooks: How can independent authors build sustainable careers rather than just one-off book releases?

Princess: Keep writing. One book won’t make your career—it’s about building a catalog and continuously engaging with your audience. You’ve got to show up consistently, whether it’s new books, newsletters, or social media. The authors who build lasting careers are the ones who are in it for the long haul, not just for the next quick release.

King Brooks: What role do publishing professionals —editors, designers, marketers—play in an author's success, and how can new authors afford them?

Princess: These professionals are essential to your book’s success. Editors make sure your book is polished, designers make sure it looks professional, and marketers help you get the word out. For new authors, start small—use freelancers, look for bundle deals, or even trade services with other creatives. But don’t skimp on the essentials—these professionals are the difference between success and failure.

King Brooks: If you could give one piece of brutally honest advice to an aspiring indie author, what would it be?

Princess: Stop talking about writing, stop planning, stop waiting for the “right time.” If you’re a writer, write. If you want to be an author, write books. Period. Quit pretending that a book is going to magically come together without you putting in the work. You can’t call yourself an author if you never finish anything. You can’t hide behind excuses about “not having time” or “not being inspired.” Writing is the job, and if you’re not doing the work, you’re not serious. Everything else the marketing, the branding, the networking? It all comes after you put words on the page. So stop making excuses and get to work.

Emory Lawrence: Finding Strength in Action

Emory Lawrence: Finding Strength in Action

Emory Lawrence

In a world that often glorifies the glitz and glamour of fame, Emory Lawrence emerges as a refreshing reminder of the raw, unfiltered essence of being human. Known for his captivating roles in productions like "All The Shine" and "The Deceitful Wife," Emory’s journey is not just about the characters he plays; it’s about the deeply personal narrative he carries within himself When asked, “What does acting mean to you?” Emory’s eyes light up, revealing a man who finds profound solace in his craft “For me, acting is the opportunity to showcase how I see things from my perspective, from my feelings. It’s also therapy for me, because there is always a lot going on in this crazy mind of mine.” His words resonate with anyone who has ever used creativity as an outlet. In a world filled with chaos, Emory finds clarity and healing through the characters he portrays, turning his experiences into something both relatable and transformative.

Yet, behind Emory’s vibrant performances lies a history marked by pain and resilience. He is not just an actor; he is a survivor. Having faced the unimaginable trauma of being molested by a male family member at a young age and battling alcoholism, Emory understands that the road to healing is often fraught with challenges He openly discusses these experiences, not for sympathy, but to shed light on the struggles that many endure in silence “People forget that actors are humans too,” he shares, a hint of vulnerability in his voice. “We all deal with our own issues, and sharing my story is my way of connecting with others.”

Emory’s commitment to mentorship and advocacy is driven by a genuine desire to help others navigate their own dark times. He believes that sharing his journey can offer hope to those who feel trapped by their past. “What you went through is something that can be overcome,” he insists. He stands as an example for those wrestling with their own demons, encouraging them to find strength in vulnerability and to understand that healing is possible.

Central to Emory’s philosophy are three powerful affirmations: “I Am A Black King, I Can Do Anything, I Believe in Myself ” These words are more than just mantras; they are declarations of his identity and resilience. “Every day, I remind myself of my worth,” Emory explains. “In a world that can be so harsh, these affirmations ground me and serve as a reminder that I can rise above anything that comes my way.”

As he navigates the complexities of life and career, Emory Lawrence exemplifies the idea that our stories both the triumphs and the trials are what make us who we truly are. His journey is a beautiful testament to the strength of the human spirit, urging us all to embrace our stories, however painful they may be

Emory Lawrence is not just a talented actor; he is a powerful voice for change and healing. His openness about his struggles invites us to look beyond the surface and recognize the humanity in those we admire. Emory Lawrence teaches us that through action, whether on stage or in life, we can find healing and connection and ultimately, a greater understanding of ourselves and each other.

