A M E S SAG E F R O M T H E B OA R D C H A I R Dear VAST Academy Graduates, Along with my colleagues on the Houston Community College Board of Trustees, please accept our congratulations upon your completion of the VAST Academy program. You can take great pride in your achievement. Your hard work and perseverance have paid off, and we salute you! Cynthia Lenton-Gary, Ph.D. Chair, HCC Board of Trustees, District VII

I’m sure you did not reach this important milestone all alone. Obtaining a college credential of any kind requires the support of family and friends. Those who encouraged you and pushed you along on your journey deserve our deepest gratitude. Through the years, we have watched many VAST Academy graduates move on from Houston Community College to excel in life. Some have contributed through community service; others by setting high standards in their chosen occupation. Still others have returned to HCC to continue their studies in fields such as Child Development, Culinary Arts, Business Technology, Business Administration, Healthcare, and Welding—just to name a few. As you move forward, I encourage each of you to continue learning as a lifelong process. Build on what you have studied. As you do, you will make even greater impacts on those around you. Remember, your friends at Houston Community College are ready to provide additional support anytime you call on us. You will always remain a part of the HCC family! Again, from the entire Board of Trustees, congratulations on your accomplishment today! We wish you all the best in the days and years to come.

Sincerely,

Dr. Cesar Maldonado Chancellor

Today’s graduation marks the successful completion of a course of study and opens the door to new beginnings filled with opportunity and promise. As you step out to take your place in the world, I encourage you to consider the things that helped bring you to this moment—energy, perseverance, friends and family, and sheer hard work. The qualities you have displayed here will take you far in life. You are now ready to take that next step—perhaps into the workforce or a higher level of study, or both. Whatever direction you choose to take, you possess the knowledge and tools to succeed. HCC is proud of the role we play in preparing our students to meet the opportunities of tomorrow. As you leave us today, be confident that no challenge exceeds your capacity to overcome and excel. We are grateful that you brought your career aspirations to HCC. We trust that your experience here has been both enriching and rewarding. Wherever life takes you, know that HCC is here to support you. As you embark upon your life’s journey, I challenge you to keep learning. Hall wears many hats on road to graduation Keila Rodriguez The Egalitarian

The college classroom is a vast melting pot of students. At HCC Central, I have encountered many fresh high school graduates eager to immerse themselves in the college culture, expressing themselves unapologetically in fashion and charisma. My scope of inclusiveness at Central campus had seemed dampened by the social construct that older students would seem out of place--as if their academic aspirations are obsolete. As if we are inherently competing and racing the clock. Tonya Hall, 46, anticipates her first college graduation this spring from HCC Central. She will be graduating with an Associate degree in Communications with a specialization in Advertising and Public Relations. Tonya expresses and nurtures her character by immersing herself into multiple environments she loves and feels her values, habits, and capacities evolving. When Tonya is not watching a good film or spending time with her grandson, she dedicates her time to cosmetology and customer service outside

of the classroom. As a hair stylist and customer service agent, she has found delight in the ability to practice her communication skillsets in both professions seamlessly, which encouraged her strive to learn communications on both micro and societal levels. “At first it was getting a better understanding of myself then it was getting a better understanding of other people,” Tonya said. “Communication has a bunch of different avenues. My hair job gives me insight into what customer service is. I deal with many different cultures and everything, so when I get to the phone it’s nothing.” Tonya’s academic journey has pushed the boundaries that define a “normal” college career. She started at Blinn College in 1995 but left shortly after due to family obligations. Continuing her college career has been a redefining experience after completing trade school and raising a family. “It wasn’t easy for me. I felt a little bit overwhelmed, so I went down the road and went to trade school, which there’s absolutely nothing wrong with,” she said. “My experience was a whole turnaround compared to twenty years ago. It’s just a