Recently I was traveling through Atlanta Georgia receiving the “Women of Honor Awards” hosted by Tribel Nickerson and Tina Bridges in Jonesboro Georgia at Rendezvous Event Centre & Banquet Hall. As I was making my way toward the back of the room, I get a tap and I look to see this wonderful big smile of Derrick with Derricks Cake Delight all dressed up in his Chef attire. I give him a hug and we proceed to his Vendor table for a picture. (Y’all know how I do, I’m the southern bell selfie Queen of social media)

So last night Focus Forward with Robin with #tastefultipsandtrips was blessed with some cookies to taste. And I told him when I get to a stopping point on my way back to South Carolina, I will do a video drop review. Well, I did the video drop but because the cookies were so delicious, I had to write an article about the story. Not every food review of tasteful tips and trips gets the opportunity to be featured in my magazine columns or my website ( www.robinshockley.com )

However, Derricks Cake Delights business is a must. He is located in Atlanta Georgia. His theme of all his receipts is “you’ve never had it so moist”. And let me tell you, the cookies I tasted were over the top baked with love and excellence

The Hottest Gourmet Cookie on the planet the “Rivulet Pecan Orgasm 2 0 cookies” aka RPO was very gooey and moist Some of the ingredients includes white chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, pecan liquor’ and pecan chips

The smell of all of the ingredients before you bring it in your mouth lit my taste buds to another level The smell was so good but the taste was even better All I could do was say ummmm over and over as I took every bite

Now, I have tasted his red velvet cake before as I did a video drop for him for that dessert a couple of years ago. It was very good too. But this cookie right here it’s definitely something that you want to have at one of your event and I had to write about it. No other cookie will make you go ummm several times. It was so good, I’m choosing to add it to my website and the three magazines I write for.

Thank you Derrick for the blessing and everyone be sure to book his business for your events.

As a composer, I pull from a mix of personal experience, classic cinema scoring, and cultural rhythms. With The Family Business, the stakes are always high, so I approach each scene with an instinct to heighten tension or soften it, depending on what the story demands. I listen to the dialogue, observe the pacing, and let the emotional undercurrent guide the tone My inspiration often comes from the idea of legacy and survival, which is at the core of this series

Every character in The Family Business has a unique presence. How do you approach scoring different personalities, and what’s the process like creating musical motifs that reflect their internal worlds?

I treat each character like a solo instrument in a larger orchestra For example, a character like Orlando might get a cool, calculated groove with electronic textures, while someone more volatile might be paired with aggressive percussion or strings I sketch out motifs that reflect their motivations, fears, and transformations It’s about giving them a musical identity that evolves with them, and making sure it feels authentic.

From season to season, the storyline evolves, so how does your sound evolve with it? What kind of pressure or freedom comes with maintaining sonic consistency while also staying fresh?

Yes, my sound evolves as the story flows. Over time, I’ve refined and expanded my sonic palette, adding new plugins and textures to create a bolder, more cinematic tone. I want to give a shoutout to my sound team, SonuScore, Heavyocity, Spectrasonics, and Initial Audio I could go on, but those tools have truly helped shape a sound that competes with the best in the industry That said, it’s always a balancing act, honoring the musical identity the audience expects while introducing new elements to reflect the story’s growth I aim to evolve without losing the heartbeat of the series.

You’ve been praised for bringing cinematic production value to the small screen. What are some of the tools, instruments, or techniques you rely on to create that big, immersive sound?

Thank you, I really appreciate that I rely heavily on layered orchestration, hybrid synths, and spatial mixing techniques. I use tools like Kontakt, Omnisphere, and the Vienna Symphonic Library to build depth. But it’s not just about gear, it’s about storytelling through dynamics, silence, and texture I mix like it’s going on the big screen, even when it’s playing in someone’s living room

There's a strong pulse to the series, almost like the music is a character itself. Was that intentional from the beginning, and how do you maintain that heartbeat throughout the show?