community college to other people, but it helped me in a lot of ways.” The Covid-19 pandemic has affected the education system and learning style of students to many extremes. For Tonya, the pandemic’s effects had a silver lining to her academic, professional, and personal aspirations. “First, I was going to campus for all my classes. I would come from the north-side of Houston to Central campus, and then the pandemic made them virtual. It was helpful. It made it easier for me to do other things. I feel a lot more peaceful these days. I’m happy,” Tonya smiled. “It also helped me with my field because I can communicate with customers and clients with more relatable issues,” she added. “Half of moms felt like they were in carnage. They felt stuck. I was relieved because a lot of people got to see how much you really have on your plate.” The pandemic allowed many adults and young adults to reflect on various aspects of their social capabilities. After spending multiple months in isolation and communicating on video-telephony programs like Zoom, many individuals have noticed a curtailment in their social skills as the

world transitioned from the pandemic. “Communication is kind of a lost art form,” Tonya said. “The pandemic let me re-evaluate. A lot of times I went back to realizing not everyone is on the same page.” She would ask herself “Why do I feel like I’m not doing this right?” which prompted a pleasant sense of belonging to me. Tonya and I had more common ground than I thought. I would question

New mother Freeman nears earning third degree Alberta Rollins The Egalitarian

Graduation is just around the corner for a lot of Houston Community College students. For some, that means it’s time to figure out what to do next. For others, like student Alyssa Freeman, the path of becoming an inspiring coach, blossoming into a great mother, and making all her challenges a reward come right in time for her first Mother’s Day as well. Certainly, these days an independent and ambitious young woman can take on the juggle of getting an education and raising a family. However, Alyssa also manages to balance love, past traumatic experiences, holds herself accountable for her effort in close-knit family relationships, remains humble and grounded owing to her spiritual beliefs, and even attaining her third degree in sports management. After taking some time to speak with Alyssa about all of her endeavors in the sports and coaching field, she clearly has a purpose to guide the lives of the youth. From always having a love for basketball,

playing on teams in school, cheering, coaching cheer, to actually pursuing a career in the industry--these are the examples of a role model with dedication to inspire our generation should seek more often. Fortunately, this is just the beginning to Alyssa: ——— Alyssa, what are your plans and expectations for your first Mother’s Day? My family and I will be going out to lunch together ...my sister, mom and I are all mothers now! My boyfriend and I will also go celebrate with our beautiful baby girl, Skylar that evening. How do you feel about being a graduate again, but with a new baby? Now that she is here, have you noticed any changes to your daily routine as a student? It’s definitely different but so rewarding. I never doubted myself but these last two weeks have been challenging. Yes, I feel more aware of my schedule to make sure I am time managing a lot more than before. What about your support system? How do you feel about

them and what would you say is the biggest help for you to pursue your career in sports management right away? The support from both my and my [boyfriend] families have been great! They have all chipped in in many different ways such as necessary items needed along with offering to help when it’s needed. Definitely the positivity my boyfriend gives me every day to finish strong and continue my career. Do you have plans to utilize HCC’s Career Hub and/or career placement services to find what you’re looking for? Not right now. Simply because I have a steady job. But I have used their resources to give me other opportunity ideas for the future! What made you want to dive into a career in sports management? The thrill of coaching and being a part of sports! Why a third degree? I wanted to expand on my resume and current knowledge and skills of academics and career opportunities. You’ve been through so much; getting out of a toxic relationship was a major

obstacle for you. When did you see the light at the end of that tunnel? When God brought Jaquez into my life. The first thing he did was held open the door--I knew I met someone different. The littlest things matter so very much, and here we are raising our first child together!

It’s very rewarding and I feel so blessed with him as my lifelong partner, soulmate, and bestfriend. Any words of advice to other ambitious young mothers out there? “Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game!!” — A Cinderella Story.

Friendship forged at HCC inspired Pham to succeed Quynh Mai Thy Pham The Egalitarian

Being an international student on the HCC’s orientation day two years ago, was an unforgettable moment since I moved to the States. However, I had a chance to make a lot of friends, and one of them is Melzandrick Diomampo (Mel), one of my best friends at Houston Community College since day one. Mel comes from the Philippines and he is now a sophomore international student at HCC. Since we are both Asian, we have a lot of similar things to share with each other. His major is Biology after changing his major from Engineering. This is one thing that I admire about him, he finds out what he wants to do in the future, knows what is not suitable for him, and is brave enough to change his major and start again. In Vietnam, my homeland, we cannot change our major when we are attending university, it is complicated that students do not want to deal with since we need to take see if our scores are high enough. Joining activities Besides studying, he also joins the Student Association in HCC with a lot of activities which he needs to take part in after school. He aware of how important joining a school club is and it does help him when he interviews for a job, for every human resource department wants to find a graduated student with extracurricular activities. Moreover, he

is also studying at Honor College, which he told me he applied for after his first semester at HCC. Studying in Honors is really competitive for him since Honor students have been excellent since they were in high school. Also, students need to maintain their good grades to be able to stay in Honor College. It makes me even more surprised about him since he has activities to do after work and still organizes his time to complete his assignments Goal At the moment, we are both last-

year students at HCC, which means we are going to transfer to a university, and his choice was UT Health San Antonio. Transferring to university with a scholarship is his target to study hard for the past 2 years. He said that he is Filipino, and his mother tongue is not English, it was harder for him to study here so he had to try even harder than other students here, which is so inspiring that I cannot forget. Tips for freshman international students

To finish the interview, he shared some tips from his own experience with the freshmen international student. 1.Make friends with many people: International students tend to get closer together because they often meet first through an international student orientation class at the school and are surprised by new things when they arrive in the US. This is a great condition, but you should expand your circle of friends, including American students. Native students will teach you a lot about the culture and introduce you to their other friends. Make friends with them, and you might even be invited to an American Thanksgiving or an American Christmas. Besides, your English will improve significantly! 2. Don’t be ashamed of your differences: It’s being different and growing up in a different world that makes you unique. Do not be afraid to talk about yourself and your culture, and your hometown. Your friends will love it as much as you love yourself. 3. Speak slowly and ask everyone to repeat: As an international student, he was confused at first because English is not my primary language, so he talked quickly but never asked questions even though sometimes he did not understand. Therefore, speak slowly, pronounce clearly, and always ask see Friendship, Page 20

quickly realized that the power struggle she endured was herself versus herself. “I wish I just would’ve believed in myself a little bit more. The energy that I put in others I wish I would’ve put into myself,” Tonya said. “But I learned that I can do it. It can be done.” “I want to help others realize what they can achieve. With people seeing an aged woman still trying, someone who didn’t give up on themselves, I hope they can see that I’m a girl meets world. Always.” Tonya had made a compelling point about fearlessly pursuing a higher education. Education and knowledge are ours to keep, including our degrees. Like she said, those are things no one can take away from you. The only idea holding us back from our success is ourselves. Our own self-doubts. Our own self-pity. It all starts and ends within us. We are each capable of achieving our dreams no matter how long it may take or how challenging it may seem. There is no right or wrong method. Priorities or setbacks may deviate students from their path, but age should not. Tonya Hall has come an incredibly long way. Her exquisitely volatile career path has inspired me. It has also cultivated an impactful approach to the ideologies of higher education and the pursuit. The path is never linear. Each person’s clock ticks at a different beat; but in the end, we are all working in the same trajectory to cross the same finish line. “Use community college as a learning block to see how you’re able to make this journey. Use the tools you gain and learn how to maneuver at other universities or wherever it takes you,” Tonya said.

questions if there is something you do not understand. People appreciate the question and will gladly talk to you. 4. Pursue your hobby: The fastest way for people to get together is through activities. Remember to embrace what you love to do. Most schools have numerous clubs and organizations that welcome new members and volunteers. Look out for posters and flyers around campus, and ask your friends about their extracurricular activities. There will be at least one of these issues for you to care about. If you can’t find anything you want to do, it’s still a good idea to stay calm and just try something new!