Absolutely, it was intentional From the jump, I wanted the music to feel like a silent narrator, echoing the heartbeat of the Duncan family That pulse reflects the urgency, the danger, the loyalty I maintain it through recurring rhythmic motifs and tempo-driven transitions that align with plot momentum. It’s subtle, but it anchors the whole experience.

As a composer, how do you strike the balance between guiding the audience emotionally and letting the actors and script breathe?

I always remind myself: music supports, it doesn’t steal the scene It’s about restraint I’ll use a single cello line where silence might be too empty, or I’ll pull back entirely when a performance needs space My job is to help the viewer feel without realizing I’m helping them feel That’s the magic zone.

What’s your creative zone like when you're locked in? Do you have any rituals or non-negotiables that get you into that 'Diggy' mode?

When I’m locked in, I like it quiet, real quiet My phone is on silent, and I usually grab the remote and throw on old reruns of Judge Mathis or, honestly, I’ll get caught up watching live police chases, those really get my adrenaline going. I don’t listen to music much because, truthfully, I’m already hearing music in my head Whether it’s for a continuing scene or something that hasn’t hit the screen yet, I’m always scoring mentally That’s just how I operate, always in creation mode

Lastly, what does it mean to you, personally and professionally, to be part of a cultural hit like The Family Business, a show that speaks so powerfully to Black legacy, power, and resilience?

It means everything To contribute to a show that celebrates Black excellence, complexity, and generational power is an honor As a composer, I’m proud to be part of shaping that narrative, especially knowing that our sound carries weight beyond entertainment. It resonates It inspires And it affirms that our stories matter, our family’s matter, and our voices are powerful

This is a show about a fictional family, and many of the cast and crew are connected in real life. Some are married, some have dated, many share Chicago roots or come from HBCU backgrounds and Greek life. That real-life bond brings authenticity to the screen. Stan Shaw, who plays Uncle Larry, is a Chicago native and an alumnus of John Marshall High School, just like me We were both under the tutelage of Delano O'Banion, who still resides in Chicago to this day I think that’s what makes this show so special, it’s family in more ways than one.

The Heat Seekers Magazine: Tell us about singing with the church as a child?

Meli’sa Morgan: Singing in Church for me was The Beginning of my spiritual journey. My parents instilled in me to believing in God and going to church from the time I was Christened as a baby!!! I joined The Gospel Choir lead by Hornrette Washington called The Starletts Of Corona when I was about 9 years old. It was a true blessing and started my journey to learning about vocals, harmony and singing. Also singing for God and feeling that energy in church was and is always… Priceless!!!

THS: How did your career get started in music?

M. Morgan: I stared singing in my Mother Margie Morgan’s living room with my sister Rita! Lol! That is really where I first started singing with records my mother purchased. Like Aretha Franklin’s “RESPECT”, The Supremes “Can’t Hurry Love” and Artists like that. My Mom use to have us perform in front of Family members and I would perform in our backyard in front of my friends in our neighborhood. From there I went on to perfom in school talent shows and with local bands as I got older, until I signed with a group that got a record deal called “BUSINESS BEFORE PLEASURE”. We were signed to Sugar Hill Records….Sylvia Robinson and her husband signed us. That was the beginning of my music career as a recording artist.

THS: What made you decide to be serious about your music career?

MM: I believe I got serious after the deal with Sugar Hill did not do well They never released and promoted the song we recorded I was kinda hurt by that. I played with the group for a while after that but then I decided I wanted to leave and work with other people and work on becoming a Solo artist. It was not easy I did a lot of background singing and recording sessions. I went to school and studied at JUILLIARD SCHOOL OF MUSIC. I played in Clubs that were hot at that time like The Cellar, Mykell’s and more. Paying my dues I guess until KASHIF kinda took me under his wings and had me touring with him and doing background vocals on his albums and albums he was producing . Like him hiring me to sing with the one and only WHITNEY HOUSTON!!! Oh yeah… I got real serious after that.