Grad degrees may not needed to compete Anna Helhoski NerdWallet

M

ore U.S. workers than ever hold a graduate degree. Years of intensifying job requirements and headlines declaring a master’s “the new bachelor’s degree” nudged a record number of students into grad school. And yet more well-paying jobs no longer require a college degree at all. In this tight labor market, do college grads need a master’s degree to compete? Maybe not. “We have all reduced our almost obsession with the master’s degree,” says Johnny C. Taylor Jr., CEO and president of the Society for Human Resource Management. Anecdotal and statistical evidence shows employers were already pulling back degree requirements even before the pandemic: Data from a job market analysis done by the Burning Glass Institute show a reduction in middle-skills and high-skills requirements — jobs that require more education than a high school diploma — from 2017 to 2019. If fewer employers are requiring grad degrees to gain entrance to good jobs, prospective students should assess whether advanced degrees are worth taking on debt. SOME FIELDS STILL REQUIRE ADVANCED DEGREES Advanced degrees are still the key to entering certain professions: Medicine, law and teaching come to mind. In other fields, as long as you can convey you have the skills an employer is looking for, you can get a job without an advanced degree, says Brad Hershbein, senior economist and deputy director of research for the W.E. Upjohn Institute for Employment Research in Kalamazoo, Michigan. ADVANCED DEGREES COULD HEDGE AGAINST A RECESSION Employers are likely reducing

Delcia Lopez/The Monitor via AP Graduates of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley attend their commencement ceremony at the schools parking lot on Friday, May 7, 2021, in Edinburg, Texas. Graduate degrees, once touted as the new bachelor’s degrees, are becoming less crucial to get jobs. Today, more college graduates than ever hold advanced degrees, and graduate programs are the only area of higher education that saw enrollment increases during the worst of the pandemic.

education requirements to fill slots, which can be difficult in a tight labor market like this one, experts say. But that doesn’t mean it will last. “Nobody can quite explain what we’re going through now; I think everyone thinks it’s temporary,” says Gordon Lafer, a professor in the Labor Education & Research Center at the University of Oregon. Holding an advanced degree could provide a safeguard for the future. If the economic tide turns , Taylor says, the degree becomes a differentiator. Advanced degrees tend to correlate with lower unemployment rates compared with bachelor’s or associate degrees. But generally, any degree acts as a buffer against unemployment. During the Great Recession, those with bachelor’s degrees and higher were more likely to keep their jobs, according to 2014 research by the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce . The same goes for job retention during the

early days of the pandemic, according to June 2020 data from The Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. GRADUATE PROGRAMS DON’T ALWAYS PAY OFF What consumers need is data that show program-specific outcomes like graduates’ employment rates and average salaries. These are woefully difficult to find. For example, the College Scorecard, a data tool from the U.S. Department of Education , which provides information on outcomes like graduation rates and postgraduate salaries, doesn’t include graduate-level data by major. The lack of transparency makes it harder for prospective students to make an informed decision. And that could lead some to end up with debt they’re unable to repay. “Not everyone realizes there’s a risk that it’s a bad financial investment,” says Hershbein. Graduate loan debt has reached an all-time high, according to data from the

federal government and think tanks like the Center for American Progress and Brookings. Unlike undergraduate loans, which have stricter limits on the amount of debt students can take on annually, federal Grad PLUS and private graduate loans allow students to borrow up to the cost of attendance, so it’s easier to rack up debt. Your earnings after attaining a grad degree will largely depend on your field and employer. Outcomes in some fields are easier to predict than in others, says Hershbein. “Teachers’ master’s degrees are carefully calibrated; based on union contracts they know what the pay is going to be,” says Hershbein. But outcomes for master’s in areas like public policy or fine arts are more of an unknown, he adds. MASTER’S PROGRAMS ARE NOT ALL EQUAL Where you get your degree also matters. “If you’re getting an online master’s degree from the University of Phoenix it