THS: Who are your major music influences in the music industry?

MM: MS PATTI LABELLE, CHAKA KHAN and more To name them all, we will be here all day I take inspiration from many Artists, but Ms Patti Labelle came to hear me sing at The Cellar when I was like 17 years old and she came on stage and sang with me I was so nervous and honored at the same time I held my own, though! What a moment!!! What an Incredible Influence and Inspiration she has been to me til this day When I was with the B B & Q Band and Ms Patti Labelle found out, she had us open up for her on tour! When My Solo career took off, she okayed for me to be on shows she was headlining. Recently she allowed me to tour with her opening up her and The Whisper’s and last year I did a show with her in New Jersey and she called me up on stage to sing and dance with her!!! Priceless moments in my life and Career. I toured with Chaka Khan as well and she was my idol. Full circle… I was on a show that she was on last year with DJ Cassidy. What an honor to be on the same show with someone I once sang background for and who is such a true Legend and Icon. I feel truly blessed to know both of these Iconic Recording Artists and Vocalists!! They changed my life and I am so grateful to both of them.

THS:What made you decide to do the cover song of “Do Me Baby?

MM: It was not my idea, it was the A&R Vice President Don Grierson at Capitol Records that decided. They had the song on hold for two years and their time was running out. They said the next R&B female artist that Capitol Records signed would have to do that song. It was ME!!! Listen, I am glad and happy and still proud that I did that song Even though at first I was very scared I talked to my Dad before I said I would do the song to see how he felt Once he gave his approval, I went in the studio ready to sing the heck out of that song! It went #1 on BILLBOARD charts for 3 Weeks!!! It is still a classic R&B SongToday!!! Recently my First album “DO ME BABY” and my First Solo single “DO ME BABY” were both Certified Gold by the RIAA selling more than 500K albums and singles I think I did pretty good!

THS: Who came up with the idea to re-vamp Fools in paradise more than once?

MM: I don’t understand the question re-vamp? I co-wrote the song and recorded the song on my First album. FOOL’S PARADISE…. Took on a life of it’s own as a favorite song from my Album especially in New York and Europe Since then LL COOL J did a song using a sample from the song JAY Z and MARY J BLIGE did a song with Fool’s Paradise’s melody and lyrics. It was part of the theme song of Love and Hip Hop MIAMI with Trina and Trick Daddy doing a song using it. I Love it! When I sing that song, it is like an Immediate Party begins!!! The Audience stands up and starts dancing and having a good time It makes my heart sooo happy that they love this song and all my songs so much!!! It also has made my music publishing more lucrative A blessing

THS: What advice can you give other individuals who want to go into the entertainment profession?

MM: Make sure you do a little research and learn about the business side of the music industry It is more than just having talent, recording and performing, Wearing nice clothes and hair and traveling!!! Having lots of fans is nice but you need to know how to make your talent and the money you make work for you.

THS: Any other interests outside of music?

MM: Oh Yes! I do “ MELI’SA FRUITSTICKS” arrangements that I Love doing for mostly my friends and family and word of mouth. I do them for Birthdays, Get togethers and Private events. I was doing my FRUITSTICKS for a restaurant in South Carolina for Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day That was fun and I did that for a couple of years I Crochet blankets and scarves I Love Decorating and renovating my homes I am building a new house and I am actually designing my new home. HS: If you had to do it all over again what would you do differently?

MM: I think I would have made sure I had a more dedicated team around me! It is so important to have people with you and around you who not only want to make money but who really believe in you and your talent and who want to see you be successful and great!!!!

THS: What was your most favorite/memorable place to sing or perform?

MM: Oh let me think…. I think Radio City Music Hall cause it is such a historic Theater in New York! Seeing my name on that Marquee was Awesome! It was one of the places I performed after I went on my first solo tour! An amazing night Unforgettable!