Tell a friend to tell a friend ... If you’re interested in student media, look us up!

will pay off less than a master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania,” Hershbein says. Taylor says the nature of remote learning during the pandemic erased some of the bias around online programs, but employer preference is still skewed toward degrees from elite colleges. “I think we have to be honest with ourselves: There’s always an elitism that plays itself into the hiring process,” says Taylor. For graduate students, attending a highly selective university might help them make professional connections to more easily get a job. And grad programs are “cash cows” for universities, says Hershbein. Universities count on the prestige of their undergraduate degrees to attract graduate students into expensive programs. Students then rack up exorbitant debt for degrees that might not pay off. An estimated 40% of master’s degree programs do not pay off at all, according to February 2022 data from the Foundation for Research on Equal Opportunity, a nonprofit think tank. The uncertainty means prospective students will need to do some legwork to prevent graduate school from harming their finances more than it helps their employment prospects. That means graduate applicants should: — Start with the graduate program costs on a school’s website. — Search earnings and entrylevel degree requirements for occupations using the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook. — Scour other tools that list program types and outcomes by degree level including the Wall Street Journal and the Georgetown Center on Education and the Workforce. ——— This article was provided to The Associated Press by the personal finance website NerdWallet. ‘Fiery’ Psaki ending tenure as top White House messenger Will Weissert

Associated Press

WASHINGTON—Jen Psaki had been White House press secretary less than two weeks when a reporter asked whether Twitter’s ban of Donald Trump had made President Joe Biden’s life easier. “We don’t spend a lot of time talking about or thinking about President Trump here,” she responded, then added for emphasis: “Former President Trump.” It was an early indication of what was to come with this press secretary. Her briefings were professional and typically congenial, but could turn pointed in a hurry. The sessions were informative but generally lacked the drama to draw big ratings on cable television. Psaki, whose last day on the job is Friday, has answered reporters’ questions nearly every weekday of the almost 500 days that Biden has been in office. That makes her a top White House communicator and perhaps the administration’s most public face after only the president and Vice President Kamala Harris. Her departure could complicate how Biden’s message gets out at a critical time for him, at least in the short term. “Anybody with a brain would want her to stay because she’s so good,” said Martha Joynt Kumar, a political science professor emerita at Towson University and director of the White House Transition Project, a nonpartisan group that tries to help streamline the transfer of power from one administration to the next. Succeeding Psaki is Karine Jean-Pierre, the first Black woman and openly LGBTQ person to be White House press secretary. She takes over as the administration is navigating inflation and Russia’s war with Ukraine, and as the Democratic Party is bracing for a November election losses that could erase its control of Congress. The White House says

Jean-Pierre, who has been Psaki’s chief deputy, will bring strong personal expertise and personality to the briefing room. She knows Biden well and has been a longtime adviser. “I’ve had the honor of working with many White House press secretaries and no one has done the job as well as Jen Psaki,” White House chief of staff Ron Klain, a veteran of the Obama and Clinton administrations, said in a statement. “I will miss her terribly as a colleague and friend, but I know we are in great hands with Karine following her lead.” Psaki has not denied reports she is heading to MSBNC, where on-air personalities are mostly sympathetic to Biden and where Jean-Pierre herself is a former analyst. Such a move will do little to alter perceptions of Psaki on the left or right. Democrats see her as a champion of their causes; conservatives says she is standoffish. Groups cheering Psaki are common across social media, including #Psakibomb, which has more than 22 million views on TikTok. Psaki’s sisters wore sweatshirts with the slogan during family Zoom calls, though it was more about gently poking fun at their sibling than making a political statement But Psaki angered Republicans by likening the party’s supporters who adhere to Trump’s fabrications about the 2020 election to “silent lemmings. “ When she quipped early in her tenure that she did not know who at the White House could answer questions about Space Force, House Republicans said she was belittling a new branch of the armed services that is working to counter Chinese threats. More recently, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, a former Trump press secretary now running for Arkansas governor, said Psaki’s failure to urge people to stop protesting outside the homes of judges represented “mind-boggling

Andrew Harnik/AP File Photo FWhite House press secretary Jen Psaki listens to a question from a reporter during a press briefing in the White House in Washington, April 16, 2021. Psaki, whose last day on the job is Friday, has answered reporters’ questions nearly every weekday of the almost 500 days that Biden has been in office. hypocrisy.” A New York Post columnist called Psaki “the condescending face of the Biden administration.” Colleagues say Psaki is an encouraging and selfless office leader who digs deep into policy, seeking an understanding that goes far beyond talking points. Psaki begins her mornings writing long, sometimes predawn emails to her staff, laying out what news is likely to drive the day. She later holds pre-briefing prep sessions, which are often long enough to be interrupted by other meetings, where White House press staffers assigned to track different issues talk about major themes in their areas. “At the end of the day, she is a policy wonk,” said Jeff Zients, Biden’s former COVID-19 response coordinator. He called her a “once in a generation talent” adept in both policy and communication. “She is intellectually curious, she asks the right questions and doesn’t stop asking questions until she’s satisfied that she’s gotten to the bottom of the issue,” he said. A 43-year-old native of Stamford, Connecticut, Psaki is the mother of children ages 6 and 4. She served as State Department spokesperson as well as deputy press secretary and deputy White House communications director under President Barack Obama. Facing reporters mere hours after Biden was sworn in on Jan. 20, 2021, Psaki stressed the importance of “bringing truth and transparency back to

the briefing room.” Trump went through four press secretaries, including Stephanie Grisham who never held a briefing, and her successor, Kayleigh McEnany, who was fond of lecturing the media and simultaneously served as a campaign adviser. Trump preferred to engage directly with the public, through rallies and tweets before he was banned from that social media platform. He also sometimes held his own briefings and routinely spread falsehoods while openly antagonizing reporters. Kathleen Hall Jamieson, director of the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania, said the job of press secretary has “been done well both on the right and the left” and requires respecting the media while answering questions in ways that provide real information. She said Psaki had a “facticity to her work that is characteristic of good press secretaries and it presupposes confidence. It presupposes access to the president. It presupposes an understanding of what the administration’s position is that proves to be true.” Psaki, who got COVID-19 twice while on the job, showed that striking a balance between transparency and advancing the administration’s message could sometimes mean literally keeping her balance. While aboard Air Force One, she sometimes stood in the aisle taking reporters’ questions right through landing.

“She made it clear that the press has a fundamental role in our democracy and even the most exasperating people in the press corps must be treated with dignity if not always with respect,” Mike McCurry, who was press secretary under President Bill Clinton, said of Psaki via email. “That’s a lasting legacy.” Robert Gibbs, who was Obama’s press secretary and helped coach Psaki before she took on the role, said she had resurrected the White House briefing room as “beneficial for democracy” after “it was dead” under Trump. Gibbs also noted that Biden has largely shunned sit-down media interviews, making his press secretary especially important. “I think she was remarkably effective spokesperson for a White House that is probably more dependent on its spokespeople than the few most previous White Houses,” Gibbs said. Psaki’s office referred questions to other White House staffers who could discuss her tenure. But she recently told Fox News Channel’s “MediaBuzz,” “I’m an Irish lass in my heart.” “Sometimes I get a little fiery in there,” Psaki said. “But on most days, my hope and my objective is to not make it a gotcha moment and to make it a place where we are providing information, getting accurate information to the public through the press, through tough questions, through debate.”
